So long.
Hi List. In my experience, this list has been by far, the most professional, most enjoyable, most helpful, and most informative mailing list I've been a subscriber to. Thanks for easing the pain. Unfortunately, even you all can't make up for current events. So, I installed Thunderbird, and ran filters (filters!) on my IMAP inbox without trouble. I was giddy. From my current perspective, it is a pleasingly boring program. And to quote Glen Frey, I'm already gone. Thanks again, you all are a great group. folder to hold 100 most recent messages?
Hi List, Is there a way to have a folder hold the 100 most recent list messages, and move the older messages to another folder? The reason is that I use IMAP, and I would like to have an IMAP folder to provide access to the most recent posts so I can view them from anywhere, but I don't want the folder to grow too big, since my IMAP space is limited. Therefor, I'd like to move older messages (100 messages old, or one week old, for example) to a local folder as needed. -- Chris Using The Bat! v2.13 Lucky Beta/6 on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 4 Current version is 2.12.00 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Bayesit training - how long before results?
Hi List, I installed bayesit 0.5.5 about a week ago. I trained it up on the folder of junk mail I had collected, and on the non-junk. Then every morning, I do a manual 'mark as junk'. To date, my junk folder contains 1667 messages. The total from my non-junk folders is about 3000. Here is some info from the plugin: Spam frequency dictionary: ° C:\...\spamdict.bye ° Size: 1656 letters. ° Capacity: 78445 words. Non-spam frequency dictionary: ° C:\...\nspamdict.bye ° Size: 559 letters. ° Capacity: 29118 words. Current active base: ° Active current base contains 16901 words. ° Status: OK Last day statistic General numbers ° Spam traffic (bytes): 0 ° Spam letters: 0 ° NON-spam traffic (bytes): 106070 ° NON-spam letters: 4 ° Total traffic (bytes): 106070 ° Total letters: 4 Bayesit has yet to find a junk message on its own. Re[2]: messages marked as junk to separate folder
Hi Stuart, already marked as read. Junk mail that is sent to the folder by baysit can be left as unread, so you only have to quickly check your unread junk mail to check if baysit has mis-classified Great idea. messages marked as junk to separate folder
Hi List, I am training bayesit, and I would like to be able to send messages that are manually marked as junk to some folder of my choosing, while messages that are automatically marked as junk are sent to a different folder. One of these folders could be the default Junk mail folder. The reason for this is that until I'm comfortable with Bayesit's performance, I would like to be able to quickly check messages that were marked by the plugin, and not have to wade through all of the messages I marked myself (I won't know the difference anyway). Also, I can then keep the plugin's target folder empty, and use the message count as a quick way of knowing if I need to check. Maybe some other way (eg. colors) of distinguishing between the two types of junk would be better? It would seem that if I could do more than one action with a 'shortcut key', this would be trivial, but I can't see how to do this. Managing IMAP messages
Hi List, I recall this topic being discussed. However, I did a folder maintenance maneuver recently that seems to have corrupted my TBUDL folder. Many messages are no longer viewable, so I can't read the thread. So, I'd like to 'reset' the delete tag on all of the messages in my inbox. I haven't purged anything in a long time, so I'm sure that the messages are still there. Has this ability been implemented? It's no problem to use the web interface on my mail server, but why bother if TB! can do it. Also, what files are delete-able, with respect to TB!'s message base structure? I was training Bayesit and it said it found some messages that were bad, and suggested that I delete one of TB!'s files, but I don't remember which one. Thanks alot. -- Chris Using The Bat! v2.13 Lucky Beta/5 on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 4 Current version is 2.12.00 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: IMAP Mail Not Loading.
Hi 9Val, Which synchronization method do you use? Are those messages huge? What says connection centre about your IMAP session? With earlier versions (including 2.12 and previous), I could reliably cause this problem by activating a filter, either manually or on new-mail arrival. The most recent beta does not cause it, although automatic filtering does not occur consistently. Hi Roelof, The values for Gender are: 0=unknown 1=Male 2=Female This reminded me of something I have noticed but never addressed. I have the names in my address book displayed with last name first, so I can easily sort them. But if I start a new message to someone, TB uses this format (the Display Name I assume) in the To: field. How can I set up my template so that a normally formed name is displayed? 2 TB! entries in Add/Remove programs list
Hi List, I was in the process of uninstalling a program, and I noticed that there are 2 entries in my installed programs list for The Bat!. The first uses the TB icon, and the second uses a normal-looking windows folder icon. They are both listed as having the same size. The entry with the TB icon has a single button, saying change/remove, and the second entry has two buttons, one (enabled) saying change the other (disabled) saying remove. I cautiously clicked the change button, and I got a setup wizard offering to modify, repair or remove TB from my system. I cancelled. Why two entries? Re[3]: IMAP Inbox STUCK!!!
Hi List, I have yet to know if the message base has gone wrong, as is usual. . Confirmed. The previous message I sent could not be moved to the sent mail folder, because of some kind of corruption to the message base. New mail was no longer retrieved, although the unread mail number in the folder view remained accurate. No message bodies were viewable. However, as usual, creating a new account fixed the problem, indicating that the corruption was local (thankfully). -- Chris Using The Bat! v2.12 Beta/6 on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 4 Current version is 2.11.02 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Checking IMAP Accounts
Hi List, My IMAP folders are not acting up nearly as much these days, but I'm still having some trouble. One account has stopped retrieving new messages, although the correct number shows up in the folder view (under the unread heading, it right now shows 28*). I have been playing with settings, so I have no idea what may be wrong. I can always create a new account (that has worked in the past), but I would like to figure out why its not working. As I troubleshoot, it has become clear that I lack some basic knowledge about what TB! is doing. What, exactly, is synchronization? My guess would be that, as an example, if changes are made to a folder (not by my copy of TB!), including the arrival of new incoming mail, those changes would not show up on my copy of TB! unless I synchronize. If I set it to synchronize, the new is not retrieved. In account settings, I can set TB! to 'check mail' periodically under the options tab, but the new mail is not retrieved when manipulating this setting either. And in the IMAP fine-tune tab, I can set it to 'when online, refresh folders' periodically as well. Still nothing. Then if I right-click a folder in the folder view, I can set various 'synchronization' settings. Is it that the 'refresh folders' setting indicates the frequency of synchronization? While no permutation of these settings seems to retrieve my new mail, I am not so much looking for suggestions on how to resolve the problem (creating a new account will work), as detailed information on what the various settings are intended for. v2.11, IMAP auto-filtering
Hi List, At the request of the list moderators (because of x-header conflicts with this list's software), I had to change the email address I used for the list, my only alternative being to one that only supported IMAP. This was quite a pain, because TB! did not auto-filter incoming IMAP mail. I had particular trouble manually filtering, which would cause duplicate messages to be created that would not allow themselves to be deleted, and severe message base corruptions (and lost email) that were not fixable (at least not by me). So, I was relegated to manually dragging new TBUL messages to my TBUL folder for many weeks. This has been aweful. Needless to say, I have eagerly awaited v2.11. I upgraded immediately. I am disappointed. My filters still don't work. Nothing seems to happen automatically. At least manual filtering does not cause the message base corruption problems I experienced with earlier versions. Instead, nothing happens (other than that the log is updated). Here is an exerpt from the log, incurred by manual filtering: 6/2/2004, 09:40:25: FILTER - Message from Mary Bull, subject Re: New TB! release June 1, 2004, size 3,609 bytes filtered (processed by TBUL), URL: msgid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ...But the message is NOT moved to the destination folder. Hi Batters, I have several email accounts. Sometimes, when I click on the inbox of an account, TB! will select an email that is way down the list, several months old, and definitely not the email I was last looking at. In this case, I have to scroll to the top of the list of emails to read any new mail. Other times, when I click on the inbox, a new, (previously) unread message is selected and displayed automatically. This can be confusing, and I sometimes search for the unread mail before I realize that it is no longer unread. Is there a setting to control this behavior? Re[5]: Junk plug-in
Hi Gunivortus, It seems MANY batters *are* successfully using Bayesit as a plug-in. I (and at least 1 other batter) have seen our bats not starting until we either reinstall TB *or* del/rename the c:\Bayesit directory. (Fully re4peatable procedure.) GG I had some problems too in the beginning, one of them was the c:\Bayesit GG directory. After I used c:\Program Files\Bayesit it ran. But don't ask GG me why! :-) The newest version of Bayesit! (v0.4em) has fixed the problem of TB! not starting. Keyboard macro for junk mail
Hi Batters, I would like to set a key sequence (alt-j preferable) that does 3 things: 1 marks the selected messages as junk (available in the specials pulldown) 2 marks the selected messages as read 3 moves those messages to the junk folder I have the Bayesit plugin installed, and when messages are not recognized as junk, I must do these to tasks. The junk mail folder created by the plugin (or by TB! to deal with the output of the plugin, maybe) would be the target. How do I accomplish this? Re[2]: The Bat! v2 Upg Price of $17.50 until October 31, then what?
Hi Alexander, I use The Bat! since May '99 and for four years we got MAJOR enhancements for free. If some other company has produced the Bat, the very same program with the same feature set would be in version 4 or 5 and not 2.00.6. Believe me 1.60 was a major upgrade to 1.50 which was a major upgrade to 1.40 and so forth. A If that is so then what, in the name of everything that doesn't suck, A would've been the problem to say registered before 1.50 release = high A update fee while registered before 1.60 release = moderate upgrade fee A and registered after 1.60 release = lower upgrade fee? The rationale here I think is that it is a smaller jump from 1.6 to 2.0, and therefor you shouldn't pay as much? But this thinking is the reason that Microsoft NEVER releases any updates, short of bug fixes. Anything new is squirreled away for a couple of years, until a new version comes out. The point is that what you suggest would encourage that. Why bother releasing new features as minor updates if you people are going to then complain that 2.0 is not much different than 1.6? You are just going to shoot yourself in the pocketbook. Better to keep 1.0 out forever, release bug fixes as .01 and .02 revisions, and keep all the new features for 2.0. Then you can charge everyone 75% of the full price for the upgrade...insert MS business plan here. I believe it is Microsoft's way of doing business that sucks. Ritlabs, while not exactly scoring a 10, is doing what they can to make some money, which is difficult. I do agree that the 2-month cutoff is a bad idea. -- Caio, Christopher Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm using The Bat! v2.00.6 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Current version is 2.00 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: The Bat! v2 Upg Price of $17.50 until October 31, then what?
Hi Jamie, A And what a lot of people are overseeing is that the v2 license is not one A person but one computer. So, if you're using TB on your laptop and your A home computer, you need another full license AFAIK. JD I don't know about this, although it seems to be standard practice for JD most software companies Before I registered for the first time, I emailed RitLabs, asking if it was ok to put one license on my laptop and desktop (My question was about the synchronize feature, which led to 'do I need 2 licenses to use it'). They assured me it was within the licensing agreement to do so. I would tend to agree with the following statement: Give these guys a break. I would have gladly paid $17.50 for a maintenance contract on v1, but I didn't need to - the upgrades were free! Writing and selling software myself, I can Sympatize. Documentation, for example, unbelievably time consuming to keep updated. I say, give'em the benefit of the doubt, they aren't out to bite our hands, they just haven't documented their intentions very well. -- Caio, Christopher Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm using The Bat! v2.00.6 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Current version is 2.00 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

TB!2 Spam plugins
Hi Blasters (Bat list users), May I be so bold as to suggest a discussion on spam plugins? There has been much traffic on the subject, and I have been following it, but there hasn't been much good, decipherable info. Some download links have not worked, other have, but link to progs that haven't worked, or seem to be in pre-alpha stages of development at best. The following questions are what I'm particularly interested in, and I'll bet many others would find the answers to be quite helpful too. Are there any free Bayesian plugs that work? Links? Those of us who are using a spam plugin, which are you using? How does it compare to others? free/how much? Links? Should I expect to have to pay for a decent spam Plugin? Personally, I would prefer something that simply sorted incoming mail to different folders (e.g., inbox vs. spam folders), as opposed to blockers that don't download mail at all. Until a certain level of trust develops between me and my plug, I'd like the chance to look over it's shoulder. Perhaps a vote on the best plugin? Best free/best overall? -- Caio, Christopher Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm using The Bat! v2.00 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Current version is 2.00 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[5]: Spam [SOT]
Hi All, -Only slightly off topic- T solution. My client chose not to do business with them. My client was T adamant about the way business should be conducted and in his mind, it T didn't include C/R. Quote from him - They just told me I wasn't T important. I have just had a similar experience with Ritlabs/cifnet. I originally registered TB! on Aug 27, and was interested to find out if I would receive a free upgrade to 2.0. I emailed ritlabs, only to have my email returned, stating that SpamCop has determined that my mail server is a known originator of spam. Same with an email to cifnet. This was extrememly frustrating, because I had no recourse. I simply couldn't contact either company by email. I, of course, have never spammed anyone in my life, but I am on a shared web host, and apparently one of their clients was the culprit. My host took quick steps for me, but this did little to change the fact that I couldn't send email to ritlabs. Someone from spamcop replied to my whining, stating that there wasn't anything that could be done. Sounds like a great service. They are happy to block my email, but 'there's nothing that can be done' to unblock it. Fortunately for me, cifnet is in Chicago, where I am. So a local call did the trick. But the point stands. -- Caio, Christopher Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm using The Bat! v2.00 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Current version is 2.00 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[4]: Killing The Bat! without damaging it
Hello Michael, MT Am I alone in thinking that the origional message below the sig MT delimiter just looks horrible, and impossible to read? Let alone the MT problems in replying to a message laid out like that. Here you go. :) Seriously, I laid out the template that way because I hadn't realized that TB! prints everything below the delimiter in a light color that is harder to read. I use it for when I want to include the person's text for reference, or as a courtesy (so they don't have to go digging for what they said), but don't feel that her text is necessary to get my point. This way, it is out of the way, she doesn't have to scroll down passed what she wrote to find my reply (annoying if her text is extended), and my sig is not simply tacked onto the end (i.e., all of the new info is at the top, and the older info is at the bottom for reference). As I said, I didn't realize that it was displayed in a lighter, less legible text. Re: the abort button, it works perfectly for me every time, even when the network connection has been lost. Hi List, I did a cursory search of the archives, and the answer to my question doesn't seem promising. Is there a way to automatically view mime attachments? I'm really frustrated with clicking. Although, the way TB! handles the list's digest is nice, bringing up a new message window. TB! 1.62r Also, what will happen if I click Install The Bat! as the simple MAPI request handler? Specifically, what I would like to do is have an application be notified by TB! when a particular type of email arrives. Can it do that?
