Re: New standard keyboard coming to Narrator
I bet this is going to put the big hurt to JAWS! Last year I did the Migration to JAWS and even paid for the 2 upgrades. Big mistake on my partv, probably didn't give it more than 5 hours trying to learn it. Went to NVDA, and Narrator at times. Finally removed Window Eyes a few weeks ago, it was becoming useless in Windows ten. This new keyboard layout using Narrator sounds real promising. ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. New standard keyboard coming to Narrator
Welcome to your new Narrator keyboard layout (June 2018) The Narrator team is pleased to announce some major changes to the way that you interact with Narrator. We wanted to make it easier for you to learn and use Narrator, so we’re building on the knowledge you may have acquired using other screen readers. In this release, we’re introducing the new Standard keyboard layout for Narrator. We’re bringing these changes to Insider builds, and we want your feedback. Here are some highlights: Narrator now lets you use either the Caps lock or Insert keys as your Narrator modifier key. So, from now on, we’ll refer to these modifier keys as the Narrator key. The Change View commands have been updated. Change View commands are now mapped to the Narrator key + Page up and Page down keys. You can also use Change View by pressing Narrator key + Control + Up arrow and Down arrow. Move Next and Move Previous haven’t changed. Scan Mode’s Primary and Secondary Action commands have changed. Primary Action can be executed by pressing Enter or Spacebar. You can complete Secondary Action by simply adding a Shift key to each of those keys (Shift + Enter or Shift + Spacebar). You’ll see this change regardless of the keyboard layout you select. Narrator’s page, paragraph, line, word and character commands have been changed in our new Standard keyboard layout. In addition, many of Narrator’s commands have been moved to be more mnemonic. Some have also been moved to align to keystrokes that are more familiar to screen reader users. You can now use the numeric keypad to issue Narrator commands. We’ll talk more about this later. We’ve added a few new commands for Narrator, including List of Links, List of Headings, List of Landmarks and Narrator Find. Several new Scan Mode keyboard commands have been added to allow you to select text. Several of Narrator’s keyboard commands for moving to Links, Headings, and Tables have been deprecated from the Standard keyboard layout. These commands are still available in Scan Mode and Change View. We’ve also deprecated the ”Move to last item in containing area” command. To keep your keyboard layout the same, go to Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator, and choose the Legacy layout. This will revert Narrator to the experience that shipped in the Windows April 2018 release. Please note that new Narrator commands in this release will not be available in the Legacy keyboard layout if keystrokes for legacy commands conflict with those used in our new Narrator features. Keep reading to learn more about these changes The upgrade experience When you upgrade to this version of Windows and turn on Narrator, a dialog will pop up that gives you some information about the changes we’ve made to the Narrator keyboard. Check the box next to “Do not show this again” if you don’t want to see it again. The Narrator key In this release, we’ve made some changes to the Narrator modifier key. We’ll refer to it as the Narrator key throughout Narrator settings and in documentation going forward. By default, the Caps lock and Insert keys will be available as your Narrator key. If you’re using a 106 Japanese keyboard, then the NonConvert and Insert keys can be used as your Narrator key. This is a change from prior releases where the Control and Alt keys were used as Narrator’s modifier keys. Narrator settings changes We’ve added a new heading in Narrator settings called “Choose keyboard settings.” You can get to it in Scan Mode by using the H key to move to the heading. You’ll find these settings there: Select keyboard layout This setting allows you to select your Narrator keyboard layout. By default, the Standard keyboard layout is selected. If you want to return to the keyboard layout from the April 2018 release, select the Legacy layout. Note: You can select the “Learn about the different Narrator keyboard layouts” link to learn more about the changes to the Narrator keyboard. In the Windows Insider build you are testing this link will send you to the current public-facing Narrator user guide. The documentation you’re reading now will be merged into the Narrator user guide when we ship the final release later this year. Select Narrator modifier key This setting allows you to determine the keys used as Narrator’s modifier key. The following options are available: Caps lock and Insert (the default setting) Insert Caps lock If you’re using a 106 Japanese keyboard, the settings will be: NonConvert and Insert (the default setting) Convert Insert NonConvert Note: If you choose the Legacy keyboard layout, this setting won’t be available. The Caps lock key will be available and the Ctrl + Alt Narrator key modifier will be used for Japanese keyboard users when in the Legacy keyboard layout. The Standard keyboard layout The next few sections tell you more about how Narrator’s new Standard keyboard layout differs from the previous keyboard layout (now
screen reader compatibility
I copied this from another list.Hi everyone, Below is an update on screen reader compatibility notice and a schedule of events regarding Version 1803: A few weeks ago I sent out a preliminary notice regarding compatible screen readers with Windows 10 Version 1803. The below notice replaces the preliminary one and should be considered official compatibility notice from this forum cluster: Windows 10 Version 1803 compatible screen readers: any screen reader supporting Version 1703 or later will work, although you may need to install releases optimized for 1803. The following are known compatible screen readers: • Narrator : yes. • NonVisual Desktop Access: 2018.1.1 or later. • JAWS for Windows: 18.0.4350 or later, 2018.1802.78 or later. • ZoomText: 11.5 or later. • Any screen reader declaring support for Version 1703 (Creators Update) or later (except Window-Eyes). Note: Window-Eyes is no longer supported as a compatible screen reader from this forum cluster as the product was discontinued. Also, based on latest information available, the tentative schedule of events regarding Version 1803 (on this forum cluster) is as follows: • Around April 3, 2018 or whenever it happens: Version 1803 build will be sent to release preview Insiders. From that day on, the entire forum cluster will enter Version 1803 era. • Around April 10, 2018: Version 1803 makes public debut. • April 11, 2018 or at most 24 hours after public release: critical standby begins. This is a 72-hour period where all activity on the Win10 forum will be suspended except for Version 1803 upgrade reports and impressions. This is also the period when Microsoft staff and screen reader vendor reps will get temporary moderator privileges so they can pass on critical information for screen reader users (please show them respect during that time). • Between 1803 release date and 60 days after: countdown for Version 1709 is in effect. During this time cumulative update notices for both 1709 and 1803 will be sent to the forum cluster. • June 30, 2018 or end of 60 day countdown, whichever happens earlier: cumulative update announcements for 1709 will cease. The next KB alert for 1709 will be on April 2019 once it exits consumer support. • December 2018: cumulative update for 1803 will cease. • October 2019: last KB alert for 1803 as it exits consumer support. The above schedule is subject to change – depends on when Version 1803 will hit the air. Cheers, Joseph _._,_._,_ Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group. Re: New frustrations with TB, please help
I don't know anything about your filtering problem, but you may give control W a try to close TB. Therefore, I have to use the task manager to shut down TB. Could it be that TB has been updated since I've been away, and now presenting me with these new issues? I removed FX 56.x and installed FX 52.4 and still no navigational keys using either screen reader. NVDA works fine though. Before update Jaws to 2018, I need to know why I lost navigational keys using wineyes and jaws. Any help would be appreciated. ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. BJ, Thanks anyhow. I think it's time to learn Jaws. I'd tell you how to stop FX from updating, but it's different than in latest version. Okay, it sounds as if my assumption was incorrect. When I heard Window eyes was closing down I asked for a copy of the latest version and was sent a link for my copy to download. I have been complaining for several seasons that it is not fair that I have to pay 100 bucks the audio pass only cost 40 colors are year until the and FL got really. greedy. A lot could be done to improve its usability. Sadly, in recent times, the opposite is true. In many instances I find the JAWS curser as a means of reading a screen just about useless. Instead, I now invoke the touch curser which I find will get me to information not available to either the PC curser or the JAWS curser. To enable the touch curser, hold down the shift key and press the numpad plus key. You can then move up and down through the information using the left and right arrow keys, or if you prefer, by using the numpad keys four and six. To leave the touch curser mode, simply press the numpad plus key twice quickly. Hope this helps all you new JAWS users. Re: W-e to Jaws tutorials annoying numbers
How do I go about downloading these MP3 files? meaning the URL. Thank you. On 5/17/2017 10:42 AM, Raul A. Gallegos via Talk wrote: Hi, this is normal because of the file playing through the web browser. My guess is that if you download the file to your computer and play it with Media Player or some other program, the behavior will be different. So, instead of pressing Enter on the file, press Shift-F10 or the Applications key to bring up the context menu and choose save. Hopefully that will help. Good luck. -- Raul A. I either have to keep hitting cntrl every few seconds or change focus to the desktop. Any setting I can change so I don't keep hearing this annoying string of numbers while listening? It isn't a terribly big deal now, but it may be as I expand my horizons to listen to other things on the internet. thanks for any help.
