Even without water PC is better than anyplace else without water.
Actually, I prefer Flat Creek at the all-around best site we ever had. It's
still available but needs to be reserved early.

One of the main criteria for a site is running water. Find 10 or 20 acres
with river (or creek) frontage and flat camping above the flood plain and I
think the rest can be faked.

For everybody's benefit: The traditional date for TCR was not the 3rd
weekend in October--and never had been. Disabuse yourselves of that idea.
It was the weekend nearest to the 15th of October. Mostly it was the 3rd
weekend of the month but sometimes it claimed the 2nd weekend. There were 2
or 3 times when some other conflict (a hurricane, for instance) caused the
date to be pushed forward or backward. The weekend nearest the 15th
worked out really well during its tenure.
Just FYI, the underlying purpose was to not be in conflict, date wise,
with the TAG event in Alabama in order that cavers could attend both events
if they wished but, more importantly, so that Bob Bob and other vendors
could attend both events, hopefully, so that Texas cavers would have
hands-on access to top quality caving gear. At some point Bob quit going to
TAG and came only to TCR and few, if any, cavers attended both events so
the whole point became sorta moot.

I like the third weekend. PC is my favourite spot. At least on the
registration side of things, we have a fantastic little hutch that we can
lock papers etc. right at the entrance, and wouldn't have to station
outside a bathroom like we did last year.
The issue that I see with moving it to the 2nd weekend (like last year), is
that the second weekend has always been the Colorado Bend State Park work
project. We keep it consistent with them, and although they are amazingly
accommodating at the park, we don't want to piss off the rangers by being a
hassle to have there...

more difficult to land the helicopter there. 2nd choice would be Flat
Creek, followed by last year's site. But any spot, preferably with water
and privacy west of the Balcones Fault, with enough cavers in attendance
 will be just fine.

For everybody's benefit: The traditional date for TCR was not the 3rd weekend
in October--and never had been. Disabuse yourselves of that idea. It was the
weekend nearest to the 15th of October. Mostly it was the 3rd weekend of the
month but sometimes it claimed the 2nd weekend. There were 2 or 3 times when
some other conflict (a hurricane, for instance) caused the date to be pushed
forward or backward. The weekend nearest the 15th worked out really well
during its tenure.
Just FYI, the underlying purpose was to not be in conflict, date wise, with the
TAG event in Alabama in order that cavers could attend both events if they
wished but, more importantly, so that Bob Bob and other vendors could attend
both events, hopefully, so that Texas cavers would have hands-on access to top
quality caving gear. At some point Bob quit going to TAG and came only to TCR
and few, if any, cavers attended both events so the whole point became sorta
moot.

Re: [Texascavers] TCR 2015 Survey

2015-01-07 Thread Kurt L. Menking via Texascavers
My wife and I just spent a few days in the lodge at Paradise Canyon. We keep
in regular contact with the owners, and even help them out from time to time
when they need someone to run the place for a day or two. So we know there is
actually a spring fed pool in the riverbed that is about 200' x 40' that hasn't
varied much in size during this drought. People swim (and even drown) in this
pool year round, although I wouldn't recommend it in July and August. I expect
it would be plenty big and probably an acceptable water source for TCR water
based activities. It's not nearly as nice as a flowing river, but it's not
nearly as bad as a totally dry riverbed.

And in every other way it's a great TCR site.

The owners are continuing to invest in, and improve the property. They've
added a very nice kid playground, improved the retaining walls and added stairs
all along the riverbank. It will be very nice when the water returns. They've
also added more water faucets all over the park, and many more electric outlets
as well.

Re: [Texascavers] TCR 2015 Survey

2015-01-07 Thread Carl Kunath via Texascavers
Don:

Paradise Canyon is the hands-down favorite for me and for nearly everyone I
know.
The lack of water is inconvenient but doubtless a temporary condition.
Last year’s site had water but it was so distant and inconveniently placed that
it was a non-issue for nearly everyone.

October 15-18 is the best date.

Thanks for your efforts in keeping this event going and running smoothly. I
plan to make a motion to double your compensation.

Ok, Cavers, I'm starting to think about this upcoming TCR, locations and dates.
Paradise Canyon called me yesterday, and asked me to ask around and spread the
word that if we have any need for a meeting site, he'd be happy to help. We all
like PC, but they still have no water. It's not a deal killer. It's an option
for TSA, TCMA and TCR.
How do y'all feel about this site?

Next is the date. There have been several traditional weekends and many
suggestions etc. I've penciled in the weekend of October 15-18 as a target date.
How do y'all feel about that?

I like Bracketville myself. It is close to my house. It has swimming and
water and a hotel for the codgers and there are dozens of caves nearby. The
NSS Convention went off well there. We also did Chalk Bluff once and got

El Jefe -

Keeping things consistent has its appeals for the more anal retentive of us
in the group. I support the third weekend of October for the date.

Water is always nice at a site but not a requirement. Some of the folks
from outside San Antonio and Austin might appreciate a site closer to
them. For the love of all that is right with the world don't pick anything
near Dallas. I've yet, in three decades on this planet to find any
redeeming qualities to that place except maybe that it is not Beaumont.

The mud pits around Gonzales were fun, think cavers in the mist looking for
cow pie shrooms. It has also been a while since we had anything out west
like Chalk Bluff though cost had previously been an issue there.

The beauty of the situation is you are in charge, you will never make
everyone happy and unless someone else is willing and able, we go where and
when you decide.

Re: [Texascavers] TCR 2015 Survey

2015-01-07 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
NOAA has posted a map on the general drought forecast through March 2015 at
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/expert_assessment/seasonal_drought.pdf.

The Paradise Canyon area is listed as “Drought remains but improves” surrounded
by nearby areas of “Drought removal likely.” Looking at NOAA’s long-term
precipitation predictions, the chances for rain are higher than normal through
March but remain normal the rest of the year. “Normal” rainfall could put a
little water into the river.

I checked the website for the Texas State Climatologist, which is out of date.
The last posted forecast was for August through October 2013.

What about Krause Springs? There hasn't been a TCR there since the 80's
according to the cavetex site. Any reason?

I actually prefer having TCR somewhere different each year, or at least
some sort of rotation. Keeps it interesting. PC is not my favorite, but it
 works.
Third weekend in Oct sounds good.

Re: [Texascavers] TCR 2015 Survey

2015-01-07 Thread Frank Binney via Texascavers
Hey Don--
Thanks again for all the hard work you do to make TCR a success. (And thanks
also to Allan, Andy, Gill and other past organizers).
I love Paradise Canyon--with or without water-- even though it will be more
difficult to land the helicopter there. 2nd choice would be Flat Creek,
followed by last year's site. But any spot, preferably with water and
privacy west of the Balcones Fault, with enough cavers in attendance will be
just fine.
Cheers,
Frank Binney

I like Paradise Canyon.  Water would be nice, but I don't spend any time
boating or fishing so it is not a deal killer for me. My two cents worth.

Ok, Cavers, I'm starting to think about this upcoming TCR, locations and

spread the word that if we have any need for a meeting site, he'd be happy to
help. We all like PC, but they still have no water. It's not a deal killer.
It's an option for TSA, TCMA and TCR.
How do y'all feel about this site?

Next is the date. There have been several traditional weekends and many
suggestions etc. I've penciled in the weekend of October 15-18 as a target
 date.
How do y'all feel about that?

I already have 11ac in Bastrop. A few work weekends with lots of people should
make it TCR habitable ;-)

That works for me too. Find a nice place and buy it. If every caver chipped in
$10 and there are at least five or six that I know of there would be a great
stash of dollars. If 500 cavers came up with $25 each there you go.
