Yeah, I had a look around too. Apparently they are deliberately holding
on IMAP in order to push for their proprietary DeltaSync protocol.

But I remembered I have an old Hotmail account I no longer use. I
checked it -- yeah, it is still active. So I tried to set it up in
Seamonkey according to these instructions:

http://www.liveside.net/2009/03/13/pop3-technology-has-now-rolled-out-to-hotmail-customers-worldwide/

...but actually, I just followed the SM new-account wizard and filled in
the blanks. Turns out it download the messages with no problems using
the default POP3 port 110, with no encryption. (Although that might have
been my antivirus, Avast -- there's a gateway to live.com on port 995
that I don't remember setting up, so it might be that it auto-configures
these gateways for known services, so I might be using SSL on port 995
without knowing it.)

Manually changing the options for Connection Security SSL/TLS (port 995)
didn't seem to cause any problems. I also set up SMTP on port 587 (with
STARTTLS) and it worked fine, except for a message telling me to log on
and do a CAPTCHA -- which I wasn't able to find. Now I remember why I
never liked Hotmail...

i did get ae...@live.com to download mail once or twice into seamonkey,
but they want more frequent checkins to their webmail portal apparently...

You are a victim of bug #671085. See
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671085>.

Effectively, a user agent string in the form of
 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:7.0) Gecko/20110923
Firefox/7.0 SeaMonkey/2.4
is parsed by the addons.mozilla.org server as if your browser were
Firefox 2.4. As I recall, this problem was forecast when it was decided
to add the "advertise Firefox compatibility" feature to SeaMonkey, but
that forecast was pooh-poohed.

This is why I disabled "advertise Firefox compatibility". I use
PrefBar's User Agent capability when I need to spoof a browser other
than SeaMonkey.

i knew it... see i'm not losing my mind... even as much as i'd like to

In many ways, this hearkens back to my message of a day or
so ago, where I expressed my concerns that Seamonkey users
were beginning to lose their brand loyalty, almost certainly
as a result (direct or indirect) of Seamonkey's following
Firefox's rapid release schedule as well as its seeming
determination to follow Firefox's lead, regardless of whether
that lead is consistent with Seamonkey's heritage and the
expectations of its users.

Having just read Justin's message (above), it seems to me
that Seamonkey is indeed suffering as a result of those two
philosophies, and I would therefore like to offer, for
serious consideration, an alternative which I /think/ might
help to retain Seamonkey's existing user base, and perhaps
even enlarge it if Firefox users are similarly getting
pd off with the problems that seem automatically
to follow from the need to release on such a tight
time-scale.

I would like to propose that Seamonkey continue to make
use of Firefox and Gecko as its core components (I do
not know to what extent it also draws on Thunderbird),
but rather than slavishly following Firefox's 6-week
cycle, it adopts an altogether more leisurely approach.

What I propose is that Seamonkey aim at a 6-month release
cycle, using Firefox/Gecko from six months ago as its
basis. This will allow adequate time to identify bugs,
features that are counter-intuitive to Seamonkey users,
ill-advised design decisions, and so on.

This does not mean that later Firefoxes/Geckos will
necessarily be ignored; if, for example, they address
a bug in the version selected as the basis for the
next Seamonkey, then of course the bug fix can be
incorporated. But there should be no last-minute
(or last week, or perhaps even last month) changes :
there should be a good, stable Seamonkey in beta-test
for at least a month before it is released to Seamonkey
users in general.

Comments, please ?

HACKERS BREAK SSL ENCRYPTION USED BY MILLIONS OF SITES

Beware of BEAST decrypting secret PayPal cookies

By Dan Goodin in San Francisco
Posted in ID, 19th September 2011 21:10 GMT

Researchers have discovered a serious weakness in virtually all websites
protected by the secure sockets layer protocol that allows attackers to
silently decrypt data that's passing between a webserver and an end-user
browser.

The vulnerability resides in versions 1.0 and earlier of TLS, or
transport layer security, the successor to the secure sockets layer
technology that serves as the internet's foundation of trust. Although
versions 1.1 and 1.2 of TLS aren't susceptible, they remain almost
entirely unsupported in browsers and websites alike, making encrypted
transactions on PayPal, GMail, and just about every other website
vulnerable to eavesdropping by hackers who are able to control the
connection between the end user and the website he's visiting.

At the Ekoparty security conference in Buenos Aires later this week,
researchers Thai Duong and Juliano Rizzo plan to demonstrate
proof-of-concept code called BEAST, which is short for Browser Exploit
Against SSL/TLS. The stealthy piece of JavaScript works with a network
sniffer to decrypt encrypted cookies a targeted website uses to grant
access to restricted user accounts. The exploit works even against sites
that use HSTS, or HTTP Strict Transport Security, which prevents certain
pages from loading unless they're protected by SSL.

The demo will decrypt an authentication cookie used to access a PayPal
account, Duong said. Two days after this article was first published,
Google released a developer version of its Chrome browser designed to
thwart the attack.

Can you try "Compact" on the folders you are experiencing this issue in,
(right click on the folder in the folder-list, and select the "Compact"
entry)

The action of compacting can take a while depending on many factors,
size of the message database being one of them.

So even if SeaMonkey seems to freeze when you do that, allow it to
continue running, (I'd say, max 1 hour should be sufficient even on slow
computers)

After that, restart seamonkey (and even your computer) to get the memory
use flushed, for certain, and then try again, let us know if this helps
your situation.

if you'd read his message... you'd know he already tried compact...

No, it *does* store data, so you don't need, say your WinXP machine up and

retrieve/deduce the data from your sync account.

My unbuntu 8.04 on my old(ish) laptop computer has just upgraded the
Seamonkey to version 2.

It has changed the appearance of Seamonkey, to some silly looking
theme, that is listed as the "default theme".

It appears that software developers design software for their own
pleasure, and not for the users.

The "Classic" theme will not install.

The "Littlemonkey" theme has some silly looking phallic symbols to
the left of the toolbars.

Is is possible to get a traditional looking theme for Seamonkey 2.x,
so that we can have a decent appearance for Seamonkey, like the
themes from Seamonkey 1 or Netscape?

I've just ported the SM1.x Modern Mozillium theme to SM2.2+. It is
available on my server, https://www.projectit.com/ .

Additionally, I still plan to port the other SeaMonkey themes like
(Race Day and Venerable Modern) as time permits.

I've just ported the SM1.x Venerable Modern theme to SM2.2+. It is
available on my server, https://www.projectit.com/ when visiting the
site using SeaMonkey 2.2x.

Venerable Modern was one of the original themes for the Mozilla Suite
making its debut at version M18. In many ways, it is one of the most
beautiful themes with its darker violet hues and toolbar buttons. As an
added bonus, incorporated in this theme is a derivative skin named,
Venerable Chrome Modern authored by storm119. The best way of explaining
it is that it is a hybrid of Modern Mozillium and Venerable Modern. To
enable it, click the Subskin link for instructions.

Additionally, I still plan to port the other SeaMonkey themes like (Race
Day and, hopefully, Toy Factory and Sky Pilot Classic) as time permits.

Lastly, I've also updated the Modern Mozillium theme and fixed a number
styling errors or previously unstyled elements.

know what to do. I like the version I am using. I am using Windows 7

Just wondering how others using Win 7 have managed with the new update.

my two cents:

SeaMonkey 2.1 and 2.2 have been virtually flawless...there may have been
a few niggling details which irked me personally... but none rose to the
level of making me decide to remain in the insecure 2.0.x series...

i keep backups of my address books and my bookmarks... but haven't had
any need to import them since jumping to 2.1...

one of the things folks in this group need to realize is, change in
inevitable... progress moves forward... no e'mail program in the 2010's
can afford to remain static... lest it whither away with the dying off
of its intransigent user base...

given how few people actually send e'mail anymore outside of their cell
phones, we are lucky to still have an independent e'mail/browser combo
that remains in development based the gecko/mozilla...

personally i've found the tabs in the e'mail section quite useful... but

So I came here and started reading about all the problems that people
are having with SM 2.2 and the scary prospect of going back to 2.0.14 if
I wasn't happy. And I've decided to stick with 2.0.14 for the time
being. My question: are there ever going to be security updates for the
2.0.x version? Or will I have to go to 2.2 or 2.3 no matter what just to
keep a reasonable security level? Or, worse, will I have to discard SM
altogether and go to (ugh) Chrome (which I already must use for such
demanding sites as HBO To Go since that site doesn't even work with IE
Tab)?

I've been a loyal Mozilla person since Netscape 1; but is this where I

No, I haven't yet updated to SM 2.2. I've got too many other tasks to

It took too long to get all my necessary extensions from SM 2.0.14
working with SM 2.1 and to set preferences that changed to go through
that bother again right now.

fwiw, all of my extensions carried over and worked just fine between 21.

I'm using SM 2.0.14 .
For this account according to the account settings:
- I am connecting to pop.att.yahoo.net:995 .
- The outgoing server (SMTP) is
urj...@bellsouth.net - smtp.att.y...
(I'm guessing that's smtp.att.yahoo.net . But the
box for entering the entry doesn't scroll. So I can
not verify the name)
- Connection security is SSL/TLS
and the check box for 'Use secure authentication' is unchecked

[By the way, the account editing window can not be re-sized.
For server settings, it is too narrow so that the boxes
for 'advanced' and 'browse' are truncated on the right.
Has the window been made re-sizable now for 2.1+ ]

Recently my system has begun to issue the following error
when I try to send out emails on this account:
"Sending of message failed. An error occurred sending mail:
Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com.
It does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have
chosen to use authentication. Uncheck 'use name and password'
for that server or contact your server provider"

NOTE: This is not a hard error. If I wait a minute or two
and retry sending the message, it is sent out successfully.

So who's to blame? AND how do I get rid of this annoyance?

Occurs irregularly here as well. Settings correct, per their own
instructions. Persistence in clicking Send has worked for me, thus far.
Wouldn't dream of contacting ATT/Yahoo. :P

its a problem with servers being busy at AT&T's end of the pipe...
beginning to happen again with aim/aol/netscape servers too...

Installing the "Extension Compatability Reporter"

actually try hard to keep all the extensions enabled, but you also have
the issue that any actual application changes can still cause extensions
to break/break-the-app. But it lets you override this stuff without
needing to manually change any files.

goint to the addon's page with:

Try using the Seamonkey download page instead of the Firefox one:

thx... used to be all mozilla addons or themes all were in one place and
the page wold indicate whether said addon or theme was available for

tagzilla is the addon you are looking for...

jslib needs to be installed first... then tagzilla

I call those "Web pages constructed by idiots"
but you're a more kind and gentle soul than I am.

Extension compatibility is an entirely different subject.

I'm a one-step-at-a-time kind of guy.
The OP *could* have **downloaded** the XPI
(I'm ASSuMEing; I didn't go to the page[1])
then **installed** the extension from his own HDD.

At that point the website is out of the picture
and the failure mode becomes more obvious.
I recommed this technique for those having problems.
DO right-click and **download** when the option is available.

.

available
and was instead buried behind scripting,
THAT would be the kind of thing that gives me a rash.

i have lots of lotion for the rash...

don't see anyplace to download the .xpi

For extensions (XPI files), see my reply earlier today in this newsgroup
under the subject "Can't download to install SM2.0 extensions on a
clean/new installed SM2.1?" Note that this will not always work because
some XPI files resist editing.

I believe the compatibility of plugins (DLL files) rests primarily with
the version of your operating system and only slightly with the version
of your browser. I would be surprised if many plugins even check the
version of your browser. However, they often do check the brand (e.g.,
IE, Chome, Firefox, SeaMonkey).

The difference arises from the fact that Add-ons Manager -- a component
of Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, etc -- handles the installation of
extensions while your operating system handles the installation of
plugins.

i'm working primarily in linux these days, as my laptop is resisting any
reclamation of its WinXP MCE partition...

again, pointers are very much appreciated...

The version numbers of SeaMonkey
are at least one integer behind Firefox.
If an extension checks for a version number upon installation,
first, you better assure that the version numbers line up.

i'm new to user agent sniff/spoofing ... when i click to dowload the
plugin from fbpurity.com site, the addon popup tells me it isn't
compatible with seamonkey 2.1 ... so which about config file do i need
to change... ? or is this not the intent of advertising firefox
compatibility?

recent "old laptop triage" events have knocked my computer semi-pro

What is not working? I've diabled Advertise Firefox compatibility. I
