[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-24 Thread Diego J. Garza
Hi Drw-

I use an iBert seat that attaches to the stem. Works better with bars that
reach back such as boscos or albas, moustaches, but I've also used them on
some 46cm Soma HWY1 bars and it was doable.
I currently have the seat set up on an old road bike, 1x7 friction shifter
on a max 34t cassette, 42T chainring up front, 700x35. More than what I
need to ride to the park, library, coffee etc with my kiddo.
My frame in particular is a bit tall for me, but the extra length of the
top tube works out with having the baby seat there and the far reaching
bars. I could always change the seat to my mnt. bike that has a sloped TT
if my current setup ever became uncomfortable.

It's fun putting a bell up front that's reachable for your kiddo. I put one
of the small screw-on bells that Riv sells and my daughter loves it. I also
set up a handlebar bottle mount from VO and one of their bottle mounts that
fits my Klean kanteen. The only other baby thing I've gotten is a helmet.

Good luck and have fun!

While it is true that rear seats can accommodate a child for longer, I
found that initially, it was nice to have him up front with me. He tended
to be more engaged, did not fall asleep as he was in the back. The Ibert
works well, and is not expensive (yes I fixed the pedal!). I switched to
the rear seat when he got too big; his mom used a traditional kid trailer
that I picked up like new for very little money. After he started to
outgrown the back seat, I went to: Big Dummy with rails (really great;
tried a Haul a Day but did not work for me) Burley Piccolo (also really
great, and he gets to pedal), now we're on a vintage 26" tandem with crank
shorteners. At some point early on, of course, he started with a stride a
bike and, at 8, is going to be graduating from 24" to 26" wheels. Time

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Bob K.
Oh, and I should add that I would probably go with a front seat to start
things off with an infant and move to the trailer around two. Again, it all
depends on the type of riding you want to do. She loved the trailer right
when we started using it (around 1?) and would still love it if I hadn't
sold it. Bad move!

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Bob K.
I have tried several scenarios for kid hauling:

1. Thule Ridealong: This is a rear seat that attaches to the seat tube.
Easy to remove, but the ugly attachment/base stays on the seat tube when
the seat is removed unless you want to take the time to remove it, too. The
design gives the seat a bit of suspension. I found this to be awesome in
normal road/town riding, but the suspension was a bit much when on a rail
trail or fire road. If town riding is generally what you'll be doing, and
you want a rear seat, you could certainly do worse than the Ridealong.

2. Cougar Chariot (2): I got the two-seater so I could put some other stuff
in there along with my daughter. She loved this trailer, and quite frankly,
I don't know why I sold it. I do know that I couldn't use it on the C
towpath (double track) because of its wheelbase, so I sold it for a
single-wheeled trailer.

3. Frances Farfarer: After strongly considering the Weehoo, I went with the
Farfarer because it's just over 1/3 of the weight. I also liked that it was
made by a framebuilder in CA. He lives in Santa Cruz, and has documented
the trailer's use with his daughter. It's incredibly lightweight (9-ish
pounds?) and is a really well-designed trailer. Unfortunately, even my
rather tall daughter tends to sink down into the trailer. She doesn't seem
to like it nearly as much as the erstwhile Chariot. We also didn't end up
doing the C tour last year, so I'm considering unloading the Farfarer for
a Weehoo or giving it another try since she's a year older (and bigger).
I'm on the fence about keeping this trailer in general because it is super
versatile, but with its resale value just south of $500, it's pretty tough
to justify keeping it around if I'm not using it regularly.

Overall, the Weehoo seems pretty ideal, and if I knew what I know now,
that's where I would've gone for #3. I do think the fully-covered trailers
are a great option if the roads where you live are wide enough that you're
not concerned about drivers giving you enough space. I also would highly
recommend going with the double. It's not that much wider, and it gives you
a ton of extra space for stuffed animals, snacks, groceries, etc.

I second the Weehoo recommendation. It's recumbent enough the kiddo can
fall asleep, they can pedal when they want to, and it's 1 wheel so super
maneuverable. Takes about as much room as a normal bike in the garage.

my two cents (because that is all I have left having recently gone down
this path). Rear seat fits for a much longer time than a stem mounted
style. I found the Yepp the outstanding choice (having had a couple of both
kids and seats). We used the seat tube mounted model, clamped like a vise,
felt like you could carry twice the stated limit and the mounting point
lowered the center of gravity a bit.

Mandatory in my book is a double kickstand

Surly single chainrings are pretty good and come in many different sizes.

as far as something my wife "invented" she took a piece of elastic tied
around her waist, attached half a dozen toys to it, so with Everly on the
Yepp the toys were right at eye and hand level.

one more tip, try and get the gearing so low that rider will never stand,
when you stand (my wife is a masher) the bike jumps forward almost
inpercievably but when you are riding next to the baby seat you can her
helmet lurching back and forth.

I've been happy with the Yepp seats. We started with a Yepp mini in the
front, and recently went to a Yepp maxi easyfit for a rear rack. I ended up
getting the Yepp specific rack with the Easyfit window. The rack itself is
a monster, but that's exactly what I wanted in a rack that was supporting
my son. The Easyfit window is wonderful and very secure.
I ordered the rear seat and rack from Holland Bike Shop. It was fun to poke
around their webstore too. Lots of options for child seats.
The rack I ordered is a Steco Power Safety carrier.

way if it was significantly better. I was just trying to figure out front
vs rear mounted seats, which is frustrating on its own. I think I'm leaning
rear though.

There was a guy who posted about a multi day trip he took thru joshua tree
with his child on a hunqapillar with one of those seats. i still think
about that and am amazed by it.

I had an idea to turn one of those crust cargo forks into some sort of seat
for when he gets a little older. mostly because i think that weird cargo
fork on a lift-a-tubed step thru would make a truly insane looking bike.

1x system will probably have to be pretty budget for the time being, though
i'd love to get my hands on a WI crankset at some point. I just pulled the
trigger on a 11-42 sunrace cassette. Any chainline issues i should be aware
of?

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-22 Thread Justin, Oakland
You did what I want to do! MTN Mixte as kid carrier and rough stuff bike is
a dream. My personal idea was to build it up with semi-modern parts. A 1x
Shimano 11 speed kit, Paul brakes (V or Canti).

If I weren't going that that way I'd go with a White Industries 1x crank,
Sunrace 11-42 10sp rear, Microsoft thumbie and some sort of modern-ish
clutched shimano rear derailer.

Good luck! I'm very jealous.

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-22 Thread J Imler
Our progression has been:
Trek two-seater trailer (similar to Burley)
Weehoo trailer
Burley Piccolo

I've spent only $210 for all three on Craigslist. I sold the Weehoo for $100 a
couple weeks ago. Buy used.

Enjoy yourselves!

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-22 Thread iamkeith
Congrats. That's really cool you found one. Don't beat it up "too" much.

My 2 cents:

- If by "riv stock" you mean nitto, consider using a different, cheap
seatpost for a while. The kid seat will most likely clamp around the post
and mar it up. Not long after that, you'll likely get a trail-a-bike that
will do the same thing. Get a nice one down the road.

- As I mentioned in a similar thread recently, don't over-think the kid
stuff or splurge on "high end" items. You'll be discarding it before you
know it, and it all adds up in cost quickly. The seats from Kmart, Cosco,
etc. are perfectly adequate.

- Agree, a kickstand is key (but obviously don't try to load the kid in the
seat while relying on it.)

- Another consideration: Burly trailers are pretty nice and my kids
seemed to like it more than the rear seat, and for a longer period of
time. Easier to load and ride. Better in cold weather, hot sun, rain.
Plus, you can carry all sorts of gear and food and toys at the same time.
Or use it for shopping with no kid.

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-22 Thread phil k
I run the sugino cranks with race face 1x chainrings and a wolftooth
roadlink with a road rear derailleur (microshift R10). I've run 1x8
(12-40), 1x9 (11-36), and 1x10 (11-36). All have been on 650b bikes.

i ride a 38t with 11-36 10 speed cassette for my commuter. 11-40 big
cassettes with 40t front are popular, but I just see it as unnecessary
weight. 38t with 11small cog gives me more than enough speed, and 38t with
36 big cog gives me enough to go up hills. If you're carrying a lot even
doing 36t up front with 11-36 cassette would be good. I don't really see a
need to go above 11-40t cassette.

If you go 9 speed wide cassette, use a 10 speed chain. I recommend going 10
speed. Not only are the narrow wide chainrings made for 10-11 speed chains,
but you get more steps in your gearing. this is particularly useful going
up a steep hill. when I was climbing with the 8 speed wide cassette or 9
speed wide cassette, i would shift up, only for the shift to be too big,
and I would lose my cadence and my momentum, making climbing slower than if
I had more steps to keep up the same cadence. no use in having wide
cassettes to tackle hills, if its going to take you longer to get up the
hills.
