Yeah I did that for now. But the wait cursor has a legitimate purpose to
show a page is still loading so that functionality is now gone. But at
least the visible annoyance is gone while reading my newsgroups. I
eagerly await the bug fix.

Kent, nine times (or more) out of ten, if the screen is not showing the
web page you are expecting, it's because SM is still downloading stuff.
This activity should also show in the bottom line of the screen!

So, you can either put up with the cursor being wrong when you have it
in the wrong part of the screen when your not downloading stuff or you
can have the cursor wrong when you are downloading stuff and have to
look at the bottom line to check for activity!!

Me? I don't care, one way or the other!

I'm back to Seamonkey 2.7.2 and everything is fine again, no more
distracting wait-icon-cursors in the newsgroups.

I had a animated (ani)tumbling hourglass as wait-icon-cursor, that was

it. At least I now had a pointing arrow back, that was more usable, but

Yes - I check here daily...don't recall it being mentioned. I don't see
the wait cursor issue with my Macs.

But the issue of SM not fronting the Space in which is open is a new to
observation for SM 2.8, to me. I suspect the two are related. If
there's a workaround (other than additional clicking by the user) I'd

Well, isn't that a bit overreacting? You're jeopardizing your security
for something as simple as a busy cursor. Let's compare:

a) 2.7.x: exposed to 8 security issues only fixed in SM 2.8:
https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/seamonkey.html

b) 2.8: busy cursor (wallpaper fix: toggle ui.use_activity_cursor in

If there is anything a user can definitely workaround it's security,
IMO. If a user is savvy and knows what and what not to do to stay safe,
then yeah - going back to 2.7.2 to avoid a really annoying interface bug
(or two, in my Mac case) is just as viable a workaround as telling
someone to get over it for the sake of security. My PPC machines are
stuck with SM 2.0.14 now, and I'm not sweating that.

In the end it's up to the user to know their own risks, and to make
their own decisions. I've gone back to 2.7.2 myself...when the OS X
interface bugs that are annoying me are fixed (the Minimize and Spaces
ones, I'm not seeing the wait cursor issue), I'll move up.

Jens, come on, SM 2.7.2 is not that old and 2.8 repaires some
vulnerability's. There are threats in the waiting we still don't know
yet. But they sure will be repaired when they are discovered :-)

But I absolutely agree, security has or should always have priority.
But I don't agree as you state something as simply as a busy cursor

I read a lot of newsgroups. I found it irritating and distracting.
So I decided to revert back to SM 2.7.2

I did not know about this setting: ui.use_activity_cursor.

I will set it to false and see what it does.

Thanks for pointing me to this one.

In SM 2.7.2 I have in about:config set 'ui.use_activity_cursor' to false

After that I upgraded to SM 2.8 and no busy wait cursor in the
newsgroups anymore. So thanks for this workaround.

This solution was posted before in:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=727414

But that appeared today, before I uninstalled SM 2.8 yesterday night.
So I did not know this solution. Don't visit bugzilla every day

It's very annoying. I use an animated rotating hourglas as wait icon

I have placed a stop button on the Email Window Bar (via customize).
When I click the stop button the wait-cursor disappears but when I click
a new thread/message the wait-cursor is there again. It's very tiring.
Sometimes the stop button is greyed out.

I also have a Seamonkey Portable 2.7.2 and this version does not show

In Fedora you can set your font´s contrast as in RedHat

I am having the same problem since I upgraded to SM 2.8 from Sm 2.7.2
and it is very annoying. I am using Win XP PRO and have never changed
any fonts. The problem at times does not start at the onset of reading
the messages I have in the newsgroup but all at once will start and then
it is present in all mail not just the newsgroup. I have to shut down
the composer and then restart it for it to go away but then it is back
in due time.

Thanks for pointing to this bug.

Bug 727414 - Get busy cursor in thread and folderpane while reading news

I use Seamonkey as my primary newsreader, but with version 2.8 this
irritating behaviour makes it useless and unworkable as a newsreader.

So I may go back to SM 2.7.2 if there is no fix available.
