Because you have activated auto-format. Go to Utilities in the editor

MSG Meanwhile, can anyone tell me what this Inbox-Known is, why I need it,
MSG and how I get rid of it if I don't want it?

Inbox-Known is a special inbox, with a hard coded filter in the
sorting office. The Known-filter is able to check whether senders are
in (a selected part of) your address book. Those recipients are
filtered into inbox-known. It's a filter to have an inbox with mail
that isn't spam for certain. But you can adept it to a filter (just
selecting only a few groups) that puts mail from important contacts
into the known-inbox, so you could have mail with a high and low
priority.
Take care though, that the known-filter is the last one in your
incoming mail filters, so that it doesn't interfere with your other
filters.

You can delete the inbox-known by disabling the known-filter, I did so
and the inbox-known disappeared from view. (Still exists on disk, but
who cares)

POP3.

You're using TB and TB has a bit imperfect IMAP implementation.

IMAP is more suited to a LAN, because you've got to connect to the
server to read your mail (even a second or third time)

Of course IMAP has advantages like being able to read your mail on any
computer (with an imap client), but with the possibilities that TB

 The email load has become too great. Even with threading, the time to

It sounds to good to be true, to have a newsgroup where one downloads
headers in a few seconds and then decide which threads are really
interesting.

I have yet to come on one that really functions as well as these
lists. The Paradox Community has created its own server - for other
reasons - and it is neither as communicative as before nor faster than
a ML. I usually have to try connecting more than two times; I very
often get Connection failed. With the load on the server I'd rather
have an ML.

 Isn't it time we created a newsgroup where messages could be posted
 and read, even retained for a period of time?

I admit this question doesn't come up to often, but it does
frequently. And I am always astonished as to why people asking for a
newsgroup just don't get ahead and create one. then tell us on the
lists, make it known through other channels - there are lots of people
using TB! not being on any TBML - and see what happens.

 Any interest in this?

Not really. I already do read all messages - well, some of them only
get skimmed -, and I always find interesting ideas (not necessarily
TB! related) within threads I wouldn't touch if I'd only see the
header.

BTW, a newsgroup would mean - as Marck himself pointed out in of these
discussions a few months ago - to not use TB! but a news client like
Agent, perhaps even Outlook Express. Any more questions ...?

No hassle with OE? Only when one doesn't pay attention to warnings
about security holes. One of the most frequent tips for being on the

applications connecting the computer to other machines).

And then, what about the automatization processes (like templates)
that TB! offers over OE? Even the interface of OE is much more

Not to forget, his statistics is

a) plain wrong
b) not even naive but stupid.

Consider this: One member of the list asks for advice about a
problem (in quotation marks because I mean it to be the mathematical
term). Now fifty questions come in about the specific task at hand, as
the original post didn't mention enough particulars. after having
re-defined the problem another 50 answers come in. Now we stay at 102
postings. From half of them spring other discussions, some of them TB!
related like I don't like the editor, some of them asking for other
apps like that reminds me, has anyone seen a cheap all-purpose
editor. And then there are the fun posts, Has anybody heard yet,
Stephen Jay Gould died recently

Not to forget meta-discussions like this message.

For the record, I don't think there are as many postings in OE-related
newsgroups (for various reasons). I know for sure that Word newsgroups
have about 200-500 messages per day (all together). Most of them are
really about bugs and difficulties.

Otherwise POP3 is the way to go. Particularly since TB!'s IMAP support

Subject: PTR records

 PS - note the difference between the SMTP Sender's domain and
whether it exists and the IP address of the sending host (which
could be quite different, as in messages from a mailing list).

 I used to block messages from IP addresses that didn't resolve (PTR
lookup) but got too many complaints from people who couldn't mail
us and had no control over their ISP's setup - often big ISPs got
their DNS PTR records  wrong!

 However, we still insist that the SMTP sender domain exists in the
DNS, on the grounds that (auto)replies may not work unless the
domains are correct.

 I think we also insist that header line sender addresses are
resolvable too (again to ensure replies work).

 Cheers,
 Steve

BTW. I didn't activate RDNS for home.worldless.net.

Filter required to download only mail from originators in addressbook.

2002-05-22 Thread Stuart Webb

Hi folks,

As a new comer to Bat, I am making very little progress in configuring
it to filter my email.

Ideally, I would like to configure it to download only the headers of
email on my dial-up ISP's server, then to check the downloaded headers
against originators in my address book and finally, to download the full
text of those emails that that match and place them in a separate folder
before notifying me to log off. The headers that are left will be 99%
spam and after a quick glance through to check for legitimate mail, can
be dealt with manually.

Having read all the bumph and still being not much wiser, is this
possible and how do I go about it.

Yes, but you can only strip all attachments, so if you've got html

DH At the moment the way to do it is far beyond my humble skills, but I
DH am quite sure I've seen such filters on TBTECH some time.

It's not that difficult, just checking for: Content-Type:
multipart/alternative; or text/html both in the kludges. As action
you've got to extract attachments to the trash directory.

Of course you can strip the attachments to directory that's cleared on
a regular base from all html-files, while leaving the alone, but it
still ain't a real html-strip-function. (And not worth the hassle imo)

Seems to me you'd need a 'selective download' filter that would match
the sender to the address book, unfortunately that's no option for
those filters.
The only work around is to manually enter all wanted recipients in the
signal box for the filter, no fun I think.

Another way around this is to download everything, let the
known-filter put all mail from AB-entries in the known-inbox, so you'd
need only check the inbox for spam. Set the properties for the inbox
to max numbers of msg's 1 and to purge and compress on exit, that way
you'll have a clean inbox.
Only downside is you've got to download everything, but I don't know
how heavy your spam-load is.

One could even make this a plug-in so that those who wanted it could have

LW How can I get the Bat! editor to act ~normally~ when I compose a
LW post, or cut paste, etc.?

Because it isn't a 'normal' editor. :-) It works differently. It's a
free caret editor.

LW I mean, why do the scroll bars go; why do cut pastes reformat,
LW etc. etc.

One of it's weaknesses. It has a free caret interface meaning that you
can place your caret even in areas where you didn't type anything. If
your cursor ends up more than a page away from where you last inserted
a character, the scroll-bar will not be present. You can do this by
simply opening a new message and using the arrow key to move the
cursor downwards until text flows off the screen. No scroll-bar
appears. Right? Now hit the spacebar to insert a space character. The
scroll-bar appears.

Of course, if a scroll-bar has already appeared because you've typed
more than a window page of text, then the scroll-bar will already be
there and the problem will not exist.

LW Why can't life be simple?

:-) I'd really love for you to go into a different mode. One where you
wonder why TB!'s editor behaves the way it does and how it can be used
to your advantage.

I find TB!'s editor to be excellent for use in the context of e-mail
formatting. It took me a little time to become accustomed to it but I
find it akin to learning a different language. I have no problem using
other editors and word processors since I know how they work as well
and just slip into the relevant mode.

TB!'s editor has some text reflowing capabilities that you'll only
find in highly specialised text editors (certainly not in any other
Windows e-mail client's editor). It shows you the exact formatting
that the recipient will receive when they get your message, something
that most other Windows clients fall woefully short on.

There are also some other very nifty capabilities like column vs
stream vs linear text selection modes, the ability to indent whole
text blocks and paste text indented. I find myself firing up SmartBat
for these abilities needed outside the context of e-mail. :-)

I'm not saying that TB!'s editor is perfect either, but there's a lot
to it that isn't initially appreciated.

Mising Quick Text after move

I've just moved all The Bat's mail files from a network drive to a
local drive (the program files remained where they were). The Quick

are present.

I can open these files in a text editor and copy/paste to set up the

 One big disadvantage for me would be that I'd have to check the
 news server regularly and I'd have to put up with Gravity if I wanted
 to prevent this. Argh! Don't forget that participants would have to
 find a news reader and learn how to use it when they're already
 learning to use TB!. It just seems wrong to put TB! aside to read a
 discussion list about it.

Understood. I can see the ideas of not using TB! to read about TB!...
kind of defeats the whole purpose of TB! in general.

 While I doubt that I'd be gone if a newsgroup were to be started, I
 don't particularly agree with it though it's a free world of course
 and anyone who wishes to start a news group can do so as was done
 with these groups. :-)

As my original idea said... it'd not replace the mail list... in fact
it'll just be the mail list, but passed onto a news server. Any posts
that hit the lists, get dropped into the news server, and any news
postings get posted back to the list. There'd be no change in
bandwidth usage for list owner (after all, it acts just like another
email address), and the news server will sustain the same amount of
data as the list.

I'd be happy to look into it *only* if there is enough interest in the
idea... and based on what a lot of you guys seem to be saying, there
appears to be very little interest in it. I'm looking into a similar
system for the company I work for, we'll be setting up our help list
into a news server, while maintaining the mail list. So I'm already
going to be halfway in the area of what I mentioned.

Storing Sent Mail

2002-05-22 Thread Graeme J Hosking

Hi,

  I've been using The Bat! for a couple of days now, and very
  impressive it is too! However there is one feature from my (now ex)
  favorite mail client, VA, that I'm missing.

  VA would store an outgoing reply in the same folder as the original
  message. This meant that the conversation threads nicely for you.
  However, The Bat! will insist on storing outgoing mail in Sent
  Mail. As a big mail threading fan I don't like this much. What I
  would like is for any replies to be placed in the folder that
  contains the original.

  Why not use filters I hear you cry? Well, for some of my mail I have
  done this by moving outgoing messages to the Inbox, and letting my
  incoming rules sort the mail. Unfortunately some of my mail has to
  be sorted by hand, so any replies will sit in my Inbox until I
  manually sort those as well.

  Anybody know how I might achieve this, with filters or options I
  might have missed? I did a quick search of the list archives but
  found nothing (apologies if I've just missed them).

  Thanks,

  Graeme.

  Actually The Bat! insists on very little as it is so
  completely customizable.

  By default TB! sends msgs to Sent Mail but you might also
  have TB! filter your sent mail for headers send them
  back to their original folders. And just to be safe, you
  can have TB! send all your outgoing mail to a backup text
  file on some other medium beyond your HD.

I'm a user, just like you. So I haven't any idea where RITlabs wants
to go with TB. But the setup of TB is such that IMNSHO it doesn't make
much sense to have much emphasis on IMAP.

TB is about collecting mail and processing it automatically into
folders, responders, etc. To do so effectively with IMAP you'd need to
copy every filter to every copy of TB, otherwise their use would be
fairly limited.

With IMAP you need to do the processing on the server and the only
thing you need a mua for is to access the processed mail and some
manual operations. That is if you want to process the mail
consistently. Therefor it would be a waste of resources to develop the
IMAP of TB any further.

The advantage to process the same mail twice (via POP3) at two
locations (home and office) is that your interests at both places may
differ strongly. So it would make sense to use two different sets of
filters.

You could play with folder identities and filter on the peculiars of

and you'll have an incoming and an outgoing filter for that folder,
your replies can be filtered and as a bonus return replies are
addressed to that name, so you can filter them straightaway to the

  Could a message header not be created by a template that
  contains a unique code for each folder? I've looked through the
  macros a little and there does not seem to be an obvious (to me,
  that is) way of adding custom headers in a template.

  The only viable alternative to a custom header that I could see was
  to hi-jack the comment header for this purpose. Would this be a
  disgraceful abuse of such a header? I don't honestly think I've seen
  a mail client that uses this header, but I'm no mail expert.

Changing Account Parameters Quickly

I frequently change my account parameters because I often
use SSH as my l4 tunnel to retrieve email and effect
intranet access. I find it, however, cumbersome to have to
go into my account properties to change the account
parameters for several accounts everytime.

Needless to say, I am interested in figuring a way to do
this a little more seamlessly which leads me to the
question:

Is there a file I can manipulate to make this change
quickly? Or can I set the parameters and name that config file
normal and then change the account settings and then rename the
config file to on-ssh, so everytime I want to change
settings I can just run a batch file to copy one of the two
files to the config file? Thanks.

Yes, you could use the comment header by means of a folder template.

No, it's a comment header and that comment doesn't have to make sense

out how to copy a message, instead of Move. But it was there. Once I set
the folder to Copy to, I found Bat had changed the folder to Move to to
the same thing! So, bug if you want to move and copy. And if you just

marked as read though it was indicated not to do so.

A killfile prevents showing some messages a server or mailbox contains.

It depend on your interpretation. The CC's receive the mail but it is not
directed at them specificly. I would like a CC option next to
recipient in the filters because it's a separate header.

JA As for the BCC not matching, it shouldn't. The
JA servers/mail client don't add a recipient tag (like To/CC), but it has

That's what I expected. 1 out of 2 right.

The advanced filtering is for the message list. It is used to filter

Another of TB!'s nice features. It's certainly not a kill-filter
system. You need to visit the sorting office filters for this.

Auto-format and Smart Bat

2002-05-22 Thread Ricardo M. Reyes

yesterday I started to use Auto-Format and since then I notice that
the Smart Bat uses it also, although it's not checked in it's
utilities menu.

I don't mind that the auto format is ON in the smart bat, but the
problem is that if I open it and type write away, the new text
magically goes to the end of the previous line (the one with the dashes
and the time) and it get's REALLY annoying. It takes way the advantage
of the smart bat of open and write

Is it clear? I'm not sure how to describe it.

Is there any way to have independent settings between the message
editor and the smart bat? I think I like the auto-format in the
editor, but definitely not in the SB.

Sorting and Navigation Issues

2002-05-22 Thread Chris Montgomery

Hello TheBatUsers,

  As a new user to TB, I'm having a time trying to figure out how
  sorting and navigation work together. For example, I like to view
  messages by subject, but in a creation date/time ascending order. If
  I sort by subject in a folder, the creation date/times are in
  mixed order by their creation date/time.

  This creates havoc when reading thru a thread of messages with the
  same subject. What would really be nice is if we had the ability to
  do a sort on a second-level column, like Outlook allows. For
  example, I could then do a primary sort by subject, then a secondary
  sort by created date (ascending or descending).

  Is this already possible in TB and I'm just not seeing how to do it?

  Before anyone yells use Threading by reference!, I have and find it even more
  frustrating. Deleting a message or navigating to next or previous
  message using the toolbar buttons or shortcut keys seem to be an
  almost random experience. Messages in unrelated threads open. Has
  anyone else experienced this, or is it just me?

  Another thing that would be nice is if when opening a message in a
  separate viewing window that window could then inherit the same
  display/sorting/threading views as the message list window. Any
  thoughts on that?

  In all, I'm finding TB to be a very good email client, but as
  someone mentioned in another post, it takes awhile for the new user
  to get used to its power and flexibility. There is a big learning
  curve and this list does a great job to supplement the marginal
  documentation.

  Cheers.

   Easier way to do this with a lot of email address is make a group in

   You can filter against presence in this addressgroup in de advanced

~~~
I suspect that you've missed something because TB has the most
powerful filtering of any MUA that I've encountered. If you're trying
to create a filter that automatically sends messages from particular
senders to Trash, try this:
1. From the Account menu, choose Sorting Office/Filters
2. Select Incoming Mail
3. Click New
4. Give the filter a name (e.g. KillFile)
5. In Move message to folder, enter the Trash folder
6. Set up the filter so that the Strings=the sender's email address;
   Location=Sender; Presence=Yes
7. Click the Actions tab, then click Mark the message as read
You can add several email addresses to this kill file by entering
the second and subsequent addresses in the Alternatives tab.
Also, check through the list of actions that you can perform -- you'll
see that you can also delete the message and a whole lot more.
Hint: You can scroll down most of the tabs of the Sorting Office to
get at a wealth of options.
