and you will get (something like this)

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22000.348]

So it is still windows 10.

It is possible to create a folder with non printable characters if you
highlight a message and press Ctrl+shift+F

If you do and start it with * and use shift+ctrl+alt+l then you get extras
 folders.

This is still present.

And there some other bugs as well.

The folder does not appear until you 'turn it off and turn it on again'.

Filter any messages before you close the program and they disappear until you

Magic. The disappearing Bat (Still)

Hello Tbbeta,

The TB! is really starting to annoy me. This was happening with previous
versions, but I can not tell you when it started.

When I move from one message to another (using CTRL + ) TB! disappears, in
one of the quickest shutdowns possible (AKA crash).

It was present in the first public release and it is still here.

It does not happen every time but once or twice a day.

The 'normal' practice of switching it off and on again goes not appear to

This is with Normal folders with pop.

Killing TB! process in Task Manager is not enough?
After killing a process you should be able to restart TB! without

When I say it 'disappears', I mean that it is gone, no process is in the task

4.2.44.2 to 5.0.8

Hello All,

Since there was going to be no more developmet of Ver 4 as quoted in
mid:274287867.20110408225...@ritlabs.com I decide to move to 5.

I have taken the version publicly available from the web and installed
straight over the 4.2.44.2.

And frankly I am disappointed.

1 So far it has disappeared on me three times, in about 3 days of use.
2 Any thing like a smiley face :) appears as a square with the two bits of
text characters in it.
3 Sort order in a lot of my folders has changed. So I needed to go through
about 200 folders changing them back.
4 There is something else with the folders but I have not been able to place
it yet.

There are a few other very small things that make me feel uneasy using it, but
I can not place what they are.

As far as I am concerned the only reeal difference between the last beta
version of 4 and the first public version of 5 is the number of bugs that I
encounter has gone up. It takes me back to the days of ver 1.3x when I first

Mail sticking in the out box

2009-04-06 Thread David Elliott
Hello Tbbeta,

I have this problem with mail sticking in the out box.

It has been happening for a few beta's but I can not remember when it
started.

The mail just sits there no matter what I do.

Including Alt + F2, Shift + F2, Park then Unpark.

Once this happens it sometimes stops all messages form going out.

I have tried logging but no log is produced.

The only way is to restart TB.

I can see the reason for that. I.e. it does not want you making any changes
whilst doing the backup. But it also downloads the mail as well so that is
not really a reason.

And

Can I add to that if you cancel the backup the dialogue box stays there. You
then have to close it with the cross in the top right.

They're called Modal Windows. As David tell you, the backup process
it's important and you should not touch nothing of the program during
the process. All the programs protect his interface within modal
windows when they're doing something important or they're waiting some
 input.

I agree with the modal window approach, although there are ways round it.

I am always surprised that it still collects and sorts mail whilst doing a
backup.

AVG 7.5 (Server version)

I have is set to do automatic backups.

On a start it was performing an automatic backup, and AVG was updating.

AVG needed TB! to be shutdown. As it was in the middle of a backup I
decided
to wait until it had finished.

When it had finished I clicked the OK button on the AVG this tried to shud
down TB! However it was now downloading messages. So the Dialogu came up
asking how / when to shut down.

At this point I got the dialogue up 'Not enought timers available' after
this I had to use the task manager to shut tb! down

Screen shot attached (I hope)

I have been reading the thread. For practical purposes it is about
 Gmail.

I started this thread, and at no point did state I had a problem with
Gmail.
I just had a problem.

What I am concerned about is that The Bat! had a problem and did not inform
me that it had a problem.

I have hundreds of TB users in many countries around the world.
I teach them about the Log because I want them to be aware and
enabled, not controlled by ignorance. On the _very rare_ occasion that
a message doesn't download they know where to look for the reason,
and, can view all of the account activity.

Yes it is rare, it is that rare that you don't always look for it. If I was
informed that it could not download a message then I could do something
about it. No information no action.

One of my jobs has been as system admin as such I always wanted to be
informed if there was a problem. If I could not guarantee that a system
would inform me of an error the I would set it up to inform me of a
success.

I always assume that no error message means that everything is OK. If
something goes wrong I want to know. As I stated earlier, I don't care
who's
fault it is I just want to know.

Also, all users are taught how to use the webmail interface for their
 account(s).

Some account don't have such a thing.

How many times have you, or another user, had this problem with a
 service other than Gmail?

Not many. That means that on the rare occasion that there is a problem I
want to know.

It was Gmail that started this thread. It is still about Gmail with a
miniscule need for this using other providers.

NO. I did not state it was gmail. I just said I had a problem.

I am not against an error message for non-downloadable messages.

Good.

I am totally against a large _red_ panic message as you suggest.

Just let The Bat! tell me some how.

The log is not enough.

To see stuff in it you need to go an look.

Please don't let TB! go the way for the stupidest user imaginable.

What if you have gone away from your computer for a cup of coffee. A
message
of two could not be saved because of space. Then because of a process that
you are running e.g. a clean up, space becomes available it can then
download the next set of messages.

In this case the warning would have gone past in the status bar, you would

It's actually how GMail behaves - the messages are deleted as soon
as they're downloaded, no matter what client wants to do with them
 afterwards.

I have spotted other gmail behaviour that I don't like.

You can use Web interface and reset counters to be able to download
messages again. Beware the dupes! :-)

[+] Backup/Restore: It's now possible to specify folders to restore

Oh good. I might get rid of my problem with folders that I cannot delete.

Just to say U and Running. I will now try (but not for a day or two).
Back up only the Accounts I want.
Un install TB!
Delete any / all traces.
Restore from backup.

And then we will see what happens.

I will also try to sort out my list templates as they have got lost in the
last reinstall.

Sounds like you got hit by plain old filesystem corruption.

I don't think so.

There's practically nothing that TB can do about this (except maybe
provide some way to fish out the remnants of messages from the scattered
files - assuming their content is more or less intact), since the
 corruption happened below it's level.

I am not sure at what level it has happened. But at least the contents are
OK I just have to work out where they all go.

Hello All,

Well I have just had a power cut just as I was closing down TB.

All my folder and account have disappeared.

I did the ctrl+shift+alt+L or what ever it is to find lost folders.

I also have multi folders / accounts linked on to one folder.

It is just a total mess.

No not a video card error.

 I don't actually buy that.

Fact: you are editing a message. You have 4 disposition buttons at the
top (and menu options). Hover help tells you Save as draft on the
3rd button. Every single user can figure that much out

I buy that. It may have been a good solution when people had a couple
of mail accounts but these days some people have dozens. If someone
uses drafts extensively they are scattered over several inboxes. The
way most people use email, it just makes sense to consolidate them
 into one place.

We already have the new feature that allows us to change what account
is used to send and email from within the editor. If you change the
account, where will it save the draft? ... or re-save it?

I am not concerned with how the message gets into the outbox. What concerns
me it how to identify between the following.

A message that has not been finished and needs further editing therefore
Draft.

and

A message that is finished but you don't want to sent and have therefore
Parked.

Both visually look the same.

I would concede the use of a Draft folder if there was a way to identify
between the two different stated.

Hello All,

I would like to open a discussion for the need for a draft folder.

It is something I have been asking for since ver 1.3.

Personally view.

I want a draft folder because to me there is a difference between

1) A message in the outbox that is complete but you do not want to send yet

and

2) A message the you have not finished editing but can not complete.

I have need for both but they both get parked in the outbox and I can not

the only thing that should be allowed in front of greater-than

Problems with 4.0.14

2008-03-01 Thread David Elliott
Hello All,

Well I have been only using TB for less than 24 hours and it is
driving me mad. This is after a break of about a 5 months.

It is nice (or not) to see how something have not changed.

1) Trying to refilter a common filter to an inbox.

I highlighted a piece of mail in my in box and go to create a filter
for it. As it is a list email which I am on with more that one
account I think a common filter would be nice. So I set it up a
filter to move the mail using the to address as the trigger.

Then try to refilter and dos it NO. To get round this I had to move
the filter into each account then refilter.

2) Hogs CPU time and locks up.

I am running the Pro version with On-the-fly enabled. And peridocally
it just lock up. The worst case was when trying to debug the above
problem.

I has about 65,000 messages in my in box mainly for 2 different
lists. I start the refilter off and can eacly see that it is not
filtering so I press cancel.

After 2 minutes of total lock up of TB (even the ticker is stopped) it
comes back to life.

CPU is at 50%

I am running 2003 Server with a duel core 3.02 with 2G ram

3) Draft folder.

Still we do not have one. I have been asking for one since I started
using TB back in Ver 1.3x.

The Final Straw

2007-09-27 Thread David Elliott
Hi All

I hope this is in text format but as I have been reduced to using
gmail I can not guarantee it.

I have been using TB since about 1.3 but I do feel that even this
version 3.99.24 is not really any better.

Some things just have not improved.

e.g. backup up and restore.

Ok so I want to do is backup up everything and then restore it. Do not
use the backup and restore it becaus it does not work.

My last attempt I lost all my rules.

The latest thing is that TB is refusing to start. I am getting a win32
exception this is after removal, reinstall, reboot, delete.

I am now left with no access to my past 2 years email. (after having
lost 4 years email with another crash of TB a couple of years ago.

Well, if you mean a common folder with that description, I can confirm
it. As I don't use common folders I created one and copied four
 messages to it.
A single redirect works fine, a multiple redirect via the editor works
fine too, but a redirect via one address bar just does nothing.
From an account it works fine, but from a common folder nothing.

If you add it to bug track I'll confirm it.

The only fix is correct start with OTFE enabled.

Ok, but when will the problem with the redirect be fixed.

1) Highlight a number of messages.
2) Click on the redirect button.
3) Forward/Redirect of multiple messages
4) Click on the radio button 'Address all messages to the address(es)
   below'
5) Fill in the address and click on OK

Nothing happens.

The new machine is able to run outlook and since that is what has been
given to me our IT support will not give me support to set it up TB.

I do have TB running on my old machine and that it will receive email but
not send (I think that this is a user/password problem).

When I get this sorted I am going to use TBV for my accounts.

But that flag is not a draft flag it is a parked flag.

How do I know looking at the flag if it is

1) a message that is finished waiting to go but is parked.

or

2) A message that is not finished.

There are mail clients that have a separate Drafts folder, but this is
because they don't have an opportunity to park individual messages by the
 draft flag.

We cal alter the outbox protection feature to automatically mark all
messages copied to the outbox as draft. This will save from
accidentally sending them. You will have to explicitly unpark them to
 send them out.

This 'outbox protection feature' would be useful but it is no replacement
for a draft folder.

If a message is in the outbox it is ready to be sent. It might be parked
because you do not want to send it now.

If a message is draft folder it is there because it is not finished with.

Both are very different trying to combine it with 'parked' messages in the
outbox proves that you have not thought the different statuses that a
message can go thought.

I have asked for a draft folder since I started using the bat in beta
(about ver 1.3 I think) I have not said anything recently about it because
it has always fallen on deaf ears.

Hello Mary,

Monday, December 12, 2005, 10:21:09 PM, you wrote:

In the Outbox, there is no parked flag. There is only Draft flag in
 the Outbox.

I think David was referring to your proposed change, to automatically
Park every message that is saved to the Outbox.

No actually it is a 'parked' flag when the message is in the outbox. Maxim
(and others) may call it a 'draft' flag. Even the Bat calls it a parked
flag in some places.

I have asked for a draft folder since I started using the bat in
beta (about ver 1.3 I think) I have not said anything recently
about it because it has always fallen on deaf ears.

Yes, but why should we blindly copy feature to only accommodate
habits of the users of these programs without deeper understanding
 of what's behind these features?

There is a reason why every other email client has a draft folder, and it
will not be because they are copying each other.

It is not to accommodate habits I've brought here from other programs
that I need a Draft folder. I have been using The Bat! for over three
years now and have completely forgotten how the e-mail clients Eudora
Pro 4.0 and Outlook Express used to work.

The reason I need a Draft folder is to keep the two different statuses
 my messages may have separate:

!) Saved, but still needing to be worked on. (Draft)

 2) or Saved and ready to go, but I don't want to send it yet
   (Outbox, parked)

This is my main reason for wanting this feature.

When I receive a number of email (It can be 500+ in one go) I usually hit
the reply to button for the ones that need an answer and then immediately
save the message as draft.

After I have gone thought all my new messages I then go back to my Draft
folder (yes I have creates one) and then proceed to edit all the draft
messages and then hit send.

I also have a number of messages that are finished but I don't want to
send, these messages in different status get confused as there is no
difference as far as the bat is aware.

And another reason I would find a Draft folder useful is that I
anticipate its folder properties would not over-ride my Address Book
 templates.

Please try The Bat! Voyager BETA at

Just extract the ZIP archive to your flash drive and start from there.

It will ask your order number from The Bat! Professional registration,
and your The Bat! Professional key.

Humm, Not sure where mine is. I think I lost it in a crash one time.

But used the order number that you suggested.

We will do separate order numbers for the Voyager later.

:)

It doesn't matter to which drive your mobile drive have mounted. If the
drive letter has changed, the program should work properly.

 Your feedback is very appreciated.

A feature that would be nice is a way to get round fire walls / proxy's at
my current work that will not allow contact with the outside world except
via a proxy on port 80 and one or two others.

You can activat the flash drive outside your work firewall (e.g. from
home) and then bring it to work.

I have done that.

I think thats not what David meant. He wants to tunnel POP3 access thru
port 80 if he's behind a firewall that doesn't allow access to port 110 (or
 25, or 995...)

You have got it. Sorry if my first suggestion was not clear.

P.S. I also have a problem with MAPI but that is a different matter.

It has just some cosmetic fixes over .13, but if someone likes to see
higher version numbers, he could download .14 here:
 http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files/the_bat/thebat_pro_3-62.msi

I have real problems with this one. It is taking at least 3 attempts to get
it to run. It is locking up on the splash screen (with the spam filter
showing).

Two problems

2005-08-06 Thread David Elliott
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello All,

Two problems have occurred in the past week.

1) The Bat! locking up on start up.
You get the splash screen and then the small banner about the standard anti
spam plugin. It locks up at this point and the two splash screens do not
clear.

2) Unable to close 'Find message'
I have done a couple of searched to find a message or two and it is now
locked.
This also prevents me closing down The Bat!

Picture of 'Message finder' at http://download.webfor.biz/Personal/tb.png

I now need to hit the bat with a big stick.

Yep that is checked. (Don't ask it gets complicated)
So the message can get caught by both filters.
So I ask again which one should move it when it gets caught by both.

ASK IIRC, the message is a fixed object during the filtering stage. If both
ASK filters move the message, you should have two copies in the two
destination
ASK folders (I haven't tried that however).

No. The keyword for the filter here is move, not copy. The message
is an object in computer-speak, don't know what a fixed object is.
Filter 1 moves the object (message) to the spam folder, filter 2 moves
it to the list folder. So it ends up in the list folder only, there
are no two copies (unless you browse deleted messages, but we won't go
into this). He would have two copies has he told the filters to copy
 instead of move the message.

ASK Maybe thats a topic for TBTECH?

No, rather for TBUDL. It's not a very technical question, every user
has filters like this so it's rather basic, and it's not a beta issue either.

I have a filter for friends and one for lists. It is possible for a
message to get caught by both.

ASK To avoid that, I've set up my filters for mailinglists as subfilters.

How complicated. The more straight-forward solution is to *not* check
continue processing If you are not sure and get too many false
 positives, recalibrate your spam filter.

The reason that I put it here is because filter activity was changes some
time ago, and I was wondering if it had changes again.
