Call Motorola @ 800-422-4210.

Ask for 6881089E50

That's the printed version @ $100

It is also available on CD.

I find it interesting that there have been responses to this thread
from key people involved with several of the controller manufacturers.
This speaks very highly of these companies.

In my opinion, we are fortunate to have such a variety of products
targeted to a relatively small market. I have personally been
involved with repeaters that use controllers from several of these
companies - all with excellent results.

I think we should thank these folks for building these fine products!

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: grid Dip meter - used for tuning front end?

2004-12-29 Thread Benjamin Naber

Alright, I have a MFJ-269 and just love the thing.

I suppose depending on the filter being
designed/tested would determine what the dip means?
ie, if you are building a Band-reject filter, the dip
means that is the there-about freq where most
attenuation is? and vise versa with a band-pass?

[Repeater-Builder] Re: voice identification

2004-12-29 Thread Coy Hilton

Are you looking for a station or repeater?
For a station you can build one from the voice recorders that radio
shack sells. Or locate a ISD recorder chip and throw a 555 timer at
it and there you have it...or you can do it all in software with a
PC.
For a repeater, most are part of the controllerunless there is a
Echolink/Echotime Link to it then it could be done in Echotime or
Echolink.

What hasn't been said in this thread is that there is rarely, if ever, a
need to download all of that information. The RLC-3 has literally
thousands of settings (making it extremely flexible, which is necessary for
a controller that can run eight repeaters independently at the same
time). Those settings default to reasonable values, so you need only to
program an ID to get on the air. The recommended way of setting it up is
to send only the CHANGES to the defaults, which takes only a few
minutes. As long as you keep a file on your computer with a record of
those changes, there is no reason to download all of the settings from the
controller. The download feature of the QuickStart software was added to
help those that had already programmed the controller via DTMF or inherited
a controller but no record of the programming and wanted to recover a copy
of the controller's settings.

[Repeater-Builder] Mil-Spec RG-214/U Cable

2004-12-29 Thread Eric Lemmon

The 6-page official Military Specification for RG-214/U (now
M17/190-1) cable can be downloaded at:

The most recent QPL (Qualified Products List) names only two approved
suppliers for this cable:

Rockbestos Suprenant Cable Company
Times Microwave Systems

While such trusted manufacturers of coaxial cable as Alpha and Belden
do, in fact, make some very good RG-214/U cable that they claim meets
MIL-C-17 specifications, Uncle Sam has bestowed approval only upon the
QPL firms. The price of silver being what it is, I would expect
"RG-214/U" cable that sells for much less than the price for genuine
RG-214/U probably is tin-coated instead of silver-coated. How many
buyers can tell the difference? Caveat Emptor!

not pass audio other than white noise. It has not been modified and
just stop working in the middle of a transmission. Transmit audio is
fine and the Vol and Squelch controls will control the white noise
however no modulated audio will pass. I have some points to check but I
need the print out to locate the audio chain.

[Repeater-Builder] Web Beacons

2004-12-29 Thread Budd Turner

For your information ...

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo
Group users around the net and see what
you're doing and where you are going - similar to cookies. Yahoo is
recording every website and every group you visit. Take a look at
their updated privacy statement:

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see
a link that says web beacons.
Click on the phrase web beacons.

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/beacons/details.html

That will bring you to a paragraph entitled, "Outside the Yahoo
Network." In this section you'll see a little, "click here to opt
out" link that will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping.

Once you have clicked that link, you are exempted.

Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page.
BE CAREFUL because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button
that, if clicked, will *undo** the opt-out.

I believe that 1/4" heliax only comes in superflex. The previous suppliers
just mentioned for RG-214/U I believe all carry it.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Retune Phoenix

2004-12-29 Thread Wade Lake

If I might make a suggestion, you may want to consider a Motorola
Mitrek. A friend of mine built the NC7J DX Cluster Node several years ago.
http://nc7j.qrq.com/site_description.htm When he did, he asked me what
radio would be good for this job. I suggested a Mitrek. We originally
looked for one that was the lower government split so it could be easily
tuned for 421 MHz. Those proved hard to come by so I tried tuning a
standard 450 - 470 MHz split radio. I was stunned by how well it worked,
without any noticeable degradation in TX or RX. The conversion to 9600 baud
packet was a snap too. This was around 7 years ago and the radio has
performed flawlessly. Also, you can pick up a Mitrek for 10 or 20 bucks at
a swap meet.

If there is one opening on the top plugged, you've likely got the vari-notch

Those should be good for 350 watts, 90-100 dB isolation per channel, 1.5-2.2
dB loss per side. Nice cans. The small tuning rod is the fine tuning
adjustment for the bandpass, I believe.

Not necessarily. I have a dual VHF isolator that "didn't quite make it"
down to 2 meters. Not sure of the manufacturer, but it has the load
integrated (body of isolator is heat sink).

I removed a cover plate (sits right on the side of the magnet) to look
inside & noticed that the operating freq. of that section dropped
considerably. I concluded that simply drilling small holes in the cover
plates & reinstalling them would drop it into the 2 meter band.

Maybe a picture would help. But they should tune to the ham band,
regardless. You don't really give us much to go on. Or you could check their

If that freq. was stamped by the factory, it should tune down to 440 MHz
with no mods or cable changes.

[Repeater-Builder] Isolator/Circulator retune

2004-12-29 Thread albemarle7

Purchased a nice RFS Systems model PCC150-B off E-Bay set for 158.1 mhz. Sent
it to factory for realignment to 2 meter band. Required test for magnet and
reglue, replacement of a coil and re adjustment, modification of filter, reset
isolator output trap. Cost was $125 plus shipping back in May 2001. One of my
smarter moves. Did not attempt to touch it with my VOM, grid dip osc, vise
grips and hammer. Definitely a factory required job.

[Repeater-Builder] Maratrac

2004-12-29 Thread MZFB

Hi all
I wonder if someone has a print of the audio section of a VHF Maratrac receiver. I just need the part that would cover from the Discriminator to speaker output. I have a Maratrac receiver that will not pass audio other than white noise. It has not been modified and just stop working in the middle of a transmission. Transmit audio is fine and the Vol and Squelch controls will control the white noise however no modulated audio will pass. I have some points to check but I need the print out to locate the audio chain.
Thanks in advance
Mike

[Repeater-Builder] Re: grid Dip meter - used for tuning front end?

2004-12-29 Thread skipp025

Hi Ben,

Only if you had a lot of spare time. The common
Grid Dip Oscillator tends to be relatively broad
banded compared to more modern tools like the
MFJ-259 and a Service Monitor. Other issues like
the frequency drift need to be kept under control.

Loop coupling is fine, you just have to make
sure you're past the min critical loop length
to keep the coupling issues out of the main
picture. So a 3 inch hairpin style loop or
two/three turns of wire around a 1/2, 3/4 or
1 inch form will probably work. Lead length
is not an issue as long as you keep things
smart.

good luck

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Isolators / Harmonic filters

2004-12-29 Thread Eric Lemmon

Neil,

As you have probably found out, low-band VHF isolators are not cheap.
Also, they have very little tunable range from the factory-set
frequency.

It's one of the annoying marketing practices that seems to come as a
surprise to many Hams who receive donated isolators. Case in point: A
local radio club received a mint-condition Sinclair I-2213T dual
isolator that was pulled from Government service in the 163 MHz band.
The initial joy at receiving a dual isolator that is specified as having
a frequency range of 132-174 MHz was dampened when the club members
learned that a ferrite isolator is field-tunable over a very narrow
range- in this case, just +/- 2.5 MHz. That's a LONG ways from the 2m
band!

The club sent the isolator back to Sinclair for remanufacturing to the
exact frequency needed for the 2m repeater, and it cost just $250 to
have this done. It took almost three weeks, but when it came back, it
was a perfect unit- fully tested and guaranteed.

I have never tuned a low-band isolator, but I understand that the tuning
range is much narrower than high-band VHF and UHF units. The best
course of action, I think, is to contact the manufacturer of the
isolator, advise the part number and current frequency, and ask about
getting it retuned to a Ham frequency. If the charge is about a third
the cost of a new isolator, it's probably a fair charge.

Mike, I also looked at your post on this on another site.
The problem is NOT in the audio stage(s).

Did you check the second oscillator crystal, the 44.645mhz one? They
do fail. You can hear it on a scanner tuned to 44.645 closly coupled
to the receiver, with the large shiled removed. If the osc is running
then the problem is in the HI IF or RF stages.
