Looking forward to a new poster...I just recently picked up a Clem and a
Sam poster from y'all to go with my original Riv/Goines poster; a new one
will fit in wonderfully. I'm looking forward to the catalog too.

[RBW] Re: Un-unracing again: Wahoo Elemnt Bolt

2018-03-28 Thread Ryan Merrill
Nice setup. Looks like you got something to motivate you, which is always
good.

I've used a bunch of Garmins in the past and now use a Fenix 5 watch to
track stuff and have not had an issue with any of the units, but I'm glad
to see Wahoo competing against Garmin. The only Wahoo product I have
experience with is my Kickr, and I frankly love that thing.

Next up you will get a power meter and then get crazy geeky about numbers
like - FTP, CTL, ATL, TSB, TSS, 6 week TSS average blah, blah,
blah...which will all tell you that you love to ride bikes. lol

Seriously though, if you are into training, being able to quantify it with
good data points is really awesome.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-26 Thread Ryan Merrill
There is a slight selling point to the long chainstays that I'll point out
but it isn't at all Riv'ish but I'm gonna say it anyway.

So, I stuck Sram etap on my cross bike and found out rather quickly that
the battery for the front derailer limits the tire size in the rear, and it
makes a really nice place for mud and grime to ge all over...basically
another place where mud can slow you down or even take out the
batter/derailer and cause some damage. So, on that bike if I were to keep
the etap on it, I would be limited to a 33mm tire, barely, which is fine in
a cross race but blows for gravel riding. It's a problem of short
chainstays (and sram's electronic shifting.) The bike no longer has etap on
it.

Now, on a Riv with their nicely spaced out chainstays, running etap poses
no problems. (not that too many people are going to run etap on a riv, but
I'm just saying)

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-23 Thread Ryan Merrill
I love me some disc brakes, but on an Atlantis I really wouldn't want them.
There are two styles of bikes that I ride where I prefer disc
brakes...Cyclocross race bike and a pure mountain bike. Although, I could
deal with v brakes or cantis on each. Actually, the Cyclocross bike being
canti isn't much of a con and actually makes the race a little more
traditional and fun I think especially when mud cakes up all over
everything and the whole race turns into what it was like for me as a kid
playing on bikesbut I digress. On a modern mountain bike I like to see
discs.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-22 Thread Ryan Merrill
I do think the new Atlantis is going to be a better touring bike than the
previous versions, not that the previous versions were bad. The one I had I
liked, but it was mostly a trail bike for me. It excelled in a lot of areas
even though I wasn't riding it as a touring bike. In a fit of stupidity I
sold it and I do wish I never did.

But, the new one with the new price, new feature/benefits and same awesome
color could entice me to buy one. Stability in a touring rig is a big
benefit, and a long bike is going to help with stability. Stability does
not mean sluggish and I don't see this new Atlantis being sluggish. I can't
wait to hear ride reports on it.

Just an aside - I'm super happy today...I just picked up my Appaloosa
frameset from FedEx and I'm just looking at it and how wonderful the frame
is. I have most of the parts to put it together except for a wheelset. Rivs
are just great bikes.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-22 Thread Ryan Merrill
The one thing Rivs are are versatile machines and I don't think the new
Atlantis can be pigeon holed like that. The original Atlantis was a touring
bike, but how many people turned it into a trail bike? That's the way I
had mine set up and I never once toured on it. Worked pretty well on the
trails.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-22 Thread Ryan Merrill
Thanks for chiming in, Grant. I'm glad to hear that y'all are riding these
bikes on trails much like I will be riding the Appaloosa on; the gravel
roads around me present some good riding but have steep hills with deep
gravel. I do think a longer bike with bigger tires is going to be a huge
improvement over my cyclocross bike.

Watching the evolution of Rivendell bikes has been fun for me and it is
time to try out one of the newer designs. Bike evolution is something I've
witnessed in the MTB world firsthand. In that world, the builders are
feverishly working at making the chainstays as short as they can and the
top tube measurement as long as they can (probably because going downhill
really, really fast through berms and rock gardens is helped by that kind
of geometry). I can tell you from my experience owning several recent Mtbs
and living through the evolution, the geometry changes are making the bikes
hard to get up a steep hill making the rider fight to keep the front wheel
down and tracking correctly while keeping forward momentum. Now, they are
still a lot of fun for bombing down twisty singletrack, popping wheelies,
and generally acting like a kid who has had too much sugar but it's almost
a one trick pony.

The new Atlantis looks good! I'm really looking forward to getting my
Appaloosa built up and riding it.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-21 Thread Ryan Merrill
I have a feeling the stability offered by the long chainstays on the
Appaloosa is going to be pretty nice for the manner in which I'm going to
ride it. The gravel roads I'm going to take it on could use a little bit
more stability. I don't know if the bike will fit on my Kuat rack
though...got to find out about that. I suspect not, so it will be something
I have to remedy.

I could see how carrying around a rather long bike could get to be a burden
in an urban setting. Luckily, I don't live in an urban setting and instead
am in the country. We'll see.

since I have one coming to the house today. I hope I get along with it, as
this will be my first Rivendell with the long chainstays. I never thought
the Rivs I've owned were bad riding bikes and never twitchy...I do hope the
long chainstays don't make them handle like barges.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-20 Thread Ryan Merrill
I own several mountain bikes and it really is my preferred riding
discipline, but I would be hard pressed to spend money on an mtb that is
still using cantis or v-brakes.

Not that I couldn't be down with a nice rivendell mountain mixte, but the
canti posts would not be in the "pro" column when deciding to buy it.

2018-02-24 Thread Ryan Merrill
While I agree that we can do without insulting anybody, calling attention
to an ongoing boycott of a helmet brand (also camelbak brand if you are so

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2018-02-23 Thread Ryan Merrill
I went through a time of using varuiys cateye wired computers, then to a
Garmin 500, a Garmin 1000 explore and now I use a Garmin fenix watch. The
garmins are nice because you don't have to clutter your bike up with a
bunch of sensors and they seem to really work well. I've had no issues out
of them; heck, my wife is using the 500 now. I think I have a few cateyes
in drawers throughout the house.

I like the watch the best because I always have it with me and I can use it
when I race cyclocross without fearing losing the garmin on the course (I
crash a lot). I got my Garmin 1000 explore up for sale (if anybody wants it
just give me a holler).

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-22 Thread Ryan Merrill
Well, I just bought a hundred bucks worth...I know I will use it. I might
do more later after pay day.

This also got me off my butt to purchase the remaining parts I need for my
Appaloosa build. Looks like I'm going to be doing the two speed single
speed thing that the Cheviot on the blug had. It's going to work well for
the gravel roads I ride, especially the 24 tooth lower on the Silver crank.
I went with the chaco moose bar that was in the web specials.

I almost...almost bought that 53cm Frank Jones frame too but I would
seriously be living in the garage for the year, sent there by the wife, if
I did that. It's a great looking frame and would make a killer single speed
fasty bike, but I don't need it and I got too much wrapped up in bikes now.
If I could sell one of the many mountain bikes I got, I might be able to do
it butdude, I got an Appaloosa coming

I remember back in the day Riv doing a similar thing by asking people to
purchase gift cards. I'm happy to help them out.

[RBW] Re: Homer +1 discussion

2018-02-22 Thread Ryan Merrill
I can say that the Wahoo Kickr is the best trainer I've ever owned, and
I've owned a few of them. Easy to remove a bike on and off and no
tensioning of the tire needed. Great product.

But, a second rear wheel is really the least expensive and still user
friendly option. It's the way I did it for years. I had an aftermarket
wheelset for my roadbike and used the OEM wheel as the trainer wheel.
Seemed to work well.

But...a second bike. Who could fault that? N+1!!!

[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-09 Thread Ryan Merrill
For the most part I no longer ride on the road. I live too far away from
work to realistically commute, so unfortunately that activity was shelved
when we moved here. I've had a couple of bad personal experiences riding
with vehicles (yelled at, honked at, intentionally hit, bottle thrown at
me), local cyclists have had a slew of others, and we've had a death of a
cyclist by a man who did not have a license because he was legally
blind and another doctor left for dead after being hit on his tri
bike...thankfully alive but had to quit his practice because of the head
trauma suffered when he was hit. Locally, it has just become too dangerous
and I opted out.

I do all my riding now on trails or gravel roads, which thankfully we have
plenty of.

[RBW] Re: Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-02-09 Thread Ryan Merrill
You could get a vintage race bike, but then you are buying a used bike that
may or may not be in your size, or your preferred color, and have wacky
wheel spacing, or take weird sized seat posts, ect.

My Roadeo never rode like a vintage race bike. It wasn't near as
twitchy...that's really the best way I can describe the difference that
I've felt. It's quite a nice riding bike but I felt like it was unlike
other race bikes I've ridden.

I consider the Roadeo a high end road bike frameset, and if you compare it
price wise against other high end road bike framesets it's price, even the
current price, isn't that far off. What's the price of a new Trek Emonda
SLR frameset go for nowadays?

but still, since I purchased my Roadeo frame, which I did wind up selling
because I don't road ride anymore, the price has gone up six hundred bucks.

[RBW] Bullmoose vs. Choco-moose

2018-02-08 Thread Ryan Merrill
I'm pondering bars for my Appaloosa I ordered and have a choice to make.
I'm thinking about some sort of 'moose bar having already had the Bosco
Bullmoose in the past and liked them. My choice for this bike is coming
down to the regular Bullmoose bar or the Choco-moose bar but can't figure
out if I want a more flattish hand hold like a regular flat mtb bar or one
that puts my wrists like they would be on a choco bar...almost like if they
were on the drops of a drop bar, I guess.

I'll be using this bike primarily on gravel roads and singletrack mountain
bike trails with very little road riding going on, so quick handling,
secure gripping, and easy turning is a plus.

any ideas? Do you think the reach to the bullmoose bars will be a bit too
dramatic compared to the choco bars on the Appaloosa?

Next decisions will be what tires, what shifting mechanism, what crankset,
ect, ect, ect. (the fun part of buying a bike, IMHO.)

thanks,

[RBW] Re: Design your custom

2018-02-07 Thread Ryan Merrill
I'm still on the fence with the long chainstays Rivendell is making just
because I haven't ridden them yet. I have high hopes for my coming
Appaloosa though, so I will reserve mention on the chainstay length.

What I really want in a custom is a canti post mixte frame that can take at
least 2.2 inch tires and haul my butt around on fire roads, gravel trails,
and singletrack mtb trails (the more buff kind, not the dh course at
worlds) I'd actually rather have 29 er wheel size, but that is because all
my current mtb's are 29ers and I get along with that size really well on my
local trails. I'm a rather short dude, rode a 53 Roadeo, Atlantis, and a
48cm Hillborne and they all fit me well so if it turns out 650b is the
better choice I will happily go with that...Grant would have that decision.
I would not want 26" tires though...that size is dead for mtb now and tire
choice is limited. It will only get worse in the future, unfortunately. I
would also like the wheels to be tubeless because that is what I run when
trail riding. I used to have numerous flats on my tubed tires until I went
tubeless; now flats only happen maybe once a year. Plus, lower tire
pressure without worrying about pinch flats. It's a total win.

The reason for the mixte frame is standover height. Sometimes you just got
to plop out of the saddle onto the ground on the trails and it's always
better when there isn't a bar to come in contact with. Plus, I don't, and
have never owned a mixte. I need to remedy that. Canti posts because
v-brakes and cantis are more powerful and easier to deal with large tires
compared to sidepulls.

I would want the fancy lugs, Rivendell downtube decal, and that awesome
headbadge, just because they are really nice looking. color - first choice
would be a really nice looking purple. Second choice would be some sort of
butterscotch.

The silver low double crank Riv has would be a great crank to use on an mtb
focused machine.

Bars? Maybe choco moose bars or just the bullmoose bars. Either one would
be fine.

paul brake levers, brakes (touring cantis or even motolites).
Shifting...man, index shifting would be helpful with the ridiculous rolling
hills we have locally. If I can get it to work with indexed in the back and
friction for the front I would call that a win.

[RBW] Re: Light but strong wheels for a Sam or ???

2018-01-20 Thread Ryan
Hi Bob

I've found that whatever wheel components you pick, having them built up by
a good wheelbuilder makes all the difference, unless you have those skills
yourself.

My wheels were mostly built by a friend who once owned a bike shop and sold
me my X0-1 and have held up admirably. When I ordered my mixte from Riv I
had my wheels built by Rich Lesnick; they were about 900.00 if I recall
correctly

32 front 36 rear, Velocity 650B with White M15 hubs , DT double-butted
spokes.

To my mind, wheels next to the frame , are the foundation of any fine
bicycle, so paying a premium for a skilled wheelbuilder is worth it to me.
I know that likely many on the list can probably build excellent wheels;
Mr. Lindsay comes to mind

Good luck with whatever you go with.

Regards,

Ryan Fleming in Winnipeg

Re: [RBW] Found Upright riding worse than drops riding.

2017-12-11 Thread Ryan Fleming
this is a good thread and Grant,Patrick and Roberta sort of confirm my
guess that for the mixte with the choco-norms I should shift my saddle
back. Looking again at my bike I am not sure I have too much rail to play
with but there is some. I like drops on longer rides and my favourite
bar for, oh, 25 years is the moustache bar for the distances I
generally ride. I think I'm just one of those folks who likes some lean
(app 45 degrees)

Upright or not the bars RBW sells do allow a variety of hand positions and
that helps a lot.

As usual , interesting insights from the folks on the list

[RBW] Re: May be a dumb question but if you've shortened your bars once can you do it again?

2017-11-21 Thread Ryan Fleming
this is maybe one instance where trying it out might have been a great idea

when I ordered my mixte I originally thought moustache or albastache.
Grant said I might like Bosco but I wasn't sold on them - too high and too
wide and then we went with Choco-norm bars flipped down and Mark did have
to tweak things a little (chop bars and 12 or 13cm stem instead of reg 8 or
9 cm stem) and they did offer to swap cockpits for shipping for the 1st 6
months...one of their swaps was an albatross if I wanted.

BTW no complaint about RBW customer service here...not making this about
that

Just want to get that beautiful custom dialed in to my riding style while
I'm still stylin :)

Thank you Joe; that is very kind of you and I appreciate the offer...but
this is probably something I'll want to let my LBS handle...probably is
best if my partner doesn't do it. So potentially a little shop labour and
I'll probably need another set of the cork grips punched and grooved that
Riv put on the bars.

LOL once I retire I'll be able to fiddle to my heart's content. Also, still
the option of shoving the saddle back and it might even be that the
twitchiness will go away with the addition of something like a bar tube
that I normally use on longer rides with the tube, simple tools ,cell,
wallet and mini-pump.

Mark at RBW chopped about 15mm or so off the ends. I still find them kinda

That being said, if you've chopped off your bars once, can you chop off

2017-11-16 Thread Ryan Fleming
sure are...they make me almost want to clean up my record hubs on my
peugeot (which are frankly disgusting right now) but that ain't happening
before spring.

I've always loved the older classic campy hubs up to and including 1990
C-record hubs. They are s smooth and so pleasing to the eye in a way
that a lot of modern hubs are not..a .lot of the modern hubs are kind of
boxy where these older hubs with the hourglass bodies and those curved
skewers...man I could go on and on.

Laing , you have to put those on a bike or at least keep them as a desk
ornament :)

Re: [RBW] Re: "We’ll have “classic” single speed frames again...."

2017-11-16 Thread Ryan Fleming
Ooops missed org post. Those are mighty pretty hubs

*NOS Campagnolo Record Hi-Lo Hubs. They made a couple of runs of these in
the seventies. Fairly rare. The rear is a wide six at present, I have a new
5 speed Campy axle and a variety of Campy axle spacers that I will use,*

I had to have my rear wheel redished and I'm using a Velo-orange
threadless bottom bracket(stronglight BB and 93 cranks threads were
toasted). Point is older record hubs will work just fine for a single-speed
application

those look like Campy hi-lo flange Record hubs. Very pretty. I wonder what
the functional reason is for the hi-lo rear hub.

I use record low flange 36-hole with a 126 OL on my PX-10 (horizontal
dropouts) which is now a single-speed with some original French parts ,
some Japanese , a little of this, a little of that, ratty white paint. .
Sure, I wouldn't mind a QB or SO from Riv ...or this new iteration, but I
think the PX-10 rides and works great as a single-speed.In spite of the 43
or 44 old paint job Enough so that I'm not jonesing for a 4th Riv with all
due respect to RBW.

[RBW] Re: Enjoying autumn colors

2017-11-07 Thread Ryan Fleming
I love your pictures. So evocative! Autumn is my favourite season, but in
Winnipeg , MB the autumn colours maybe last 6-7 weeks. Depending on the
weather, especially the wind our trees can be pretty naked by Halloween. I
do love the colours while they last though in cloudy or clear conditions

Re: [RBW] Re: XO-1 frame for sale

and I would agree that the Rivendells (I have a 97 A/R) are better bikes.
Certainly better cosmetically. I don't think functionally my 97 Riv is
several magnitudes better than the X0-1. The X0-1 is a fine, no frills
bike. I'm glad I bought it and I have no intention yet of flea baying it.
It's a fine commuter and it's fun to ride. Probably snappier than my A/R

BTW, interestingly enough the product page for Tanaka water bottle cages at
RBW shows a well-broken in 1993 X0-1

https://www.rivbike.com/products/tanaka-stainless-water-bottle-cage-sandblast

I wonder whose bike...is it a customer's or employee's?

It is interesting that after 24 years these bikes still pop up here and
there.Rusty or not, they seem to attract attention; even people who don't
know anything about their cult status are intrigued by them.

In Winnipeg, MB I have only seen 1 other 1993 X0-1 besides mine.

And speaking of rust...I suspect there's a fair bit. and yeah, $950 is an

$200 and it might be a good foundation for a great rider

Well, very impressive

And I have been quite worried about the news of the annual wildfire scourge
in northern California; devastation sounds appalling and from what I hear ,
these fires were the worst . I hope California RBW ers stay safe. So
thanks for updating us about that, Bill. Unfortunately , I guess this is a
dry time of year in a state that is quite dry as is evident in some of the
photos I see.

As you may know in Canada , in BC and last year Northern Alberta we have
had some horrific fires. My heart grieves for those folks whose homes and
lives are threatened.

You sure gotta love that packing job. Jenny and the rest of the crew do a
beautiful job in that regard. Those bikes are coddled. No, they're swaddled

BTW the seat lug looks like the one on my (custom) mixte. It looks really
delicate doesn't it? You know, I really like that grey as a single colour
without the cream. And /or it also looks really good with darker blue
accents like the silver quickbeams or the older A/R one of the floows on
this list has...think he posts under WETH

Nice !

Re: [RBW] 10x200 mile challenge nearing the end

2017-10-04 Thread Ryan Fleming
Bill your 10 bikes X 200 mile saga has been very interesting to read and
quite motivational to me...I'm retiring next June. I'm not thinking PBP or
anything like thatI wouldn't rule it out but once I retire I'll have
more time to ride ...my Rivs which do not get ridden enough...won't commute
with them for reasons I've listed many times.

Anyway good on you for riding and writing about it; I don't think it's a
pointless self-challenge at all. Emphatically I APPROVE!

[RBW] Re: Driver: "I don't know bike language"

2017-09-27 Thread Ryan Fleming
Agreed. I find since my accident last September, I've become even more
conscientious about signalling , which of course, I did before but if I
were honest I've had some lapses from time to time.

Plus, if I can give a car a break, I will. BTW I've always extended my arm
right or left and I also point straight ahead if I'm crossing an
intersection and going straight to signal to those making a left turn in
front of me as well.

And I notice in Winnipeg , several cyclists wear dark clothing and have no
lights in low-light or darkness, which is suicidal IMO

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Lead Times ~ Why 8-9 Months?

2017-09-20 Thread Ryan Fleming
My understanding is that Wford is slammed but I also thought it had
something to do with steel tubing supply...remember True Temper has elected
to get out of the steel frame tubing business.I actually do not know what
Roadeos,,HH, Hunqs or Atlantis bikes use for a tubing supplier but I
assumed True Temper. When you ordered a custom you would get a breakdown
(IME this was true for 1996 and 2001. Not so for the mixte, but I trust
Grant knows well what he is doing)

However, on this forum , Grant posted something about having heat-treated
and non-heat treated Silver tubing and that even though heat treating is a
mythical benefit ; subject of a recent BLAHG ,for 2K+ bike frames made in
the USA heat treated tubing is specced. So maybe Wford bikes use a combo
of heat treated and non heat treated Silver tubing

Just an educated guess on my part

What is the screw in the seat stay above the bridge to the left of your

probably one on the other side I guess. How elegant is that?

[RBW] Re: FS Brand New Lugged S84 Seatpost

2017-09-11 Thread Ryan Fleming
Hi Tim...you make a good point about not shoving the saddle back and my
other Rivs are not in the least twitchy but this one with Chocos , to my
mind, is and this is after Mark tweaked it by swapping in a longer stem (12
or 13cm) and cutting off 14mm off the choc. bars. Riv graciously gave me
my choice of what I wanted to do. so I went with that option. One way or
the other, I'm still a few millimeters from Nirvana but I'm also thinking
that the configuration is just not what I'm personally used to. I haven't
ridden an upright bike since I was 13 or 14. Totally fixable , though, I am
sure

BTW not using this forum to criticize Rivendell who could not have been
more accommodating and who built me a gorgeous bike.

[RBW] Re: FS Brand New Lugged S84 Seatpost

2017-09-08 Thread Ryan Fleming
and part of my problem I guess is that I am so used to moustache bars
(which was my original idea) and I still ride drop bars . I was thinking
of the seatpost setback as another way to angle my torso more toward what
I'm accustomed to...and with more towards the 45 or so degrees I'm used
to, I'll have my butt back a little and more weight on the bars. Maybe
totally unscientific but I thought I'd explore that to get rid of the
twitchiness that I notice...as I say that's where living close to RBWHQ
would be a benefit :) aside from the nice folks in California.
