Hello MFPA,

This is based on the method suggested to me on this list 2 or 3 years
 ago by MAU.

Thanks for the acknowledgement, but I got the idea (if not the exact
method) from someone else. It's too bad I don't remember who from,
though. :-(

My All Outgoing - Archive it filter has the condition Any message
and the action Copy to the folder \\Archived_Messages\Sent Mail
(You should not need to tick Automatically create if necessary if you
are copying to the Sent Mail folder in the Archive account as that
folder will have been created when you created the new account.)

On the Options tab, it is ticked as active

On the Share with tab in the sorting office, all the accounts I wish
to archive sent messages from are ticked

And just to make sure I understand this correctly: I
don't have to be signed in to the Archive account, for
all these settings to work, right?

Correct. The messages will still be moved/copied to the Archive
account but TB! will not waste time and resources loading the message
base for the folders in that account unless you sign into it.

For the setting up process, I did have to sign in. Otherwise the
account didn't show up as an option in the list to copy messages to.

If you are not signed into a password-protected account, it does not
show up in the list to copy to. You can just type into the box but why
introduce the possibility of error for the sake of signing into an
account?  (-;

Ticking Use folder specific deletion settings is needed so that the
deletion options are available to use. You then specify what those
settings are. The messages more than your stated number of days old
will be purged from the folder and you want them moved to an archive
folder, not put in trash or simply deleted.

You could put the destination folder for your archived messages under
normal deletion instead of under alternative deletion and not tick
Use alternative deletion for purging this folder. Then any message
you selected and hit DELETE (without SHIFT) would be archived as well.
Depends on what behaviour you want - I probably would forget to press
SHIFT when deleting, so I'd end up archiving some spam as well.

This depens on the Performance of the System, in earlier times i once
imported 65000 Mails which has been famous this time and TB worked
slow but still working.

Today i see that in the Virtual Machine i should not have more than
1000 Mails in one Folder, specially the Inbox should be very small.

I move and sort all Messages to Folders and the most slow Folder ist
the OLDmail Folder with 5000 Mails (Backup every some month).

I think you could play around with it, if your System is a newer one i
would expect it to work without breaks with around 1 Mails in one
Folder (i am talking about an actual Core-Duo 2000/3000 MHz with 3 Gb

I would suggest instead to archive them within TB! in a
password-protected archive account(s). That way, they are always
easily to hand when you are using TB! but never actually get loaded
unless you enter the password to go into the archive account.

This is based on the method suggested to me on this list 2 or 3 years
ago by MAU.

- Archived_Messages account duplicates the folder tree structure of my
main account. Actually, it just duplicates the folder I want to
archive.

- In the Properties/General of each of the folders of my main account
that I want to archive, I tick the option 'Keep messages in the base
for (days)' and enter the number of days.

- In Properties/Deletion, I tick the 'Use folder specific deletion
settings' option.

- Then, for 'Alternative deletion' I select 'Move to the specified
folder' and, of course, I browse to select the corresponding folder in
the 'Archived_Messages account'.

- And also tick the box for 'Use alternative deletion for purging this
folder'.

- And in the Properties/Additional tab under on exit I tick both
Remove old messages and compress the folder.

As I have said, I do this for each the folder I want to archive. Now,
when every night I close down TB!, the 'old messages' in each folder
are automagically moved to the corresponding folder in the
Archived_Messages account.

What's the benefit of doing this? Well, as I said at the beginning,
the Archived_Messages account is password protected. When you start
TB, it will not open any password protected account and 'waste time'
in opening each of it folders. Only when I need to find an archived
message will I select my Archived_Messages account, enter the password
and open it.

One other thing I do to easily remember which folders I have set up for
'automatic archiving' is to assign these folders to an 'Archive Colour
Group' (blue in my case). This way, I can easily see in my folder tree
which folders have an corresponding archive one.

If your sent messages live in the default Sent Mail folders, a
slightly different strategy is needed because the Sent Mail folders
don't have half of the required options available in their
Properties dialogue. To get around this, I simply have a common
outgoing filter that copies all outgoing messages to the Sent Mail
folder in my Archived_Messages account. The original account sent
mail folders are set to keep messages for N days and to remove old
messages and compress on exit.

My Archived_Messages account contains over 120,000 messages and sits
at 2.15 GB with no performance hit on TB!

TB lagging?

2009-08-28 Thread Susanne
Hi,

I've noticed this ever since I upgraded to version
4 and it's not a constant problem, but often
enough that it's really annoying.
When I switch from one message to the next, or
from one folder to another, or hit delete (or
pretty much any command), it can take up to 10
seconds before TB responds.

It's gotten to the point where I'm so frustrated
with this, that I'm contemplating another email
client, and I've been happy with TB for ages
(since version 1).

No other programs on my pc are affected, this
can happen even when cpu usage is at 2%, and I have
no other programs open.

Could it be a software conflict, and if it is, how
do I track it down without uninstalling
everything else?

Sure! Send it on over! *g*

I've ruthlessly thrown out a bunch of mail that
I'll most likely never miss (am an email pack rat,
apparently) and things seem a bit speedier.
Or maybe it's just one of the good phases right
now.

Is there actually a limit to how many messages TB
can hold without getting slowed down?

FWIW, when you get that (not responding) tag in the Task Manager, it
means that that specific process isn't processing events the way that
Windows is designed to do. I encounter it from time to time on my old
Win98SE systems, usually from my browser (Opera 9), but I believe that the
actual culprit is the o/s itself, which is attempting to do a disk read and
has disabled interruption during what's supposed to be a very short time
but which is actually stretching out to several minutes instead of only a
few microseconds. The large number of reads required by your huge mail
folders can certainly increase the odds of this happening, but it's also
possible that your hard disk is preparing for forced retirement in the not
too distant future!

It's not the number of messages but the size, if I am not mistaken.

Also I had the same problem with one folder, and no amount of deleting
and compacting worked. I created another folder, copied all messages
over from within TB!, exited TB! and deleted the messages.tbb and
.tbi, and reopend TB!. Then copied the messages back.

Another problem might be cause by your anti-virus scanner: When you
access a big file (like messages.tbb) it gets scanned on-access and
that takes time. So, you can exclude the mail folder from the
on-access scan.

Oh, and the limit for messages.tbb is 2 GB. TB! will send you a
warning when you come close to that size. There should be no reason to
have 2 GB worth of mail in one folder.

I sure hope not, since this is a fairly new
computer, but if it happens, I'll have daily
back-ups.

Since it's only TB that is having problems, I
suspect it has more to do with the large number of
mails I keep.

I'll see if my clean-up action has a lasting
effect!

I'll check into that and see if my free AVG has

No warnings yet, but I've whittled things down
quite a bit and will watch how it goes.
