Unfortunately POP3 filtering is not working properly with

Hi Guys,

As I said before I'm new here but I watched the list for last two days and I
have a feeling that there is rather a battle ground
... unfortunately one side only (haven't seen any feedback messages from The
Bat! team).

Frustrated user - I can understand them/us.
I'm frustrated about some issues as well and about the fact that I need to do
part of filtering manually.

I might be mistaken but that all fight is rather not helping anyone.

Maybe a solution would be to prepare and discuss with the programmers a
priority list of bugs to be fixed and stick to it.
Some features are not important to some users but they might be important to
other users.
In ex: IMAP bugs are not important for me at all but I understand its
importance for some people (what I saw they are rather minor problems any way).

I'm sorry to write that in my opinion personal opinion Smileys shall rather not
be a priority and is minor matter for The Bat! users.

Major matters for all of us are rather problems connected with the reason we
spend money to buy Your product :)
1. Superior Filtering (that needs some adjustments at the moment),
I have another problem connected with filtering but not going to report it yet
- might be because I skipped something (newbee as I wrote before :) ).

2. Virtual Folders matter,

3. IMAP matter,

x. Smileys (probably for all of us at the very end of priority list)

Actually it is a bad idea to compare software with cars, but if you insist...

Did you pay for that car or did you trade in the earlier model you bought for
the next model without paying anything at
all?

If you have paid in order to be able to use the new model, or if you have
bought the new model without having an older
model: did you take a test drive?

If the answer to that question is yes, was the problem known to you when you
decided to buy?

If the answer is no, were you forced to buy/upgrade? If yes, check
with the one who made you do it. If no, take
responsibility for that decision.

As you can see, I'm still using 4.2.44.2 (and should go back because
4.2.44.2 suffers from the problem with images on
https servers) because I don't have the time, nor the setup to simply test it
on a non-productive setup. Based upon the
messages I can read here, I would not have relased 5 if I were Ritlabs, but I

until the features I need and already have in 4 seem to work properly in 5.

This posting violated the list rules regarding
top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your
message and following it with all quoted text below, is not
encouraged and we actually request that you not do so on this list
because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to
which you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to,
and then below the quotation, type your response. If you're
responding to more than one part of the original, then quote each
part separately and follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that
you may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much
respect this. However, this is the format that most of the active
members here prefer and all members are expected, and are being
asked to use the format that will make most of the active membership
here comfortable reading. You'll likely get a more responsive group
when you post using a style that is comfortable for them to read and
understand.

Prioritisation of issues is down to the developers. They are usually
pretty fair about the order of bug fixing. Show stoppers have top
priority.

Sometimes it seems that a low priority bug has been given unfair
promotion and an early fix. As a developer myself, I can understand
that it makes no sense to be fixing a major bug in a module and not
fixing a minor one in the same module while it's out on the bench.

Sometimes a bug will take too long to fix and the attempt will delay
a release that contains many other important fixes and feature
updates. While frustrating for those affected by such a bug, I can
understand why these things happen.

One argument is that software with known bugs is never releasable. I
even once held that view myself. As software and its sphere of use
and influence ever expands, so this ideal goal slips ever further
into the distance. I don't think that's a reasonable expectation of
complex software that has to cater for many real-time events and
vagaries. But that's just my personal take on it.

4) All software has bugs, even known bugs.

All I can advise you to do is to just read the comments on the 5.0.8
realease again. And a bit more thoroughly this time. It's not about
bugs, known or unknown, it's about real annoyances and problems,
experienced by people who have to pay mony for it.

In short, they let people pay for software that has trouble with basic
functions, like filtering and virtual folders. Moreover, it did take
less than a day after release to notice those problems.

I think that's a crying shame.

Lots of true things in what you say. Unfortunately the official
release of v5 [as before with every other major official release
version] was so premature that the remaining [active] users of TB
might be a tad offended. Many have reported severe bugs, which are
still in a program version SOLD to unsuspecting folks.

We need not wade too deep into marketing waters to see that there is a
problem: finding a well-featured mail client which shows ghost
messages, crashes frequently, produces AVs and Exceptions regularly,
does not filter correctly ... in short, does not handle the basics of
a mail client is not persuasive to shell out money.

E-mail is increasingly shifting toward Web/cloud services, from
Facebook messages to Twitter, Web mailers like Google, smartphones. A
desktop client is not a necessity anymore, it is a luxury. I am still
on POP3 for essentially one reason, The Bat!, sadly the reasons I want
to use it dwindle as the very features I want to use don't do their
job.

I recommended TB for years to private and business contacts, without
them paying me to help with setting it up. It was for sheer
enthusiasm. Last year I was called in by a client to help set up his
new computer. I thought about recommending TB, setting it up, as I
think it would increase his productivity. Well, in a first round, for
historical reasons, we went with Thunderbird, which I find ... [put in
expletive of choice]. After a few months we decided to change to
Outlook ...

I cannot recommend TB! anymore because it does not enhance
productivity anymore. It hinders it. For instance, I have to start the
program two times when I run it the first time because some message
stays in the Mail Ticker although it is marked read and deleted. That
is not just annoying. And filters, and View Modes, the dreaded
TMailHandler Released Before ...

The keyword here is basic functions. I need my email both for work
and study, and I have not dared to up(down?)grade to v5 yet. V5 is not
ready for release yet, IMHO.

Yes, they've built it from scratch (if I understand correctly) meaning
it's a completely new software with the same look-and feel as the
previous one. A lot of work, I can imagine. However, as a new
software, it is bound to have bugs in modules that worked flawlessly
in earlier versions (actually, versions of the previous software).

It is a big step for Ritlabs to take, rewriting the software (but not
cross-platform, which I think is a missed opportunity), but the new
software should be at least on par with the old one (plus the working
IMAP support as promised for v2) before a first release.

That's only my opinion, and Ritlabs will make their own decision. I
will wait for the filters and virtual folders to work correctly, and
the reports of AVs to stop, before I'll give v5 a try. I need this to
work correctly and reliably before I will even consider looking into
tooltips (that apparently can't be turned off reliably) or 2D barcode
gadgets.

Re: 5.0.9.7

2011-04-29 Thread F.P.
Hi,

2011/4/29 Maxim Masiutin m...@ritlabs.com:
The Bat! 5.0.9.7 (BETA) is available at
 http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/a-5/tb5097.rar

Filters an Option ReFilter does not work. Last working version *.138
for the option ReFilter.
Guess Image Smileys are extremely important to fix. Can we expect
working IMAP Filters in 2011 ?

Regards

That may be a LOT deeper issue than the wrong icon when started from a shortcut.

 What's new in 5.0.9.7 since 5.0.9.6:

[-] (#0008204) Image smileys were not working when The Bat! was
started from a desktop shortcut with no Start in folder defined

This does not seem to be working correctly yet

Failure of filtering is failure of basic function in e-mail client.
