Aaron, Thank you! After trying the Regal, someone gave me an old Concor (not light list Lance uses) to try, works even better for me. Saddles are like shoes, what works for me/you does not always translate to others. The new Concor usually goes for $100 to $130, not cheap but not too expensive you cannot try them. That's my experience with B-17s. The only one that has been comfortable is the one on the Sam with bar flats just under an inch higher than saddle; though I ride a lot in the deepish Noodle drops. The only factor that makes me anxious is the chafing of the, you guessed it, nose in the crotchal seams (sorry!), but if I lower the nose I am afraid I'll destroy the hammock like comfort of the rear part of the saddle. I'll put many more miles on it, first, then, if it seems unlikely to be suitable for multi-day riding, I'll try to adjust the tilt. But I have a Flite in store, just in case. The Pro *is* comfortable, for me, with bars 2" below saddle; but again, the tilt was impossible to fine tune just right after 12 or 18 months; either goosed or sliding onto my hands. Maybe I got lucky, but mine looks rather nice in my eye anyway. The plastic back allows for additional flex, thus the added comfort. I've had B-17s and find the Berthoud to be more comfortable. Lance's choice! I ran one of them for a couple of seasons--it's pretty hard and narrow, but the shape worked well for me when I was young and always going hard with the bars several inches below the saddle... i bought my roadeo to replace the rambouillet that i sold. i like the handling much more than the ram's. i bought a frame with the threaded headset. i am able to set up the bike with my bars <1cm below the saddle. my b-17ti is perfect. in addition, i just can't enough about the handling of the roadeo. it just seems to have the right combination of stability and response. don c. +1 a wide saddle with deep sides looks strange on an agressively setup bike with some handlebar drop. I'm amazed that more folks on here haven't tried the Brooks narrow saddles like the Swift.There are alternatives to the B17. I've seen the Berthoud saddles in the flesh (should that read leather) and they look awful compared to the Brooks. The back is plastic, the leather is mottled and the shape loots malformed. They might be a dream to ride, but just on looks a Brooks wins. I wasn't riding in bibs, but I did have padded briefs and a thin pad in my knickers. I think my weight might be an issue too, at 190lbs I was probably compressing the padding. The b.17 is an odd thing for me. It not 100% comfortable when I start a ride, maybe say 85% comfortable, whereas a San Marco Regal feels just superbly amazing 100% spot on comfortable when I first hop on the bike. However, as the ride progresses the Brooks' comfort stays consistent and at times even seems to improve, whereas the San Marco Regal start to be a real PITA after around mile 40 or so. I can ride the b.17 for 200 miles without ever feeling the need to get off the saddle due to it getting too painful. On a Regal that would be unthinkable, but a ride around the block would have me believe the Regal is the best thing ever. Of course different saddles for different people is true no matter what and this is just personal experience, but maybe mileage has something to do with saddle preference and consideration as well. I have had the same experience. I used a b-17 on my Curtlo ( now sold) about 1 inch blow the saddle... only time it felt ok was sitting up climbing, I took it off after a week. When I got my new Hillborne and tried it with the bars level with the saddle... voila... I was instantly comfortable with really no break in period. I guess I'll have to see what to do with the new Coho when I get the rest of the parts and build it. I own a regal that I was using on the Curtlo. Set up with a set of albatross bars and a more upright position, the same B-17 genital torture device became quite pleasant to ride. When you can get it right, nothing is more comfy than a Brooks. I'm tempted to try one of the new Berthoud saddles to see if that works better than the B-17 with about 2 inches of S-t-B drop. usuk2007: were you using cycling bibs or padded shorts with your Regal? Maybe that makes the difference. I find the Regal supremely comfortable, but then again, I wear bibs. Steve, I hope the Regal is working for you. I found that after a few miles my butt knew that it was riding on unyielding plastic and the padding over it didn't help. By contrast the Brooks Swift I'm now using feels wonderful. It really is a matter of personal choice, and I can see the Regal or Swift on a Roadeo. Steve, that's quite interesting. I didn't realize that the Regal was designed to emulate the Team Pro. But now that you mention it, they do feel quite similar. In the end the Regal won, because I liked how you didn't have to pamper it. And the not insignificant weight savings, as you note, is indeed icing on the cake. Synthetic saddles do not work for me, which is too bad. I avoid animal products everywhere else. I do not own even one leather belt or pair of shoes. I have tried nearly every Fizik model and a number of similar competitors to no avail. For distance riding, the new Berthoud works best for me. I think it would be a good match, both in design and purpose, for a Roadeo. This past winter I installed my first leather bar tape, but I did it mainly for the color than the material. If it's not as comfortable as my standard Fizik Microtex, it's gone! I prefer the Regal as well--it's on most of my road bikes. I think it's classic looks equal or in some applications exceed the aesthetic of a stretched leather model. The low maintennance and lighter weight are just icing. It's interesting that you mention liking the Brooks Pro--you may already know that the Regal was designed to emulate the fit and feel of a broken in Pro, in order to win over skeptical racers when the idea of a plastic saddle was fairly new.
