Re: [RBW] Best Riv Rando Bike

2023-07-25 Thread LBleriot
I guess the answer depends on your vision/intended use of the rando bike.
I’ve set up my Bleriot as a traditional fendered dyno lit 650B rando rig,
but the AHH has front rack eyelets that make use of a front bag easier to
set up. I also use my MIT Atlantis into a sort of heavy brevet monster.

There is definitely some detective work to be done on these bikes,

The Rambouillet looks off, but in a way I think I can guess at
explaining. Ram's were by definition 700c bikes with medium reach brakes
and fit 700x32 tires or thereabouts. This one has very chubby tires and
long reach brakes with pads at the very ends of the slots. That makes me
suspect that is a 650B converted Ram. Rams came in even cm sizes, and
 that
head tube height makes me guess it is maybe a 62cm. It's maybe a 60cm,
 Almost definitely not a 58.

Assuming the orange Rivendell Custom is around the same size, those are
probably 26" wheels. That's my guess

The dark grey cantilever Hilsen is sort of off-menu, because it has
cantilevers. The wheels also look smallish. My guess is that was
 actually
the largest Canti-'Luki (Saluki), which would have been a 62cm. Then,
 when
the owner wanted a repaint, the Saluki decals weren't around, but Hilsen
ones were. The Saluki became the 650B Hilsen around 2010.

 Those are lovely lovely bikes.

[RBW] Re: Repaints

2021-04-13 Thread LBleriot
I found some blistering on my protovelo Romulus and after getting quotes
from Coast and Waterford, I decided to have my local auto body shop respray
the frame. It’s a single color with no panel on the head tube and no
decals. For $75 I got a beautiful respray that matches the original color
on the fork perfectly. It took a day and I avoided the hassle of shipping.
Something to consider. If it was my orange Ram, I might get on the Joe
Bell list and go through the effort.

[RBW] Re: Tubing between Clem H, Atlantis

2020-08-14 Thread LBleriot

I have both. I kinda think they’re two sides of the same coin. I use the
Clem for tooling around town and on local trails with upright bars and
Cazadero tires. I use the Atlantis for longer, chill rides with drop bars
and RH tires. Both are amazingly comfortable and fun. I can’t ride upright
bars for more than hour or so before my wrists aches. I know I’m missing
something technical, but they seem like very similar frames/geometry.

[RBW] Re: Swapping Clem H to Atlantis

2020-04-15 Thread LBleriot
I'm lucky enough to own both a Clem H and an MIT Atlantis. My Clem has
swept back bars and Cazaderos so that I can ride trails. My Atlantis has
drop bars and front rack for long comfy road rides. I'm sure there are
lots of differences in geometry details and other nuances that I don't
understand, but to me the frames are pretty much the same and are
interchangeable. I could swap parts back and forth between the frames, and
probably wouldn't notice a difference.

[RBW] Re: Drop bar on MIT Atlantis?

2020-03-05 Thread LBleriot
I'm not sure this true for every rider/circumstance. I've purchased a
couple of custom bikes over my 40+ years of riding and purchased them with
setback seatposts and shortish stems to accommodate my somewhat long legs
and short arms. As I've grown older and suffered injuries which impact how
I sit on my bikes, my fit has changed. Rather than discard frames and buy
new ones, I've been able to successfully move from a 20mm offset to a zero
offset seapost without discomfort or injury. In fact, just the opposite
occurred. I own and Clem and MIT Atlantis and purchased both using
guidance from Riv and experience to achieve a comfortable fit on both. My
drop bar Atlantis is set up with a zero offset post and a 1 cm shorter
stem. My swept back bar Clem has a 20mm set back post and 1cm longer
stem. My contact points are nearly identical on the two and I ride both in
comfort for hours. I have tried short extension stems (less than 4cm) and
found that they did strange things to steering and my position on the
bike. Just my $.02.

[RBW] Re: Drop bar on MIT Atlantis?

2020-02-26 Thread LBleriot
I set up mine with Nitto B135 drop bars and bar end shifters. First,
you'll need to add about 8 links to any chain and you might need a longer
rear derailleur cable to accommodate the longer chainstays. Second, I used
a zero offset seatpost and a shortish stem to close up the extended reach
created by the long top tube. Other than sliding my Brooks saddle a bit
forward on the rails, that's all it took to replicate the position from my
other bikes. The hardest part was finding a zero offset seatpost in the
correct diameter (Thomson or Origin 8).

[RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-06 Thread LBleriot
I am a convert, sort of. When I first laid eyes on the MIT Atlantis, I
recoiled in horror. I didn't know what to make of the long chainstays and
the ever more sloping top tubes. Now, having purchased a Clem H and MIT
Atlantis I do see benefits, but as everyone is pointing out, there are some
compromises. They are BIG frames which require some travel and storage
modifications, at least in my world. Also, you'll need to buy a
chain-and-a-half, or eight more links in my case, and perhaps longer cables
to accommodate the longer wheelbase. It may be me, but shifting (both
index and friction) seems more finicky. My rear derailleurs rattle around
more which is surprising given that I'm using basic Shimano 8 speed setups
on both bikes. Also, I wouldn't climb any alpine passes on these bikes. I
find that these are small inconveniences given the comfort and stability
both bikes provide on and off pavement.

[RBW] MIT Atlantis and chain length

2019-07-03 Thread LBleriot
So, I bought an MIT Atlantis from a fellow member of the bunch, and am learning
the pros and cons of those eeeaaalllyyy long chainstays. They provide a
nice comfy ride, but caused me some head scratching when it came to fitting a
chain. I set up the Atlantis as traditional rambler/tourer with drop bars, bar
end shifters, triple crankset, an 8 speed cassette and Altus front and rear
derailleurs. After reading that Riv uses KMC 116 link chains, I put one on my
new ride. No go; in the big ring, the derailleur stretches too much. So, back
to the shop I went for another chain to add 6 links to the original chain.
Time to bust out the old school skill of breaking and re-pinning the chain. Am
I the only one to experience this?

I find that in the NE, once the roads are treated it doesn't take much
moisture for the brine to coat the drive train and frame even in "dry"
conditions. If I ride a bike without fenders, I always wipe the frame and
cranks down afterwards.

[RBW] Custom Soma San Marco ?

2018-07-15 Thread LBleriot
You might want ask Riv if the Roadini would fit the bill. I really enjoy the
San Marcos and find that the Roadini has a similar but “less stout” feel. It
may just be the wheels /tires combo, but that’s my perception. The Roadeo is
definitely more “flexible” but different geometry.

[RBW] NYC riders: fenders year-round?

2018-05-21 Thread LBleriot
For me it comes down to whether fenders means I can ride vs. not ride. I’m
lucky enough to have both fendered and non-fendered choices. I put fenders on
my go fast Roadini and now I ride it in snotty weather and wet roads which
means I enjoy it more.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread LBleriot
I'll play. I own a Bleriot, a custom 650B, an orange Ram, a Rom, a Roadeo,
a Roadini, a Heron Road and a Soma San Marcos (the last two being Riv
inspired or designed). As you can tell, the needle is kinda stuck. I live
on Long Island which is mostly flat and paved but punctuated with steep
short hills on the north shore and pot holes galore in Spring. My favorite
is the protovelo Rom. I don't know why. They are all built similarly.
The Rom is silver and with only one decal is the cleanest looking-most
comfortable-while-sprightly, one of the bunch. The Heron is a pure joy
with its "narrow" 28c tires. The Bleriot gets the least love although it's
the most dressed up with Berthoud fenders, rack and top shelf components.
It looks the part, but is a bit sluggish and has been relegated to winter
riding. The Roadini and San Marcos fight it out for rainy day rides as
both are fendered and yet fairly light and snappy. The creamsicle Ram is
just plain fun.

[RBW] Nitto F-16 Handlebar Bag Support

2018-03-26 Thread LBleriot
I’ve used one of those on my Ram with an Ostrich bag. It’s okay but there are
limits. Since the bag sits high and hangs off the bars, it can effect
steering/wheel flop. Also, the platform is small, so you can’t load up the
bag with heavy items or the bag will sag. It’s good to carry light loads on
longer rides on your road bike.

seat stay clamp is plasti-wrapped making for a silent install. Every set of
metal fenders should include this thoughtful part. Well done Handsome.

[RBW] Fendered Roadini

2018-01-11 Thread LBleriot
I promised myself that I would keep the Roadini svelte and unburdened, but
the crap weather in the Northeast pushed me to fender it up. I mounted
28mm tires and graphite Mud Butler fenders that match the grilver frame.
May never take them off.

[RBW] Re: Heron ephemera

2018-01-02 Thread LBleriot
Thanks for posting this. I love my Heron Road that I purchased from an
iBob member last year. There's something about it, the narrower tires or
the wheels or the tubing, that makes this bike feel a bit snappier than any
of my Rivs. Plus, the Bailey Falls Blue is an awesome color, and the DT
decal is a cool tri-color resurrected today on the Roadini.

I own a Bleriot too and going from it to the Heron is like going from Land
Rover to Jag; both good in different ways.

Re: [RBW] Re: Real ride comparison: Joe Appaloosa vs Sam Hillborne vs Roadini?

2017-12-27 Thread LBleriot
Patrick, my Roadeo is built up with Campy 10 Speed brifters and lightweight
pacenti wheels and supple tires. My Roadini is built up with 8 Speed DT
shifters, box rims and 32 pasela tires. So, the comparison is influenced more
by components than frame design. I liken the Roadini to the San Marcos, Ram and
Rom.

[RBW] Re: Real ride comparison: Joe Appaloosa vs Sam Hillborne vs Roadini?

2017-12-27 Thread LBleriot
I haven’t raced in over twenty years, but when I did it was not with DT
shifters, 32 Paselas, and 36 spoke box rims. So, in my mind the Roadini is not
a “stripped down racer.” I can put fenders, lights and a rack on it, but that
doesn’t make it a randonnuese or touring bike either. YMMV.

2017-12-24 Thread LBleriot
I agree with Mark. I would not describe the Roadini as a “stripped down race
bike’” at least not in the modern racer sense. To me, the Roadini is a basic,
not too light/ not too heavy road bike. I think of it as a partially lugged
San Marcos; maybe a little more sprite. I’ve been riding the snot out of it on
the road, paths, and smooth single track. It’s my fender less winter road
bike. I use it when I don’t want risk messing up the paint and parts on my
Roadeo. Sorry I can’t compare it the other bikes mentioned by the OP.

In order to shift my chain to the largest cog of a 10 Speed cassette using a
Silver shifter, I need to move the lever almost parallel to the down tube.
Enlarging the barrel, like the VO version of the DiaCompe shifter, requires
less travel of the lever. I happen to like the look of the Silver shifter
better than the VO version and if it was made with a larger barrel, I’d buy it
and use it. Does that make a lick of sense to you now?

My grilver was delivered a few days ago and to my surprise came with a

and BB were included, but the tape gun was a nice extra. Anyways, after
collecting all of the various and sundry parts I built it up over the
holiday weekend and took it for the maiden voyage. I built it with 8 speed
bits and leftover wheels. I'm not a big fan of the 31.8 DT which required
a jury rigged clamp, and the Panaracer tires will not last long. The ride
was as expected; a fun do all, go anywhere but large rock gardens bike. A
nice, long wheel base and extra tall HT. Just the way I like it. Thanks
Grant for calling me to switch my size from 57 to 54! The fit is spot on.

[RBW] Need help with Romulus Decals

2017-10-15 Thread LBleriot
I bought the original proto Rom built by Nobilette a couple of years back. Its
seat tube decal was a paper transfer that basically disintegrated. When I
contacted Riv for decals, they sent me protovelo decals but no Rom decals. I
hope they find some for you. Please let us know how you make out.

[RBW] Re: 9 vs 10 speed bar end shifters

2017-09-26 Thread LBleriot
Friction shifting more than 9 sprockets is too much of a pain for me. Even
with a 9 speed cassette, I find that friction shifting is a bit finicky. I
use the DiaCompe 11 spd DT shifter on my 9 speed setup and find that the
big barrel of the shifter makes for easier/smoother shifting.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-31 Thread LBleriot
Well, that's better than actually riding on the beach, but a fender and
flap is not going to help much since the sand will blow onto the drive
train. A fender and flap will cut down on spray, but not so much flying
sand. You could try a dry wax lube and regular brushing of the chain and
cassette. I'm more concerned with keeping the rust at bay.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-29 Thread LBleriot
I'm no authority on this, but I like 5-8 mm of clearance between tire and
fender; not so much for sand or mud, but more for sticks and other debris
that might jam the fenders. You could go without fenders, but unless you
brush the sand out of the waxed drive train, the grit will prematurely wear
the chain/cassette.

Are you riding on the beach, or just near it? If you're riding on the
beach no fender is going to keep the grit off.

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-28 Thread LBleriot
Fenders should take care of most of the grit, but the drivetrain is cheap
to replace compared to the frame. Riding and storing your steel frame near
the sea will result in corrosion. And quick. Make sure that you treat the
inside of your frame. Also, rinse and wax the frame and lube all of the
bolts. I usually soap and hose off the cassette after it cruds up.
Regularly pulling and lubing the BB shell is also a good idea.

[RBW] Roadini Gray vs Blue?

2017-08-06 Thread LBleriot
I'm going with the grey because of the tricolor DT decal. Just like the Heron
Road. A great little detail. I've got a silver Rom, a blue Bleriot, a darker
blue 650B custom, a blue/green San Marcos and a French blue Roadeo. So, I
thought I'd gravitate back to the grey. I'm thinking eggplant tape and a black
Brooks. Then off to therapy for buying the same bike in many variations.

I'd go easy on the Proofhide, and would not use it until you've ridden the

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-19 Thread LBleriot
Bill--Actually, I do think I get the point. My friends at Riv decided to
change the shape of the shifter in light of the fact that the original mold has
worn out. They could have simply made a new mold in the shape of the original
which, I believe, is optimized for DT mounting and more than acceptable for
barend mounting. Instead they changed the shape of the mold which, as Grant
points, is no longer optimal for DT mounting, but is optimized for thumbies.
To me this is a disappointment since I use them as DT shifters. So, like it's
predecessor, a beautiful piece of kit that works flawlessly is now lost to
posterity. Meh.

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-19 Thread LBleriot
Meh. I can't get excited about this version since it seems that given the
new shape DT mounting is an afterthought. To my eye, these are thumbies
and would look silly on a Ram, Rom, Homer or Roadeo DT.
