Mozilla Forum Etiquette violation warning (Was: Re: WiFi Internet Connection and seaMonkey)

Hi DoctorBill,

Your posting address does not appear to be valid, so this warning is
being posted here.

You're getting this message because I've noticed that you've been
posting a lot of off-topic messages lately. I want to make sure that
you're aware that the mozilla.support.* newsgroups are subject to the
Mozilla Forum Etiquette rules
. "Stay on topic"
is one of those basic rules. As a matter of fact, off-topic posts are
eligible for removal from the news server. See
. Your
off-topic messages aren't being removed; I just want to let you know
about the forum rules.

If it would help you to see which posts I considered off-topic, please
just e-mail me back.

It's important to remember that the reason people subscribe to the
Mozilla Support newsgroups or mailing lists is for user support; and if
they have to read through many messages that are of no help in their use
of the product, they're not getting what they subscribed for.

If you do want to post an off-topic message, there a few things you can do:
* You can reply to the poster via private email
* You can suggest taking the discussion to a place where the discussion
would not be off-topic.
* You can force replies to be sent to the mozilla.general, where
off-topic discussion is allowed. To do that, just set the Followup-To
header on your post. [Demonstration video:
]

If you'd like to reply to this message, please email me with a valid
return address, thanks.

ISSUE RESOLVED !

I went to Hewlett Packard and got onto a FORUM there.
Got into a sub-forum and asked the question about the WiFi not
connecting with the Internet.

Finally someone answered and posted a link to Atheros Drivers (don't
know where he got it from).
Here is the Forum and my Thread:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Wireless-and-Networking/HpG60-200-VISTA-Cannot-connect-WiFi-to-Internet/m-p/6128229#M135222

On the first reply I was given this link to drivers:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54972.exe

I downloaded that driver (sp54972.exe) and ran it and then went into
the Atheros Adapter "Properties" and UPDATED the driver - and
directed

it to "search the computer".

THAT did it ! Now the Atheros Adapter works.
Apparently -before - it found the Router and recognized it w/o it's
name (?).
Once the right driver was installed it found the router AND it's name
and THAT allowed it to
access the internet. God Help me if I know what I am talking about !

I had googled this problem quite a lot and there are MANY people
having this problem - MANY ! No answers had worked - I tried a lot
of them !
Lucky that this fellow (Paul Tikkanen) knew of what he spoke !

I wish I could disperse this information to all those who are STILL
fighting their WiFi Adapter. I don't know how ! Besides - It just
works for Atheros Adapters.

DoctorBill

Yes, Atheros adapters can be a bit of a pain if you want to find new
drivers. However there are a few web sites specialized on offering
Atheros drivers.

You do realize that Windows Vista is en-of-life since about one month?
No updates of any kind from Microsoft, including security patches. You
might consider updating to Windows 10.

I bought a Complete Windows 7 disk from e-bay for $30.

I am considering wiping the Laptop's HD clean (Format) and installing
Windows 7.
Disk comes with the License Key Code. Kind of scared to do it,
though

DoctorBill

If it were me I would buy a new hdd or ssd for 7 and put the Vista drive
away somewhere.
You will need to determine if your machine is ide or sata first though.

Yes - I looked into that - some place (Recycle Techs) had a Solid State
500 GB used HD for $125 ! Passed on it.
They didn't have anything below 0ne Terra-byte ! $90 !

OMG ! One Terra-byte ! $90 ! I remember buying 450 MB Hard Drives
for $150 ! Things are getting so amazing !
Over at the College where I teach Chemistry part time, the hall benches
are lined with students texting and surfing the Internet like so many
vending
machines in a row. Even my wife is looking at her cell phone for
hours on end !

Anyway - Yes - maybe I should do as you say.
Device Manager says:
Toshiba MK2552GSX ATA Device...SATA I presume.

No, that is not SATA. SATA means serial ATA, this is a very old drive
with an ATA connector, also known as PATA or IDE.

This used computer's warrante expired in 2010 according to Hp.
Hell - it is difficult to find any IDE HD's anymore ! Old Technology
now !

Thanks.

I can get the EXACT same HD from Amazon for $42 free shipping !

will do a primary format (partition) on a new unformatted HD.

Save your new wifi drivers in a safe place ..before... :-)

Oh Ya ! I will get my ducks all in a row before I do any Formatting !

Think I will wait to see if I have any problems with VISTA first.
I don't do much on my compuker anyway.VISTA is 'probably' OK for me.
I just hear a lot of people badmouthing it.so expecting problems.

Bugs me that all my favorite stuff from XP won't work on higher versions of
Windows. Win 7 has a Virtual PC thing that works half-*ssed.

Tried it on VISTA (big mistake) and got into trouble. A game
(Trespasser) permanently
set my screen to 320x640 pixels and I could not get to anything on the
lower

right side to fix it !
Screen always snapped back to upper left side in 320 pixels.
Safe Mode wouldn't 'take' - after fixing it - it reverted. Bugger !
Finally got it - but it was a REAL bugger !

On the first reply I was given this link to drivers:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54972.exe

I downloaded that driver (sp54972.exe) and ran it and then went into
the Atheros Adapter "Properties" and UPDATED the driver - and directed
it to "search the computer".

Kind of scared to do it,
though

When I went from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, I noticed how much snappier
Windows 8.1 was. That hasn't changed with Windows 10. Windows 10 is
(according to MS) the last Windows version, there will not be something
like Windows 11. MS will keep updating Windows 10, and we just had the
third (??) mayor upgrade.

So my advise is, migrate to Windows 10 if you are on an older Windows
version.

Try this

The wifi radio sees the router just fine.
Therefore the problem is likely due to a setting either in the laptop or the
router
and not a hardware problem.
Have you checked Device Manager to see if it could be a driver problem?

My router (NetGear 600) setup "Wizard" asks if I need a password to
get on my ISP.
I chose "No" - however my E-Mail does need a password.

What is this Internet IP Address thing ? How would I get it ?
NetGear's wizard has - "use Static Address (number given) or Dynamic.
Chose dynamic. ???

Anyway...I went back to the NetGear wizard and had it set up what is
needed and tested it.
It says I have an internet connectionobviously - I am using it now
on my Desktop WIRED to
the router.

Now to go back and try the Hp G60 Laptop's WiFi

There are so many possibilities of wifi things not being set right...
No ip address - set your router to auto dhcp or dynamic.
wrong security type - use wpa2
firewall exclusion - turn off the computer fire wall for a few min to

etc.

When I try to set up a WiFi connection on the Laptop, VISTA says I am

However, when I start up SeaMonkey, it won't connect to the Internet.
I had set up and used SM - with the cable connected directly to the

Here is a real kicker !
I bought a Roswell USB (thumbdrive sized) WiFi Adapter and loaded it onto
this %@&$#& Laptop and THAT works !
I can immediately get onto the Internet via my Router with the Roswell
WiFi !

Can this Atheros WiFi [embedded in Laptop's Back (screwed in plate)] be too
old or outdated junk ?

This was a Laptop I bought at Goodwill for $30 - it works well - looks new !
Was a used business Computer. Wonder if the bad WiFi prompted it's
demise

Totally stumped ! I give up !

There are so many possibilities of wifi things not being set right...
No ip address - set your router to auto dhcp or dynamic.
wrong security type - use wpa2
firewall exclusion - turn off the computer fire wall for a few min to
test.
etc.

Try this
Enter http:\\216.58.209.110 into SeaMonkey

Wifi, ISP and mail account are 3 different things.
My pc is connected to my wifi network with a strong password.
This wifi-material is a modem-routeur which is connected thru the
telephone line to my ISP with and ID and a Password.

When all is ok, I can access my mailbox with an ID and a Password.
The 3 passwords are differents.
If your pc is connected strongly with the modeme thru wifi, it could be
without password (This depends of your wifi options in your modem-router)
If that is ok, and You cannot use SM to access Google, par exemple, this
is because your modem "is not connected to the internet" the causes can
be that you have not specified the ID/PW for the connection to your ISP.
Another possibility could be that the internet-access at your isp is
down at your isp server.

So the best way of solving your problem should be a phone call to your isp.

It says I have an internet connectionobviously - I am using it now
on my Desktop WIRED to

the router.

Now to go back and try the Hp G60 Laptop's WiFi

I tried the NETWORK ADDRESS number but had no effect. It was set to
'Not Present'.

The Atheros WiFi Adapter Driver is up to date - 4/27/2008.

On the "Network and Sharing Center" my Router is "unidentified network".
 (?)
How does one give it a Name ? Don't know what I'd call it.Sasquatch
? Yeti ?

I suspect that I need my ISP to solve this problem.

I had set up and used SM - with the cable connected directly to the

I have NEVER used WiFi and don't know squat about it. Especially the

To narrow it down I would try other programs besides SM.
Your laptop probably has 20-100 programs that connect to the internet.
Try several of those and let us know the results.

OK.
I tried Internet Explorer. It was set to work offline. I set it to
Online. No connection.

Went to Internet Options | Connections | Set Up Internet Connection.
Had two WAN Miniport Connections - went to Creat New Connection.
Clicked "Wireless"

My 2.4 GHz connection came up says connected.
BUT - SM nor IE will connect.
Opened Network and Sharing Center i says I am connected to Router.
Pictorial hasMy Computer ---line---Unidentified Network
X-Internet

"View Full Map" > says I have an Incompatible Router !

At this point I am stumped.
I can get the Internet when wired (ethernet cable) to the Router (what I
am doing NOW),

but my Laptop won't connect via WiFi even when receiving strong signal.

Looked into connection Atheros AR5007WiFi adapter...says working properly.
Driver up to date- visited their website. I got to "Network Connection
Details" - gibberish to me.

I tried connecting via something on Internet Options and Got this:
Error 815: Blah blahmaybe bad "Service Name" lost at
this point.

Does any of this make sense ?

Eventually I may go PAY to have someone finger this out, but for now
TRYING to do it myself.
