[RBW] Shellackin' Fun.
Done this in the past, combinations of clear and amber shellac get hues in the middle of the two. Makes sense. First coats soak up most, so I used clear first for a few coats, then 2 coats of amber to add a little amber hue. Newbaum's is thicker, which means more coats than Tressostar or that nifty Japanese cloth tape Riv used to sell (which was/is my favorite). So, 5 or 6 total coats got a nice thick coating of shellac without too much plastic sort of feel. I was going for a military green sort of hue, got pretty close. And of course a rainy first ride was fit as it muddled up everything. Just fine with me. [RBW] Re: Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?
This makes sense for non-aero brake levers, which the OP is using. For aero brake levers would a similar approach work? David On Friday, June 7, 2013 8:50:01 PM UTC-5, Jan Heine wrote: Traditionally, bars were wrapped under the brake levers. You mount the brake levers on the bare bars to get the location correct. Then you take the levers off the clamps, and wrap the bars over the clamps. Attach the brake levers again, and done. It's neat and clean, and doesn't have the bunched-up feel that you get when you criss-cross the cork tape around the brake levers. The cloth tape is strong enough that it won't be cut when you tighten the brake levers against it. (It probably wouldn't work with cork tape.) If you plan to shellac, also do this before you attach the brake levers, so you don't get shellac all over the hoods. [RBW] Re: Anyone mounted taillights to Longboards?
I think the Spanninga's fender lights are great. They might not be the brightest, but they have a lens of a sort, triangular prism sort of thing, that disperses the light out to a larger area. I prefer non-blinking lights, as I find them much easier to actually gauge where a cyclist is. I use my blinkie-able lights in non-blinking mode as well. It's a very lightweight little light and has the really nice feature of an auto mode, which uses a Light sensor and a motion sensor to decide when to turn on. I think that's pretty slick for $16. The model I have does not blink. [RBW] Saddlebag Advice? Saddlesack v. Carradice
Howdy! Anyone have experience with Carradice saddlebags and Riv Saddlesacks? The design of the Saddlesacks seem to be very well thought out and intuitive for actual use. I've been using a Carradice Camper Longflap and it's huge. Wonderful load capacity. Too much load capacity for anything I can remotely need right now. Also should have a Carradice Nelson Longflap coming in the mail today, which is just a smaller version of the Camper? Just as wide? Can't justify two very similar bags so one of will probably have to go. Would it be unnecessary for me to spring for a new tan Saddlesack? They look very nice. Re: [RBW] Newbaum's Tape is Great and Better Hunqapillar photos
I second the appeal to Riv to remake those stems, but with a much longer quill. I do think that, if you are going to raise a bar high above the steerer, the extension ought to have a positive angle, and the Ritchey splits the difference between a 7 and an upjutter. And, the Ritchey is simply a nice looking stem. In fact, if anyone has something like that in a 9 cm, I 'd be interested ... Ben's Cycle has/had some Nitto stems in this style. Believe they're NOS from the 80's. Re: [RBW] Re: Recommended Coffee Grinder
For folks that like lighter roast coffees, a blade grinder just simply doesn't provide anywhere near a consistent grind. Will a blade grinder work to make a cup of coffee? Absolutely. Some folks, myself included, will tell you that's better cup of coffee can be made with a consistent grind that a burr grinder provides. Manual, hand-powered grinders also mean you can grind beans anywhere you'd like, which is wonderful for making coffee outside, which a lot of folks seem to be interested in these days when combined with bicycle journeys of any length. [RBW] Re: Favorite Coffee (regular and decaf)
I messed around with the popcorn popper way, until I set it on fire trying to roast too many continuous batches. My current method is an old wok and large wooden spoon constantly keeping the beans moving. With a little practice, you can get pretty good roasts. You might have a suitable old pan already, no extra equipment needed. Even the worst batches made a better cup than a lot of coffee shops in my area. And it's a fun process to watch and experiment with! And for decaf you're more than likely going to get more dialed in roasts that suite your needs than other roasted coffees. Re: [RBW] Re: New 53 Bleriot frameset!
I think with a brand new frame, I'd be itching to ride it. If it were my first crack at building up a bike, I'm sure it would take much longer to build up completely than having a shop build it. Also, all the hiccups that accompany a beginning mechanic would confound the time. I'd surely not want to have to make several adjustments after several test rides to get everything dialed in. I agree with Joe on this one. If you're inclined to learn how to wrench, do it on a bike you don't mind having in the workstand more than you'd be wanting to ride it. [RBW] Re: Single-Chainring Drivetrains
I think it depends on the terrain one is riding. Here in Chicago, I know I will never need more than a single chainring and that using the larger cogs or smallest cog in the rear will be at a minimum. I understand concerns about cross-chaining, but I know that 99% of my riding will be within the middle 4 rear cogs. For me, a 1x8 setup works and it simplifies the drivetrain. David Flatter than flat Chicago On Tuesday, March 25, 2014 3:08:55 PM UTC-5, Montclair BobbyB wrote: Sorry, but I'm just not getting (or buying into) this 1x fad... AND I believe chain line is really important and cross-chaining IS bad, despite what some claim about their ridiculous 1x11 setups. Someone please convince me otherwise. WHAT is so awful about a front derailleur and a triple chain ring??? It provides all the gear range one could ever want, and enables maintaining a straighter chain line (no extreme cross-chaining!!)... The very thought of using the full range of rear cogs on a single front chain ring makes me cringe. Now, perhaps a 1x3 (using only 3 centered cogs in the rear) makes more sense (but then you'd have only a 3 speed). I like my 21 speeds, thank you. I can almost understand if you're a racer, and front mis-shifts have cost you valuable time; then I suppose losing the front shifter may be worth the tradeoff. Otherwise, I ain't gettin it... That said, please feel free to send me your unwanted front derailleurs... Peace, Bobby (feelin grinchy) Birmingham On Monday, February 24, 2014 6:38:55 PM UTC-5, HunqRider wrote: Wondering if anyone is thinking about converting their Rivendell over to a simple 1x drivetrain configuration (single chainring). I did this last year, and it has made riding a whole lot simpler and fun. I will detail my experiences, which hopefully will be useful to others thinking about making the change. My original drivetrain configuration was: Hunqapillar (54 cm frame) 113mm Bottom bracket Sugino XD2 crankset (double) 34 and 48 tooth chainrings 8-speed cassette (12-32 tooth) To make the change over to the 1x drivetrain, I figured I would just take off the outer chainring and replace with 5 washers of similar thickness. There was a problem though; the “nut” part of the chainring bolts were too long, so had to get some shorter ones. My LBS sold ones that were designed for single speed cranks from a company named “Problem Solvers”; these ended up working fine, though I ended up having to use the old longer crankset “bolts” with my new shorter “nuts”. I took off the front derailer, and went out on a few rides. Everything was fine, except that when doing fast shifts over to the small cassette cogs, the chain would sometimes fall off the chainring to the outside. So I installed a Paul Components Chain Keeper. This device mounts onto the seat tube where the front derailler would normally be, and it covers both the inside and outside of the chain. This worked only ‘OK’ for me. I believe that it is designed for 9- or 10-speed chain thicknesses, so my 8-speed chain was a tight fit. I had to play with it a lot to get it in the perfect position, and even then, it would slightly rub on the chain, especially when riding hard “out of the saddle” which would create chainring flex. So I had to find a new solution. My new solution was to cover both sides of the chain independently. For the inside, I used an N-Gear Jump Stop. I haven’t ever had any issues with the chain falling off to the inside, but the Jump Stop gives me piece of mind. For the outside, I installed a bashguard. I don’t think that just any bashguard will do, it needs to be as thin and small as possible. Here’s why: I never changed my bottom bracket, so the chainring is not perfectly centered on the cassette cogs. Ideally, I probably should have installed a slightly longer bottom bracket to get better chainline, but in my setup, when “cross-chained” from the 34t chainring to the small 12t cog, the chain has a bit of an angle, and a big bashguard would rub. So I put on a ‘SuperLight’ Bashguard from BBG bashguards, size 36 (just slightly bigger than the chainring). This bashguard is half the thickness of a chainring. I then used washers inside the bashguard, to get it just a bit further away from the chain. This has worked great; no rubbing, and no drops of the chain under any conditions so far. Can you just leave the front derailler in place, instead of messing round with these chain protectors? Probably, but then you would have still have to be ‘trimming’ the derailler using your left hand to prevent rubbing. In my setup, the left hand does nothing except braking now. One other thing I did was take a few links out of the chain, since it never leaves the 34t chainring (it used to have to be long enough to accommodate the 48t chainring). The

[RBW] Short Cage Rear Derailleur Recommendations.
With the talk of single chainring drivetrains, I'd like some recommendations about a short cage rear derailleur to go on my Redwood. Before folks jump on the why are you limiting yourself to such a small range of gears train of thought, I will say most, if not all, of my riding will be in and around the greater Chicagoland area, which is flat in the most literal sense of the word. A small range of gears is what I need and will use. Drivetrain will consist of: 42t ring up front 12-23 8-speed rear Friction dt shifter. What is still up in the air is what rear derailer to use. Any recommendations for a short cage derailleur? I have a couple long cage types I could use, but it seems unnecessary. Thanks in advance. Redwood build is coming together and should be done soon. Pedal swap deal done. Thanks for all the offers! Still looking for the Tech Deluxe stem (10cm), but on a whim installed a 10cm Dynamic, and it looks like it might be tall enough. I'm in unfamiliar territory where a regular height stem works for my needs. This is my first Riv that actually fits me (had a QB that was 2 sizes too small). My usual go-to for older frames is having to find tall and long stems to make the bike fit for me. No need for that with the Redwood. [RBW] Re: WTB: Bottle Dyno and Headlamp
I'd second what Ian said. Bottle dynamos CAN be fun on certain bikes, but a dynamo hub is going to be more reliable and less to worry about. Paired with an Eyc headlamp from BM available from Peter White for $73 (an older BM Cyo is also a good price) would be a relatively low cost dynamo lighting system I have an Eyc on my commuter and it is an excellent light, but there is flickering at low speeds. On another bike I have a Phillips Saferide which doesn't seem to flicker once the capacitor is charged. For technical stuff, I'm not convinced dynamo lights are the way to go. The beam is road focused and relatively narrow and overhead hazards like tree branches are not well lit. But, for commuting, lights on demand is a fantastic convenience. If only a couple of hours light at a time is needed and mostly for riding technical trails, a rechargeable battery set-up might be the way to go. I also have a rechargeable battery light, a something or other MityCross which is brilliant (literally and metaphorically) until the battery dies. The battery actually has a reserve so the light will work for another half an hour or so with the light on the lowest setting. But, I'm a strong proponent of dynamo lighting and there's nothing to say that a person can't have both. Run the dynamo headlight all the time and just use the battery light to augment visibility for the steep descents or the twisty trails. [RBW] Re: S-A S3X W/freewheel vs Single for Fauxbeam
I setup a bike awhile back with a S3X with a 16t freewheel. In the end I didn't like the setup and didn't ride it very much, eventually taking the wheel apart and selling the hub. Unless you intend on riding fixed gear with it, I'd say that a regular, coastable 3-speed hub would be better. Also, for riding fixed gear, if I remember correctly, there was a little play between forward pedaling and pushing back to slow down. It felt slightly different than regular fixed gear, and I didn't care for it. If it were me, I'd stick with single speed wheelset and play around with what gear inches feel good to you. Options are Sturmey-Archer (sunrace) S3X fixed gear threespeed with a freewheel screwed on, or just a nicer sealed bearing single speed wheelset. I know there are a few S3X riders here so, how does it feel? I mean, is there noticable drag or mushy-ness? In the 3rd (direct) gear, does it feel the same as a good single speed? The three speed is attractive to me, because I sometimes pull a trailer with my daughters with this bike, and sometimes 72 gear inches is a bit high.. Or I could keep it single, but just with a nicer matching wheelset. Or I could build it 1x8, which I already have all the parts for. [RBW] Redwood Bags #3 #4. Color Poll!
I finally got around to finishing my Redwood build. I had initially built it up with parts swapped directly from an 80s touring frame with low-ish trail and bars that were 40cm at brake hoods, and with a small front rack and decaleur for carrying an Acorn tall rando bag. That setup just wasn't what the frame was intended for. It did ride great with a full rando bag and I was a little bummed. So... I stripped a few parts off and the bike sat it a closet for a month. Not a bad idea at all. When I built it back up I put on 44cm Noodles and went for a rack-less setup. It rides beautifully now and I've finally enjoyed Noodles (gave them a few tries in the past and they just didn't fit with the frames I had). Combined with my recent dabbling in bag-making, the Redwood really works great with a small-ish bag up front on the handlebars and a saddle wedge. On to the bags... I found cheaply some scraps of very thick natural cotton duck canvas and some not as thick yellow cotton duck. I waxed the fabrics myself with a homemade mixture, then hand stitched them. I hadn't originally intended them to go on the Redwood, but it worked out nicely. Now.. the color poll. These bags were experiments and I'd change a couple dimensions to specifically fit the Redwood. So, which color looks best? Natural beige or the yellow? Photos here: http://s821.photobucket.com/user/dabanzer/library/bicycles?sort=3page=1 Would appreciate any thoughts or bagmakers tips. [RBW] FS: Bags Shameless Plug.
Hello! Sorry to iBOB listers for the crosspost. I started making basic small bags and have a couple for sale here: treetop.bigcartel.com Short story and Riv content... I tried to set my new Riv Redwood up as a front rack loaded rando style bike. Affected handling too much for my taste. This coincided with finding some small pieces of cotton duck and the great bag experiment started to outfit my Redwood with bags that didn't rely on rack supports. Basically I wanted to split loads between a saddle wedge and a front bag. The experiment continues and basic bag making has become a fun hobby. I'll continue to make bags, some for myself to test, some to sell to raise money for more bag-related tools. Just a note as well. Custom bags probably aren't in my plans in the near future. Input is welcome though! I'm going to design a rackless front bag shortly. Any thoughts on front bags that attach to handlebars/stem-or-headtube? They are smaller than what I would consider a saddlebag. Semantics I suppose. I have made a smaller wedge, which fits less, and larger ones which fit more, which is what Patrick was referring to. As Ron has said, the medium is similar to the Acorn tubular bag that they stopped making. The medium fits more than just a spare tube and tools, which is why I called it medium I suppose. It's best for a bike for day rides where the riding is the emphasis, and you're not needing to carry a rando load or camping equipment. My Redwood fits this category. Add a small handlebar bag (like this guy: http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/rolltop-handlebar-bag-gray-waxed-canvas-ready-to-ship) and I can commute and carry a light rando load. As I'm just starting out at this, I'm still working on new designs, but will continue to make and offer designs that I know work well. Re: [RBW] best fenders for Rambouillet? WTB question
VO's do come with leather washers, though they're not great ones. Leather washers should be installed at a point where the fender itself touches frame (chainstay/seatstay mounts, under fork crown). I think what cuts down on noise the most is that they're properly installed and secured. Having a front rack mount for the front definitely helps secure the front. The perceived noise I believe comes from gravel/very-tiny-rocks that may bounce around. Rock on metal is louder than rock on plastic. Especially so when compared to the cost of leather. There is so much tanned cow skin on the market, I would not be all surprised to learn Brooks cost for leather is substantially less than the infused rubber. Agreed. There was a LONG discussion about the price of this saddle when it came out. I would think with Brooks' tooling and machinery in place, that a leather saddle would be less expensive for them to make than the Cambium. Matthew - I have the Cambium set up close to level with drop bars and positioned the actual saddle level. Any tips for a different angle? I still have the saddle and wouldn't mind messing with angles before I return it. All in all, it's narrower than I prefer. Doesn't really matter if it's vulcanized rubber or leather or the saddle is just too narrow for my tastes. I know there's investment in tooling and such, but I hope they launch new sizes. [RBW] Re: Cambium Test. Stainless Steel Spoke Corrosion? 7-speed Hubs?
That was kind of my point. For leather saddles, Brooks already has tooling and machinery in place. For the new Cambium's, they're paying a subcontractor to make a new saddle model, needing new tooling and machinery. No matter who is making it, new products require initial investment to produce, making the Cambium's potentially more expensive to make (and subsequently cost to Brooks) than Brooks' leather models. My understanding was that they were OEMed by Selle Italia for Brooks. How does Brooks' tooling and machinery have any bearing on the price of a saddle manufactured by a subcontractor? Maybe I'm missing some key bit of information. I stopped paying attention to the Cambium developments once I failed to make it into the beta test. Re: [RBW] Re: New build: Soma GR, and a question
As per the cable stops: The Riv has the barrel adjusters below the mounting bolt, The GR has them above. Yes?
