[RBW] Re: Thoughts on gravel "races" and events

2019-10-13 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
Advice from a fellow Laterne Rouge gravel/endurance rider: prepare yourself
to be riding alone, it's bound to happen unless you've planned ahead with
friends or somehow make friends along the way during the ride. On long
distance events it happens to everyone, actually, even the fast people in
the front and mid-pack. It'll also happen on rando rides and mtb events.
That's because these events are mostly structured as as events where people
can make very-personal achievements. They aren't team events. Even most of
people in "pelotons" are basically riding alone. I mean, if they stop for a
pee break, the group would drop them in a heartbeat.

I'd also like to caution against judging people for wearing lycra and
riding fast. That alone doesn't make someone Type-A, or whatever, and it
doesn't mean they are somehow having less fun. There's plenty of
over-thinking anal retentive slow riders, and gifted people who are having
the time of their lives while shredding with the best of them.

A few weeks ago I finished a +100 mile mtb race a full *10 hours* slower
than the winner. About 2/3rds of the way through the ride I teamed up with
a fellow slow rider, and I'd argue that our ride was way more epic and
memorable than the racey guy's. Plus, I left the ride with a new friend.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I have an Element. I think it's a *great *bike GPS computer, but navigation
off piste is not it's strong point, at all. If you're planning your route
ahead of time (with ridewithGPS), it'll be perfect. But if you're trying to
wayfind in a remote location, you're going to be SOL. There's no topo info,
you can't pan/scan in the device, you can't add new routes without a
companion phone with internet access. In short, improvisation on mtb trails
or off pavement is hard. The Element displays some, but not all mtb/hiking
trails.

When I'm on riding in a remote area, I use the Element in conjunction with
a companion map app on my phone where I can download maps ahead of time,
like google maps, MotionX GPS, or Avenza. These apps will place your
location on your choice of style of map. Having both devices is really
important if you need to improvise.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”

2019-01-14 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I was giving your question some thought and although I've never ridden mtb
fixed, I have ridden about 2,000 miles of trail on my 29+ over the past
couple years. One thing I've noticed with 29+ is that holding momentum is
key. I've found that you've got to accelerate earlier and with more effort
through corners and up and down the rollers in order to hold your speed on
the flats. Although it feel like more work at times, it kinda evens out
because those big wheels carry the momentum well since they aren't hampered
as much by rolling over roots and rocks. The way I ride is that I hammer at
the top of rollers and just kinda steamroll though any trail chatter,
mongolian stlye, in order to get me up the other side. We've got a lot or
rollers and short/intense climbs here where I ride. the same goes with
rockgardens and root bunches, I just point 'n shoot and unweight my bike as
much as possible and try to let let the tires do the work. I'm not sure
you'd be able to do that in quite the same way while riding fixed, is that
right?

So what I trying to say, is that those techniques that I use that seem to
make 29+ work for me, all involve coasting!

[RBW] Re: Stem and Bar for Roadini

2018-12-19 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
The Noodles have a lot more reach and drop compare to something like a
Cowbell. I'd suggest setting up the bar so you can use the drops
comfortably. Because of that long flat section on the tops, I think the
Noodles work good with a smaller lever (like the Tiagra one Riv sells).
Otherwise, with modern levers you kinda loose that "pocket" behind the
lever and instead have more of super long flat area like a TT bullhorn bar.

I had some 46cm Noodles on my tandem, but didn't really like the deep drop
and long ramps. I like the B115 or B135 a little better, but otherwise I'm
a fan of the more modern compact bars.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2018-12-19 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
The C17 is too wide for me, even on upright bikes. I use one for a couple
years on my comutter but it caused some pain on my inner thighs on rides
over 20 miles. I now use the C15 on two of my most-ridden bikes and
rally like it. One slotted and one standard. I agree that the carved
version is more comfortable and I use that one on my rigid mtb, where the
extra spring comes in handy. I'm not sure why Riv doesn't sell the 15.

For me, B17s were always most comfortable right outta the box, and once
they grew more hammocky I'd need to start tilting the nose up and then
eventually that led to other issues. I still use a B17 on my tandem, but I
don't put a whole lot of miles on the bike. I certainly wouldn't use a
nose-up saddle on hillybike bike, you're just asking to get skewered.

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-26 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
My goal for 2018 was to complete the Marji Gesick 50 mile mtb race. That's
a pretty grueling race in the U.P. of Michigan with a ton of climbing over
uber-technical old school trails. The race had DNF rate of 70% in 2017!

I signed up without having ever done any endurance mountain biking, and am
a pretty horrible climber, so just finishing the race was a big enough goal
for me. I only started mountain biking last summer. So to train, I
participated in the local endurance mtb series, and just put a ton of miles
on my mtb...Eventually I started losing weight and getting faster on my
bike. I ended up finishing the race 37th out of 250, and made it under my
goal of 9 hours. I rode my Trek Stache, a rigid 29+ MMB, setup with Jones
bars.

I've never really done anything "hard" like that before, and it was pretty
awesome process to watch my mph go up while by lbs went down. Next year, I
hope to complete the MG100, stay healthy and injury free, and have more
laid back fun on the bike. I've been riding about 3,000 miles the last few
years and that seems about right for me.

What gearing combinations are other people using? 48/18 seems really high to me

Its pretty cool to see your data verifies two similar bikes with the same tires

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
Maybe your friend was trying to shift his gears with a stick when they
crashed, or their fender jammed, or their overloaded Wald basket/nitto rack
failed into their front wheel? ;-)

My point is, any bike rider can wipe out. V-brakes can have the same type
of on/off problems with modulation that you're referring to with disk
brakes, but I don't think disks are inherently more dangerous. There's many
situations or environments where they could be easily be seen as being more
safe. My experience with disk brakes has been super positive; even the
cheapo hydro models are so much nicer that cantis IMO.

[RBW] FS: Jerseys, shorts, knickers - Ibex, Giro, Club Ride, Novara

2018-10-16 Thread Kevin Mulcahy

I've dropped some weight this year and need to clean out some stuff that
doesn't really work for me anymore.

   - Ibex Jersey: $35. Large. Blue. No pockets. Very good condition
   - Ibex bib shorts: $20 obo. Large. Decent condition except for holes on
the inner thigh where my old Sella Anatomica wore the material at an
accelerated rate. Could be great as liner.
   - Ibex Knickers $60. Large. Like new. Worn twice.
   - Novara Knickers: $25. 34 waist. Have a light built-in pad. Good
   condition
   - Giro wool blend jersey: $20. XL. This is a loose-knit jersey that is
very breathable. It's a size too big for me, but I've been wearing it
occasionally on more casual rides. Good condition overall but the pockets
are a little saggy (although that could be because it's too big for me YMMV)
   - Giro Jersey: $20. Large. Not-quite-high-vis green/yellow. Very good
condition. Only worn a couple times.
   - Club Ride Shorts+Liner: $20 Aprox 36" waist, but adjustable down to
   33. I only used the liner a couple times, but the shorts have some light
wear. These have always been too big for me, so I've probably only ridden
in them two or three times. Have been good chill shorts...
   - Performance shorts: $10. Large. OK condition, but have a lot of miles
   left.

[RBW] Re: Kid Clemmin' & The Morally Indignant Motorist

2018-10-01 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
My 4.5 year old son rides on the back of our cargo bike to/from daycare,
about 4 miles each way. Madison is a great place to ride a bike, and we
have a really nice route along some scenic and low-traffic streets. Last
week, a motorist caught up to us about a block after we rolled through an
unoccupied 4 way stop at the end of a little hill. We always roll through
this intersection; everyone does. Well, so this guy pulls up next to us and
and just screams, "YOU'RE SETTING A BAD EXAMPLE FOR YOUR KID!" and then
speeds off.

Yeah, so afterwards me and my son had a pretty good conversation about how
to appropriately display your emotions. As a four year old, that's a lesson
he's heard before, but I think it was nice (in a way) for him to see how
ugly it can be. My son also drew a connection with a book he was reading
about Star Wars and how Yoda teaches about how fear and anger lead to the
dark side. So... I think he got it. :)

That all being said. We're lucking enough to have a nice route, but I
really try to avoid sketchy/ high traffic roads, even ones with bike lanes.
It just kinda kills the vibe. We've also have had many good interactions
with motorists, even back when he was in a trailer. Someone once yelled at
me (which was weird) something like, "Your trailer is really visable, I
love the lights! You're a great dad!" That really made my day!

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

To me it looks like the top tube is too short if it’s designed around swept
back bars, which means you’re going to get handcuffed when riding around
switchback.

How many rims out there that are suited for plus sized tires, tubeless
compatible, and available for rim brake action? Slim pickens, no doubt.
Especially for the silver lovers. Any rim brake options in 29+?

I was hoping for more of a “high performance” all-rounder rigid mtb, like a
rethought MB-1 designed around some more progressive or modern examples of mtb
geometry.

[RBW] Wisconsin iBOB Unmeeting: July 13-15.

2018-02-09 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
***Sorry for the iBOB crosspost!***

Mark you calendars - Join your fellow BOBs and other likeminded folk for
the Wisconsin iBOB Unmeeting happening July 13-15.

Here's a rough itinerary:
Friday: Gather in Madison, geek out for a bit, and then ride about 45 miles
to Governor Dodge State Park (or simply meet at the park).
Saturday: Choose a route that fits your fancy for a day ride from GDSP.
Sunday: Another day ride, or return to Madison via rail trail. Possible
brewery stop along the way.

Basically, we've set up the ride as an S72O from Madison to GDSP and back,
but people are welcome to go directly to GDSP.

Challenging routes from Governor Dodge will likely head west into the
Driftless region; which is generally just ridiculously bucolic, while being
quite hilly and full of great roads (both paved and gravel). The roads
south of the park and the nearby unpaved rail trail provide equally nice
options for flatlanders. We'll provide route suggestions via ridewithgps at
a later date and will have photocopied paper maps available at the camp
site. Otherwise, the ride is unsupported.

Harald has more details on his blog
. Hope some of you
can make it!

[RBW] FS: Bosco Cockpit - $60

2015-03-31 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
55cm Bosco bars in Cromo Dullbrite finish, with Avid SD-7 levers and rubber
grips.

I bought these on Ebay last week and installed them once, but they aren't
going to work for me.
The levers have a couple light scratches, and the bars have some light
crosshatching wear from being upside down in a parts bin. Very hard to
notice the marks from more than 2ft away.

The grips have the ends cut off and fit kinda loosely - they might not work
for you, so I'm basically throwing them in for free.

I can email pics.

$60 picked up, or add $8 for shipping.

Haro mini mill. The Mypressi uses NO2 canisters, and after a little
practice, produces a wonderful shot, easily superior to most coffeeshops.
It produces a shot with such generous creama, maybe you wont need to add
frothed milk :)

Apologies for the OT bump, but I just realized that the jacket is size
Medium. I'm 6, 180lbs and it's just a little roomy for my taste.

Thanks,

Although I'm Riv-less, I do have a number of country bikes. I'd like to add

I bought a second hand nitto quill stem on the iBOB list a while back that
was part of a batch custom ordered at one time from a bike shop owner. So,
it can be done. This one is tigged welded and polished.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wool socks

2013-12-13 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I'm a huge fan of the wool socks made by Chrome. I wear them in the office,
on hikes, and on bikes. I would say that they are easily at or above the
quality to Smart Wool socks. (Which isn't saying much because Smart Wool
makes some crappy, and some excellent, socks.) Chrome also offers a free
pair when you buy 2. Great deal.

Filson also makes very good tall socks, not so cheap though.

[RBW] FS: Railroad Shirt (Size M)

2013-12-09 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I have a hardly worn Railroad shirt in size M that I'd like to sell for $50
shipped.

As you probably already know, these shirts are cut generously, so think
about the size as more like a traditional large 'n loose cut. It's a great
shirt for this time of year, but I noticed that I just never wear it. I've
lost some weight this year and don't think that I'm going to grow into it
anytime soon. Feel free to make an offer if you think my asking price is
too high. I need some holiday cash and priced it according to the other
railroad shirts I've seen being sold on list.

Toot toot,
Kevin
