[RecipesAndMore] Lora's Summer Squash Casserole
Lora's Summer Squash Casserole (Lora Leggett 2012.07.16) 1 tablespoon butter 3 small yellow squash or whatever you have 1 medium onion, I used half of a Spanish onion 1 medium green bell pepper, I used half of a very large one 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon sweet basil 1 ((10 3/4) can cream of celery soup, undiluted 1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. If desired, peel the squash and cut off the very tips of each end. On a cutting board, slice the squash and chop the onion into bite size pieces or slice it if you like. Rub the butter on the bottom and sides of an 8 inch square glass casserole or desired baking dish. Place the squash and onion on the bottom of the pan in one layer if possible. You can put the rest on top. Sprinkle the garlic powder and sweet basil over the vegetables and gently mix them around in the casserole so the herbs will be equally distributed. I did not measure these herbs and ran out my basil bottle. A teaspoon may not be enough for your taste. Pour the cream of celery soup over the vegetables and gently mix again to get it to spread evenly. It is important because you are not adding water or milk to dilute your sauce. Pour the Mozzarella cheese on top and spread evenly. Place the casserole on a cookie sheet and use oven mitts when putting it into or taking it out of the oven to avoid quick temperature changes to your casserole or burning yourself. .Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Remove casserole on cookie sheet from oven and allow to cool at least 15 or 20 minutes before serving. -- Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore
[RecipesAndMore] George And Lora's Strawberry Banana Dessert
George And Lora's Strawberry Banana Dessert (Lora Leggett 2012.06.28) 1 serving pack Little Debbie Banana Twins, each cake cut into 3 pieces 8 to 10 strawberries, halved or sliced depending on size or preference 5 or so tablespoons of your favorite ice cream or Cool Whip, I used Haagen Dasce Dark Chocolate Mint Cut up the Little Debbie cakes and arrange them in the bottom of a bowl. Cover with sliced or halved strawberries. Cover that with ice cream or Cool Whip as desired. Allow to sit a few minutes for the flavor of the strawberries and ice cream to absorb into the Little Debbies. You can mix and match all the ingredients. I used what was around. I am sure Swiss Cake Rolls or other kinds of Little Debbies would work. George's vanilla ice cream was out and I just had a small ice cream container of my son's to use. It is expensive so I just used a few tablespoons to cover the strawberries. This is dedicated to the memory of George and is the first meal I have created since he passed away on June 16, 2012. -- Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore
[RecipesAndMore] Update On George
Hi All, Starting around late Sunday and early Monday George was talking less and I had a hard time understanding what he was asking for and it became very frustrating. A nice girl named Jantelle came on Monday afternoon and helped me to give him a sponge bath and change his sheets. I was so appreciative of that because it has been a long 15 months and I wished so much to have this kind of help when Georgie was away for work. Well, I took a nice shower, took care of my feet, washed clothes and cooked dinner because she had helped me so much and made it so easy. But that night he continued to get nausea and some came up on him. I had to clean under his right shoulder and then I put a pillow case to protect him and his bottom sheet. I called Hospice and they sent Denise and she gave him a strong medication for nausea in a suppository. She said to give him that every 12 hours. I said I could do that myself. But Dr. Phillips told me on Tuesday morning that if he no longer had nausea to hold off on that. Then on Tuesday morning Washauna came. The night before, Denise told me that she did not think he had much time left. She said she could tel by the way his heart sounded and the way he looked. Washauna listened to his heart and lungs and even his bowels. He said his bowels were silent. She gave him liqued morphine in his mouth. She said for us to give him half of an eye dropper every four hours. But even before the morphine he was not responsive to her talking to him, calling him, and also tapping his chest. She called it pain but I think she means it was suppose to stimulate him abruptly. He showed no notice. We brought Olga, his mother, to see him in the late afternoon. I took her into the kitchen and told her there is not much time left and he is going home to The Lord. George Elvis has been giving him the morphine through the night. I hope Dr. Phillips can come. A chaplain named Jerry is coming to talk and pray with me at ten this morning. I also met the social worker, Danette, yesterday. It is rough but I am so thankful for everyone's prayers and support. -- Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore

His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.' I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him... He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, 'Those guys are jerks.' They really should get lives. ' He looked at me and said, 'Hey thanks!' There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

[RecipesAndMore] George Is Home From The Hospital
George came home from the hospital about 6PM August 10 by ambulance. He has a feeding tube and catheter. He is also still having breathing treatments to clear his lungs. He is restricted to no liquids by mouth because of the lung infection and they are afraid he will aspirate, which is getting water or other liquids into the lungs. He has several kinds of medication for pain, for nutritonal supplements, for breathing and other things. They now have to be crushed and inserted into the feeding tube by a syringe. So I am getting sighted help to do this part. Our son and I have devised a schedule four times a day, mostly at the 6 and 12 o'clock hours of the day. He gets pills and blood sugar testing. He also is repositioned in bed and cleaned up if necessary. I give him a few small ice chips and sometimes mouth wash on a little sponge or swab for the mouth. i dip the little sponge into cinnamon mouth wash. The food for the feeding tube is a liquid that comes in 8 ounce cans. His machine is set at 70 CC's (cubic centimeters) and each can has 230 of them. So one little can goes slightly more than three hours. We brought ten of them home with him and the company shipped 216 more that arrived from South Bend, Indiana on Thursday. We were not able to get the same home health care agency as before because they said they had too large a case load. We were very disappointed because we really like and more importantly respect Melody Ford and she looked forward to coming back. Well, we were assigned another agency and after only two days we have decided we do not want to continue with them. We are on a waiting list for when our other agency has an opening and besides we will do just fine and really we do have the right to refuse the home health care. It is hard to explain but the three ladies we met were very nice people. But they did not seem like they would be that much help and they had difficulty understanding us, our disabilities, and our abilities for that matter. Even George in his state of ill health said That's all. Wrap it up. I think it is best because we are under enough stress as things are. My brother Dan is coming today to help with some of George's care because my son already had special plans for much of this day. There is an engagement party for one of his friends. I know it is a lot of work but it is wonderful to have George home again. He will probably be on this feeding for a few weeks and then the doctors will decide what treatment options there are for the pancreas. Dr. Phillips is coming on the 18th to see us. I am still taking three prescriptions for diabetes, antibiotic and pain. I do not think my foot has made as much progress as it should. I will ask the doctor next Thursday. It is good to be home and George and I wish to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. [RecipesAndMore] George And Lora's Oven Barbecued Ribs Detailed
George And Lora's Oven Barbecued Ribs Detailed (George and Lora Leggett 2011.05.30) 1 or 2 strips spareribs or 1 pound country ribs or short ribs 2 cups water or enough to cover ribs 1 cup Open Pit or your favorite barbecue sauce salt and pepper to taste Open ribs and rinse under water. If your strip is too large to fit on the bottom of a broiler pan, cookie sheet,or casserole you may have to cut the strip in half to make it fit. The spareribs or other ribs usually have bones in them. The country ribs or short ribs are usually separated and have very little or no bone in them. But there is more meat and they cook the same way. The separated and almost boneless ones may be easier for you to manage the first time. Place the ribs on the bottom of a broiler pan, deep cookie sheet or casserole. Pour 2 cups water over the ribs,or enough to completely cover them. Very carefully place the pan in oven. If keeping it level is too heavy or too difficult, place the pan with only the ribs on the oven rack without it preheated and just pour in the water over them. Then shut the oven and heat to 350 degrees. You can start it with a cold oven because it is going to cook in the water for some time anyway. So preheating or cold oven is up to you. I am used to preheating for everything. These things have come up in discussion with George about cooking for people with cerebral palsy or other disabilities. Cook the ribs at 350 degrees for at least an hour and a half to 2 hours. It depends on how full your pan is, if you have one or two strips and the consistency or thickness of the meat. Ribs come in a variety of shapes and styles. You will know because it will start smelling good and as the water evaporates you will hear more sizzle. When you think it is time, take the pan out of the oven with oven mitts. Drain off any excess water. If you fear dropping them in the sink place the ribs on another pan while you take the original pan and dump it. You do not really need to rinse the pan out. Return the ribs to the pan if you have moved them. Pour 1 cup of Open Pit or other barbecue sauce over the ribs. Move them around to coat evenly. Season with salt and pepper to taste or you can do that when you eat them. Return to oven and cook at 350 for about a half hour. You can then just cut power on the oven. The ribs will continue to cook and absorb the sauce but will not get tough and burn that way. You can continue to make other courses and enjoy the company. It is easier when the pan is cooled to remove and cut the ribs. Yes, you can get your hands a little messy doing that, just be near the sink and hope no one who criticizes is around! Hi Becky, Probably many people who have never started a camp fire and they have so much trouble doing it, and yet all those public service commercials with Smoky Bear say that one carelessly thrown or dropped match can start a whole forest fire, yet the city person going camping for the first time has to struggle so hard to start a fire or a barbecue. Re: [RecipesAndMore] My Walk With Sam
I enjoyed that poem. We lost our dog, Sam, last July and while Sam was here, we also had a dog named Abby for a little while. But she didn't work out and Sam was glad to see her gone! The paths there are cool and shady, Not much walking in the sun. We started out side by side and, Walking along real good. I wondered how long it would last, Keeping up like he should. You see Sam has become a lazy bonz, Doesn't like to walk too long. He'd much rather sit on a bench, And see what comes along. Half a mile down that shady path, All of a sudden we stopped. No budging or coaxing that boy, On his tummy he flopped! The people walking and jogging by, Looked and gave a smile. I really didn't think it funny, I wanted to walk awhile. When I turned and started back, He willingly came along. We were headed toward the playground, Where he wanted all along! You wouldn't believe the attention he stirred; Showed off by chasing his tail! He pranced around and made them laugh, Until he met a dog named Abigale! The children forgotten as she snuggled up; This lady stole his heart. Oh my goodness, how he did strut! Then it was time to part. He fell asleep when we got home, I'm sure dreaming of the day. And Doggy dreams of Abigale, Together the two in play! I sure do love my sweet Sam, Doesn't matter lazy or not. Re: [RecipesAndMore] Pasties
Well, I looked again and I have four other recipes for pasties that were in George's recipe library. The one called U.P. Pasties does have the rutabaga or turnips. One of the other ones has ground pork and the others call for ground lean beef. There is even one with venison. I definitely am thinking about trying to make them. Place half of the potato slices in a line down the center of each circle, leaving at least 1 inch at each end uncovered. Arrange onion slices over the potatoes, and season with salt, pepper and some of the dried parsley. Place half of the beef cubes over each onion layer, then season again with salt, pepper and dried parsley. Fold the edges over the pastry over the filling, and tuck in the ends. Transfer the two pastries to a greased baking sheet, and cut a few slits in the top of each one for ventilation. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven. Re: [RecipesAndMore] Pasties
I am not sure where they came from, but I know they are really popular in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. it almost seems like a different country there than down here in the lower part here near Detroit. i guess because we are near a major city and the U.P. people, called Yupers I guess, are kind of small town people. Yes, they are meat pies and they are puffy and the dough is really tasty. It kind of tastes like a stew filling but not a lot of juice, so you can actually hold them and eat them like a pizza pocket of something like that but they are quite a bit larger than the pizza pockets are. When I hear them talk about them on Ask Your Neighbor they say a pasty is enough for two people to eat one. They are also very fanatical about the pronunciation of them. My mother always said paysty but it is pasty, like the word past with a Y at the end. Lora - Original Message - From: Sandy! Re: [RecipesAndMore] Law Of The Garbage Truck
That is so true. Thanks, Steve. Lora - Original Message - From: steve doyle To: recipesandmore@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 8:00 AM Subject: [RecipesAndMore] Law Of The Garbage Truck Law Of The Garbage Truck One day I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy; and I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital! This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, The Law of the Garbage Truck. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love the people who treat you right, and pray for the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it. [RecipesAndMore] George And Lora's Oyster Casserole
George And Lora's Oyster Casserole (George and Lora Leggett 2010.01.06) 1 (8 oz.) can oysters with its juice, such as Bumble Bee Fancy Whole Oysters, not smoked oysters 1 can cream of celery soup half of a soup can milk 1/2 cup wide egg noodles, uncooked 1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese, or to taste Open oysters and take several to taste and make sure they are safe for human consumption. (Smile) Pour remaining oysters and the can liquid into an 8 inch square casserole. Add cream of celery soup and about a half of the soup can of milk. Add uncooked wide noodles. Use a small amount, a large handful or about a quarter cup. If you have too many noodles you will not have enough liquid for the noodles to cook. Mix with a spoon to distribute evenly in the casserole. Make sure that the noodles are covered with the liquid. Cover casserole with the shredded Mozzarella cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes and then let stand 10 minutes or more. You can tell when it is done and set by feeling the cheese melted over the casserole and that it is not liquidy on top. -- Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore

Yes, that is a good one. I am not sure if I have it from before but I will save this one. I belong to some of both kinds of groups. The leftovers beckoned -- the dark meat and white but I fought the temptation with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation, the thought of a snack became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. [RecipesAndMore] White Castle Stuffing
White Castle Stuffing (Lora Leggett) If you do not have White Castle hamburgers in your area you may be able to find them frozen at the grocery store. Buy about one White Castle burger per pound of the turkey's weight. Crumble up the burgers, buns, pickles and all, into a bowl. You may wish to add one egg and a little chopped celery. Stuff it all into the turkey. Add a little bread if there is still area to fill up in the turkey. Bake the turkey as usual and enjoy! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

[RecipesAndMore] George And Lora's Sweetest Day Pork Peppers And Pineapple
George And Lora's Sweetest Day Pork Peppers And Pineapple (George And Lora Leggett 2009.10.17) 2 pork chops, bone removed and cut into small strips 1 medium or large green pepper, stem and seeds removed and cut into strips 1 small onion, chopped 1 small can of pineapple chunks, reserve some juice from the can soy sauce honey ginger minced garlic corn starch water salt and pepper to taste butter olive oil Pour a small amount of olive oil into a frying pan. Add a couple pieces of butter. Warm it on medium heat until it starts to sizzle. Add the pork and cook stirring occasionally to separate meat and cook evenly on all sides. After about 8 minutes or so when the meat feels like it is getting done, add the pepper and chopped onion and mix it around to cook. Add the pineapple chunks. Meanwhile, in a measuring cup, combine some soy sauce, honey, reserved pineapple juice, powdered ginger, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and water. You may use fresh ginger and garlic or the powdered kind. I used minced garlic in a spice bottle, and powdered ginger. Add a little corn starch and mix it around to combine. Bring the pan to high and pour in the liquid. Mix it around as the pan comes near to a boil. Reduce heat and cover it and let it bubble on medium covered for about 10 minutes or more stirring occasionally. It should thicken as it cooks on the stove. Let it simmer a little while on very low. Cut the heat and let it wait until it cools donw a bit. Pour it into a large bowl. I did not use exact measurements for the sauce ingredients, just guessed along the way. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---
[RecipesAndMore] Re: Exploding Pyrex Dishes
That was very interesting. I have never had any problems with the casseroles and pie plates I have now but in 1995 I had a couple staying with us and when she cooked with it in the oven and then took it out and sat it on the stove it shattered. But she did not have it sitting on a cookie sheet as I always do. Also, it was old, we had gotten it as a wedding present so I know it was a real Corning casserole. But I put these in the oven and microwave all the time. Of course my big casserole is too big for my microwave. Hi Robert, It is kind of hard for me to go to web sites and follow links and stuff. I would prefer if people just post recipes to the group or other groups we are in and then if I get them directly in email it is easier to read and to put into my folder. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Some Things You Keep
Thank you, Steve. I agree with that one. Lora - Original Message - From: steve doyle To: RecipesAndMore@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 12:01 PM Subject: [RecipesAndMore] Some Things You Keep Some Things You Keep Some things you keep. Like good teeth. Warm coats. Bald husbands. They're good for you, reliable and practical and so sublime that to throw them away would make the garbage man a thief. So you hang on, because something old is sometimes better than something new, and what you know often better than a stranger. These are my thoughts, they make me sound old, old and tame and dull at a time when everybody else is risky and racy and flashing all that's new and improved in their lives. New spouses, new careers, new thighs, new lips. The world is dizzy with trade-ins. I could keep track, but I don't think I want to. I grew up in the fifties with practical parents - a mother, God bless her who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then re-used it- and still does. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. They weren't poor, my parents, they were just satisfied. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Fifties couples in Bermuda shorts and Banlon sweaters, lawnmower in one hand, tools in the other. The tools were for fixing things - a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things you keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, re-heating, re-newing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant there'd always be more. But then my father died, and on that clear autumn night, in the chill of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any 'more'. Sometimes what you care about most gets all used up and goes away, never to return. So, while you have it, it's best to love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. That's true for marriage and old cars and children with bad report cards and dogs with bad hips. You keep them because they're worth it, because you're worth it. Some things you keep. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---
[RecipesAndMore] Re: Happy Endings
That is wonderful. I remember a similar thing happened to Mike Utley, one of our Detroit Lions. I am not sure if he ever has been able to walk, but he started the Utley Foundation to help people with that kind of injury. Thanks, Steve. Lora - Original Message - From: steve doyle To: RecipesAndMore@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, September 27, 2009 10:43 AM Subject: [RecipesAndMore] Happy Endings Happy Endings You could hear a pin drop. Then, some sniffles in the mob of thousands. Eventually, after what appeared like an eternity, the crowd roared with applause as the ambulance took him away. His name is Kevin Everett, and he was playing for the Buffalo Bills football team. He was hurt, hurt very badly trying to make a tackle on a kickoff. The blow injured his spinal column, causing a paralysis. He could not give the thumbs up to the crowd, no matter how hard he tried. Meanwhile, back home in a small town near Houston, Kevin's mother was watching the game in a sport's bar. Very few things in life are worse than watching your baby on television, and he's not able to move. His fiancee was also near Houston, washing her car. Soon she would find out the horrible news. Soon, everyone would find out the horrible news as the doctor reported in a TV news broadcast that Kevin was in critical condition, his life was at risk, never mind the fact that he possibly might never again be able to walk. Luckily, Kevin's doctor who was in the ambulance with him, tried a new procedure to immediately cool his spinal column. Also, he was fortunate he had a neuro-surgeon waiting for him at the trauma hospital. Slowly, very slowly, he began making progress. Eventually, he was stable enough to be flown to The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, a rehabilitation hospital near his home in Houston. At TIRR, he continued making great progress. He took his first steps there. Mind you, very few people who sustain that kind of injury are ever able to take a first step. But he did, and he continues to keep proving the experts wrong. When he walked on the Oprah show recently, he proved to have made a miraculous recovery. If you had not known him or his story, you would not have realized that he had an injury that almost cost him his life. Back at TIRR, many patients are obliged to learn to deal and cope with dramatic changes after those life altering experiences. A person, often, is simply thankful for the small things, like being able to brush one's teeth, tying one's shoes, combing one's hair, etc. The small things in life are really huge. Often, it takes much time to deal with the many losses. However, with a positive attitude, support, as well as many other factors, life after a spinal cord injury can be very successful. The proverb, Be thankful for what you have, and do not dwell on what you have lost is a great attitude. The patients at TIRR realize this, and people everywhere should accept that proverb, since everyone in life experiences some kind of loss. That is the definition of being human. Kevin Everett, and so many others, are trying to show the world that life is not over when one sustains a major loss. In fact, for many it is just beginning. Perhaps the reason Kevin Everett healed so miraculously was because of the care he received in the ambulance, or in the hospital, or in the rehab hospital, or because of his excellent conditioning, or because of his faith, or because of so many other reasons, or a combination of the above. Today, he is doing great and helping others. Many people, who have sustained a spinal cord injury, as well as those who have not, possess the desire to get better. For many, that equates to being more independent. People want to believe that getting better is possible. People enjoy stories with happy endings, and people want to be positive. Kevin Everett's story reminds us that sometimes there are happy endings. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had received the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Lora
Hi Becky, I don't know if anybody answered this already. An infant feeder is a hard plastic rounded baby bottle that feels more like a jar than a bottle. There is a bottom part that screws on and a disk with holes in it that fits on there after you put the baby food or cereal in it. The nipple is larger than a regular baby bottle nipple and there is a larger hole in it. As the baby sucks on the nipple, the bottom part pushes the food up, so the baby doesn't get all that air in their stomach. it is a little bit of work cleaning it because it all comes apart for cleaning. But it is a really easy way for a blind person to feed a small baby who is still to young to balance in the high chair and hold a spoon or have you feed them with a spoon. This way it doesn't go all over and more gets into the baby than on the baby. But someone told me they looked recently and the infant feeders did not have that little disk with holes in it on there. So i may be picturing what I used almost 29 years ago for Debbie. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Sherri
Hi Janet, What age of kids ride on your bus and do you have a lot of trouble with kids misbehaving? I like hearing about Bryce and Ashley because it reminds me of when Debbie and Georgie were growing up. Sometimes I really got stressed out but if I would have only known how quickly those times pass by I would have relaxed and enjoyed them more. Now I only have one big baby, George, and four animal babies, but back then there were sometimes as many as 8 kids around because I was babysitting and they had friends over. So sometimes I thought I was going to go hairy! But looking back on it, I am glad their moms trusted me with the kids, being I am blind and George has cerebral palsy. We even did the Cub Scout thing for a little while. I hope your guys will adjust to the new school year and the new environments. i remember it well! Thanks for bringing a reflective smile, and a little bit of being grateful that the only stress on me the next day or so is that the refrigerator man is coming tomorrow and I have to take everything out and wipe it down today. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Sherri
Hi Janet, No, Debbie and George do not so far have any intention of having children. if any one did, i think it would be in George's future. He is starting to do projects to fix up the house. He says he is doing the wheelchair ramp and deck this year. He wants to do the kitchen and bathroom. Also work on the basement. Who knows? Debbie is living with a guy, and working in management at Applebee's/ She feels she would not make a good parent, wants to travel, work and enjoy herself. She will be 29 in November, and is now older than I was when she was born. We waited five years after we were married before she came along. My birthday is the 24th of this month. I really feel old when i think of the fact that the baby from next door that I watched and changed diapers for when he was four weeks old in 1991 is now 18 years old. His older brother was six when I began to take care of him, and he is one of my son's bosses now. I am always laughing at some of the funny things they used to say. i think George and I remember those things better than the kids do. When Ashlee graduates I don't know what I am gonna do,, bawl a lot more, cuz I will think my kids don't need me anymore, they will be grown and on their own. My route is the Special Needs and preschoolers. I have a full size bus, and its always full. I love my route and hope to continue till I retire or till I can't drive a bus anymore. I have a morning, noon, and pm route. I will be doing a lot of Ashlee's sport trip like I did for Bryce. He was Basketball and Wrestling. Ashlee will do Volleyball,Basketball, and track. Now that she's able to do sports again she is gonna do it all! lol Do you have any grandchildren yet to spoil? I am old enough to be granma,, But Bryce is not old enough to become a daddy yet, He will be 18 the 23rd of this month.. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Sherri
Debbie and George are almost 22 months apart. it had more advantages than not i think. They have had times of not getting along for ver short periods but not long. They know most of the same people. Now for instance, Debbie's ex is going with another girl from that group, who is the sister of the girl who is with George's best friend. if that makes sense, good luck. So of course Debbie doesn't want to show up somewhere if Rob and Megan are going to be there, and blah, blah, blah. But George will go and hang out with Debbie separately, but Debbie can get kind of moody sometimes. She was brilliant as a small child, reading at age two. George took longer, and we home schooled him for two years, what would have been his 4th and 5th grade years. But we were happy to put him back into 6th grade. He fell in love with history before he got into high school and I think that saved him. He watched a series called Connections that was done by Dr. James Burke and that transformed him or something, I don't know how to explain it. He also has worked with cars a lot. He has thought of goinbg back to school but has not gotten there yet. he has a lot more patience than Deb. I think one of the worst things each one did as a baby was take off a messy diaper and paint the wall and their matress. Oh, it was awful! Good thing George the big one could still walk then and could help and direct me. Debbie did it in the play pen and George did it in the crib I think. No, it was the reverse, because Debbie also painted the side of the chest of drawers. Ugh! Georgie did a couple funny things when he was around three. We were in the home center store called Forest City back then. He was sitting in that little seat in the shopping cart facing me and I held the handle and George pulled it along and that was how we shopped. a man came along smoking some weird pipe tobacco, and I must admit it smelled weird. But out pops Georgie with..everywhere ...we...go...the...smail...goes ...too! The guy looked at him and we had to get out of the store fast because it hurt holding the laughter. Then we went out to the Renaissance Center in Detroit. On the 73rd floor you could look out of all glass to see the city. There was a restaurant called the Summit and it is expensive and it would revolve once an hour or so and people can eat and have a nice view and pay a lot and be all dressed up and all that. Well, it was raining that day and Georgie spoke again in his slow drawn out way that he did then. All...of...the...people...are...eating..in..the...rain. We all kind of looked at each other, like..what did he say? Sure enough, when the other people looked out the window, it looked likeall these people were suspended in mid-air eating dinner! of course, the rain made a reflection. That was amazing. Yes, I know what you mean about horse's petunias! When I first was expecting Debbie, they sent a nurse from the County Health Dept. Her name was Mary, and she was supposed to monitor me, in case I had questions or whatever. Hicegirl, she teased me about having a basketball. Debbie was very high up when i was carrying her and it did kind of look like I had a basketball in there! Well, the time she came over after Debbie was born, she started quibbling about how I was holding Debbie. Well, heck, if it felt comfortable for me and Debbie, and she wasn't complaining...give me a break! i finally politely asked this Mary if she had ever had children. I found out she had not, and then I very kindly asked her if maybe we didn't need to see each other again. I felt, heck, since she had never given birth or bonded with a baby, who the hell was she to tell me how to hlold her? So that was the last I saw of Mary, no offense taken by her. The only thing I may have done was turn both my kids into night owls because sometimes I would walk into the kitchen with them to get a bottle or whatever, and forget to puton the light for them. George was always telling me to put on the light. I know neither one of them was ever scared of the dark. Both used to wlrk night shift at the medical testing lab vcalled Quest, Debbie still works late sometimes and Georgie had all night shifts at Tim Horton's.. Bad bad me for forgetting light switches sometimes! [RecipesAndMore] Update On Dan
We have good news about my brother, Dan. Dan was released from the hospital at around 10:15 Thursday evening where he had a brief stay in the emergency room after being released earlier that day. Our son brought him back to our house where we talked a couple hours and then he spent the night on our couch. Then early Friday morning our son took him to his work where he picked up his car and got several prescriptions. He is back home where he needs to rest, recover, and become used to changes in diet and several different medications. He is a diabetic now and there are conditions that are being monitored with his heart, bladder, blood thinners, injections and I can't think of much more. But he has lost some weight, is looking well rested, speaking and breathing easier. And all the wondering and uncertainty is over. There is a long road ahead but i am happy he got there in time to catch all of these conditions and have a lot of options for treatment. We are happy to have him back. Our son, George Elvis, will do some more of the work that Dan had done for us during the last ten years as a service provider and of course a great brother. [RecipesAndMore] New Dog
On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, our new dog, Cocoa, came to live with us. She is a two-year-old mix of lab and pit bull. She is much smaller than Sam and has a very sweet personality so far. She is a little doll and I think we will be very happy with her. We adopted her from the same animal shelter where we got Sam. Her former owner had to give her up because he was going into the Navy. There is a lot for all of us to to learn but I am hoping it will work out for us and Cocoa. [RecipesAndMore] Sam Passed Away
Hello Everyone, Our dog, Samuel Morse Leggett, or Sam, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009. He was a lab mix, mostly yellow lab. He was with us since October 16, 1999 when we adopted him from the Macomb County Animal Shelter when he was 3 or 4 years old, so he must have been 13 or 14 when he passed. He was having breathing problems and our son took him to the vet. They gave him oxygen and medication for pain. However, they said it would be very expensive for tests and X-rays, and the treatment may not even work because of his age and condition. We will miss him. very much. I had to make that decision with my 5th dog Rena who was at that time the best dog I ever had. She was the only one I have ever kept after retirement. If Mike didn't have a dog we probably would have kept my dog Ross or his dog Ira but 4 large dogs in a single trailer just doesn't quite cut it. The retired boys now live with Mike's uncle. The have 3 dogs and 5 cats in a single trailer and I think they are nuts, but it's their problem. They thought about taking Ivy but thankfully for Ivy couldn't afford it and it would be too crowded. Ivy is happy in her new home with 2 children and a cat to chase. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---
[RecipesAndMore] Re: Alberta ... Lora
Well, that is sad but as you said, this new leading Lady is going to make it all worthwhile. Who knows, Ivy may really enjoy being a pet dog with this family of children and animals. But her physical problems and pain will eventually take over as she ages, and then decisions will have to be made. But for awhile she will hopefully enjoy her new family. Lora Lora, Ivy had too many problems both physical and emotional that just couldn't be worked with. She had something wrong where she couldn't put pressure on her front right foot and her back sometimes swelled up making it look like a camel hump. She would shift in harness and whimper or really yipe. She equated work and pain and me and resented me. Towards the end she would walk the other way when called or go into another room refusing to go outside. She was a sad dog and never was really happy. I could probably go on and on but don't want to take up list space and time. Let's just say she was overly stressful. The word no meant absolutely nothing to her and she was also too strong for me. Well, that's over and a new chapter has been opened. Lady is just awesomeand today was no exception. We had traffic checks and worked at a local mall. She did absolutely terrific. I have a sore throat and chest congestion so going to get a mug of ice and water, take the little leading Lady out and go to bed early. Tomorrow is puppy raiser day and hers are coming. Sunday I may be going out with Ivy's raiser which should be fun. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---
[RecipesAndMore] Re: New dog:
Wow! Well, I only had Peace, who passed away in 1986. I also tried to get a Leader Dog and her name was Ashley, and that was in 1999. Long story but they didn't let me continue with her and I later found out she went to a person I used to tape with in Pittsburgh. It was wonderful closure for me to know she went to a person that I knew. Our pet dog Sam will be with us ten years in October. Best of luck in your training. Well, you know what happens to braille on thin paper over time. The dots get squished down. That meal was so good when I made it shortly after we got married and i have wanted to make it again. She is a very careful and conscientious worker and is a definite keeper and will be coming home with me on July 10th. That is, if I survive the heat and humidity, and some of my classmates. Have to go and do some extra work with my trainer and then tonight is a night walk so it's a late night.
