That's standard behaviour with re-filtering. When you're re-filtering

If the message actually contains the images (with proper references in the
HTML part) the Bat would display them. In your case it is likely that the
message doesn't actually include the images but they need to be fetched to
be displayed. To do that you need your browser.

In contrast to other mail programs the Bat does not have a real web
browser included. Whether this is good or bad is debatable. Most users
prefer this behavior because it makes the Bat invulnerable to all the
undesired side-effects of HTML messages (scripting virii, web bugs, etc.;
more about web bugs can be found under

Yes if they are in line images i.e. sent with the email.

SS If I open up the message.hml page in internet explorer it displays the
SS pics.

This means that the images have not been sent with the email but are
resident on a server some where out there. It is a wonderful way for
spamers to confirm that your email is active. So I hape that The Bat! never
does this (or at least you can switch it off).

Adressbooks disappear in Network

2002-01-11 Thread Ralf Heinl

Hello,

I use TB 1.53 and have the problem in the network:

Several TCP/IP-Clients have groups of adressbooks - but they don't
want it.

I.e.: if User A boots its machine, User B has only one adressbook
in TB - the adressbook of User A and its own adressbook is no more
there.

After User B has made a reboot, both, User A and User B have
only one Adressbook available - the Adressbook of User B.

Now User A can manually open its own Adressbook but after a reboot
User A has only its own. If User B boots, then User A again has
only the adressbook of User B.

The winner is always who bootet as last user.

Is there a (registry)key to fix the adressbook per User/Workstation?

Thank you

DLL intialization failure

2002-01-11 Thread Geoff Lane

Using The Bat! v1.53d on Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 6

I have a problem that TB may (or may not) be causing. If this isn't
down to TB, please accept my apologies for an OT post -- but I will be
grateful for any help offered.

Every so often, all my open program windows disappear and I get an
error message with the title ntdvm.exe - DLL initialization failed
and the message text Initialization of the dynamic link library
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\KERNEL32.DLL failed. The process is terminating
abnormally. If I click the OK button in the message box, my system
appears to return to normal.

This error occurs shortly after TB connects to my mailserver to
download. That said, I have a frequent connection schedule, so this
could be coincidence. For the last few days, I've had five or six of
these errors each day.

Searching through the Microsoft Knowledgebase shows a similar error
can occur with USER32.DLL initialization -- and the KB suggests a
Registry hack to fix the issue (the hack has already been applied to
my machine, probably by one of the NT service packs). FWIW, I've done
a complete system scan for viruses and Norton Antivirus 2001 (updated
as of last night) reports no viruses found.

Any ideas?

TIA,

This has an effect on how selection will be done.

Select some text in a mail you're about to edit/write.
Preferably multi lined but e.g. starting in line one, position 10 and
ending in line XX not at the end but maybe at half of the line.

Change the mode from 'Stream' to 'Line'.
You'll see a significant difference :-)

Now change it to 'Column' ... Another great possibility is discovered
:-)

Stream should be the normal setting as this is the 'common behavior'
in Windows programs (let's not discuss again 'bout 'common' and/or
'normal', Dierk, Thomas; OK? *SCNR*) but the other two can be useful
too as I experienced (at least Column already was used, Line I wasn't
able to find a use for *g*)

Block mark occurs in whole line units rather than normal (stream) or
block (column) mode. Wherever you start or finish marking within a
line, the line will be marked from beginning to end.

choosing an e-mail address from contacts

2002-01-11 Thread sbsi lists

Hello ,

When adding someone in my address book, I can allow them to have many
different e-mail accounts. Now, when I choose them when sending a
message, how do I pick one of the alternate addresses?

For instance, in Outlook2k (not 2002!), I used to be able and
right-mouse click on a user and pick a different e-mail account if
they had one.

I do see that I can have the multiple addresses added to the BCC but
then I'd have to remove the one in the TO FIELD (which is the defaulted one
or the first one in the list of e-mail accounts) and then would have
to copy/paste from the other choices there's got to be something
easier/better and I just haven't figured it out yet!!

What's the secret in TB!?
I don't have to create multiple contacts in the address book for each e-mail, do I?

That's two different things to be done.

Checking for free space is easy: go to the harddrive windows is
installed on and check the free space in your file explorer.
This should be a sufficient value. I'd assume everything below 100
MByte as 'to small' (others may disagree, that's my humble opinion).

For 'Kill dupes' there is not as much free space on harddisk necessary
as for compressing the folder as lesser data will be copied
temporarily.

As far as I can see (with anything from 0 to the current 30,000 messages
in TB!) there is no performance hit, in basic use, as far as I can see,
and no crashing irrespective of the size of the message base. This is a
remarkable achievement, and a rare one for Windows packages (which tend
to progressively collapse as more and more is stuffed into them) :)

Of course, things like searches, which may have to traverse the entire
folder tree, slow down as the message base gets bigger, but nothing can
be done about that.

I archive to CD-RW each night and to CD-R about every 50,000 messages or
so, but this is solely to keep the message base a manageable size for
myself.

What I do when I want to clear out TB! is a complete backup (Tools |
Backup) to CD-R then delete the contents of each folder by hand*.

I don't know if you're already doing, but you can easily delete the

Pretty much easier than selecting all messages and deleting manually,

I don't know if you're already doing, but you can easily delete the

Pretty much easier than selecting all messages and deleting manually,

Re: HTML Problems.../Forwarded E-mail Problems

I am wondering how i get the bat to display the pictures from an html
e-mail? If I open up the message.hml page in internet explorer it
 displays the pics.

As already mentioned twice, but now in different words, the only way for
TB! to display the pictures in the email is if the person who wrote it
sends the pictures with the email. Most people don't do this because it
makes the message larger, so instead they put the HTML code in the
message to get the image from a website somewhere.

Also is their anyway to make the batdisplay the
whole e-mail like iexplorer? I get alot of fowarded e-mail's that have
been forwarded from people to people and I have to open like the
message.msg then again inside the message and so forth until i get to
the main meaagse. Thanks in Advance, Scott (Using The Bat 1.54/Beta
 26)

The only way to fix this is to tell the person who forwarded you the
message to change their Email Settings to Forward as Inline instead of
Forward as Attachment. Then that person has to tell who forwarded
them the message, and so on and so on. Netscape's default is Forward as
Attachment, so when I receive forwards from people using Netscape, I
always ask them to change it.

Often times people don't know what their own email program is doing (how
often do you send yourself email?). So they appreciate being told.

For some reason it isn't supplied on the Windows CD (even XP) or with an

That's all nice values, but not mentioning _hard disk space_.
I'll stand corrected if you say 'physical memory' is what I meant as
'hard disk space'. But this is quite impossible as with 1 GB hard disk
you couldn't have used nearly 2,4 GB paging file.

So can you simply open a file explorer, focus 'C:\' (assuming your
windows is installed on drive C:) right click it and choose
'Properties' from context menu and tell me (us?) what's stated as
'Used Space' and as 'Free Space'?
I'm assuming you did nothing special to your windows installation so I
assume further more your temporary directory is set to a default
value. This will be something like
'c:\documents and setting\Username\local settings\temp'
(or similar)

What I need to know is how much space is left on that 'physical
device' for storing temporary data like The Bat! does when compressing
your mail base(s).

When composing a message, open the address selection window with the

click a contact and choose from a list via 'Add address -'.

Nice but a bit clumsy ;-(
It would be simpler when writing an eMail address into the Address
field to have this Icon beside the already existing one. When clicking
on it it should show the eMail-Address selection from the Name entered
there. If you have more than one Address written in the Field it
should show the alternative address of all of then if it exist.

Yes I have this too. But not with all address books. One AB called
'Maillist' I have in one vCard an entry with 2 eMail address. The

Using the Maillist AB I can choose what ever is defined as alternativ

Can any other confirm this??

Re: Save View Settings Per Folder Choose Personality

2002-01-11 Thread Peter Palmreuther

Hello John,

On 11 Jan 2002 at 19:01:43 you wrote (at least in part):

JT 2) I have multiple personalities (hopefully I do not need a doctor).

If so many of us would need one :-)

JT When I click on a mailto link in a browser or from another
JT application, I would like TB to ask me who the mail is from. Is this
JT possible or do you have any recommendations.

It is IIRC not possible setting TB! to ask what ID the mail should be
from, but as TB! never sends an e-mail generated this way
automatically but instead opens up an editor window you can freely
choose your identity there.

One method if menu 'Options' / 'Active account'.
The second one (at least resulting in the same action) is a right
mouse click on the status bar in that field showing the current
account name ... you should recognize it, have to be the 6th one,
directly to the right of a tiny icon (that btw indicates message
priority and maybe even receipt/reading confirmation status)

If you do this _before_ altering the message body in any way you'll
have the advantage of being able to shortly switch the focus between
message body header fields and back and the macros written in your
templates (maybe default ones) are refreshed (default there is a
signature already given, using %FROM-macros).

Simply try it and you'll see the effect :-)

Check what you enter to Nickname (Handle) field. This must be unique
for each entry, as you can then only enter the handle to the To:, CC:
and BCC: fields, and The Bat will automatically replace the handle
with the real e-mail address. You can leave the handle empty.

Ok I found it! Dierk and Carsten you just gave me the point. I've
posted at 18:48 [EMAIL PROTECTED] that
trying it with two different AB and different Names I got this Error
with one.

Now I checked and found that this address that didn't work had a
handle. Taking it out it works. Also I cross checked with the address
that was working and had *no handle* - I put one in and it didn't work
anymore.

So we may have a bug!

Can other members confirm this Bug?

I assume you mean to completely remove them from TB! and place them somewhere

Does this really improve the performance of TB!?

 How?

And if so, at what point does this improvement occur?

As far as I can see (with anything from 0 to the current 30,000 messages
in TB!) there is no performance hit, in basic use, as far as I can see,
and no crashing irrespective of the size of the message base. This is a
remarkable achievement, and a rare one for Windows packages (which tend
to progressively collapse as more and more is stuffed into them) :)

That's what I thought, too, Alastair. It's one of TB's most appealing
features. It opens quickly, etc. So, why all the archiving?

Of course, things like searches, which may have to traverse the
entire folder tree, slow down as the message base gets bigger, but
nothing can be done about that.

I see.

I archive to CD-RW each night and to CD-R about every 50,000 messages or
so, but this is solely to keep the message base a manageable size for
 myself.

What exactly do you archive to CD-RW each night? Every message in
every folder? Do you not do a backup?

What I do when I want to clear out TB! is a complete backup (Tools |
Backup) to CD-R then delete the contents of each folder by hand*.

If I were to do that, could I (if I ever needed to) restore multiple
generations of a particular archive? Say, restore Year 1 plus Year 2,
to get an active file that included both Year 1 *and* Year 2?

Yes you can do so. You will then discover the power of QT's

Set up the templates as QT and then in the AB entry or Folder or Account
templates put

%Qinclude=Template HandleName

You can incl multiple QT's

My favourite feature was that TB! continued to work after 30 days. When
I first tried looking for a new email client, I fell in love with TB!
right away (especially after using Eudora, Pegasus and others). During
the first 30 days, I completely forgot that it was shareware and then it
stopped working on me. I sent my money in right fast!

But to answer your question more fully.. I have no idea. =]

Another way to do is to create folder for your multiple personalities

Re[2]: choosing an e-mail address from contacts

2002-01-11 Thread sbsi lists

Hi Jan,

Actually, that's a cool trick...didn't know that either! However, that
just goes thru other peoples names, and I want to have 1 person in my
address book but with multiple e-mail accounts attached to it and be
able to choose *easily* the other e-mail accounts related to that 1
person.

I saw the 1.54 beta today and it does more what I want...so, that's
probably what I'll try is just update to the beta.

Hi list,

When you receive HTML-mail (and i don't want to yap about the pro

Hi Luc,

Go to Options - Preferences and there you will find a box that says
display HTML messages automatically. Uncheck this and the HTML tab
should then be at the back if you want it and the plain text message
will appear by default.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong!
