Hi Bat Users, There seems to be a lot of talk about spam filtering and even suggestions for using extra programs. Has anyone setup a good working Spam filter that he or she would be willing to share with this group? I only filter on the absence of my email address in the to field. It's crude but is works pretty well except for certain mailing lists I subscribe to. Therefore I have to put filters for these lists ahead of my Spam filter. RITLabs is actually working on a version with a working title 1.54. The put in a lot of features wished for and promised for v2. Due to some comments by Maxim we know that v2 is scheduled for the first quarter of 2002. Some of us suggested - it was also mentioned as an educated guess - that the current beta will be the first v2. RITLabs even thought of publishing a new official release before Christmas but was talked out of it unanimously by members of the beta list. If you are interested in the development join the beta list and even try out beta 26 which is quite good. Actually most betas from RITLabs up to now have been much more useful and stable than many release products by other companies. Since I use TB professionally I am very reluctant to try a beta version, although I switched to the t version of 1.53 and I appreciate the effort of the programmers to make a bug free program. One in particular I have to add Envelope-to: my@emailaddress Kludges Presence NO As I have my own domain name as well I can have [EMAIL PROTECTED] which a lot of my friends know about and often send stuff to silly names like [EMAIL PROTECTED] which makes filtering a pain in the butt. :) Who has an y good suggestions? I'm also noticing a marked increase in the last year of small scale spaming by individuals, who from the names gathered are trawling certain mailing lists and newsgroups and then inserting a whole bunch of addresses into the CC: field. These I deal with swiftly by forwarding the mail to the relevant ISP/provider and in a lot of cases it has got their email account pulled. I also send a strongly worded (legal sounding, I'm no lawyer :) reply to the originator warning them that any future junk posts from them will charged at £100 per k for wasting my bandwidth and legal fees. While this may not stop those who know it's a bluff it can and has put the wind of God up some amateurs. I've even got sorry replies from two, yes really. I've had this happen on a couple of mailing lists I run at Yahoo Groups and have dealt with it swiftly by banning them, informing Yahoo and their ISP. I also have spam filtering at my main domain host in place which catches most viruses and junk, it never gets as far as my mailbox which came in handy when some bright spark decided to try and mail bomb me. It's a shame that my other two ISP's don't have this. As for other good suggestions. Well this very subject came up on another list and one idea put forward was to feed the spammers each others addresses, which if everyone did correctly and for long enough would render spaming to be a useless exercise. That's the theory. :) -- Best regards, Richard Lane - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Magnum Opus http://www.magnumopus.co.uk -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com

GdV It ... works pretty well except for certain mailing lists I GdV subscribe to ... I have to put filters for these lists ahead of GcV my Spam filter. I use a similar technique that has 4 different types of filters: 1. Messages from Senders in my address book. My address book has a single entry called Mailing Lists that contains, in the E-Mail address(es) field, a list of the Sender addresses of *all* the mailing lists to which I'm subscribed. 2. Messages from mailing lists without a reliable Sender address. This filter contains segments of addresses from mailing lists that either change their Sender address with every message or have a variety of different Sender addresses. Ex: amazon.com, ebay.com, etc. The Sender segments are separated by |, the OR symbol. 3. Messages from identifiable spam Senders. Such messages are routed to Trash. 4. Everything else is sent to a Probably Spam folder. This strategy works very well and is simple to maintain. regards, Andy [Using The Bat! 1.53t under Windows 2000 Pro SP2 on a made from scratch PIII-500 MHz/384 MB RAM] -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com

Multi-part QT's?
Is it possible to create multi-part QT's? I would like to have a template that would look right to users of text-only email clients, but to users of Outlook and Notes would have enriched text. I'm not interested in HTML, just having a couple of frames with .tif logos/addresses and the smooth appearance that Outlook provides. PLEASE don't start an HTML/non-HTML war here. You might want to give that a try! Easy to prevent auto-infection that way. You have to voluntarily open the attachment! I totally agree that this method is totally safe, and *relatively* easy, however: I preview my mail with PopTray (yes, I know The Bat supports it as well), and also run virus protection. When I choose to retrieve messages, I have already taken a number of steps to feel secure in what I'm retrieving. At that point, I prefer that the mail client *not* do the thinking for me, and let me do what I want, which is to view an inline HTML message the way it was designed, with zero extra steps. Despite all of the very good arguments for sending text only messages, there *are* times when I choose to send an HTML message. I purchased The Bat quite a long time ago, and rate it among the very best mail clients out there, however I don't use it with any regularity at all. Why? Because The Bat insists on telling me what's good for me, instead of providing options (not defaults) for HTML composition and true on the fly inline HTML message rendering. At this moment, I'm composing this from Opera 6's e-mail client, because being integrated into the browser, it's so very convenient. Generally though, I use PocoMail. In some ways, it's less powerful than The Bat, but nobody works harder than PocoMail's author at accomodating user requests in the mail client. HTML is nothing new, and despite the wishes of some, it's not going to go away. When The Bat makes the leap into the new world, I will almost certainly use it again, as so much of everything else that it does is virtually perfect. Oh, why did I join the list? Re: Netscape 6 automation
This is an educated guess of an answer Netscape is built around an open source, widely collaborated-upon program called Mozilla, to which Nescape allocates substantial staff hours. I haven't used Netscape 6.x, but I have used the Mozilla browser and mail/newsreader programs on which Netscape 6.1 and 6.2 are based. In Mozilla, what you are trying to do cannot be done. The only way to use the Mozilla--and presumably the Netscape--browser but to have a mailto: link invoke The Bat! is to completely uninstall the browser and related program modules, then reinstall on a custom install. Do not install the Netscape mail/newsreader module. After installation, be sure that TB! is the default mail program (in Win98, Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet Options/Programs), and then be sure that TB!'s support for Simple MAPI is installed (somewhere in the TB! configuration options). At that point, clicking on a mailto: link in Netscape should give you TB! (Note that you can set which TB! account to respond to a mailto: call, or you can leave it unselected and select on the fly.) NS 4.x is coded very differently from 6.x in many respects. (Actually, 6.0 is significantly different from 6.1, too.) Distribution Lists
Howdy Ladies and Gents, I'm quite amazed at the number of TB! users who used to be Pegasus users. I, too, used Pegasus for quite a number of years. I waited ... waited ... waited ... for version 4, only to be disappointed. I started looking around for another EMail client and happened upon TB! As I recall, I didn't even wait for the trial period to expire before I registered the program. I'm quite pleased with the program. Perhaps we should call ourselves FPUNUTB! (Former Pegasus Users Now Using TB!). I just recently signed up for this user's list and I have learned a great deal in the past several days - the hints on SPAM filtering have been quite useful. One thing that Pegasus did quite well, and I just have not discovered the means within TB!, is the capability to send EMail messages to a 'distribution list' without having all the EMail addresses displayed to the recipients. I have two distribution lists that I use once in a while. One list contains about 300 addresses, the other contains about 150 addresses. How can I set these up within TB!? As you mention in your message, this might not be the best place for a blow-by-blow comparison, but certainly trying it is the best way to get a feel for what it can and can't do. Like all software, it's not perfect, but it's earned a place on my best of list, and as I mentioned, I use it as my default mailer. I'm an e-mail client junkie, and I have to say, it seems like combining the best of The Bat, PocoMail, and Mozilla's mail client, would make a heck of an e-mail program. I've been evaluating the betas of PocoMail as well, and I believe Slaven's close to releasing 2.51, which includes a ton of fixes and tweaks to 2.5. It includes the ability to view mail on the server, as well as run rules/filters on mail still on the server. It supports in-line HTML, but allows you the option of retrieving the online content (if that makes sense). Also, like The Bat, it uses no IE components, and supports multiple accounts, sigs, and taglines. It's also skinnable, and includes a fairly full featured scripting functionality. Anyway, give it a look. I want to say, like you, I am a registered user of The Bat, and as I said, I really do think it's among the very best apps out there. But, being the fanatic that I am, I also use PocoMail, Becky, and Mozilla mail. It's not clear whether your names are already in TB! Go to the address book, and File/Import as desired. If that doesn't work, or you need more specific information, let us know. Then create a group in the Address Book. When you compose a message, add the names to the BCC block instead of the TO block. (You might want to enable the BCC in your edit message view, as well.) If your email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and if the name of the Group is, say, GJim's Poker Pals, then put something in the TO block like the following, including the quotation marks: Poker Pals [EMAIL PROTECTED] What will appear to you and to others in the TO block is: Poker Pals JN GJim wrote on Sunday, January 13, 2002: One thing that Pegasus did quite well, and I just have not discovered the means within TB!, is the capability to send EMail messages to a 'distribution list' without having all the EMail addresses displayed to the recipients. -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com

My current Pocomail beta - 2.5.1.999 (haven't checked for a new one in a week or two) is still quite buggy. The *plain text* portion of the message editor, while greatly improved over the past year, is still one of Pocomail's weakest bits. I agree also with the idea of combining the best features and concepts of a few different clients. The three I would really like to see combined would be The Bat!, Becky, and Pocomail. G Despite all of the very good arguments for sending text only G messages, there *are* times when I choose to send an HTML message. Not me, but I see your point. G I see it as an AM vs FM or Mono vs Stereo type thing. LOL! My area. I built radios from scratch, got my share of burned fingers on the tubes, but lost interest when transistors were invented and stopped looking into hardware when they invented the IC. Now: AM and FM are completely different protocols (which would be the up-to-date term, I believe). Stereo radio needs the FM protocol, but AM has other advantages (range, for example. Or simplicity in sending/receiving). Neither AM/FM nor Mono/Stereo have anything to do with security (unless you count that since AM receivers are easier to build, it is also easier to eavesdrop). And speaking of bandwidth, FM can use even smaller bandwidths (IIRC) while maintaining higher sound qualities. I would think that HTML uses 200-300% of the bandwidth of a comparative plain text email, while increasing quality by less than 50% (non-official figure, just my own opinion), and in some cases no better quality at all (AOL, or many messages sent with OE/OL's default settings). Plus, of course, there is this security risk. G I don't *need* stereo to hear the content of a radio program, but G there are cases when it's a richer experience. So at best this way of not sending the pictures with the message spreads the bandwidth, but never saves it, to the contrary I'd say. There are two possibilities: 1) They link to pictures not at their own server, so they parasite somebody else's bandwidth. 2) They're doing something with the hits to the pictures. -- Groetjes, Roelof -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com

However, running it from behind a firewall is a mess... I use SOCKS2HTTP in combination with SocksCap but NO GO! It throws a Winsock Error 0 on me... When i use it plain and enter the Proxyhost it times out... Too bad, too bad... I don't know if it is PocoMail or limitations over here but what i do know is that The Bat works happylie with SocksCap Cheers Ray -- Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Latest Vers: 1.53d FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com
