[speedtouch] Re: Will firmware patch affect WinXP usage ?
Simon Morgan a écrit : In a word, no. AFAIK the firmware is uploaded to the modem each time the driver is initialised so when you run the modem under Windows it will upload the firmware that comes with the Windows drivers. Correct. It is not a patch which could modify your modem. It's a full firmware because there is no firmware at all in the modem itself. Thus a firmware needs to be uploaded each time the modem is powered off (unplugged). Benoit PAPILLAULT Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is a usual problem. I think you configure your eth0 interface to have a default route over it (which is wrong). In this case, pppd is no longer adding a default router over ppp0 and thus you have no internet connection. Unfortunatly, the last 2 years, I didn't do any dev on the driver, just a few corrections on docs and scripts. For the personal part, I have been moving around with no internet connection at home for about 2 years. I just settled down 1 month ago and sent the signup form for the internet connection 3 days ago ! Hopefuly I'll be connected in a few weeks. No problem Francois. I have been maintaining the BSD part by checking that each release compiled fine on all BSD variants (using gmake). Considering the Alcatel case, I receive an immediate message from them just after uploading the firmware to my web site. They were asking to remove the firmware which i did. Now, not all companies behave nice. I recently received an email from Sun's lawyer asking me to correct my web site to comply with their Java trademark policies. Again, it was quite a polite request. But now, consider that since your package is online, it will be cached by google or http://www.archive.org/web/web.php or some other site. It now means that your package is no longer in your control and that you cannot remove it anymore! Now, some companies are enforcing their intellectual property right just to get some money... So, like baud123 said, i think it is the right time to join our effort to make a polite request to Thomson (holder of the IP rights) to change their license. At least, it should be made redistributable so your package can be legal. The best would be some DFSG-compliant license to have the driver in main distributions (including GNU/Debian). But that would mean that Thomson has to release the source code as well which is a decision beyong a simple license change. So far, I'm not a lawyer myself, but at least I can ask and try to get in touch with Thomson to discuss that issue. Ideas on the process? [speedtouch] ANNOUNCE: New driver 1.3.1 released
A new driver has been released. This is just a maintenance release to correct a vulnerability that was found in modem_run (part of the speedtouch driver) by Max Vozeler [EMAIL PROTECTED]. In fact, modem_run, pppoa2 and pppoa3 were using syslog() in a wrong way. Strings containing %s (for instance) could be passed to syslog() and used by malicious users to make buffer overflow. Since modem_run is installed setuid on Debian system, there was a security risk. The ID CAN-2004-0834 has been assigned to this vulnerability (See: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2004-0834). First of all, the Makefile scripts are broken and won't compile cleanly, the problem appears when 'sed' is executed. For example, the Makefile.in has: -e 's,@bindir\@,$(bindir),g' \ its missing a \ before the first @, it should be: -e 's,[EMAIL PROTECTED]@,$(bindir),g' \ also, lines like: $(edit) $ [EMAIL PROTECTED] should use correct redirection: $(edit) speedtouch-setup.in [EMAIL PROTECTED] Once all these mistakens are corrected in all the Makefile.in (two of them to be specific) then the driver compiles and installs without further problems. I applied your suggestion in the CVS version. Could you test them ? (I only test them on GNU/Linux and I don't think it will harm on other platform). However, I already tested the code on FreeBSD 5.2.1 and do not have the problem you reported... Furthermore, I take the code from the info page of autoconf... [speedtouch] Re: PPPoE support patch
Tiago Cogumbreiro wrote: Hello all, I wanted to propose to the speedtouch developers a little improvement in the connection script, in the form of a patch. What i am proposing is extending the configuration file to include 3 more entries, namely: * CONN_MODE: the connection mode, pppoe/pppoa * VPI * VCI When the speedtouch-start script is called from hotplug system then the network interface, in case of PPPoE connections, should be brought up, to allow programs like pppoe-conf work with it as a perfectly normal ethernet interface. I wanted to use the opportunity to ask the following, is it true that when pppoa3 is called and creates the tap0 interface it outputs to stdout the created interface? If so then there's a minor alteration on my patch so that the vnet variable points to the actually created interface, to avoid problems with multiple tap interfaces. Thank you for your time, Tiago Cogumbreiro Hi Tiago, Your patch is welcome, but the list does not support attachments except plain text. I would to discuss about PPPoE support since I think there are two ways to handle it in scripts: - either the speedtouch-start creates only the ethernet interface and let other tools (like pppoeconf) to use it. I think this is the proper solution - either the speedtouch-start takes care of everything, ie creating the ethernet interface and launching pppd/pppoe on it. This is what I have implemented and this is the most straightforward way for beginners. However, this leads to some problems right now (mainly the fact that speedtouch-stop destroy everything ... without waiting for PPPoE to send its last packets...). And right, since the version 1.3, the pppoa2/pppoa3 has been modified to output the interface name on stdout. You MUST use this interface. Hi Frédéric! RUAUDEL Frédéric a écrit : Hi all, Following some problems with my ADSL connection, I installed the new drivers 1.3 on my FC2. I found a great improvement with this version, so thanks Benoit ! :) After that, I updated my RPM of speedtouch to version 1.3 and take advantage of the new improvements. * Sun Jun 20 2004 Frederic RUAUDEL [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1.3-2.GrumZ - Patch the speedtouch-start script to clean the mutex created by modem_run and to skip running modem_run if the firmware is already loaded - Patch the location of pppd pid in speedtouch-stop - Remove the startadsl.sh script - Modify the adsl init script to use speedtouch-start/speedtouch-stop - Add the configuration file speedtouch.conf with the good values - Remove the creation of /etc/speedtouch.conf in %post section - Modify the configure line in the %build section to set the good default path to avoid having the buildroot set in the speedtouch-(start|stop) script As you can see, I've had to patch the start/stop script to make it works smoothly on my FC2. Here are the details : 1) speedtouch_clean_mutex.patch This patch fix a problem with the new mutex system of modem_run. When you stop modem_run, the mutex is not cleaned so when you try to start it up again, modem_run just print in /var/log/messages : You undo my change in a way. The mutex is designed to be kept in memory forever (you can remove it if the modem is unplugged, but this currently lead to some race conditions, so it's never removed). If you remove it, speedtouch-start will not work properly (if your stop the connection with speedtouch-stop and start it again using speedtouch-start, the mutex prevents modem_run from loading the firmware again). modem_run version 1.3 started by root uid 0 and then stop without any clue ! After looking at the code I found that it was the mutex deadbeef ;-) So I had an ipcrm in the speedtouch-start script but this is a dirty hack and I think, if this is a bug and not a feature, that benoit will certainly find a better solution :) What is important is the exit code from modem_run, 0 indicates that the line is OK and -1 indicates that there is some problem. 2) speedtouch_check_firmware_load.patch this patch check the state of the ADSL line present in the file /proc/net/atm/speedtch*, and if the line is reported up and the firmware loaded, it skip the launch of modem_run and directly launch pppd instead of failing the load of the firmware and quit. Redundant with the modem_run's mutex. 3) speedtouch_fix_pppd_pid.patch the last one is probably FC2 specific or maybe a missing configuration in my pppd package, but my pppd put its PID in /var/run/ppp0.pid and not in /var/run/ppp-${PPPD_PEER}.pid. So I made this patch to make it work with my current RPMS. Feel free to tell me where I'm wrong, if I am. Two pid files are generated by pppd: /var/run/pppN.pid /var/run/ppp-${PPPD_PEER}.pid [only if you use the link option in your peer file). The later is easier to locate if you have multiple PPP connections at the same time. For other changes, I remove my startadsl.sh script and use the speedtouch-(start|stop) instead and generate a good default speedtouch.conf for the firmware that I provide with my package. The hotplug support works very well for me, another great feature added in 1.3 (I know it's not new, but I never manage to configure it manually ;). Yes. The hotplug is really a nice feature :-) I impressed some of my friends... since it's not possible to have such feature under Windows (for instance). And I added a friendly interface to my RPMs repository with a summary of the things to do to installed my RPMS : http://grumz.dyndns.org/ADSL_FC2 Comments and feedback are welcome ! Hi, I'm the maintainer of the http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/ utility, which is just an automation of the speedtouch.sf.net instructions, for those who just want things to work. (It's just a shell script which does the general config stuff). I've been getting a lot of emails from both: -) SuSE9 Users -) Silver Modem users and, in particular, users of a combination of both, which may be coincidence, or may not? There's the firmware issue (http://www.ihate.freeserve.co.uk/rev4fw.zip), but there seems to be a coding issue, too - silver modem users seem to have a problem with modem_run apparently failing to load the microcode. Can someone confirm: - Are both files in the .zip required? - If so, should they be cat'd together? As *1.eni *2.eni foo.obj? - Are any other patches required to the code? - Has SuSE9 been confirmed to work with the Silver modem? - Has any other distro been so confirmed? There is three different common issues: - for rev4.0 : yes you need both zzzlpx.eni files separatly or together you need the CVS version of the user mode driver to support those firmware (with new -a option for modem_run if you choose separate files options) - for some new distro using 2.6 kernel header, the speedbundle 1.0 does not compile SUSE9 is in this case I think it is corrected in th CVS version of the kernel driver I had no time to try 2.6 kernel so it is just by listening to this list that I heard the facts. Instead of using the CVS version, you can use the 1.2 version of the usermode driver which is just available at http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ Benoit PAPILLAULT Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[speedtouch] speedtouch 1.2 is out!
The speedtouch-1.2 driver is out! You can download it on http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ as usual. All revisions 4.0 modems are now fully supported. Warning: the documentation has not been fully updated yet. Briefly, to use it with a revision 4.0 modem, you need to replace the modem_run command line with: modem_run -a ZZZLP1.eni -f ZZZLP2.eni where ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni are the firmware files from the Windows drivers. [speedtouch] Re: how do i unsubscribe from this list ?
Hi, The mailing list is currently suffering from SPAM. All SPAMS are sent to the robot handling the mailing list (me and francois). I also receive all mail errors (bad smtp, unknow mail, no smtp relay, timeout connecting to smtp, connection refused by smtp, ...). Errors are always increasing, so few information: - If you want to send a mail to the list, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] only (not to [EMAIL PROTECTED] like Duncan or Didier) - People using a mail unknown to one of their SMTP relay will be manually removed from the list (by me!) - People using a badly configured smtp relay (mails ending with 9online.fr, jhpx.com AND vamegh.co.uk no longer works) will be unsubscribe too from now on - People using a badly configured scripts which generates errors will be unsubscribe too from now on. Keep in mind that each mail sent on the list will generates as many mails as there are subscribers to the list. Some errors keeps generated EVERY DAY until the list give up sending mail. One problem with some of those errors is that i cannot reach people having problems (since their mails don't get through). Normally, removing them from the list will send them a last mail... that they will never receive. So, if you are in doubt of being or not on the mailing list, you can ask the robot by sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with only one line: stats Concerning your particular case, here is the error: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: host solveit.hn.org[81.129.99.56] said: 451 Temporary local problem - please try later Regarding my new rules concerning such errors, you'll be removed from the list. Hi all, Wether your problem is related to usb-ohci.c, usbdevfs or the speedtouch driver, it should be solved. Moreover, we know where the error is since it calls the BUG() macro. I faced such problem myself on an old machine and the only thing I found is that the hardware was a little bit buggy (addresses read from some registers did not match addresses written on other registers, which produce a kernel panic). But even if the hardware is buggy, good software design should recover such errors instead of doing a kernel panic so, there must be something to do on the software part ... (kernel or user) Benoit Le Lundi 29 Octobre 2001 12:59, vous avez écrit : Maybe, but that would suggest that even on a faster machine it will eventually crash (my P233 has stayed up for 3-4 days without problem). I'm probably going to order another (more expensive) USB card, to see whether that helps - if it is a scheduling problem it is possible that having a better card might reduce the problem in the same way as having a faster processor. Are you sure that any other program does not use usb? Many another copy of modem_run? Try /usr/sbin/lsof | grep usb as root BEFORE running modem_run. [speedtouch] New release irc #channel.
As usual, you will find the latest release at: http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/speedtouch-09052001.tar.gz There is no major improvements, you won't see timeouts again on endpoint 0x81, since it's handled in a separate process. Be carefull that modem_run fork a separate process and leave it running forever (no pb to leave it, no pb to kill it). I write a work-around for a usbdevfs pb I discovered. In fact, a program can use USB even after releasing the USB interface. It means that none could be displayed next to Driver= in the file /proc/bus/usb/devices == EVEN == if one program is still accessing the USB device. Of course, this work-around only work with my driver. Debugging has been improved a lot. For people having problems, please send us error messages in /tmp/pppoa2.*.log EXCEPT Input/Output error (which just indicates that pppd closed the connection). And please, READ THE FAQ. There is now a registered irc channel on irc.openprojects.net, whose name is #speedtouch. I choose openprojects.net instead of undernet.org, because I found chanserv nickserv easier. [speedtouch] Developper mailing list.
I just created a developper mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). To subscribe, just an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the SUBJECT subscribe. I setup an archive (thanks jpph) at: http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtouchdev@ml.free.fr This new mailing list is intended only for people willing to help the development of the driver (and its various ports). As a suggestion, we may discuss on : - new driver design (more .c files, instead of 3) - rewriting the firmware (microcode) - decoding unknown sequence - more robust design (handling all kind of disconnection) Benoit Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe

On Sat, 5 May 2001, Gilles wrote: Oops, je viens de lire la FAQ ... 9. I have heard about upload problems. What is the current status? This problem is solved by using the HDLC line discipline. No upload or download limits are hardcoded in the driver. The upstream/downstream speed messages is purely informationnal and is not use in any part of this driver.

Voila, voila...
