Two one second, 1000 Hz test tones were sent out ten minutes prior to
transmission. This is one of the longest XPA2 messages that I've ever
recorded.

Recorded Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 1640 UTC.

I also question the validity of the signal, which is why I wanted to ask
the group here if they had logged anything like this.

There are many, many ways to fake a recording and the Internet is full of
that kind of stuff.

Recently on the "Number Stations" sub-Reddit, a couple of recordings of
what sounds like a polytone signal have been recorded on 6139 kHz at
approximately 1120 UTC.

I have tried to decode the signal using both Sorcerer and Rivet 90, without
any success.

Here is a link to a rather poor quality recording of the signal:
https://www.reddit.com/r/numberstations/comments/ils731/ok_today_at_1123_utc_again_on_6139_khz/

Can anyone identify this signal? It sounds a bit like XPA or XPA2, with
some slight differences. I haven't tried monitoring for this signal, so I
don't know whether this was a one-off broadcast, or whether it repeats on a
schedule.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my inquiry (i.e., "Is this email list
still active?"). The numerous replies back proves that everyone is still
around, just that not much has been reported via the list lately.

I mainly frequent the *HF Underground* board and various Reddit radio
categories these days. I'm also pretty active on my Twitter
feed (@StrangeBeacons). And as part of my radio hobby, I still monitor
favorite number stations and other interesting radio signals and
occasionally upload recordings on my YouTube channel.

I tend to get most of the important radio news from the monthly "Spooks
Newsletter" and "Enigma 2000" newsletters, which I share on Twitter.

I'm glad to learn that there are still plenty of folks out there on this
list.

Enjoy the coming summer,

Yes, after I sent out my inquiry, I realized that I had confused that
signal with a completely different one. My apologies for the confusion.

The strange thing is, the signal started off announcing as a null message,

Anyone have any idea if this was an anomaly?

I was alerted to the presence of a new signal on 4770 kHz, which has been
dubbed "The Alarm" signal by a Reddit user.

Link to a recording that I made: https://youtu.be/i4lYzAKXy-8

Link to a Reddit thread about the signal:

Does anyone have any information on this signal? Is it new? When was it
first discovered? Does anyone know the approximate location yet?

Questions:

What approximate time(s) have you heard this signal?

Is there any pattern, i.e., how long does it transmit for during a

Do you have any idea of the approximate location of where the signal is

I tried using Rivet decoder, but couldn't get any settings that I tried to

I've been following a thread on the HF Underground message board about the
radio oddity known as the "Indonesian Chanters." I finally was able to
catch a transmission today via a KiwiSDR located in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Very strange stuff!

Video recording here: https://youtu.be/ypyxzLlkxKE

Several people have suggested that this is some kind of local game being
played by Indonesian villagers with transceivers. It occurs almost nightly,
starting around 1400 UTC and lasting for hours. The signal comes in best
using the Jakarta, Indonesia KiwiSDR.

When I was sailing with the Merchant Marine, I visited Indonesia several
times. There was a type of local liquor there that was distilled from palm
toddy. After a few glasses, I sounded a bit like this, myself, then
remembered nothing more. I'm not saying that is what is happening here,
just kind of throwing the fact out there.

[Spooks] UNID digital signal transmitting on The Buzzer frequency at 4625 kHz (long recording)

45 minute recording of the unusual digital signal transmitting on the
UVB-76 "The Buzzer" frequency of 4625 kHz: https://youtu.be/ldGnS0PkpQE I
monitored 4625 kHz for about two hours during the morning. The normal
"buzz" of the signal cannot be seen or heard under the digital
transmission. That leads me to believe that the typical "buzzer" signal has
been shut off while this transmission is taking place (which, in turn,
leads me to believe that this is not jamming or interference, but a
purposeful transmission of some sort). The digital signal being transmitted
kind of, sort of resembles a STANAG 4285 signal in some aspects, but not
wholly. Perhaps a STANAG variant? Date and time visible on the UTC widget
running at top right of video screen. Tuned via the KiwiSDR located in
Mala, Sweden: http://aspliden.mooo.com:8073/?f=4625usb

I think the mystery of the 40m signal may be solved. It is a little hard to
make out in the most recent video of the signal, but you can see the same
"arrow" image present in a 5 kHz spread across multiple frequencies. So
this signal may actually be HUGE. Since any signal such as this should
NEVER be present in the amateur radio bands, it is considered to be an
"intruder" signal. I did some research online and I'm now starting to
wonder if this may be connected to the intruding OTH radar signal discussed
in this article:
http://www.arrl.org/news/over-the-horizon-radars-becoming-routine-visitors-on-amateur-hf-bands

From the article: "An “often long-lasting” Russian OTH signal about 13 kHz
wide is being heard on the 7000-7100 kHz segment of 40 meters and a
“Codar-like radar from the Far East” are being heard in the 7000-7200 kHz
segment as well as non-amateur CW transmissions."

And yes, Newport, Oregon is located on the west coast of the United States
right next to the Pacific ocean and in relatively close proximity to
powerful signals coming from China and even Russia.

[Spooks] Strange signal on the 40 meter band at 7035.50 kHz

Hello Group:

I was transmitting Digital SSTV on the 40 meter band last Saturday morning
when I spotted a strange signal in the waterfall of the Web SDR that I was
running on my Chrome browser (I always keep an SDR open as I'm transmitting
as I like to watch the images appear on the waterfall as I am sending
them).

I'm not sure if I was tuned to the proper frequency or not, and I tried
both USB and LSB. I suspect that this is likely someone doing a radio test
of some kind. Tuned via the Web SDR located in Newport, Oregon, USA.

Video of the signal here: https://youtu.be/rxTn0P8lsrA

As can be seen on the UTC widget running at the top right of the video
screen, I first noticed this signal at approximately 1715 UTC, Saturday,
December 15, 2018.

I've posted about this video on the HF Underground website under the
section for "HF Mystery Signals" which can be read here:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,48985.0.html

So far, I've had others try to guess what this signal is. I originally
thought that it was someone else sending out Digital SSTV waterfall images,
but after tuning to the signal, I quickly realized that was not the case.
So far, others have suggested RFI from some source, such as a home
appliance (washing machine) to some sort of timer set for a mechanical pump
to the Feld Hell digital mode (which I don't believe is the case) to
something possibly like the HAARP transmissions.

I personally suspect that this was likely some sort of test being run by a
radio amateur. I base my opinion on the fact that the signal was located in
the area set aside on the 40m amateur band for the United States,
specifically for sending/receiving digital modes of all types. The signal
only transmitted for the length of time of up to and over 10 minutes in the
video that I recorded. I monitored the signal for the rest of the day and
it only transmitted sporadically after that, and then only five or six
cycles of the signal were sent (timing them you can see that each cycle is
a roughly six second transmission with a pause of about two seconds
between) and then it would stop again, often for hours. It did, however,
continue to sporadically transmit for the rest of the day and evening.

Also, at one point during the day on Saturday, I opened up three separate
Web SDRs, all tuned to the same signal. One SDR was located in Newport,
Oregon, USA (the SDR on which I originally spotted the signal and which is
the one you see in the video), another was in Weiser, Idaho, and the third
was in Sunnyvale, California. When the strange signal began transmitting
again on the Oregon SDR, I noticed that the signal was *not* appearing on
the other two SDRs. Not the greatest feat of triangulation, but it did lead
me to believe that the signal was likely originating in or very close to
the State of Oregon.

This may be nothing but a one-off anomaly of some sort. But this video has
generated a lot of interest on my YouTube channel and I wanted to ask you
pros what your opinions are.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all,

Hello Everyone:

I have been trying to catch the M08a signal for a couple of weeks now,
with no luck. I'm using the Priyom station schedule and the signal has not
transmitted any of the times that I've tuned in.

Can someone enlighten me as to the best frequencies and times that M08a
transmits?

Also, is it thought that this signal still transmits from Cuba?

Thank you,

While tuning around on a Web SDR located in Vihti, Finland, I discovered
this signal. It was fading in and out and I tried tuning it in on other Web
SDRs located all through Northern Europe. (It was soon apparent that the
Finland Web SDR gave the best signal, so I recorded what I was hearing).

Video recording here: https://youtu.be/Nsx3PBIIc2g

Just over halfway through the video, I changed from USB to LSB (around the
7:20 mark) as I was not sure that I had the proper frequency and mode for
this.

I have no idea exactly what this is (do you?), but it may be some form of
MFSK (Multi-Frequency Shift Keying) mode. I checked through the *Signal
Identification Guide* and the closest thing that I could find that
resembles this signal is here:

Everyone:

This is in regards to my earlier email to the list about the alleged
"seizure" of the EAM Watch website, reportedly by American Federal
authorities.

I just spoke to a moderator I know who has spent a lot of time on that
website, has contributed a lot of material to it, and who regularly
participates in chat with other members of EAM Watch. According to him,
the site owner has said that the website *was not actually seized by the
Federal government*, but was instead, shut down by the site owner himself,
for reasons that seem to be connected to an internal disagreement with a
major contributor to the website's content. (I was sent a confidential
message about this and cannot share much more).

I've also learned that the website will likely be back up by 2200 UTC today.

If I learn more, I'll let you all know. Otherwise, I think that we can all
safely assume that the Feds aren't going to come looking for anyone who
listens to and/or records encrypted and impossible to decrypt information
sent over SSB radio on the public airwaves.

EAM Watch website (allegedly) seized by Department of Homeland Security:
http://eam.watch/index.html

I don't know the backstory on this, or if in fact that this is even real
(could be hackers or a stunt?). But the EAM Watch link above presently
defaults to what appears to be a standard American Justice Department image
claiming seizure of the domain.

I learned about this today via a Reddit thread that can be seen here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/numberstations/comments/7zmaxf/dhs_seizes_eamwatch_domain/

EAM Watch, as many of you may already know, is a website dedicated to
monitoring, recording, and reporting on US military Emergency Action
Messages.

North Korean V15 number station at 657 kHz in AM mode:
https://youtu.be/X0YQhDlfn5Y

There was some interference to the signal from the adjacent AM broadcast,
but still a pretty clear copy.

Anyone know what the title is of the rather melancholy violin piece heard
playing prior to transmission?

Nothing particularly spectacular about this recording. But note that two

Weird signal jamming the Russian E06 "English Man" number station at 12218

and discovered a strange tone being transmitted right on top of their
frequency. Don't know if it was intentional, or not.

Here is a video of the transmission: https://youtu.be/AvkFKha1K90

The UNID "One Beep, Two Beep " signal at 4508
kHz that I submitted to the list on December 8th has returned.

UTC time and date can be seen in the widget running at the top right of the

signal, with variations to the "One Beep, Two Beep" first observed.

UNID "One Beep, Two Beep" signal at 4500.76 kHz

UNID "One Beep, Two Beeps" at 4500.75 kHz

Anyone have any idea what this might be?

I captured a video of an unusual transmission that I've named "One Beep,
Two Beeps" for rather obvious reasons:

https://youtu.be/6pQOSnu4aTQ

This was recorded on Tuesday, November 28th, at approximately 1640 UTC,
using the Utwente WebSDR. Since that time, I have been checking that
frequency several times a day and have never heard the signal again. I was
first notified of its presence by another shortwave listener, who has also
been monitoring the frequency, as well. He has not reported any repeat,
either.

I have no idea what this is, or if it is anything other than just a one-off
anomaly.

[Spooks] Arecibo Observatory ionospheric heating signal or XM Whales?

I recorded this <https://youtu.be/8L6lV4IReCk> while monitoring 5125 kHz,
the known frequency for the Arecibo Observatory ionospheric heating signal.
However, after I posted the video on my YouTube channel, a comment was
posted by a person who informed me that the Arecibo campaign was only
active during the period of July 24th through July 31st. (I recorded this
last night. The time and date can be seen in the UTC widget running at the
top right of the screen). The person who supplied that information believes
that this signal actually might be XM Whales transmitting on the Arecibo
frequency.

Here is a link to the video <https://youtu.be/8L6lV4IReCk> that I recorded.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Russian E07 "English Man" number station at 13363 kHz (long message with
preceding, strange test transmission). I tuned in early to catch this
number station and caught a rather strange test transmission on frequency
prior to the numbers being transmitted. As you can see/hear, it started
with a sound burst, then a strong carrier tone, then what sounds like XPA
polytone sync tones.

Yes, that is near the frequency for JT65 and JT9. I use that mode quite a
bit and when you get a pile up, some very strange and wonderful "music" can
be heard.

Recorded from my Seattle, WA USA radio shack via the UTwente WebSDR at 1840
UTC, Wednesday, March 29. The two previous transmissions of this broadcast,
at 1800 and 1820 UTC, were jammed by other signals on frequency and were
not readable. 15 minutes prior to this transmission, a very strong carrier
signal was transmitted, along with several very strong "pulses" of some
kind. I have not transcribed the number groups. Video of transmission here:

I understand that I need to listen for this transmission on an SDR out of
Israel but I didn't quite understand what you meant by "pasta country." Can
you elaborate?

I did find one SDR that is located in Ariel, Israel. I'm hoping that it may
work in order to record this rather elusive station. The link to the
Israeli SDR that I found is: 4z5lv.net:8901

Can anyone provide a link to an online WebSDR that would help me to catch a
transmission of the E25 Egyptian number station? I am presently using the
UTwente WebSDR but can never manage to catch that station from their
location.

Thanks in advance & 75,

Yes, that earlier email was a rather classic attempt at phishing. Since I
use Gmail, that copy of the mailing list email with the phishing link went
directly to my spam folder, instead of my inbox. I simply deleted it.

[Spooks] Clarification

In an earlier message to the list, I wrote that, "I kind of have my doubts
about the authenticity of these recordings" in reference to the recordings
found on this YouTube channel
.

That may have sounded more harsh than intended. It is just that I have been
following the history of these signals (The Buzzer, The Pip, The Squeaky
Wheel) for a few years now and have always been under the impression that
live voice transmissions from these signals is a rather rare occurrence.

What I should have asked is, have others noted that there has been such a
dramatic increase in live voice transmissions from these signals over the
last few weeks?

In the age of the Internet, and YouTube, I have learned to question what
one sees and hears.

Thank you,

Curt

Hello List:

A YouTube channel that I follow (Special Guest Star) has been posting
multiple videos of what appear to be recorded voice messages from UVB-76,
The Pip, The Squeaky Wheel and other known signals.

I kind of have my doubts about the authenticity of these recordings and
would like to hear the opinion of others who know much more about these
signals than I do.

Here is a link to the Special Guest Star channel:
