Chris GMRS Inc. --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Tony KT9AC kt...@... wrote: Hi everyone, A while ago I was troubleshooting a bad feedback or growl problem that was impacting a UHF repeater, of which the short term workaround was to not encode TX PL (PL or DPL would keep it locked until the signal dropped enough or timed out). In doing some more research, I found a 1250kHz AM station within a mile or two that changes pattern between day and night. The interference mentioned above would appear around drive times (like 5pm) so that had me chasing other sources. Still, it was puzzling that a 5Mhz signal could be causing the feedback (it didn't appear when doing normal receiver testing with a service monitor). The recent give away was that I could hear talking underneath my test signal (like a sports show). So, if we take the 1250Khz signal or 1.25Mhz x 4 = 5Mhz. I realize that the 4th harmonic of a 5KW broadcast station isn't very powerful, but being in its nearfield might be enough to cause a mix with the UHF transmit output. Does this make sense? This phenomenon can be duplicated with both a 450 and 440 repeater system - both with standard 5Mhz offsets. I don't think any sort of filtering would work since the mix happens in the air. Only by having split PL's can the lockup be prevented, and equipment was both MSF5000 and Micor systems, through correctly tuned duplexers. Thanks, Tony

The radio shown in the photo is called a RCA Tac 300, RCA's answer to a Maxar. On UHF Models it used crystals same as a Motorola Maxar, and if equipped with PL (separate board), the tone board used 2 precision resistors to select a tone frequency. Years ago, the PD arrested a guy breaking into a snow plow dealer late night. Searched his house found tons of truck accessories, tires, rims, landscaping equipment, light bars, 50 radios, scanners, TV's home electronics, etc. Turns out this fellow had a long history of shoplifting and BE on those places, including numerous shops, (ours 3 TIMES), closed out 25 BE cases by SEAZING the evidence, and returning it to the rightful owners after trial. Arrest him and not seize the stuff, guarantee it will bne gone as soon as he gets out on bail. At least this way he can claim his stuff, if he can show it is actually his. Strange twist of fate, several years later, guy shows up at out shop, NOW a rehabbed citizen, new trucks and a bank check to buy 12 mobiles for his new landscaping business. Also apologized. [Repeater-Builder] Re: Repeater Insurance?
Eric is correct. Site owners do not have any interest in the tenant equipment in regards to theft or vandalism, concern is for liability in incidents that someone may feel they should cover as the owner, just like someone falling on a crack in your sidewalk. As a property manager, have seen some frivilous claims, and some with true merit. 1) Hired a local from down the road, to mow grass at a tower site, HIS tractor tossed a rock and hit his son, wanted us to pay for ER room stitches. 2) Ham group that we donated space at a site, one of the club members dropped a power supply on his foot, broken bones, his carrier attempted to file a claim on us for loss of wages. 3) Ham group that we donated space at a site, thought it would be a good idea to put in backup battery at a roof top site, no prior permission, dropped battery, acid all over the copper grounding straps, no insurance to cover replacement cleanup. 4) Ham group that we donated space at a site, got truck stuck at the site, deceided to use one of the fence posts to winch out the truck, bent the fence, jammed the only entry gate, no insursnce to cover the repair. 5) Ham group, paid tenant, had their Mstr3 controller stolen, attempted to file a claim as they had no insurance. Unfortunately we are unable to offer site space without heavy insurance, naming ourselves and the property owner as additionally insured. All different sites, years apart, even nonsense claims take time to resolve. Lets face it, accidents happen, and I am sure some family who has lost their income or has medical expenses due to an accident at a site will be looking to recover (sue) from someone. That mentality began years ago when a cheap Amateur antenna was sloppily installed at a site and later fell, taking out a couple of antennas belonging to paying customers, and they were very unhappy with that situation. Sold many of them, typical with a well tuned duplexer is about 10 watts best, average 8-9 watts. Lets face it, if during an Antenna Party club organized or not, if someone is injured or killed, the family of the injured party will be bringing action against anyone in sight. The same would also apply to incidents after the fact caused by the equipment or work done with permission of the club. It would be very rare, but lets say the new club repeater caused a fire, cable entry point caused a leak, batteries vented fumes, etc. etc etc., the site owners insurance would be looking to recover damages from the responsible party. Even if the party being sued is deemed not responsible, the legal bills and grief are tremendous. As a commercial site manager owner, I have been mostly unable to allow ham clubs on our sites as they could not obtain proper insurance, naming us and the property owners as additionally insured. The site owner is responsible for so much as a twisted ankle for hams or any other person visiting the site. My lawn contractors must have proper insurance, causes a hell of a problem getting a job done cheaply, but I make no exceptions. There are lawyers who will sue for falls on a cracked sidewalk, if someone is injured at a site, what makes you think they may may not be forced to sue even if they did not want to ??? Under no circumstances would I allow a ham club to install their own antennas, my insurance company would cancel me immediately.Proper procedure is to hire out the job to licensed and insured contractors with proper liability AND workers comp insurance, PERIOD. I also insist that all installations be supervised and Signed off by myself just as if the ham club were a commercial paying customer, access limited to an authorized access list and sign in/out log, no extra vistors, wives or buddies allowed. Insurance is available, condo associations, flea markets, ham swaps and many others purchase insurance, find a way to pay for good insurance. When you sign up for insurance, have two club members in attendance with the agent, take notes and ask good questions, make sure the coverage works for any scenario. Saying, the members made me do it wouldn't be a defense. You choose to follow the member's wishes, or in the worst-case scenario, you are forced to resign and say you're unable to fulfil them. Corporations, Partnerships, and so-called Limited Liability Corporations are all handled a little differently, both in general, and also in different jurisdictions. For example, in aircraft partnerships, it's common to build those as an LLC and one should never say they own an airplane. You say, I own a portion of the incorporation that owns the airplane, if you're truly doing it right. If someone hears you say you own the plane with Mr. X, and X had a bad day and put the airplane down through negligence through a roof into someone's living room, or worse, he loses it and decided to start dropping grand pianos on unsuspecting motorists from the airplane you jointly own, and a lawyer can prove you treated it more as a Partnership than an LLC, his temporary lack of good judgement could mean your assets are seized until a judge decides your true relationship with Mr. X. Far easier to just say Mr. X crashed the corporation's aircraft and hire your own lawyer to make sure you get your money back from the insurance company during the ensuing legal battle between the Corporation and Mr. X for the replacement costs of the aircraft. Most ham club's biggest liability risk (to me anyway) of real losses comes on tower climbing day.
