Re: [Techno-Chat]: Chromebook Up And Running

2020-04-17 Thread Travis Siegel
I tried a chromebook last year, when I bought it for my daughter. I found
it usable, but extremely limited in what it can do. It would appear that
if you're looking to do anything online, (basically, anything browser
based), then chrome os is a perfect fit for you. If however, you're like
me, and do nearly nothing on the web, the chrome book/os is not a good
fit. Honestly, I see how it could be useful, it just isn't for me.

RE: [Techno-Chat]: epub reader in testing

2019-09-14 Thread Travis Siegel
If you're using jaws or NVDA, the reader should read each chapter when it
loads it. It won't read the next chapter automatically, and continue
reading, but a simple alt-N keystroke will move to the next chapter and
continue reading. I don't have a read aloud function, but could probably
add it if folks think it would be of use, (personally, I think the screen
reader is a much better mode than any read aloud functionality), but that
could be something sighted folks might want.
I did just update it to work better when searching for the index files, it
was missing some if they were deep enough in the epub file tree structure.

As for the dirzip program, that is a good suggestion., and I can probably
add that, since I already did the same thing for the reader program, it
shouldn't be difficult to modify the dirzip program to include that
behavior as well.

Thanks for the feedback.

I tried the Reader program. Thanks. Personally I quite like the ability to just

each chapter section?
I don't know how difficult it would be to provide a read through mode option
where you can just listen to chapters sequentially without having to load each
chapter.
By the way thanks a lot for DirZip lwhich I downloaded and will be a useful
addition, providing functionality that 7 Zip currently does not offer. For
perfect functionality it would be fantastic if you could use the program from
the Explorer send to menu with the program opening with the focus already on
the folder you have launched Dirzip from.

Anyone willing to take up the challenge is welcome to test my softcon reader
epub reader.
You can find it at
http://www.softcon.comm/files/softconreader.exe
or you can just go to http://www.softcon.com/files/ and see it there, along
with anything else that is currently out there for use.
It's not a standards compliant epub reader (yet), but as long as your epub file
contains an index file with the .ncx extension, it whould work just fine.
Of course, if the index file is broken (as I've noticed so many are), it won't
work well, but it certainly tries.
There is a url displayed on the control panel, so you can go to any file you
like, to help alleviate the problem with malconfigured ncx files.
It won't handle opf content files, so that will limit the epubs it works on,
but give it a try, if it doesn't work, no harm done.
It's a work in progress, so expect broken behavior from time to time.
I'd sure like to know about problems if you encounter any though, so I can at
least be made aware of them, even if I don't manage to fix them.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Thinking Of Branching Out

2017-09-05 Thread Travis Siegel
The raspberry pi is a nice little computer, and it can be made
accessible.  However, you don't have to wait to own a pi to learn how to
use one.  The raspberry pi uses a version of linux, so any linux machine
will teach you how to use the pi as well.  I have multiple raspberry
pis, and I even used a raspberry pi model 2 for nearly a whole year as
my primary computer, and it worked just fine.  There's a raspberry pi
list for vi folks if you're interested, I don't have the address handy,
but just do a search for raspberry-vi and it should be findable without
too much trouble.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Reading ePub books

2017-06-30 Thread Travis Siegel

I know a lot of folks don't like this option, but for me, it works well.

An epub file is just a zip file with all the contents of the book
compressed into a single file.

All you need to do to read an epub book is extract the file, then
navigate to the html files, and read them with your browser of choice.
I like this method, and it works for me, your mileage may vary.

Of course, this won't work if you have drm protected epubs, as the
browser won't know how to decrypt the drm content, but under all other
circumstances, it works just fine.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: MP3 Is Dead!

2017-05-16 Thread Travis Siegel
Ahh, the mp3 being dead is a misnomer. Sure, the company that owns it
isn't offering anymore licenses, but this is because their patents on
the format is expiring. This means it's no longer necessary to buy a
license, to be able to create and distribute mp3 formatted files.

I figured this was the reason, but this article confirms it.

http://hackaday.com/2017/05/14/patents-on-mp3-format-due-to-expire/

For more detailed information, see here.

https://madfileformatscience.garymcgath.com/2016/04/05/mp3patent/

By the end of 2017, all of the current mp3 patents will be expired, and
though it looks like the owners *could* make a case for extending the
format lock, it appears they aren't going to bother (probably a wise
decision).

As a result, I'd say this indicates that the mp3 format is far from
dead, if anything, I'd expect to see even more support for it being
built in to a wider array of products and programs.

I doubt this is anywhere near the end of life for mp3, it's just too
popular.

On 5/16/2017 6:15 PM, Dane Trethowan wrote:
Yep subject line says everything, the format is dead and no new
licences will be issued to continue supporting or developing the format.

MP3 has had a truly remarkable run when you think about it, almost 20
years and the format has ben at the heart of changing the way we
listen to music.

Now there are more efficient formats such as AAC out there and
Lossless compressed formats such as FLAC, storage space has increased
and so it goes.

There will be people who use MP3 for a long time to come but those
will become fewer as more people adopt other methods.

I do not have a modern up to date mac, the newest one I have is a 2008
macbook. I've been increasingly puzzled by apple's propensity to remove
functionality with each update of their hardware. It seems to be a
growing trend. Back in 2005 when voiceover was first announced, I was
very happy, and jumped into the mac with both feet. However, at the
time, I spoke (to multiple people) that I was afraid that this
accessibility thing apple was doing was going to begin with a bang, then
slowly fade out, leaving the mac unusable for any serious work. It
appears that is exactly what has happened, and I've not seen it, because
I haven't been able to afford an upgrade to the newest macs, so still
work on 10.6 and 10.7 with my ancient macbooks. I've also spent the
last 2 or 3 years macless, because all of mine had slowly broken down,
and being unable to replace them, I simply moved to other devices.
While IOS seems to be usable still, I have to wonder how deep this rot
goes, and if it will infect the IOS brand of devices as it has the OSX
brand of devices. I sincerely hope not, but one thing that has always
irked me to no end is the whole planned obsolescence thing. Seriously,
what's wrong with my 2008 macbook? Nothing at all, but it won't run the
newer os versions, it won't run most newer software, it won't do half
the things it used to do, and why? For no other reason than apple
decided to make it that way. Well, it's not all apple, but developers
aren't going to support something that the parent company doesn't have
any interest in anymore. This doesn't just apply to apple, windows is
guilty of this too, but that's neither here nor there. I've been quite
happy on my linux boxes every since I first installed linux way back in
1995. I've never been forced to update my linux box if I didn't want
to, I could continue using the programs I had, continue using the setup
I had, and it just worked, and none of this planned obsolescence
nonsense to break my linux box because a new release came out. I have
of course updated over the years, and still update regularly, but rarely
does a linux upgrade cause anything as significant as a program no
longer working due to different os requirements. Sure, upgrading from
libc to glib broke some things, but those were easily recompiled,
replaced, or updated. Kernel versions sometimes require changes in
code, but nonetheless, all the programs I like to use still work, and
I'm pretty much still using the same programs in 2016 that I used in
1995, albeit newer and more updated versions of said programs. That
just plain isn't possible on these commercial alternatives such as OSX
and Windows. Why is that? Well, there's lots of reasons, but it's
largely the fault of the manufacturers of these operating systems. You
just can't use a windows 95 program on windows 10, and perhaps expecting
that is silly, but I can still go get a copy of a program on linux that
I compiled back in 1995, take the source, make a few updates to allow
for different c compiler excentricities, and have a working program in a
matter of minutes (or hours for some of the more stubborn conversions),
and that just isn't possible under normal circumstances under windows or
OSX (though if you're talking terminal apps on osx, it is still
doable). I understand progress, and I generally have no problem with
progress, but (as I've said for years and years) removing functionality
is not an upgrade, but that's exactly what most of these companies do.
How many times have you updated a program only to find it no longer does
this or that, while it adds many other things, what is wrong with
keeping it behaving similar to the way it did before? I don't know why
manufacturers feel this is necessary, and I honestly don't think it
helps anybody (except the manufacturers), but it's become so ingrained
in our population, folks have come to expect it.

A lot of people say it's stupid to expect things to work now the same
way they did 10 years ago, and if you use windows, you're right, but if
you use linux, bsd, sunos, solaris, aix, or any other unix variant,
guess what? That's exactly what you can expect, and I'd wager, that's
exactly why those operating systems are still around.

Agree or not, (and neither view makes any difference to me) you can't
argue with the mere fact that windows and osx change considerably
between releases, breaking lots and lots of software people

to think that the pi would be good for a week or more on a single charge
of such a battery. I really need to look into getting meone of these
things. I use a power juice now, and it will run my pi for about an hour,
which isn't a whole lot, but it's enough when I need to be away for just a
little while, and still need access to a machine.

Review: RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme ? The Last Portable Battery You?ll Ever Need?
August 27, 2014

RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme

I?m starting to think I might have a problem. My interest in external batteries
may be turning into a fetish, but these energy stores are important to our
digital lifestyles. The latest electron pump to whet my appetite is the
RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme.

Xtreme is a clue to this units performance, this is one meaty power pack.
Weighing in at over half a kilo and with dimensions of 18.5 cms x 12.4 cms x
1.8 cms, this isn?t going to fit in your pocket. But its huge capacity is its
advantage and it?s still small enough to fit in pretty much any bag.

The 23,000mAh 5v output will, for example, fully recharge an iPhone around 12
times, a Galaxy S4 around 7 times and even an iPad Air from empty to full
twice over. In addition the battery can output a range of higher voltages to
power netbooks, notebooks and laptops too.

The Kit

As well as the battery itself, the kit comes with 4 charger tips for mobile
devices (Samsung, Nokia, mini and micro USB) as well as 2 x USB power leads,
plus a range of 10 charger tips for laptops (see below) and a DC lead to hook
them up. There?s also a felt carry case to pack it all into.

RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme Kit

Feel the Power

The little LCD screen gives the unit an air of quality and shows the remaining
power level of the cells (both visually in bars as well as a percentage
value). In addition the USB symbol appears when charging through either of the
USB ports.

RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme LCD Display

The upper aluminium body (plastic bottom half) helps with heat dissipation and
there are 4 ports along the top edge of the case. From left to right, first is
the input port, this is used to charge the battery from the supplied AC Mains
charger (15-24v 2A) which will work around the world as it?s 100-240V 50-60Hz.
It takes around 6 hours to fully charge.

RAVPower RP-PB14 Xtreme Ports

Next along is the USB 2 port, this is a 2.5A output that will charge an iPad
at full speed as well as those other power greedy devices like the Galaxy Tab
or Nexus 7. The USB 1 port is a standard 1.0A output for your iPhone, Android
smartphone, Portable Game Console etc. Finally the right-most port is the DC
Output for charging laptops and notebooks.

Check the AC adaptor for your laptop to determine the voltage required, then
hold down the single function button until the voltage value begins to flash.
Press the button again to cycle through the output options (9, 12, 16, 19 and
20 volts). Once you arrive at the correct value leave it flashing for a few
seconds and it will stop and lock to that output.

Apple Magsafe Cord / CableThe 10 notebook tips included in the kit will
connect the battery to most units from Acer, Asus, Benq, Dell, HP, Lenovo,
Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.

Being a MacBook household there?s an obvious omission from that list, no doubt
because of Apple?s proprietary connector. However a quick search turns up these
inexpensive Apple Magsafe and Magesafe 2 cords so it may be possible to rig
something up for your Cupertino computer. But plug any Heath Robinson
contraption into your shiny, expensive MacBook at your own risk.

You can use both USB Smart Ports at once (3.5A max) and even simultaneously
charge 3 devices by adding your laptop at the same time (4.5A max total
output). The instructions allude to an 80% efficiency stating that the unit
will ??consume about 20% of the total capacity, including power loss from
circuit
heat and voltage conversion?.

RAVPower say the Lithium-Polymer cells employed by their unit are more stable
and safer than Li-ion and they are good for over 500 recharge cycles. They are
keen to point out the other safety features of this unit too and quote
protection for overcharge, overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature and short
circuit with auto-shut down where required. In normal use the unit will auto
power off between 5 and 20 seconds after its been disconnected.

Bottom Line

We recently packed the RP-PB14 on a long family car journey and even though
there was USB power available in the car, the rear seat passengers preferred
to use the battery as it meant those (short) lightning and micro-USB cables
weren?t as stretched and restrictive as they were

I haven't tried a banana pi just yet, but I have been using a raspberry pi
quite successfully for more than a year now. I have it running raspbian
(the raspberry version of debian linux). But, from what I understand, the
pi can use the sd cards created for the banana pi as well, though I've not
got around to making an android version just yet. I also have plans to
test the FreeBSD version of the pi os, though currently, raspbian and
windows IOT are the only ones I've tested, and had good results with
both, though I didn't keep the windows IOT very long, as I needed the
card for other things. Either way, the difference between the raspberry
and the banana pi is that the banana has a better processor, though they
both have 1gb of ram (if you have the pi2 or 3). I'm using the pi 2,
haven't gotten ahold of a pi 3 just yet, but do plan to do so in the near
future, though I don't expect my user experience to change much, since
it's nearly identical except for minor things besides the faster
processor, which I don't know enough about to tell if it's equivalent to
the banana or not. Guess I'll find out when I get one. :)

Yes that?s true but never mind that, I?m writing about something far more
important and that is the fact that I had my Bowers And Wilkins A7 Speaker
system delivered yesterday morning and what a fine looking and sounding beast
it is too sitting on the shelf here in the den though I could easily use it
anywhere.
I?ve had a number of different Bowers and Wilkins speaker systems in my time
ranging from the very affordable and nice sounding Z2 iPod dock/Airplay
speaker to the little brother of the A7, the A5.

What?s the difference then between the A5 and A7 systems? Well there are 2 main
differences and they are power and connectivity.

The A7 not only supports AirPlay but also can be connected to analogue/digital
sources such as the digital output of a CD player or TV. The user also has the
option of connecting the A7 to a Windows PC or Mac in the same way one would
connect an external sound card.

The DSP in this speaker system  does a superb job at separating the channels
and projecting the sound,  even more amazing when you consider the size of the
A7, about the size of a large loaf of bread.

Total power output of the A7 is 100 watts RMS, - 25 each for the 2 stereo
channels and 50 for the sub-woofer - and all controlled by separate Class D
digital amplifiers for the channels and sub-woofer  so this is a true
powerhouse and party animal type device projecting wonderful clear bass, mid
range and crisp highs around the room though at my place I think the
description of around the room needs to be modified somewhat so let?s say around
the house? I can hear the clarity of the A7 down the other end of my house
from where the A7 is sitting and not all speaker systems I have can do that.

The Bowers And Wilkins doesn?t come cheap but in my view the penny?s I saved to
buy one and the time it took to scrape them together was well worth it.

Luckily I bought mine on sale, a third of the regular Australian price of
$1299 so people in the U.S. might like to check with their local Bowers And
Wilkins dealer or agent to see what they can get it for in their region and I?ve
no doubt that the price will be more competitive than it is in Australia.

And a final note, I sold my Bowers And Wilkins A5 some time ago with the idea
of getting the A7 as quickly as possible though as is often said, ?The best laid
plans are the one?s planned to fail?, so I was without the A5 for a lot longer
than I?d anticipated and had to use my Denon Cocoon Home in its place, the sound
of the Cocoon is very good though it still doesn?t match the sound or the power
of the Bowers And Wilkins A5/A7 but a good and cheaper alternative.

Anyway once I had the A7 installed and working I could easily recall the great
sound Bowers And Wilkins offers through its speaker systems which had been
quickly forgotten once I had to use the Denon Cocoon which I?ll write about
 another time.

I'd have to agree with the below statements here. I think there's enough
android lists already, but of course, it's up to you whether to make one
or not, and see how/if it works. I also agree on the list content, it's
kind of nice knowing that basically anything goes, as long as it's tech

Having said all that I value the techno-chat list for one important reason and

Windows, Mac and the mechanics of washing machines all fall into this category

Only my two cents worth.

the case with Mac Access and, thankfully, we are now picking up

Re: merging a folder with ncftp?

2014-09-23 Thread Travis Siegel
Rget is intended to continue an interrupted transfer, not sync a
folder that already exists. I've actually not tried to sync folders
via ftp the way you are doing. Normally, a perl/bash script would be
run on the host system (in this case, yours) comparing the two
folders, then ftp is used to move just the needed files, but it's used
as a separate process, not as an integrated whole solution. However,
it may be possible to use wget to do what you want, something like

wget -m -np
might do the trick, but that's off the top of my head, so case might
be off (I.E. may need a capital m instead of lower case), and you may
or may not need the -np parameter. In any case, if wget won't do the
job, you can always try a program called mirror, which is written in
perl, and is used by folks all over the world to keep sites in sync,
folks such as the project gutenberg, so you know it's in heavy use.
Mirror can be gotten from the perl cpan repository, or you can
probably google it if you need it via a web download, but honestly,
I'd expect one of those two solutions (wget or mirror) to do the trick
for you.

It's possible, but I have no way of knowing without opening it up, and
I'd rather not do that while it still works. *grin*
It's one of those round heaters, about 8-10 inches tall, and heat
comes out near the top 360 degree coverage, so you can be standing
behind it, and still get heat from it. It's quite useful, though
better suited for a center table than a shelf against the wall where I
have it, but still, it works well.
This music thing is interesting, and I figure the fan motor's magnet
is acting as a receiver or something similar, so it's not surprising,
just odd, as I'd normally not expect a heater to have the required
parts to act as a receiver, but I'm only partially versed in radio
frequency knowledge, so although it makes sense to me, someone with a
lot more know how would need to explain why it works, I just don't
have the frame of reference to put it in understandable terms. Or,
for all I know, maybe the heater is acting as nothing more than an
amplifier, and the radio two shelves down is the actual culpret, and
the heater is just ramping up the output of the radio, even though
it's off.
When we lived in Alabama, we had some wiring issues, and the radio
alarm clock my son had in his room used to broadcast it's channel
through the house wiring. I could hear his radio (even though it was
off) when I was laying in my bed, especially if I leaned over the side
and got closer to the outlet. It was very disconcerting to wake up in
the middle of the night, and hear music until I figured out what was
causing it. Eventually, that socket burned out, and took the radio
with it, and we never did replace it, (neither the plug or the radio)
so I honestly don't know which one was the actual cause of the problem.

2014-03-14 Thread Travis Siegel
Martin, you mentioned electronic equipment getting out of whack, and
strange things happening to it. Well, I have a small heater I keep on
a shelf in my bedroom for those nights it gets too cold for simple
blankets and feather beds to cope. What I find, is that during the
times this heater is running, (generally around 2-4 am timeframe) I
can hear a radio station faintly coming from the heater when it's
running. It's not loud enough to record, since the heater noise
drowns it out mostly), but it is noticable, and although I have yet to
hear a station id during the time it's been active, I find it
interesting that it happens anyway. I've been tempted a time or two
to get my regular radio, and try to match the station before the
heater turns off again, but being it happens in the middle of the
night, and I'm usually too cold to crawl out of bed if I don't need
to, it's remained only an idle thought.

Re: Doodles With Dimension: 3-D Printing Simplified

2014-02-25 Thread Travis Siegel
I actually participated in this kickstarter. I thought this would be
an excellent way for me to build prototypes, project boxes, and
missing parts for various toys we have around the house that
constantly need fixing. I did pledge at the lowest level, and was
promised my pen by january 2014. Unfortunately, I had the funds when
pledging, but kickstarters work on the premace that they don't take
the funds until they're ready to begin production. By the time they
were ready, the money I'd set aside for it had been used for some
emergency or other, and I no longer had it sigh I still want one of
these though, so thanks for pointing this out, I'll be ordering myself
one just as soon as I can.

Re: Braille

2013-11-18 Thread Travis Siegel
My understanding of the english vs. american braille is that your
system uses the first possible contraction, regardless of where it
falls in the word. So, as you said, appear would have the ea symbol,
followed by the r. American braille doesn't break up sylabols,
(though that doesn't hold in your example) but we'd use the ar symbol
as you pointed out.
Unfortunately, I'm coming up blank on examples of english vs american
braille for cross sylable splits, but I do remember seeing them when I
read a book written in english braille many many years ago, and it
confused me quite a bit until I got used to it. :)
I haven't read the specs for this universal braille yet, so can't
comment on how it's doing things, but my understanding was that they
wanted a single code to replace all the various systems, computer,
nemeth, english, american, and foreign languages. I'm not sure
they've managed to cover all of those basis, especially since the
whole computer braille code was specifically designed to be an exact 1
for 1 match for the ascii character set, and nemeth has it's own way
of doing things, but if they've managed to pull it off, I'd be
surprised. Are they planning next to unify the written alphabet as
well, so russian, chineese, arabic and african languages all use the
same set of symbols? It's silly to contemplate such a thing, because
each language has symbols denoting sounds in that particular
language. I submit braille codes served the same purpose, and except
for the english vs american codes, I don't understand how they plan to
squeeze all the others into a single unified code. It's specifically
because each code was designed for something different that made them
the way they were, and throwing that all away, just because someone
somewhere didn't like learning different codes seems silly to me, but
then again, except for a short survey I participated in a couple years
ago, nobody asked my opinion about it all, so what's a person to do?

Re: In Google we Trust

2013-09-11 Thread Travis Siegel

Thanks for the mp3 link.
Anyone these days who thinks their internet surfing is their own needs
a reality check. There's absolutely no way to completely cover your
tracks. You can make it harder though. Generally I use lynx on a
linux box when doing most of my internet searches. I tell lynx to
ignore all cookies, and since it doesn't run any java script, I don't
really have to worry about it passing info to other places. If I do a
search on safari (as often I am required to do for various reasons) I
do not click on the google provided link. Instead, I copy the link,
then remove all the google portions before pasting it back into my url
field. Call me paranoid if you like, but folks already know too much
about me for my comfort, I don't see any reason to make it easier for
them.
I'm honestly of the opinion all this sort of thing should be illegal,
but you'll never get commercial entities to agree to that, so we have
to do the best we can at least to make their job harder if nothing
else. :)
Of course, this coming from someone who hasn't done anything more
shady than download a few ebooks with questionable parentage, but I
use the whole accessible format copyright loophole to cover that one.
I also make it a practice to delete such books after I've read them,
so that I cannot be accused of hoarding or passing along such
materials. Anyway, I sure hope this program make ssome folks wake up
and realize just how much data they do produce, and how much of it
will never go away.

Anyway, interesting documentary, thanks for sharing.

Re: Small World

2013-04-09 Thread Travis Siegel
I read an article somewhere (can't remember where, maybe science
news) describing the process of patching the transatlantic cable.
They used a ship (a rather large one) and it had hooks that dropped
down to the bottom of the ocean, grabbed both ends of the broken
cable, and brought it up to the surface. They patched it (don't
remember how) then dropped it again. It fixed the cable, though the
article didn't say for how long. It's interesting though, how much
technology has progressed since then. These days, they can tell you
not only that the cable is broken, but where it is broken, and that I
find interesting. Anyone know how that's done?

Don't know if this is still up for testing, but if it is, it's not

I've very often considered creating something similar, having a show,

and I'd never be able to keep to a schedule. Also, I really hate
hearing my own voice. Loads of folks have told me I'd make an
excellent radio announcer, but I really really don't like hearing my
own voice, so everytime I get close to doing such a project, I
remember how much I hate deadlines, voices, and streaming content,
and that takes care of my urge for another 6-10 months or so. :)
But, good luck, and I hope it all works out for you, it's always fun
to watch things like this one take off.

Re: Screen-Readers

2012-06-05 Thread Travis Siegel
Gordon, it seems their standard operating procedure is the same no
matter what product you're talking about. I'd bought a used braille
printer (a versapoint bp some or other) and freedom scientific/blazie
had just bought enabling technologies, the original makers of that
particular model printer. When I contacted them about sending it in
for repair, because it didn't work when I received it, I was told
that they would not repair the printer, but would be happy to sell me
a new one.
I uh, said something quite inappropriate for a public forum, and
promptly hung up and took the printer apart. It turns out one of the
circuit boards had come out of it's socket during shipping. I simply
reseated the board, and that printer is still producing braille
materials for me today, and that was close to 8 or 9 years ago if I
recall correctly.
That was my one and only experience with their hardware support, and
I have no desire to repeat it. I now refuse to purchase anything
with an fs logo on it, and even used equipment, I have to think real
hard about before I will drop anything for it, and even then, it'd
better be one heck of a deal, or I'm walking. I can't stand the way
all these adaptive technology companies treat people who honestly
have a need for the products they make, especially if they can't
afford to purchase the latest and greatest copy of whatever it is
they're pushing this week.
I'm currently expanding my knowledge of circuits, diy kits, and hobby
circuit board makers, so that I can (in some way) reduce the reliance
on such companies for all blind/visually impaired folks. I intend to
release kits folks can build themselves (or preassembled if desired)
to take up the slack of everyday items that these so-called adaptive
companies have foisted on their unsuspecting users for years, just
because the poor people don't know there's options, and wouldn't know
where to find them if they did.
Several things are whirling around in my brain, as well as in various
stages of prototyping, and when each project is complete, I plan to
post them for anyone who wants them, the first of which will be a
talking thermostat that cost less than 100 us dollars. An external
speech synthesizer (in the same price range) for those who are tired
of wasting cpu cycles to those horrible software synthes), and all
sorts of other things that may or may not be practical, (won't know
until I give them a shot) but they'll all be built with off-the-shelf
items any electronic hobbiest can lay their hands on, and build
themselves if they so choose to do so.

I honestly believe it's something like this that will be the only
thing to force these rediculous prices back down to something the
average user can afford.
Who knows, likely it won't change a thing, but if it inspires only
one person to build their own solution instead of purchasing an
overpriced adaptive item that cost 3 times the price, and does only
half as much as the comparable commercially available item, then I
figure it's a good days work.

I always wondered why nobody ever built a box that could read these
closed caption streams. I realize that to some, this would seem
silly, if you can hear the dialog, then why use the cc being read via

broadcasts that have the native language being streamed as a cc at
the bottom of the screen. It always seemed to me that it would be a
trivial thing to do, but yet, it was never done. Curious how
difficult something like this would be for someone to do on their

C64 and pc xt (was Closed Captions)

2012-05-29 Thread Travis Siegel
I used the c64 myself, my brother had one, and although I don't
remember what the name of the speech synthesizer was called, I do
remember that it cost 60 bucks, and came on a cartridge, so you had
to plug the cartridge into the keyboard, then anything that came up
on the screen would talk, as long as it was text. That's where I
started playing the infocom games. It was a very robotic sounding
voice, and I know we had to buy at least two of them before the c64
finally gave up the ghost, and we switched over to a goold old PC XT
machine put out by ids which actually ran an necv20 cpu, which
incorporated an 80186 commandset, so it ran about 50 percent faster
than a standard xt, and it also had a turbo mode which would double
it's speed from 4.77 mhz to over 8mhz, making it quite speedy for
it's time (circa 1986) It even was able to run (some) 286 specific
software, which allowed me to use it long after everyone had given up
on their old xts, and moved on. I think it was somewhere around 1990
or 91 before I actually took the plunge and purchased a 286 machine
which only ran at 12 MHZ. :)

Quite the excellent little of piece of hardware that xt compatible was.

Re: the good old days of TV

2012-05-24 Thread Travis Siegel
Interesting Martin. You mention that the 2 Meter band goes from 144
to 148 here, but then that means my little handheld radio I bought at
Radio shack some 10+ years ago is a bit more than it claims. It goes
from 144 all the way up to somewhere beyond 163 or so. Any idea why
it was labeled a 2 meter radio if it's range was that large?
Recently, it's had issues in that it now only access stations I'd
already preprogrammed into it, and no longer will change freqs using
it's up/down buttons, though hitting the preset freq buttons works
just fine.
I did find a fellow here in town who claims he works on such radios,
so I'm thinking I'll drop by his place and see if it's fixable, but I
don't hold out much hope, considering on how old it is. It's built
pretty solid though, it's been dropped many many times, and only in
the last year or so has began misbehaving, so if it can be made to
work again, I'd sure appreciate having it operational again, it was
great to be able to pick up the weather stations when we lived in
Alabama, since there was almost always tornado or rough weather
warnings being sent out. It was nice to be able to turn on that
little handheld unit and get all the details in a few minutes, as
opposed to wading through commercial radio, andhaving to wait a half
hour or more for the same info.

Re: Our Blogs

2012-05-13 Thread Travis Siegel
These sorts of things are exactly why I don't purchase domains from
anyone but myself. And, also why I don't use prehosted blog sites.
You can install wordpress anywhere, it doesn't have to be on their
servers, and you can handle your own domains, no reason to pay anyone
to hand over a packaged deal for (likely) more money than it takes to
do it yourself.
I realize these folks fill a nich, (a rather profitable one if they
are to be believed) but I personally wouldn't use such services,
unless I was out of options all across the board.
If they own the domain, nothing you can do. if someone else
registered it in the meantime, (again) nothing you can do. If it got
renewed, and is just waiting for you to reclaim it, then that's
probably the only way you'll get it back. (whois is your friend)
check the whois record, and see who it's registered to, then you'll
know which of the above scenarios *might* apply.
I always recomend to folks to handle their own domain registration,
specifically to avoid such issues as this one, I can't tell you how
many times folks have had domains stolen out from under them because
some company insisted on registering the domain for them, then
mishandled it afterowrds, or claimed it after the term was up, or any
number of other things I've heard horror stories about.
It's possible though, that in this case, nothing has been done with
it, and it's simply sitting in limbo waiting to be returned to the
pool (ome registrars hold on to them longer than others) and a quick
email to support will gather it up for you again, and all will be fine.
That does happen from time to time, but from where I'm sitting,
that's only a small minority of cases. Good luck with the domain and
the blog.

folder in windows explorer allows you to set the sharing status) and
on mac, as long as you connect to the mac using samba, you can share
anything you like.
No experience with android or iphone/ipod sharing directly, if I want
something on my ipod, I just move it to a web directory on the mac,
and download it directly on the ipod.

Don't have an android device though, so can't address that question.

Re: Screen-Readers

2012-01-02 Thread Travis Siegel

Uhh, I must correct one misconception in this email.
Ms *did* produce a screen reader years ago.
At that time, a few screenreader manufacturers blew their top,
threatened all sorts of legal action, and (surprisingly enough) ms
caved.
They didn't toss their efforts entirely though, they turned it into
narrator, which still exists even in the latest version of windows.
So, in this case, don't blame ms. This is actually the first (and in
my opinion) one of the only times that ms actually tried to do the
right thing, then gave in to bad pressure to do the wrong thing, and
thus, the visually impaired market was once again left to the mercy
of the large screen reader manufacturers.
Most things ms does don't make sense to me, and this one is no
exception, but at least in this particular instance, ms isn't to
blame here.

Re: Window-Eyes

2011-12-25 Thread Travis Siegel
nvda is open source, it can't be taken away from the market, unless
they somehow withdraw every single copy of the source they ever
distributed. Not possible.
And, even if they do, there's nothing stopping someone else from
forking the source, and starting another version.

No worries on that front.

Re: an html question

2011-12-24 Thread Travis Siegel
I'm guessing you're stuck with it. Just like vo says header level 1,
or header level 2 when you use the h1 /h1 and h2 /h2 tags,
it's built-in, so your out of luck.
I don't bother with blockquotes, I just separate the quotes with P
tags, then quote them myself using standard double quote marks. but
even so, hearing blockquote wouldn't bother me anyhow, I'm used to
such nonsense now.

KYW is an AM newsradio station based in Philadelphia, though I don't
know if they have an internet feed anywhere. I'm not in that area
anymore (haven't been in many years) but I'd wager they're still
around. Fairly decent station for news, it's all news all the time.
hth.

Alexander Graham Bell recordings

This is pretty cool. Some scientists have now managed to recover and
play back some of the earliest recordings from the inventor of the
telephone. It's quite a good read, give it a look.

And, if it truly claims the feed is only for the us, there's ways
around that too, a simple script to forward the page, and feed back
the url would solve that problem nicely, though I doubt it's
necessary in this case.

Re: Tune-Up Utilities 2012 [Revisited]

2011-11-01 Thread Travis Siegel
The simple fact of the matter is that most windows software does use
tab and arrow keys to access things, so when one doesn't, it feels
broken to folks who are used to the tab/arrow approach. Much like
apple tries to enforce certain standards for developers working on
osx, because folks get used to the way things are supposed to work,
and when they don't work that way, it causes confusion. Many
developers have run into this when they neglected the apple way of
doing things, and went their own way. I recall one particular
instance, where the developer did such a horrible job, nobody bought
the software,. I have no idea what happened after that, if he fixed
it or not, but when folks were asked why they didn't use the
software, the overwhelming response was that it didn't work like a
mac app should.
Folks get used to things, and if you're going to do things
differently, it really should be for some reason other than I felt
like it. :)

Re: Review: WD My Passport Essential portable hard drive

2011-08-22 Thread Travis Siegel

On Aug 19, 2011, at 2:09 PM, Gordon Smith wrote:

But I will say this about the large models, the power supplies are
absolutely dreadful. They die more frequently than the drives.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem.
I've found the lacie
external drives to be of excellent quality, especially the ones
that are built specifically for the mac minis. The only problem is I
broke one of the pins off one of the power adapters some time ago,
and I can't seem to find a replacement. Apple doesn't stock them
directly even though I bought the drive in the apple store. Lacie's
web site is not accessible enough for me to determine which power
supply is the proper one for my drive, so at the moment, I'm reduced
to running one or the other, but never both at once, which severely
cuts into my storage capabilities. sigh
But, otherwise, they're excellent drives, and haven't given me any
trouble at all, and I've had them running constantly for the last 2
or 3 years.
They do cost a bit more, because of their unique design. They're
designed to sit under the mac mini, which makes the mini appear
thicker, and they have firewire ports on them. I have managed to
burn out one of the firewire ports on one of them, but that was not
the fault of the drive, I think it happened when doing an inordinate
amount of swapping around a few months ago, and they got tired of all
the restarts. :)

sigh
But, as I said above, other than that, these drives have been the
perfect workhorses, and have worked flawlessly.
