[RBW] Re: Real width of Schwalbe Big Ben tires and the effect with fenders.

2020-03-24 Thread Jonathan K.
The tires ride nice, but I've been wondering if they are making the bike
feel a little more sluggish than it could be. I switched to them very
shortly after getting the bike, and I didn't really notice much of a
difference compared to the stock Kendas. I've got over 3000 miles on them
now. No flats, which is good, but I've been thinking about trying something
a little more sporty like the G-One series or maybe even the Rene Herse
Antelope Hills.

[RBW] Re: Real width of Schwalbe Big Ben tires and the effect with fenders.

2020-03-21 Thread Jonathan K.
I have an Appaloosa and made that same tire swap on mine. Mine is 700c, not
650b, but I'm not sure that makes a difference in terms of width/clearance.
I installed the widest SKS fenders Riv sells (B65 I think?) over the stock
Kendas. When I swapped to the 700x50 (2.0) Big Bens, I didn't need to mess
with the fenders at all. I have lots of clearance. The Big Bens measured
quite a bit undersize (on the stock Alex rims that came on the Riv-complete
Appaloosa).

2019-07-20 Thread Jonathan K.
The Jones and Billie bars are spoken for. I have 2 Albastaches inbound, so
just looking for some aluminum Boscos now. Anyone want to trade their
Boscos for my Noodles?

In addition to the Noodles in original post, I also have a Nitto B135
Randonneur bar and a Ritchey Classic short reach drop bar (silver/31.8) in
case anyone is interested in either of those. (I understand that neither of
these are worth as much, so would definitely supplement with some cash.)

[RBW] WTT: Handlebars - My Jones/Noodle/Billie for your Bosco/Albastache

2019-07-19 Thread Jonathan K.
I have a few handlebars that I am not planning to use, and I am in search
of some other bars for current and future projects, so am hoping to find
someone who wants to trade.

I have:
 - Jones Loop SG 2.5 (Jones Kraton grips and plugs included) - These are
the loop bars with rise. Very good condition, some light scratching/fading
on the grip and clamp areas.
 - Nitto Noodle 48cm - Good condition, but have some scratches on the
curves from wiggling levers back and forth.
 - Nitto Billie Bar - excellent condition

Pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/6fPZaH5YRQgA9bLR9

I'm looking for:
 - Nitto Bosco 52cm Aluminum
 - Nitto Bosco 58cm Aluminum
 - Nitto Albastache

Most of these bars sell between $92-$100 (the Jones bars alone are less,
but with the grips they sell for $99), so hoping for even trades. My Noodle
is worth a little less, so I'm happy to pay some cash along with that bar.
If you want to trade, please reply off list.

Thanks,
Jonathan in Milwaukee

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2019-06-05 Thread Jonathan K.
Paul, I'm glad you revived this thread. I'm on the preorder list for a
medium orange Hubbuhubbuh. I also ordered the Silver cranks and the
Velocity wheels.

As far as steerer length, why not leave it uncut for now? Just throw some
spacers on there and cut it later on once you have the bar position dialed
in.

MG, thanks for the detailed write up and picture. Most builds I've seen
have some sort of swept back bar. Good to know other bars work well, too. I
was leaning toward the new Wavie bar for mine. I recently put a set on my
Surly Big Dummy and really like them on there, so I think I might try them
on the tandem too.

I'd like to echo Paul in requesting any build ideas, advice, reviews,
pictures, etc. The new batch of frames are supposed to be shipping this
month. Anyone else expecting/planning?

Thanks,
Jonathan

[RBW] Re: new bike week

2019-04-17 Thread Jonathan K.
That Appaloosa looks so good! I saw it a few days ago on Utility Bicycle
Works's Instagram. It looks even better now that it's finished.

I admit, though, I'm biased. I also have an Appaloosa with Bosco bars. I
hope you update after you've used them for a while. When I first put them
on my bike, I almost immediately took them off, they felt so upright and
bizarre. After a while, though, they became my favorite. I've tried almost
every bar that Riv sells on my Appaloosa (Choco, Chocomoose, Albatross,
Billie, Bullmoose), and the Boscos are the ones that are staying. I really
want to hear how you like them on a longer tour. I ride my Appaloosa a lot,
but mainly for commuting. I haven't done any really long rides on it. (The
longest ride on that bike was about 30-40 miles and the Boscos were great.)

How's the fender clearance with those 2.1" tires? I think your pictures
just convinced me to try some Antelope Hills on my Joe.

Re: [RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

Another option would be asymmetric shifting. Brifter for the rear, bar end
for the front. He'd have indexed for the cassette, which is where most of
the shifting happens anyway, and you'd get the trimming and compatibility
of friction up front.

[RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-15 Thread Jonathan K.
I haven't used the pricier cantilevers from Rene Herse or Paul, so I can't
compare to those, but I did install a new set of CX50s on my Sam. They work
great. I had been running a set of Avid V brakes, and switched solely
because I wanted to use different set of levers that worked better with my
Albastache bars. The CX50s were easy to set up and stop every bit as well
as the v brakes they replaced. They have a much better feel at the lever,
though, compared to the v brakes.

It is my understanding that the only difference between the CX50 and CX70
are the color and the included pad holder on the CX70. So, you could
essentially turn the 50 into a 70 by purchasing a pad holder after the
original pads wear out.

[RBW] Re: Biggest tire/fender combo on a Joe Appa?

2019-03-20 Thread Jonathan K.
Doug,

I'm sure someone will chime in with bigger tires than me, but I have a 58cm
Appaloosa with 700x50c Big Bens under SKS fenders. The tires measure 47mm
on Alex DM18 rims. Plenty of clearance under the fenders, and I'm guessing
I could go 55mm. The tightest spot appears to be at the chainstay, but I
definitely have room to go bigger than my Big Bens. I'm thinking about
trying a set of Antelope Hills.

I'm also curious how big people have gone with the Appaloosa. Also, I think
the new Atlantis has the same tire clearance (the geometry chart says
they're the same), so maybe Atlantis owner experiences would be helpful too?

[RBW] Re: pics of a BoscoMoose on a Saluki/AHH/similar head angled bike?

2019-02-02 Thread Jonathan K.
Justin,

Your bike won't look like that Cheviot because those are different bars
than the regular Boscomoose. There was an early run of the bars that were
not built to the correct specs and these were referred to as "bad angle"
Boscos. I know because I started a thread about it here, and then contacted
Riv, and Dave relayed the above the story. At that time, they still had
some of the bad angle bars, and I ordered those because I specifically
wanted that downward angle on the grip area. I love my bad angle Boscomoose
bars on my Appaloosa, but if you order some off the site, you'll be getting
the "regular" ones that have a grip area that runs closer to parallel with
the ground.

Here's the thread I started a while back because I was curious on why some
of the bars looked different than the others:

2019-02-02 Thread Jonathan K.
Justin,

You're bike won't look like that Cheviot because those are different bars
than the regular Boscomoose.

[RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.

2019-01-15 Thread Jonathan K.
3 in the house currently - my Appaloosa and Sam and my wife's Clem L.
1 on order - Hubbuhubbuh

>From the time I came across Rivendell's website 10 or so years ago, I've
admired the bikes and enjoyed reading Grant's writings but really thought
that owning a Riv was a pipe dream. Eventually, though, things fell into
place and I found myself in a position to afford one. So, after years of
struggling with bike fit, and trying lots of different bikes, I decided to
buy my first Rivendell - an Appaloosa. I was so amazed by how well it rode
that I bought a Hillborne a few months later, and then a Clem for my wife,
and last week I preordered a HHH. Strongly considering a Roadini too...

The bikes are amazing, but the other Rivendell offerings have been just as
life-changing for me. I can't imagine my Appaloosa without the luxuriously
comfortable Boscomoose bars. My Sam would be a different bike altogether
without the Albastache bars. Neither would be nearly as capable commuters
without the Nitto Racks, Wald baskets, and the Sackville bags. I seriously
cannot stress enough how much I love my Shopsack, medium Saddlesack, and
Baggabond. I've tried lots of arrangements for carrying stuff bikes, and
these are absolutely the best bags for me and my commute, no contest.

I've always liked riding bikes. I've owned a lot of different types of
bikes from a lot of different companies. I've never enjoyed riding as much
as when I am riding one of my Rivendells. What could be a better compliment
for a bike?

[RBW] Re: 61.5 Homer on a beautiful December Day

2018-12-22 Thread Jonathan K.
Beautiful bike! I'd love to hear your impressions of how the Homer compares
to your Roadini and to the Hillborne you sold a while back. Like Ash, I'm
also thinking about a third Riv (I have a Joe and a Sam). Was leaning
toward the Roadini, but every time I see one of these Homers...

[RBW] Re: Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread Jonathan K.
I recently encountered this exact issue on my Sam Hillborne. I mounted my
Medium Saddlesack, and it pushes pretty hard against the cable (on Shimano
CX 50 cantilevers), even with the support of a Nitto R14 rack. I just
ordered a Nitto Saddlebag Wire Guard from Rivendell yesterday to deal with
the issue.

Very nice bike! I've seen that one on instagram. What is the saddle height
in the picture? I'm trying to decide between a 57 and 61 for me and my 89cm
PBH. I'm thinking your saddle height looks right around the 78cm that I
would need.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Lots of beautiful bikes, plenty of

G.E.: What wheels/tires do you have on the Sam and on the Roadini?

[RBW] Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-19 Thread Jonathan K.
I'm trying to convince myself that I do/don't need a Roadini. I have a Sam
that I bought to be my road bike, but it's been gradually taking on more of
a beast of burden role. Originally quite minimalist, I am now running racks
and bags fore and aft for commuting. So, I'd like to get a bike to fill the
role of lightweight, long distance, weekend rider.

The Roadini has been out for a while now, and there seems to be a fair
amount of them out in the world. So, for anyone who has been riding their
Roadini for a while, how do you like it? I'm interested in thoughts,
impressions, reviews, comparisons to other road bikes, etc. Would you
recommend one over other bikes to someone who wants a simple road bike for
(relatively) fast long distance riding? Pictures are encouraged, of course!

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto Bosco, Noodle, B135, Bullmoose, Moustache, stems, Brooks B17, C15, Sackville Banana Sax

2018-07-11 Thread Jonathan K.
Bullmoose, Moustache, and 25.4 Technomic sold.
Noodle and 26.0 Technomic pending.
Updated list below.

Nitto Bosco, 58cm, aluminum

Excellent condition with one notable scratch on the sleeve, as shown in the
picture
$80

Nitto Randonneur B135, 42cm
Very good condition
$40
https://photos.app.goo.gl/bUoEFuixfvLeSYc67

Nitto Stems. Pictures of all stems together are here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/CJs3oPAEYkTPdUub9
Specifics:

Nitto Tallux, 110mm, 25.4
Excellent condition, take off from my Appaloosa
$50

Nitto Technomic Deluxe, 100mm, 26.0
Excellent condition, used only on a couple rides
$50

Nitto Dirt Drop stem, 100mm ,
26.0
good condition, with some marks on the vertical part from mounting
$40

Brooks B17 standard, black
Like new. This was mounted for one ride, and then removed. Will come in
original packaging with adjustment wrench. I did apply the Proofide that
came with the saddle.
$85

Brooks Cambium C15, natural

Excellent condition
$80

Brooks Team Pro standard, black

Some rust on the rivets, and the front/nose seems to be tweaked/bent some.
I bought this new, and I'm really not sure how it happened. Not a lot of
miles on this. The bend in the nose/rails is hard to show in the picture.
Basically the front of the saddle appears to be twisted counterclockwise
when viewed from the back. Still mounts fine, and feels fine to me when I
ride it. I'm just switching all my saddles to C17's which seem to work
better for me.
$50

[RBW] Re: Notes on a new Sam Hillborne, Albastache handlebars, and on being "fast enough"

2018-06-16 Thread Jonathan K.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I always enjoy reading about people's
different setups and the how/why they went with the bike/bars/whatever that
they did, so that's why I posted mine.

Austin: I saw the pictures of your blue Sam in a thread a while back, and
it was definitely one of the bikes I used for inspiration when I was trying
to get an idea of how my bike would look with the new bars. There aren't a
lot of people using them (at least of the people who post lots of pictures
of their bikes.) I also spent an unhealthy amount of time staring at
Surlyprof's orange Albastached Sam on Flickr, and of course Deacon
Patrick's two Albastached rivs, as well as countless others. Albastache
bars seem to be fairly polarizing. Based on what I've read, people seem to
love them or hate them. Not a lot of in between.

Ron MC: Your bikes are awesome, and certainly a testament to the
usefullness of non-drops for nice bikes as well.

John: I don't have toe overlap on the Sam. On the Appaloosa, I do
occasionally, but not enough to be bothered about. I guess it's because of
the large tires (Schwalbe Big Ben 700x50c) and fenders. As far as deciding,
Sam is more of the recreational ride that I use when I have free time and
want to just take off. Joe is my everyday commuter, and load hauler. They
are both such amazing bikes.

Tim: I look forward to seeing pictures of the new build. Your comment here,
and on my instagram picture about your ego allowing you to give up on drops
really speaks to me. I love going out for long solo rides, but I have been
fighting discomfort on drops on different road bikes for years. Right now,
I only have one bike with drops, and I honestly don't see myself riding it
much now that I have the Sam. I should probably sell it, but it's like
there is some psychological hold on me saying "you need a drop bar bike."
We've been conditioned over the years to believe that "real" or "good"
bikes have drop bars. I'm becoming convinced that while tons of people are
happy and comfortable with drop bars, I am not one of those people. There
was a great quote from Grant in the Sam Hillborne catalog from a few years
ago: "We're not against drops, just the idea that good bikes warrant them
on principle." Like always, Grant was/is right.

[RBW] Notes on a new Sam Hillborne, Albastache handlebars, and on being "fast enough"

2018-06-14 Thread Jonathan K.

I just became a Rivendell owner last fall when I bought a new Appaloosa. I
was so impressed with that bike, and loved riding it so much, that I wanted
to replicate that super comfortable, smooth ride on my long-distance road
bike. I wanted to try a more road-ish Riv, and when the pre-sale for the
new canti-Sams opened up, I couldn't resist. I had intended Sam to be a
straight up replacement for my current drop bar road bike that I really do
like, but that I had struggled to get comfortable on. Sam had other ideas,
though...

I first built it with 44cm Noodles that I had on hand, but even with the
Riv-recommended 8cm stem (that I worried would be too short), I felt way
too stretched out and uncomfortable. The first few rides I took on this
setup were not fun. I thought the bike handled weird - the front end felt
sort of squirrely. To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. After a quick
mock up with some old Nitto moustache bars I had, I decided to order a set
of Albastache bars from Riv.

Sam Hillborne with Albastache bars is the most comfortable, fun bike I have
ever ridden. (Right next to my Appaloosa, of course.) I love the more
upright position, the sweep, the angles, the width, everything. The curves
are great to sit and grind out the miles, but the ends offer a very
comfortable upright position to alternate with as well. I was nervous that
my enthusiasm would be squashed once the rides got longer, but I've done
enough long rides in the last few weeks to be confident that these are the
bars for this bike. I have no desire to go back to drops. These bars
changed the bike, and my whole outlook on bikes in general. I realize that
I don't have to have drop bars to ride long distances, or to be a "serious"
cyclist (whatever that means). This is such a big deal to me, because my
biggest struggle since I started riding has been fit/comfort on longer
rides.

This bike was originally intended to be just another road bike. I feel like
what I have is so much more. At first I was worried, because I was not as
fast on the Sam as my lighter drop bar bike, but who cares? Now, I only
want to ride the Hillborne. When I ride this bike, I find myself not caring
how fast I'm going, or about anything except enjoying the ride. When I'm on
it, I just want to keep going. I can't think of a better compliment for a
bike. This bike (and these bars) have completed my transformation to
unracer.

I realize after re-reading the above that it might sound like I am saying
Sam Hillborne is a slow bike. It is not. The Sam that I built, with heavier
touring style wheels, and upright-ish bars is definitely not as fast as my
more traditional stripped down drop bar road bike, but it's a heck of a lot
more comfortable, useful, and fun. How fast is Sam Hillborne? My answer
after putting a few hundred miles on it: Fast enough.

[RBW] Re: rear racks and long chainstays

2018-04-12 Thread Jonathan K.

I have the medium Big Back Rack on my Appaloosa (58) and it works great for
supporting a medium Saddlesack.
