I spent some time correcting the issues in Brussels. Now I start finding issues I don't have enough knowledge to fix alone. I assume it is better to send a mail per issue, so I start here with: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/240402 There is a FIXME in it before its boundaries are not complete. For me it looks a lot like: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/58274 which has a complete boundary. But one is Bruxelles, and the other is Ville de Bruxelles. I must admit I don't understand the differences. My idea would be to merge the extra data of the former into the latter. And remove the former. But as they are each in the relation of the other I may miss something or someone would have done the merge already, so here I am asking for a piece of advice. What should be done with: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/240402 Thank you in advance, Marc You should certainly not delete anything before you have fully understood the very complicated administrative structures of our country ;-) You may notice that we have two Belgiums. Notice that those boundaries are administrative level 8 and level 9, certainly not the same thing and that doing as you say is destroying. I have mapped thousands of kilometers of boundaries in Belgium and I might have a closer look at that if you want, but not just right now. Boundaries are complicated things. Cheers, André. * Ville/Stad* de Bruxelles is in fact a *Commune/Gemeente* made of 4 anciennes communes/deelgemeenten Brussels, La(e)ken, Neder-Over-Heembeek and Haren. What you see incomplete is the first one, but the other ones are incomplete too. The boundaries between them are missing. They must be added with the right name and the four boundaries must be closed over them. My only problem is finding the missing pieces if I do that, but I know where to look for them. Cheers, André. Thank you André for your explanations, I saw the administrative level difference, but I didn't know how to interpret them. Now I do :) If you could find the missing boundaries it'd be perfect! Or tell us where to look for them, may be me or someone else in the community can help there. [OSM-talk-be] covered or tunnel
Hello, With Keep Right, there is the following error: http://keepright.at/report_map.php?schema=72error=25113833 The error text is: This node is a junction of ways on different layers: #38962740http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/38962740 (-1),#116844652 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/116844652(0) It is because the way http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/38962740 has the tag tunnel=yes When I look at the wiki for the tunnel definition https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:tunnel And the one of covered https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:covered I presume that tunnel shall be replaced by covered as this way is a galerie at the same ground level as the 2 streets it connects to. So I looked at other galeries I know in Bxl to see how they're tagged. I see that galerie louise has also tunnel=yes http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/31001460 And galerie de la reine doesn't have anything. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/87501645 What should I do? I would believe put covered everywhere, and replace tunnel when it is used. Or I can do it only for the error of Keep Right? Or anything else you would suggest. [OSM-legal-talk] Open Government License - Canada
cc'ing to a few people who I have talked about this with in the past. Some governments in Canada have released data under the Open Government Licence - Canada, version 2.0. This is yet another new license. Some people have asked if we can use datasets available under this license. http://data.gc.ca/eng/open-government-licence-canada contains the full text of the version the Federal government is using. It is an attribution license and in a perfect world would be ODbL compatible. Of course we've seen plenty of attribution licenses screw something or other up. What is not obvious is that they expect other levels to modify the license to localize it with the information of their attribution statement and local laws, but let's start with the Federal one first. Once that's done we can look at BC, AB, Nanaimo, Vancouver... etc. One of the statements in the consultation on this license was The change of the attribution statement from OGL v1.0 to be one specific to the federal government reduces the ability to reuse this license by other jurisdictions (e.g. provinces) and will increase the number of licenses that have to be analysed. The origin of this license is the OGL 1.0, a UK license. The principle difference between UK and Canadian law is that database right does not exist in Canada. http://opendefinition.org/licenses/ lists OGL Canada 2.0 as an Open Definition conformant license. The question that matters for OSM is, can OGL Canada 2.0 datasets be released under the ODbL. One issue raised as problematic in some versions of the license is Personal Information For OSM, I do not see this as an issue. Personal Information is information about an identifiable individual, but datasets we would be interested in are information about places, not individuals. Third-party rights are a rights-clearing issue and something we'll need to check before using any source. Names, crests, etc and other IP rights would not be found in datasets of interest to OSM. Attribution is an odd one because they refer to information providers in the plural, but define it in a way so that it is only singular, so it's not clear which part of the attribution requirements applies. The ODbL requires that any copyright notices be kept intact for derivative databases. Produced works require a notice reasonably calculated to make any Person [...] aware that the content was obtained from [the database]. Attribution looks ODbL compatible, provided we figure out what statement to use. I'm not really sure where to take it from here in terms of an analysis. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk
Re: [OSM-talk] Geotag OsmAnd picture notes
Thanks Rob. Viking is a really great, I use it regularly. My current Linux systems are too old to install version 1.5 right now without pulling in a lot of dependencies that might break things. I tried the Windows version as a workaround (wine and Win8) but it refuses to 'open/import' the jpg files. I will look at it again when I have updated to a more current Linux system so thanks for the tip. The latest Viking version 1.5 also has the ability to Geotag images to a Waypoint's position. HTH. Be Seeing You - Rob. Also wenn dann vehicle=no, oder noch besser access=no. Re: [Talk-it] Errore mappatura Parco Villa San Martino
- Ciao, Aury -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Errore-mappatura-Parco-Villa-San-Martino-tp5783774p5783842.html Sent from the Italy General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

[Talk-ca] Open Government License - Canada
cc'ing to a few people who I have talked about this with in the past. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

Re: [Talk-GB] Primary or Trunk?
Sorry if I've not seen the old posts on this, the wiki pages are contradictory which is why I asked the question. In the UK we are defining Trunk or Primary based on some arbitrary definition not on anything that is of use to any user or renderer. What we should be mapping is reality, so that people can use that data to build on. Whether a road is signed in Green, Pink or Purple tells a user nothing, it may have a legal definition but that is all. The tag we give it should tell the user something about the road's capabilities, importance, size and potential timings/traffic flow. A Trunk road that is a dual carriageway with a maxspeed of 70 mph is very different to a Trunk road that winds around fields and has a maxspeed of 50 mph or less! Further on in the wiki it says that any A road in the UK signed with Green signs is a Trunk road. I know of many Green A roads that aren't much more than country lanes, they are definitely not high performance and I don't feel they should be Trunk roads, I feel they should be Primary roads. It's really very simple, and has been discussed here many, many times before and I'm sure there are multiple pages on the wiki covering it. First, forget the question of which roads are formally designated as trunk roads by the Department for Transport (which is not very many these days). Second, understand that there is something called the Primary Route Network defined by DfT which covers those A roads connecting specific major towns. Those are the A roads with the green signs, and are what we tag as highway=trunk. Other A roads are highway=primary. In many cases those will be major roads, often ex trunk roads, but in more rural areas like the highlands they might look more like a B road does in other parts of the country. That is irrelevant though. In the UK it is really only residential/unclassified/tertiary where you need to make a judgement call. Everything else has a well defined mapping: Motorways = highway=motorway Green Signed A Roads = highway=trunk White Signed A Roads = highway=primary B Roads = highway=secondary Hopefully that will explain everything ;-) Tom ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
Other tags such as lanes=*, width=*, surface=*, maxspeed=* etc... are for more the detailed nuances of route calculations based on the physical properties of the road. Or for how a renderer could choose to emphasize certain roads over others. Of course the bendyness of the road should be interfered from the geometry of the node positions themselves. The Primary Route Network is not arbitrary. It is made of of the most important routes connecting a defined set of major towns. Even where that is not a particularly major road it is still the main road between those towns and as such deserves to be highlighted. Hi, On 03.11.2013 21:51, Jonathan wrote: I've just googled PITA and it would appear that it stands for Pain In The Ass. Yeah, it's a common colloquial term for things that make life harder instead of easier, and used on this particular list quite often. Let's put it this way: You're essentially explaining to a couple hundred UK mappers that they have, in your opinion, been doing it wrong for the better part of a decade. Do you expect everyone to go: Oh why Jonathan, I hadn't thought about that but now that you say it, I suddenly see the error of my ways? Now that you have retaliated to that PITA email with something most others will also consider a bit rude, namely publishing a private message without the consent of its writer (if you had wanted to vent your anger, publishing it without the sender's name would have been sufficient), maybe we can go back to normal and you can explain which bits of TomH's explanation of the status quo you haven't understood. [Talk-GB] Moderation (WAS: Primary or Trunk? PITA?)
Hi all, I think its probably my turn to step in and moderate on this one given that Jonathan's original post stems from me asking him about some road classifications in his home town. To summarise: a simple question was asked entirely inocently, and I am 100% sure that it was not meant to belittle 10 years of tagging. An answer was given in quite a matter of fact tone which in face to face communication would be fine but due to the un human nature of email could be interpreted as negative. Again I am 100% sure it was not meant negatively. Similarly I have had many positive conversations with Chris, so hopefully his response was purely down to a misinterpretation of the emails. Lessons: * We should be able to explain the reasoning behind our tagging if asked. * Beware of the differences between email and face to face communication. It also helps if you are able to meet fellow mappers from time to time. * Off list replies are best reserved for situations where there is detailed conversation between two mappers and both feel that they are swamping the public mailing list. [Talk-us] Admin borders in the US
the scope of this series of messages is strictly confined to two related things: true admin borders which are tied to local government in a strict sense (that is, there is an actual elected governmental body) and CDPs which are lumped in as admin_level 8 even though they do not have elected governments (in NYS, these correspond roughly to Hamlets, which are long established named places without governments.) another upstate NY mapper and i have been cleaning up borders in NY. it's been a long going and often tedious effort, and in the process i've seen a lot of things. a bunch of discrete topics follow in separate email messages so that we can focus on each issue... richard signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Admin borders in the US: CDPs
first of all, CDPs. there's been an ongoing discussion about whether they belong in OSM at all, or whether they deserve their admin_level 8 classification. i have mixed feelings about the first, and am pretty sure we need a new way of classifying them if we keep them. here's some more fuel for the fire. one of the things i've seen in Westchester County is that between 2008 (the source for most of the current CDPs) and 2013, the Census Bureau rather substantially revised a bunch of CDP boundaries, mostly making them much, much smaller. so any 2008 CDP boundary is suspect for being way out of date. given that virtually no one is paying attention, that's a lot of stale, unmaintained data of marginal value sitting around. i'm updating the CDPs where i see these issues, but i'll probably miss some and i think we need to reopen the discussion about CDPs. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Admin borders in the US: misalignments
Misaligned borders - we have a lot of these early border imports came from multiple sources, and when they were done, it was rare to look at other border imports in the vicinity and clean things up. a good example is along the Hudson River, where the county borders were from USGS (which were not very good borders) and the places (cities, villages, CDPs) were from 2008 TIGER (better but not great). while the ways for the places were often shared properly by relations, the county borders were ignored because they didn't match and the result was that the border lines down the Hudson were an ugly mess. in updating borders down the Hudson, i've found that frequently 2013 TIGER borders are different (and largely improved) over 2008, and there is no reason to retain the USGS borders. likewise, i've similarly been replacing the USGS state borders with TIGER 2013 as needed. if anyone is foolish enough to take on these tasks, be aware of these things. in densely populated areas in particularly (Rockland County NY was bad and Westchester County may be worse) you may find a domino situation where you need to deal with a bunch of old, outdated place borders. Finally, one of the most festive situations i encountered was along the Delaware River - the NY/PA border. one early mapper used what looks like an NHD centerline for the border, which isn't necessarily a wrong decision, except it matched up with neither USGS county borders or any TIGER borders. for the sake of sanity this is now entirely TIGER 2013. again, don't do borders unless you are prepared to deal with the entirety of the situation that's in front of you. more on borders in the next note. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Admin borders in the US: proper construction of ways and relations
i've determined that a lot of the NY/PA border heading west from the Delaware has issues where no one bothered to break up and share the ways. and i've seen a lot of early work which we would now consider mistagged. this all sort of plays together... the ways in borders should probably not have any tags at all. early borders frequently have a bunch of tags (type, admin level, source). but ways can be in more than one border relation and for rendering purposes they derive their appearance from the relations that contain them. relations should have the standard core tags, but they should not have the mess of TIGER: tags they got from early imports and they should not have source tags. source tags go on the changeset (i have not been entirely consistent about this myself and i apologize for that before anyone calls me on it.) using URLs for sources turns out to be kind of useless, as things move around on the net. a clear text description is better: source=TIGER 2013 NY Places Shapefile signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Administrative boundaries are generally not verifiable by ground surveying, and are not straightforward to edit. This causes information rot. What good is administrative boundary information that are not trustworthy? Moreover, they are freely[1] and easily available from an authoritative source. For all these reasons combined, I would favor them not being in OSM at all. [1] At least in the case of the United States - except for periods of government shutdown. In other countries, like the Netherlands, there is no such easily accessible authoritative source for some boundary levels, in which case maintaining them in OSM makes more sense to me.
