You shouldn't need much in the way of manuals to do the basic go,
no-go testing. A received signal should indicate on both the RX
Radio and the Zetron front panels. The Zetron should indicate
valid tone/dcs codes and the Tx activity should be indicated on
both the Zetron and TX Radio front panels.

Step two depends on the answer(s) to the above question.

146.2 Hz. is the tone he needs.

The PL encoder plugs into the exciter, not the card cage. One jumper

After he installs such a card, would the repeater transmit

Yes.

Third question - Are there any other cards or PL modules out

 Hi Guys,
We have been experimenting with building CTCSS Units using the 567
Tone Chip and good components, i.e. Caps, multi turn pots etc. The
stability is not good in my opinion. We will set it to 107.2 and the
next time you check it is off enough to where it won't decode until it
is re-tuned slightly. I am wondering what your experiences may have been
with this CTCSS Chip. Many articles say they work well with the addition
of a stable voltage regulator, so we added a five volt regulator, no
difference in stability. Any comments and experiences with this and
other chips would be appreciated. The availability of CTCSS Chips seems
limited.

Hi everyone,
A while ago I was troubleshooting a bad feedback or growl problem
that was impacting a UHF repeater, of which the short term workaround
was to not encode TX PL (PL or DPL would keep it locked until the signal
dropped enough or timed out).

In doing some more research, I found a 1250kHz AM station within a mile or two
that changes pattern between day and night. The interference mentioned above
would appear around drive times (like 5pm) so that had me chasing other
sources. Still, it was puzzling that a 5Mhz signal could be causing the
feedback (it didn't appear when doing normal receiver testing with a service
monitor). The recent give away was that I could hear talking underneath my test
signal (like a sports show).

So, if we take the 1250Khz signal or 1.25Mhz x 4 = 5Mhz. I realize that the 4th
harmonic of a 5KW broadcast station isn't very powerful, but being in its
nearfield might be enough to cause a mix with the UHF transmit output.

Does this make sense? This phenomenon can be duplicated with both a 450 and 440
repeater system - both with standard 5Mhz offsets. I don't think any sort of
filtering would work since the mix happens in the air.
Only by having split PL's can the lockup be prevented, and equipment was both
MSF5000 and Micor systems, through correctly tuned duplexers.
Thanks,
Tony

2010-01-31 Thread tracomm
The radio shown in the photo is called a RCA Tac 300, RCA's answer to a Maxar.
On UHF Models it used crystals same as a Motorola Maxar, and if equipped with
PL (separate board), the tone board used 2 precision resistors to select a tone
frequency. In UHF 25 watts, VHF was 30 watts, think they were 10.7 IF, and I
recall using Regency scanner xtals on the RX.
Nothing fancy, plain jane mobile. Requires an amplified mic.

A $50.00 Motorola Radius ebay mobile will be a much better choice, unless you
have a strange urge to waste money on crystals.

The RCA Tac 200 was a 2 piece unit similiar to a GE Mastr2 mobile.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Motorola MTR2000 Question

2009-08-14 Thread TRACOMM

We can beat this topic to death, the MTR will do just about anything,
MANY different setups, multiple channels, remote control channel change,
etc. etc. etcIf the MTR units have a duplexer, and being used as a
repeater, highly unlikely that they are multiple channels.

I suggest:

Have a tech with MTR software (experienced with the MTR), look at the
system and determine how they are setup and what frequencies are in
them.

Then you will know what channels are where, and if there is still a
third channel out there, have a good old fashioned fox hunt.

Over the last few weeks, we have been trying to determine the location
of our repeater. The place were it is listed on the FCC license
paperwork does not exist. I know, I am pushing them to get it updated.
But that is another story all together.

I do have access to a radio house located at our high school football
field and it has two MTR2000 in it, plus two different antennas. One
connected to one radio and one connected to the other.

One radio is marked with the description of KISD PD, which is our police
department for the district and has the following frequency pair listed
on it:

VHF: RX 173.325 DPL 331 and TX 158.385 DPL 331
The other radio is marked the following:
  UHF: 451.725 / 456.725

There is no documentation with this equipment, the person incharge of
them originally left the district some years ago and no one knows
anything about them, expect where they are located, as far as these two
boxes go and what frequencies that have listed.

Which brings me back to our department, we can find out repeater located
anywhere physcially. Our repeater pair is listed as:

UHF: 451.750 / 456.750

That is according to FCC, repeater listing and other information I have
been able to obtain and by listening to it on a UHF amateur radio to see
which frequency they were on.

That being said, it is possible that the MTR2000 that is marked with the
one UHF frequency, might actually have both pairs programmed into it,
but only one can run at a time, right?

Is there a way to find out if there is more than one frequency is
programmed into the unit and if so, how might we go about that? Another
reason I am asking is that we might be upgrading our system in the very
near future and I might be able to get my hands on these repeaters.

Thanks in advance.

Can a Motorola MTR2000 setup on UHF be setup to function as a repeater
on more than one pair of frequencies? I know looking at the brochure on

Does that mean it can handle two different sets of repeater pairs at
the same time in the same radio? These are commercial frequencies I am
listed at commercial, but they are for example purposes:

Can the following setup work with the MTR2000?
  Frequency Pair 1: 451.725/456.725

Eric is correct.

Site owners do not have any interest in the tenant equipment in regards
to theft or vandalism, concern is for liability in incidents that
someone may feel they should cover as the owner, just like someone
falling on a crack in your sidewalk.

As a property manager, have seen some frivilous claims, and some with
true merit.

1) Hired a local from down the road, to mow grass at a tower site,
HIS tractor tossed a rock and hit his son, wanted us to pay for ER room
 stitches.

2) Ham group that we donated space at a site, one of the club members
dropped a power supply on his foot, broken bones, his carrier attempted
to file a claim on us for loss of wages.

3) Ham group that we donated space at a site, thought it would be a
good idea to put in backup battery at a roof top site, no prior
permission, dropped battery, acid all over the copper grounding straps,
no insurance to cover replacement cleanup.

4) Ham group that we donated space at a site, got truck stuck at the
site, deceided to use one of the fence posts to winch out the truck,
bent the fence, jammed the only entry gate, no insursnce to cover the
repair.

5) Ham group, paid tenant, had their Mstr3 controller stolen,
attempted to file a claim as they had no insurance.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer site space without heavy
insurance, naming ourselves and the property owner as additionally
insured.

All different sites, years apart, even nonsense claims take time to
resolve.

Lets face it, accidents happen, and I am sure some family who has lost
their income or has medical expenses due to an accident at a site will
be looking to recover (sue) from someone.

The good old days are gone.

 3) What should I hear on the line when the PTT on the handset is

The same would also apply to incidents after the fact caused by the

rare, but lets say the new club repeater caused a fire, cable entry
point caused a leak, batteries vented fumes, etc. etc etc., the site
owners insurance would be looking to recover damages from the
responsible party.

Even if the party being sued is deemed not responsible, the legal bills
and grief are tremendous.

As a commercial site manager owner, I have been mostly unable to allow
ham clubs on our sites as they could not obtain proper insurance, naming
us and the property owners as additionally insured. The site owner is
responsible for so much as a twisted ankle for hams or any other person
visiting the site. My lawn contractors must have proper insurance,
causes a hell of a problem getting a job done cheaply, but I make no
exceptions.

There are lawyers who will sue for falls on a cracked sidewalk, if
someone is injured at a site, what makes you think they may may not be
forced to sue even if they did not want to ???

Under no circumstances would I allow a ham club to install their own
antennas, my insurance company would cancel me immediately.Proper
procedure is to hire out the job to licensed and insured contractors
with proper liability AND workers comp insurance, PERIOD.

I also insist that all installations be supervised and Signed off by
myself just as if the ham club were a commercial paying customer, access
limited to an authorized access list and sign in/out log, no extra
vistors, wives or buddies allowed.

Insurance is available, condo associations, flea markets, ham swaps and
many others purchase insurance, find a way to pay for good insurance.

When you sign up for insurance, have two club members in attendance with
the agent, take notes and ask good questions, make sure the coverage

For example, in aircraft partnerships, it's common to build those as

If someone hears you say you own the plane with Mr. X, and X had a bad

Far easier to just say Mr. X crashed the corporation's aircraft and

I have a GMRS repeater up and rolling with two antennas using a
Uniden ARU-251 repeater. Its not perfect but it works.
I am shopping for a duplexer and found the little Cellwave duplexers
on Ebay, I can get one tuned and to my door step for roughly $100
Good/Bad?
The locals tell me I have to get a large duplexer that is any good,
is that true? From what I understand, the larger the more efficient
but I am not 100% sure.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: MTR2000 UHF Service manual

I agree with Eric, almost sounds like your 1K (or PL/DPL tone) is on
and affecting the bandpass of the RX. Also check to make sure unit is
not programmed for narrow band operation.
Would also confirm what version of software repeater is running,
could have an old version with known bugs.
Have 50 units on the air and never heard of that issue.

Ebay ham swap items often have odd issues, saw a MTR for sale,
advertised as a 420-470 unit, on 440 ham channels, but looked like a
high power 450-470 unit, contacted seller with my questions and he
explained that unit would only do 60 watts so it must be a full band
unit doing more than the rated 40 watts.Seller didn't think it was
necessary to change his listing.Unit sold for a very high price and
had quite a few bidders, hopefully buyer knew what he was getting.

Factory service is running about $850.00 per module, and about
$1450.00 for a complete repeater. We have repaired a few power
supplies, but rest of unit is factory only service.

 Camilo,
The modules in the MTR2000 station are not user-serviceable, so the
field service manuals do not contain schematic diagrams. If you
believe that the receiver module is defective, you should send it to
the Motorola Infrastructure Depot for repair. I currently have six
MTR2000 stations in service, but have never seen the problem you
describe.

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] MTR2000 UHF Service manual

Need help to order a MTR2000 service manual that have the schematic
diagram of the receiver unit, Got this unit from Ebay, Hook up the
unit on my bench with a dummy load on the TX out, and apply signal on
the RX input with a IFR1200, The squelch open at 0.12 micro-volt at
0.15 uv its 12 DB Sinad, when signal was increased to about 1.0
micro-volts or higher the receiver drop out, as if the agc is
overloaded that cut out completely and also drop the TX, Have
anyone ever experience this problem before, This is the first time I
have seen this kind of problem , and its hard to fix it w/o a
diagram. any help is highly appreciated.
