If you are using Vocalizer or SAPI speech, you can adjust volume of the
speech.

To do this, press Insert-j for the JAWS window. In the options menu, select
Voices. Under that, select Voice Adjustment. You’ll be asked to select a
default voice profile. Once you select Sapi or Vocalizer profile, you will

For whatever stupid reason, people like me who bought the we based zoomtext
fusion got no discount at all on uprading. Despite the fact i'm in the same
boat as just we users. I'm not even saying we should gotten free upgrades.
Sorry y'all but this makes me angry. I would've thought about going to the
jaws based version of fusion if they would've been like ok, instead of $200
for upgrade and $200 for the sma. We'll give y'all a break and do $75
upgrade and $100 for sma. Hell, even if they would've given we fusion users
blindness convention pricing without having to go to the conventions. I
might have done that but no. I will be using my we version of zt fusion,
slowly learn nvda better and wait to see if google puts out a new
chromebook pixel and buy that or another chromebook.

Yeah and you know what is ironic about all of this? When Magic 12 came out,
Freedom Scientific issued a competitive upgrade plan so that people with

Tom, hopefully I'm not being overtly patronizing especially now that
Window-Eyes is dead!! That aside, Window-Eyes is an impressive

Maybe--just maybe--someday, someone will UNSCRAMBLE the Window-Eyes

Should that happen, it's glorious days migh yet return again!

Re: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-08-20 Thread David via Talk
Olusegun, and all other "dreamers".
First of all, let me second much of what Tom already have told you.

Window-Eyes, as well as a number of other software you have come to rely
on through the years, have been developed to run on Windows machines.
Windows machines have their way, or ways, to do things. An Android,
Linux, IOS, or whatever other OS you might fancy, they all will do
things their own ways.

To hope for a Windows Screen Reader to be ported into Android, just
because you need thing on the screen read out to you, would be a
daydream deemed to never happen. The car you use every day, is
manufactured for running on the roads. it can run on any road, but it
has to be in contact with the underlaying surface, that is the pavement
of the road. The airplane you travelled by, last month when going for
your vacation, is designed to run in the air. The ship that brought your
new cellphone in from Asia, well it is designed to float on water. When
did you travel by airplane or ship, going down the highway outside your
door? They are all made to fill a given purpose, in a given environment.

True, some enventive persons have attempted to make a "one-for-all"
transportation facility; which could take you on land, in the air, and
cross the sea. But why have we never got one of them in our yard?
Because they are neither practical, nor functional. Because they are
even worse than all the hazzle of today's changing from one means of
transportation to the other.

The few times we see things that are told to be cross-platformed in the
electronic world, it only works this well. And certain features simply
won't be portable, due to the whole layout and construction of the
underlaying OS. A Windows program, for instance, will never run under
old DOS, due to the fact that Windows has a graphical interface, DOS did
not.

Olusegun, you said you don't have programming skills. I could almost
tell, due to your dreams. Let me then take a couple of your minutes, to
introduce you to but a few of the rooms in the maze-like programming hotel.

A program code, is much like a recipe. It holds a number of lines, each
giving an instruction for the computer to carry out a certain task. This
code has to be readable for humans, or you would have some kind of a
time in trouble-shooting it. That is why, most programmers make use of
what is known as a programming language. These are kind of
interpretters, between you as a human, and the 0's and 1's of the
computer's inside.

You might have heard someone speak German, another time you heard a
person speak Greek. None of them were comprehendable to you, unless you
happen to speak their actual language. They even differ rather, from the
English language. So does Spanish and French.Likewise inside the
programming world. One programming language is rather different from
another. And sometimes you can instruct one language to perform one
task, and the same cannot be performed in the other programming environment.

To give you one example of such differences, which I ran into recently,
in the attempt to import some of my code from one programming language
(VBS) into another environment (AutoHotKey, or AHK).
In VBS, we have an instruction named EVal, which will calculate a
mathematical expression. You could for instance say:
 EVal( 2 +3 *4)
When running this code, it will perform the following activity, inside
the computer:
 Add 2 plus 3; gives us 5.
Multiply the 5, with 4; and we get the result of 20.

Now, what happens if we ask Autohotkey to perform the same calculation?
That is, it does not even have a single instruction for a calculation,
but with some triggering we may be able to have it calculate. Problem
is, that Autohotkey calculates from right to left, and our expression:
 2 +3 *4
will be handled as follows:
Take 4, multiply with 3; and you get 12.
Take the 12, and add 2; and the final result goes into 14.
Really, if the rest of our code now has to rely on the result of this
simple calculation, you who are a business person, soon can see the
tremendous difference we would come out with. Or, would you think that
it doesn't matter if we get 14, or 20, as our end result?

OK, this was - believe me - a VERY TINY and insignificant example of
what happens when we attempt to port one single line of coding, from one
environment to another. And yes, it is all on a Windows machine. What
issues we could have run into when trying to run similar pieces of code
on other platforms, I will let everyone's imagination come up with.

I have been a programmer for some three decades, have learned a couple
of languages, and am currently in the process of investigating a bit on
further alternatives for my projects. Even so, I see that you cannot
perform everything in one environment, but often are much better off, in
letting each environment do what it is best at. Yet i can assure
everyone, that such a thing as simply taking

Exactly and it's because of that that Window-Eyes is now destroyed. So FS
would say, you can only buy JAWS. You can't use any competing products. You
can't do this in other products. You can only do this in JAWS. You can't do
this, you can't do that, etc. If you push our products, we'll give you
kickbacks. We'll give you a discount if you not only push our products but
also if you script for us. Here's your money, now, sign the contract. So the

Hi Tom!

VFO shouldn't have said they would creat the Window-Eyes keyboard if they
didn't want to do it. That's pretty poor of them.

When I upgraded to OpenBook 9 in 2012 when I first upgraded to Windows 7, I
was snooping in the OpenBook menus and noticed some kind of JAWS runtime. I
didn't know why that was there.

Butch,
Actually, VFO initially promised Doug they would create a Window-Eyes

And yes, their number one priority since day one has been governmental and
charitable money money money.
I nailed them many years ago for telling the Massachusetts Commission for
the Blind that Open Book, a self-voicing program, required JAWS. Needless
to say the head of technology was absolutely livid when he considered how
many JAWS licenses they paid for to give Window-Eyes users Open Book.

RE: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-08-20 Thread Dennis Long via Talk
I had asked about a keyboard layout and was told they would have to make
sure it didn't conflict with other programs like fusion.
That was why they didn't do that WE keyboard layout.

Butch,
Actually, VFO initially promised Doug they would create a Window-Eyes
keyboard layout and then they reneged on that promise, which is typical and
says a lot about who they are.
And yes, their number one priority since day one has been governmental and
charitable money money money.
I nailed them many years ago for telling the Massachusetts Commission for
the Blind that Open Book, a self-voicing program, required JAWS.
Needless to say the head of technology was absolutely livid when he
considered how many JAWS licenses they paid for to give Window-Eyes users
Open Book.

Tom

Re: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-08-20 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Olusegun,
In reference to your previous message, no one has cracked JAWS. They're
cracking the authorization code scheme. They're not getting access to
one line of code for the program.
Regarding Office for Android and iOS? Those programs were not ported.
The definition of porting a program is to move it from one platform to
another platform. For lack of a better term, full blown operating
systems and mobile operating systems are very different platforms.
Porting a Windows program to Mac or vice versa is one thing, but porting
a Windows program to any mobile OS isn't going to happen. Slimmed down
versions of Office were written specifically for Android and iOS. Having
the code is of course of enormous help, but virtually everything works
differently on each platform.
Microsoft has tried to do this in the Visual Studio development
environment, i.e. supposedly having the ability to write cross-platform
mobile apps for Windows mobile, Android, and iOS, and then be able to
test run them on virtual machines. But everyone in the programming world
agrees that it's a poor substitute to say the least as it will often
miss bugs that show up on a real Android or iOS device. And note that
cross platform development is either for full blown operating systems or
mobile operating systems. There is no do it all in one fell swoop
option. Of course Windows mobile apps are fine because they're being
written on their native platform.
There is also platform independent ways of developing programs, which
always cause accessibility problems. But these are for Windows, Mac, and
Linux, not mobile operating systems. Well, they probably do exist but
don't work. I've seen the discussion a thousand times and the answer is
always if you want to develop iOS apps do it on a Mac with their iOS
developer, develop Windows apps on Windows, and if you want to develop
Android apps it's considerably more complicated because there is no
parent OS for Android. This is why new mobile apps are almost always
written for iOS first and slow to emerge on Android. And if that's not
enough, the open source nature of Android makes it more difficult to
develop for because virtually every company who uses it feels compelled
to fiddle with the core operating system, just enough to make it harder
for developers, i.e. an Android app that works fine on a Google device
may or may not work just right on any other Android device.
So full blown operating systems and mobile operating systems are two
different species.

Tom

When it comes to CRACKING THE CODE, that doesn't have to come from V F O or
whatever name it calls itself! Jaws code is CRACKED all the time and many
folks, whether you believe it or not, are using the silly screen reader at
NO EXTRA cost! Window-Eyes, because of its licensing scheme, was FAR TOO
DIFFICULT to crack. Now that it's dead, I remain hopeful that, at some
point in time, someone will CRACK IT, play with it, and ROLL it out for all.
I just hope that whoever succeeds in doing that will do the rolling out on
the Android platform using AOSP and thus avoid V F O's belly ache.

Mind you, I'm not saying it will happen; I am merely trying to be somewhat
hopeful! I may win or lose; whichever way it goes, by the time my
hypothesis comes to play, I probably won't know much about Windows
computers/screen readers anymore; hence the SELFISH reason, if you wish to
call it that, why I want to see Window-Eyes as a viable screen reader on the
Android platform. I shall have recommended iOS, but that won't happen over
there; the best chance and opportunity is on Android!

home with a thousand rooms and that home has a thousand doors on its
exterior. Virtually nothing is obvious or self-explanatory.

And Olusegun? It's virtually impossible to crack a big low-level program
like Window-Eyes. And even if someone could there's no such thing as
porting it over to Android. At best it could be used as a template for
an extremely skilled group of programmers to use as a guideline. Mobile
operating systems like Android do not possess the inherent ability,
programability, or processing power to do half of what a full blown
screen reader can do.

 Hi,

But you can, in Windows 10, adjust the volume of JAWS as a whole.

Go to System Tray, find your sound card and right click or press
applications key, then Open Volume Mixer. Now you will see a volume
specifically for JAWS. If you turn that down, it will turn Eloquence down.

This is only true with Eloquence.

If you are using Vocalizer or SAPI speech, you can adjust volume of the
speech.

To do this, press Insert-j for the JAWS window. In the options menu,
select Voices. Under that, select Voice Adjustment. You'll be asked to
select a default voice profile. Once you select Sapi or Vocalizer profile,
you will find that there is now a control you can tab to in order to set the
speech volume.

 Hope this helps.

I think that the Word Nav app was inspired by a feature that was already in

Re: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
It is good that one can do this, but it's sad that JAWS, the program said to
be the anointed screen reader for all time, does not provide a way to adjust
the synthesizer volume. On another note, it seems that help with nmouse
movement and adjusting how many pixels the mouse moves with each key press
is difficult to find. Yet, since I really don't worry too muich about either
of these, I enjoy those things about Window-Eyes. Nontheless, I am learning
my way around JAWS and getting along well. As has been stated in previous
posts, there are merits and pitfalls with all screen readers.

I think that the Word Nav app was inspired by a feature that was already in
JAWS. And you go in and out of its browse mode with insert-Z, which is the
same keystroke that is used with web browsers in JAWS.

All,

I will soon make the move to JAWS. The Wordnav app has provided very nice
functionality for navigating MS Word documents.

What are the JAWS commands, if any, closest to those in Wordnav for moving
through headings, tables and other document features?

Thanks in advance.

Reeva,

Good question. At this point we have no plans on taking down app central
but clearly at some point in the future will become irrelevant and go down.
I would hope as long as Window-Eyes can continued to be used it would be up
and if it does need to go down we would give people ample notice.

This is only true with Eloquence.

If you are using Vocalizer or SAPI speech, you can adjust volume of the speech.

To do this, press Insert-j for the JAWS window. In the options menu, select
Voices. Under that, select Voice Adjustment. You’ll be asked to select a
default voice profile. Once you select Sapi or Vocalizer profile, you will
find that there is now a control you can tab to in order to set the speech
volume.

Hope this helps.
