I like the idea of a small or even bigger bubble over the map, when you enter the website the first time (see example 1, 3, 6) This also could be a compromise between the three-column design and the current design. Personally i also like the three-column design quite a lot. You could easily add one line of 4 map thumbnails more and you also have the 'more maps' button on the bottom. If you mouse over the thumbnails you will get additional informations about the map. I don't know if we would get problems with screenshots from the Reit- und Wanderkarte including the contour lines and shaded reliefs, because AFAIK the license is not compatible ( i do not really know if odbl will make this better, but i don't think so) and it only works because the are overlayed in the browser. I also have a additional idea, what about a mobile version of openmaps.org, automatically detecting the mobile device (iPhones mainly ;-) ) and displaying different open mobile maps (opentouchmap.org for example)? Of course we would need a more advanced webinterface for the mobile version so you can easily use it. Please feel free to add your ideas! I don't quite understand how http://ae.osmsurround.org/ fits into the bug-tracker idea. The amenity editor is an osm data editor that works directly on the osm database. It does not create a special type of amentiy bugs that need to be distributed. I could see that it makes sense to be able to add bugs to the map while editing amenities but this is functionality which can easily be done with the current osb. I think the idea is, if you have a bug saying POI=xy missing, than the bugwebsite (it must not be bugs.osm.org) could provide you a link to the amenity editor for fixing it directly. Personally I think we should try to make a good API with a database behind it and should try to have the different functionalities made by different client-developers (i would say you can compare this with twitter, the original webinterface doesn't provide very much options, but with the api we see a lot of cool twitterclients adding all kind of functionalities and they also integrate with other services (facebook etc., in our case this would be JOSM..) very often. Of course we should also add a bug-tab to the website then, but the API and the database is the most important thing. There are also issues with search at the moment which mean we don't actually want to make it too prominent. Since the SOTM advert has been removed it should now be on the home page for most people anyway - the main problems come when there is extra stuff in the sidebar like the SOTM ad that pushes it below the bottom of people's windows. +1 Steve started a wiki-page with ideas for a frontpage redesign some time ago (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Front_Page), but it seems like the process stopped. Just look at this website here http://www.opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/summary/ and you'll see that the ODbL is as simple as CC-BY-SA. Should we convert all the building=collapsed to it ? I would say yes, because collapsed is not a type of building but a building attribute - the ITHACA way is semantically superior. If no one is depending on fixme:building=collapsed or building=collapsed then I'll convert them. Does the map rendering of collapsed buildings such as http://zvenzzon.mine.nu:81/map.html understand earthquake:damage=collapsed_building ? Considering the number of icons represented, it would appear so. Please have a look at the information here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Haiti#Ithaca_Import Please do not change this tags right now. We are still not sure how to work on further updates of the data and Ithaca might also still need this tags. (The boundaries do not re-use the existing coastline but instead duplicate it in a rough form; where tho administrative areas meet, ways are not re-used either but duplicated.) Usually, while we apply the rule better crappy data than no data at all for anything surveyed by humans, we are more strict with imports, and we ask people to either do it right or leave it for someone who can. But of course this is an exceptional situation in that many people seem to be using the map data *now* rather than some time later when we had the time to polish it, so it was probably good to import the data, buggy as it is. I agree. If you can provide a better import, why not just do it (may take some time of course) and revert the old import then? A super non-geek approved product would be a size-optimized PDF of the complete zone between border (including Jimaní and Pedernales) and the zone until Jacmel in the south, including all street names. I tried to produce that with osmarender, but it takes hours to calculate, seems it is not the right render tool. But the size ratio with osmarender is very good, with my tests with smaller *.osm files the ratio was about PDF size = OSM size / 8 Which means, that you can use as well low-RAM smartphones, older webpads etc. to display that map, without the need of connectivity. And any other device which can display PDF. The OCHA site has some PDF a bit like this, but not with every street name. And to give it a double oscar, having an optional coordinate grid would me great, or displaying the current mouse coordinate with JavaScript or something in the PDF viewer (Adobe includes JS, Flash AFAIK). I am no render guru, perhaps I used the wrong tool. The other thing is tracing of alternative streets to get into the city without traffic-jams. So, it would be good to have possible 4x4 roads, without using the two bridges, I don't know if that is feasible, it should be coordinated together with the helpers here, perhaps I could do something about it. Until now, the database had never been updated since the service was started in September 2009. Now, the geographic database used to render the maps is updated daily, providing maps with the latest contributions to OpenStreetMap. Each map contains the date at which it was generated. * Better city search engine. Thanks to Nominatim, we now provide a search engine that allows to find cities in a much more usable way: cities with the same name can be distinguished and the search works even when the city name is not completely correct. * Support for other languages. A few parts of the map rendering process is language-dependent and we now have the infrastructure to use language-dependent code. For the moment, we support English, French and Italian, but we are waiting for your contributions to support other languages. The website has also been translated to German and Italian. * Amenities in the index. In addition to the streets, we have added important amenities to the index: schools, town hall, post offices, places of worship, etc. Sorry for spamming, but it seems that MapOSMatic can do the job. I tried to generate Port-au-Prince, it came out 3.1 PDF. You can select any area you want and let MapOSMatic to render it into PDF. I agree that the perspective of the handle doesn't seem right and you're version seems to be a lot better. For me it looks like the glass is laying flat and the handle is sticking out a little bit in the original version. Your approach seems to be to make the handle also lie flat, another way would be to shift the glass to fit the current angle of the handle. Does that sound right? A note on this one for everyone not reading talk-de [1]: Ulf Möller, who has been a member of the OSMF Board and is part of the LWG, had been given a test device by Navigon in order to check for correct attribution. He was also asked by Navigon to distribute a text file [2] to the community which contains some basic information about how Navigon processes the data, links to download the packages for free (CC-BY-SA compliance AFAIK) and also instructions on how to install these files on a device. P.S. If they have de-duplicated these, as they claim, perhaps it is worth getting our hands on as a resource for cleaning up the database... Well, it would be nice and we could certainly ask for it, but with CC-BY-SA only the end product falls under the license and not the processed data in between. Are you sure? If we manage to extract the processed data, it'll be derived from either the end product or OSM or both, so it needs to be CC-By-SA too and there's no way around it. Yes, that's right. What I was trying to say is, that they only need to release the end product under CC-BY-SA and don't have to _provide_ any data sets from in between. Once we move on to ODbL however, this will change and we will get the much more interesting 'raw' data. Which we can't re-use in OSM however. Maybe you should explain why not, because from my understanding this data would be in an OSM compatible license because of the share-a-like aspect of ODbL [1]. Someone on IRC mentioned that the situation would be clearer under ODbL, too, but I think this is a false positive. Additionally with ODbL Navigon may take the position that they made a produced work. Yes, their POI packages maybe produced work and could be proprietary, but they would still have to release the processed OSM data from in between, which as I stated above might be more interesting to us. All that is only on how I understand the license and I'm not an expert on this. [Talk-at] Admin_level=6 Relations in Österre ich
[Talk-at] Der OSMBlog

Original-Nachricht Betreff:[Local-contacts] Language localisation Datum: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 10:43:29 +0100 Von:SteveC st...@asklater.com An: local-conta...@openstreetmap.org Dear all This is our first test of the local contacts list. Please translate and pass on the message that we have local languages in OSM now, German and partial French. If people want to help they should get involved on the dev@ mailing list http://www.opengeodata.org/?p=508 I suggest you send it to your local list and cc here so we see it. [Talk-de] State of the Map
State of the Map fahren.

Martin Koppenhoefer schrieb: 2009/6/17 wer-ist-roger juwelier-onl...@web.de: Hej Jens, nice mockup. But I like more the idea of having thumbnails side by side then this tab-like style. Yes, it is indeed quite nice, but IMHO not suitable for a large variety of different Maps (lets say 20-30). http://twitpic.com/80ic4 Just a sketch to illustrate my idea.
