Yes, on the editor of the mails in outlook you should select HTML or
Plain Text. Rich Text will use winmail.dat

I see it sometimes when the message it's broken (big emails cutted by

MM>> but I was wrong, it was implemented in 4.0 already :-)
TF> No, not in the version I am using.

It should be, because this is in the change log:

,- [ ]
| 4.0
| ---
|
| Security has always been the RITLabs' characteristic feature. This credo was
not forsaken by The Bat! 4.0 developers - they introduce the URL manager for
background retrieval of the HTML images. Its appearance is caused by malicious
codes penetrating PCs through graphic elements of the HTML messages more and
more frequently. New manager blocks the suspicious images and lets the safe
ones through. URL Manager controls the retrieval of messages not by folder or
addressee, but by particular hosts or URLs.
|
| Large-scale innovations were made in The Bat! 4.0 folder tabs. Now users are
armed with Favorite sets of folders and addresses which allow grouping the
folders according to various criteria regardless of their mailbox positions.
Users with large and sophisticatedly structured message bases shall appreciate
this quick message access option. One can add his working projects to different
Favorite sets, view his most important folders using Favorites or even read the
new messages from virtual folders added to Favorite sets. Each Favorite set may
contain folders (including virtual ones) and Address History, which is also a
The Bat! 4.0 novelty.
|
| Address History gives users the possibility to track messages for each of the
correspondents. Users may quickly find messages from a particular person, find
out when this person replied or wrote a message for the last time, etc. The
setup wizard collects initial information from the existing message base, so
users can start navigating the Address History right away. Address History is
totally adjustable - unnecessary correspondents can be deleted from this view
mode, addressees can be divided into groups for the user's convenience. When
the Address History is enabled, the list of the recorded correspondents can be
accessed on the Addresses tab of the folder pane in the main program's window.
It can also be combined with the Favorite sets.
|
| In The Bat! 4.0 users will find an improved convenient interface. The main
windows of the program have a modern look. Headers and free spaces of the
windows have nice gradient background, unnecessary borders around graphic
components were removed, avoiding visual clutter. The account section of the
status bar has its own customizable popup menu, the status bar itself having an
option to show/hide the account log.
|
| The MicroEd text editor is improved. Now it supports Unicode, which means
that one message can contain symbols from various sets (Latin, Cyrillic,
hieroglyphic sets, etc.). In the new version any system fonts can be used for
writing messages. Work with the editor is handier; the text search is equipped
with new options.
|
| The developers highly improved the internal image viewer. Now it allows
viewing all the attached images in selected messages navigating between them.
The viewer supports rotate, advanced resize and zoom algorithms and full screen
mode.
|
| Among other novelties the following ones should be mentioned:
| - %EMAIL% environment variable which simplifies The Bat! support and
maintenance;
| - smart security buttons in PGP and S/MIME messages;
| - addressee's name capitalization thanks to a new %TOFName macro
processing algorithm;
| - Outlook's attachment TNEF format support;
| - work with JPEG images with CMYK and YCCK color schemes;
| - five times faster message sorting, less memory consume due to fixed
memory leaks.

Exactly the same happened to me last Saturday and also with a reading
confirmation, I don't know if generated by Outlook 2010 though.

As you can see in my signature I use TB v4.2.44.2 and I had not had
any problem with winmail.dat attachments (which many times contain the
actual message text) in a long time.

Curious about what could be the problem I installed 'Winmail Opener 1.3'
which I still had from the days when TB could not decode them, and,
surprise surprise, it would freeze when trying to decode the winmail.dat
attachment.

As I don't give up easily, I went to the Winmail Opener website and
downloaded the latest version, 1.4 updated in Dec. 2011. This version
can open and (apparently) decode the winmail.dat I received. It shows:

  Subject: N/A
  From: N/A

and what should be the message text is just blank. However, if I view
source in TB, it doesn't look like the winmail.dat is empty.

Are you sure? A MS technet post I read explains how to prevent sending
winmail.dat, but only to specific addressees. There is no mention of
an option that Outlook users (without Exchange servers) can tick or
untick to globally turn sending winmail.dat on or off.

Is this incorrect? Is there such an option?

Hello Alto,

it's such a long time ago I had to tell a friend (who'd just bought Office 2007
and was verrry proud to use the new Outlook) how to DE-install sending the
winmail.dat file to me that I forgot where to do this.

As a music promoter he sent this file with every pdf, all the graphics and
informations out to every jounalist in his address book. A nightmare...

From what I read it's even de rigeur (a MUST) to NOT attach this file -
actually every specialist recommended to configure Outlook so you won't send
this attachment with every mail.

At least you can click that away every time someone sends this file; so it
won't do harm to your computer. But why send this attachment anyway?

I doubt TB or any e-mail cient not based upon OL can decode it. Just
ignore it, nothing of interest in it, just some logistical overhead of

Hello -

no one should ever send a winmail.dat file to anyone as an attachment to a mail.

Anyone (in fact any stupid person or newcomer to all matters computer and
software) who does this didn't configure his Microsoft Outlook program
correctly.

Even if it's a person who you trust you should delete this file immediately and
never open it.

Especially if it's a person you trust send him an email telling him he should
enter "winmail.dat" in Google and search how he can program/change Outlook so
he won't ever attach winmail.dat again.

Simple. They come up with something new, hope that enough people will
use it and by doing so try to make defacto standards that they hope
others will support.

I've heard that Novell is supporting this MS-only attachment encoding
style called MS-TNEF in their latest incursion of their GroupWise
Internet Agent gateway if only to get rid of the questions of their
customers.

The reason almost any mail from Outlook has this attachment, even if
no files were attached to the e-mail is that it is used to store
Outlook specific additional mailproperties as well. Why they don't
just use X-headers for those is beyond me.

All I'll say is ... what the zarking photon is that double line
spacing all about? Looks like you're using a "slightly tweaked"
wrapped quotes template. Do you need some help with putting it
straight? (goto TBTECH for that).

As you suspected, Outlook sends weird stuff. Some information and
solutions (including a link to a decoder) can be found at:

Then we should add this to "tips and tricks":-) Glad it finally
worked for you. The whole thing is about the following: "how to
make Netscape know that *this* non-HTML file is of special
(enriched) type and contains fancy formatting?". It's done by
setting MIME type of association to text/enriched. This way
Netscape is forced to use its knowledge about text/enriched
MIME type handling when in Messenger (FYI, it shows
enriched messages in Messenger as if they were HTML,
exploiting probably that portion of C code I've supplied recently).

Yes, now I'm trying Alexander trick as follow :

Create the association (via Windows explorer) with the following
properties:

Description: message enriched

Type (MIME): text/enriched

Standard extension: .enriched

Action: open by netscape.exe (no commandline qualifiers!)
Application to use to perform action : point to netscape.exe

Confirm opening: unchecked

Allow quickview: unchecked

Always show extension: checked.

It work !

I see. This means TB now can separate it from main message. I like
that, most of Exchange user generate this TNEF attachment if replying
MIME messages.
