Empty features -- an explanation

2004-10-19 Thread Maxim Masiutin
Hello Tbbeta,

If during the installation you see that a particular feature occupies 0 KB or an
amount of space smaller than it actually occupies, than it means that this feature
already resides on the disk installed by a previous version of The Bat! Setup, and the
new installation wont modify it.

But that is not the case in reality.

When I installed over a previous installation, TB core files were said

It shows the message from David Elliot is correctly located in its

The inbox in question does not contain the mail.

Does somebody experience something similar?

It is now the second time since I installed v3.0.2.1 that this

I can't see any real security problems with Google Desktop and it
 seems I'm not alone:
 http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1678974,00.asp.

 Copied to TBOT.

Hello:

From the article:

Yeah, it's possible for Google to do this, in direct violation of its own privacy
policy, but it's not necessary for them to do so. Google officials have been cited
elsewhere as saying that this arrangement of mixed results will get people to do more
online Google searches, enhancing the company's ad-based online business, and this is
plausible. Why would they want, instead, to lie to users in their privacy policy?

So the entire proof of his case that Google Desktop is definitely *not* security risk
lies on trust; it's possible... but not necessary; and a specious and naive
asseveration of why would they lie?. Seems hardly proof to me.

In this beta though, the display is NOT updated. Moving off the folder

It's possible that TB! indexes your hard drive and sends out all your
data to RitLabs! too. What's your point? At this point, it's just a
bunch of security consultants trying to make a name for themselves by
speculating at possible scenarios. In my research of the matter, no
one has shown it actually being abused.

This has gotten wildly OT. I requested in my initial post that if you
weren't in favor of the reply, to just keep quiet on the matter.
While this has generally held up (thank you for those that did), now
it's turned into a he-said, she-said security argument that a) would
bias those reading my original post (NB: Others could do their own
research if they wanted -- they don't need someone else giving them
their opinion) and b) doesn't belong on TBBETA. So at this point, I
request that further discussion of the security issues with GDS go
to TBOT or some other net sink hole.

SC Mary I am a little confused by this. What Viewmode do you use for
SC TBUDL? You seem to be saying you use No Viewmode. I do not have a
SC Folder Viewmode by this name, just a Global Setting by this name.

In TB!'s main window click on View/Global View Mode (scroll way
down)/No View Mode.

Then, again in the TB! main window, click on View/Sort-by , and change
your Sort-by choice to a different one.

Go to another folder. Then come back to the previous folder. The
change you set will not have been retained. The folder will have
reverted to the one before you made the change.

It is so hard for me to tell things clearly! Please ask some more, if
I haven't explained the problem well.

Message list not updating.

2004-10-19 Thread David Elliott
Hello TBBETA,

background

I have a manual filter that

1) exports a message.
2) calls notepad to edit the message.
3) Imports the message.

It also mark's the message as read so that I can see it has been
auctioned.

When the filer is finished the highlighted message in the message list
has not been updated as read.

The folder count of unread is updated.

If I move out of the folder and back then it is highlighted correctly.

I think that this is related to some one else on the list with colour
group settings as well.

Today, after three times switching on this ... machine I could again

There is no argument. Any semblance of an argument, you've created.
I've gone out of my way to try and prevent an argument, and I think
I've been rather polite about it. I don't really say one way or
another. I said no one has done anything more than say this could be
insecure and that my own research has turned out that is not the case
(neither of these are absolutes). But really, this issue of security
is orthogonal to the request. Might it sway one person one way or

all it is is speculation, and the intelligent person will formulate
his own opinion -- he doesn't need you to try and do it for him.

All I asked is, if you want to support the request, go to the URL. If

Re: Old Bug Column Settings do not stick, using No View Mode

2004-10-19 Thread Mary Bull
Hello Nick!

MB An old bug that I complained of on tbudl in v. 2.11, but got no one to
MB confirm, is that Column settings and View/Sort-by settings do not
MB stick when using No View Mode.

NA Just curious Mary, but don't you have to set your View Modes using
NA Options/Preferences/View Modes? What happens if you create, under
NA Options, a new view mode named No View Mode, set the parameters,
NA and then Ok the formation of that view. Now go ahead and make
NA changes to that new mode as you earlier suggested. Do they set
NA properly?

The default choices given to me on the View/Global View Mode drop-down
menu of the main window are:

Generic View Mode

No View Mode (with o underlined, which I cannot reproduce in my
charset)

I did as you suggested and created a New View Mode, named No View
Mode without the o underlined.

Choosing that, the parameters stick, and changes made in the drop-down
menu View/Sort-by stick.

But on the default choices No [underlined o] View Mode they do not
stick. Therefore, I think it is a bug.

I long since have a work-around. This was my problem in v. 2.11 ,
before I was ever a beta tester, which I reported on tbudl but no one
confirmed. So I did not make a BT report.

There is now a BT report, describing the problem and how to reproduce
it, for those who wish to help by testing the steps described here:

https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3962

I believe it is a bug, because using the default menu choice No
[underlined o] View Mode, this behavior occurs for both myself
(tested several times with different Sort-by choices, today, before
making the BT report) and David Boggon:

tbudl mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

subject line, column settings that don't set

I shall greatly appreciate it if you do have the time to test for this
bug, using the exact steps given in the BT report, and if you can
confirm it, put a note to my report.

While David B. and I have a work-around now, every new user of The
Bat! is likely to run into this behavior and be very annoyed until
he/she either figures it out by himself/herself or posts to tbudl
about it.

That is, if it is the bug that I truly believe at present, it is.

Thanks again.

On a similar subject (choosing spell checker automatically), MAU

incoming emails. Here is what he wrote (a bit out of context, but it
should be able to understand):

,-

| | %REGEXPBLINDMATCH='%HEADERS'%-
| | %SUBPATT='2'=eng:%LANGUAGE='CSAPI BR':%LANGUAGE='CSAPI SP'
| `-
|
| And in my reply templates I usually include this line:
|
| ,- [ ]
| | %Cursor%QINCLUDE=SLANG%-
| `-
`-

Install PopFile, start classifying emails depending on language used
(it learns amazingly fast) and modify the SLANG QT to suite your needs
and you should be able to achieve what you want.

All credits goes to MAU.

I'm treating this the same way I treat all speculation and anecdotal

So, that your No View Mode is not underlined with the lower case o

Re[2]: Old Bug Column Settings do not stick, using No View Mode

MB Then, again in the TB! main window, click on View/Sort-by , and change

MB Go to another folder. Then come back to the previous folder. The
MB change you set will not have been retained. The folder will have
MB reverted to the one before you made the change.

I see now what you mean. And actually what you are seeing here is what
I would like to see when you click on on a header to change the sort
order.

See bug report: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3949.

Maybe our views of how Viewmodes work differ. Here is my take on it.
Others can correct me where I am wrong.

There are two types of viewmodes, global and on a per folder basis.
Global viewmodes affect all accounts and all folders. So for example,
if I have 4 Global viewmodes as follows:

1) No Viewmode
2) Generic
3) By Date
4) By Sender

If I select one of the bottom three, then all of my folders will be
sorted by the appropriate definition in that viewmode.
If I on the other hand select the first one No Viewmode, then I will
be able to select a different viewmode for each folder.
(As an aside here: I believe that this is really the only selection
necessary as I see no real reason for Global Viewmodes. This is just
me though and others may have a good use for them.)

Now, once you select No Viewmodes under the Global Option, any
folder that is not using By Date or By Sender will automatically
use the Generic Viewmode. In your explanation above I believe this
is what you are describing. You are actually changing the Viewmode,
albeit temporarily, of the particular viewmode of the folder you are
currently viewing. If you really want a permanent change to that
viewmode then you can use Right click on the header bar and select
manage viewmodes.

Having said all this I think that viewmodes need to be streamlined so
they are easier to understand. When you click on the view menu you
should get an option for Manage Viewmodes and do away with all those
choices for sort etc. seeing as they only work temporarily.

I may have this all wrong but I think this is the way it works and
think it needs some changes. Any comments would be welcomed.

I consider this a nice feature. I have my mail marked

It also provides a starting point to begin reading (if

As I said, it is no longer a problem for me. Even though I didn't even
know where in Options/Preferences to find View Modes--way back when I
was running v. 2.11--the hint from a kind poster on tbudl to set my

problem. Set there, the parameters stick for that folder.

However, at least one other person--the poster to tbudl this

Therefore, it is a sort of bug--or at least a poor design--and worth

In a Unix mailbox messages are stored serialized. All in one text

A new message is recognized by a line starting with

As a lexical parse for syntactically completely correct line is much
to expensive mail handling tools often parsed only for 'From' at start

Install PopFile, start classifying emails depending on language used

No, it's because the '' is early enough in the line to make TB!
believe it is indication this is an answer. To change sensitiveness,
lower the value in Options | Preferences | Viewer/Editor | Editor

The Bat! stopped responding doing...?

2004-10-19 Thread George Mitchell
Hi all,

I had TB! 3.0.2.1 running in the background doing its thing while I
worked in other apps. I tried switching back to it and it had a
completely blank main window and an hourglass. I waited for several
minutes finally had to kill it. I have no idea what it was doing at
the time it froze. It automatically checks several POP accounts
fairly frequently, but there was no Connection Centre window open.

I've given up on 3.0.2.1. Hopefully, 3.0.1.33 is more stable.

3.0.2.1 Folders lost - cannot be retrieved

2004-10-19 Thread Peter Fjelsten
Hello beta testers.

 Due to the renaming bug
 (https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3848), things got really messed
 up here.

Anyway, restored the account name and all filters (a lot of work). One
 issue persists:

I cannot find my folders again. They are on disk but Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L
does nothing. If I make new folders with the old names, the folders
appear - but only until I close TB! and restart. Then they are gone
again. It seems as if some file has a list of folders in it and it
 doesn't get updated by TB!

 Any ideas?

Already selected.

Then, again in the TB! main window, click on View/Sort-by , and change
your Sort-by choice to a different one.

I have all my folders using a view mode that I had created, so I
selected a folder at set it to use 'no view mode'. I then changed the
sorting to something else.

Go to another folder. Then come back to the previous folder. The
change you set will not have been retained. The folder will have
reverted to the one before you made the change.

I can't duplicate this problem. I don't know if it's because I have
other folders using specified view modes or because I have other view
modes defined.

It is so hard for me to tell things clearly! Please ask some more, if
I haven't explained the problem well.

Actually, you were quite clear. :)

You can choose it. What you're doing when you choose this option is
specifying that you do not wish all your folders to be using a single
view mode. You're freeing up the folders to be configured to use their
own specific view modes. I have that options selected.

However, for each folder, there's a particular View Mode selected. For
my discussion list folders, I have them set to thread by references and
have the columns set up for that. For others I have them set to an
unthreaded type view mode. For my sent and outbox folders, I have
another view mode configured for them.

If I had defined a particular global view mode, then it would take over
and I couldn't define a specific and unique view mode for any one folder.

It may be a POP issue. I'm using IMAP accounts here. shrug

I even changed the order in which the actions are carried out. I put the

I cannot duplicate the problem either way.

I think that this is related to some one else on the list with colour

Perhaps.

Perl to RegExp

2004-10-19 Thread Avi Yashar
I posted the following message to one of the TB support forums, but -
after 24 hours - have received no response. It does not seem that the
three relatively new forums are much in use. So let me try this
request for help here.

As I understand, the TB regular expressions are based on or at least
very similar to Perl. So here is my question/problem. I have a simple
Perl script that does exactly what I want (although how it does it I
do not entirely understand, because I don't know Perl). I want to get
the same effect in a TB template. So what should it look like in the
template?

Here is the Perl:

--
#!/usr/local/bin/perl -w

# jaymail.pl

while() {
$blank++ if /^$/;

if ($blank) {
print;
next;
}

print if /^(From|To|Subject): /;
}
--

Please rescue me from this quandary and make my life much, much easier.
