[tw5] Re: A TiddlyWiki for Dummies series ...

2019-03-12 Thread S. S.

It appears it falls onto me to make a decision on how to name the series,
and we will just have to live with the consequences.

When I started writing this documentation, I felt it was for
non-programmers. Along the way, I slowly swayed over to the belief that it
would be better if it was for those who has some experience coding. Then the
post by Birthe last week
put
things back into perspective (and made me laugh):

Note: *Bold* formatting above added by me.

It also reminded me of Jeremy saying somewhere:

*TiddlyWiki wasn't put together and designed for developers. Software

So I have gone back to the basic reason I started writing this series, and
will name it:

TiddlyWiki for Beginners

The "b" version matches (I think) the original version you first had on
your machine, but not the "a" version you installed earlier today.
Something about the key selection is different between a and b. Something I
need to figure out. For most people (I think) the "b" should match what

There's no + button on the top of your list page? I can't imagine how that
could happen. Is it possible to take a screenshot?
Different machines have different gestures for screenshots. I think it's
usually a palm swipe.

Gotcha. Okay. Interesting idea. I'm not sure about incorporating standard
tiddlers. I sort of feel that same effect is achievable in a story window
tiddler, but it gives you other options as well. But moving to the back
could be nice. Trying to think of a nice way that could be accessible in
the UI without creating clutter. Food for thought.

Of course when we click on a tiddler it will be displayed fully, clicking

Is that a set position in depth? That's interesting. I took an approach
that favors recency. I think adding a set depth to each tiddler is
certainly possible. But it might start to get troublesome if you have
various configurations that you like to flip through. If it is in Mentat,
the depth of windows could be configured by session just as the other
position information is. But if we are just dealing with vanilla Volant
tiddlers, that might not work without adding a fairly complex system.

If you aren't talking about a set position in depth, the maximize system
does just that. But it has only been configured to work with window
tiddlers. That could be changed however. Are you talking about having the
change occur whenever you click on a tiddler? Or just when you use a button
like the maximize button?

Perhaps we could "minimise" a tiddler to a row at the bottom of the screen
> such that clicking will open it "Restore" in the previous positions, and
> full screen the tiddler as well.
>

This is a great idea. The Mentat plugin has an Engine tiddler that holds
windows at the bottom of the viewport, but they're just buttons.
Interesting to think about making a sort of icon of the window. It might be
costly in terms of performance, I don't rightly know, but that would make
Mentat feel more like a desktop, which was a big inspiration for the
interface.

Mentat are explorations of the fixed $:/Volant tiddlers. But the
$:/VolantAbsolute tiddlers will get their time in the sun, too, I think. I
need to take a break and work on some other projects, but that's very much
on my radar. In part, the easy drag mode was put in place with this in
mind. If you zoom out, you're not going to be able to grab the margins.
You'll want to be able to simply grab the whole tiddler.

I would be keen to see a filter based and "multiple engines" option, for

Yes. I think that's a good idea at some point. I erred on the side of
having things quickly configurable but simple with the Engine plugin. There
were already so many new systems to grapple with. But yeah, I think that
could be useful.

There has being a proposed feature for "Stacked" story view that is

I think the Volant plugin might be overkill for that. But I should think it
would be possible.

Wiki of Wikis sounds really cool. To my mind, ideally Tiddlywiki would be a
one-stop-shop for all a person's notes and information. Having the ability
to seamlessly navigate from wiki to wiki would be amazing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It may be a few months before I have the
chance to take on any of this stuff. I'm trying to get job ready with the
programming at the moment, and I'm a bit behind where I want to be. But I
definitely plan on returning to this stuff!

Best wishes,

[tw5] No Close Button on Popup dialogues "modals" and TiddlyMap?

2019-03-12 Thread TonyM
Folks,

I installed tiddlymap to an existing wiki *5.1.19*
However all the modals that popup do not have a close button
Fortunately I have a MyMenu that allows me to save and reload the wiki, but
otherwise I would be dead in the water.
This problem my have pre-existed my TiddlyMap install, and only now I see
it, not sure.

I believe this has already being encountered, can anyone share how to fix
this and is it a bug, with a bug report?

Regards
Tony

Re: [tw5] Embedding content using

2019-03-12 Thread Kalcifer Kandari
One problem with the method, especially for locally served videos, is that
has no access to tag attributes, such as loop, autoplay,
and controls. The only way to set them would be to create a '.html' file
that just has the tag with the attributes set, then use that as the
source instead of the video directly. This of course isn't a problem when
embedding content from external sites with custom players.

Re: [tw5] Embedding content using

2019-03-12 Thread Kalcifer Kandari
I created a workaround for media where the aspect ratio is known. The width
can be set to 100%, and for 16:9, the height can be calculated using this
CSS: height: calc( ( 100vw - px ) / 16 * 9);, where
is the total width of elements that do not flex.
@media would also need to be used as well for the sidebar breakpoint.

Not sure how elegant this is, but wouldn't be difficult to incorporate into
a macro where the CSS is inline and the aspect ratio is a parameter.

[tw5] Re: Quinoid v0.0.8alpha Downloadable, Configurable Resources

2019-03-12 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
Hi Tony,

I appreciate your feedback!

Did it force you to install a new version?

I used a different machine, but (I thought) the usual key to do the
release. Just in case I messed up, I've just put a new release generated
with the original machine. But if everyone reports they "have" to
uninstall/install, then I'll know something else is going on.

Does it ask you for location permission? I haven't changed anything re geo
since the last update, where I tried to add some generic location
permissions. It's something else I need to research.

What is unassigned key?

Which method are you using to look for files? The "+" button, or the menu?
I think the latter. For the latter, on vsn 7, your files probably need to
be in a public space, either the downloads directory, or the documents
directory. For using the "+" button, you should be able to navigate to
"sourced" files such as pinned files provided by Google Drive.

Can you test the new "Resources" option from the menu? It should allow you
to download a file of your choice to somewhere public on your machine. The
path should be something like .../Documents/TwFiles/ where the ... will
depend on your machine. Once you have downloaded a file, you should (I
think) be able to use the "Find files" to find and add the downloaded file
(except it should already be in your list, but it's the principle I'm
concerned with).

Thanks!

Hi,

For me an alias has 2 major advantages. ..

1 Less to type (for the lazy folk ;)
2 Links don't break, if tiddler gets a new title.

IMO the OP should also be for "the lazy folk" ;)

[tw5] Re: Announcing 4 New Plugins (sort of)

2019-03-12 Thread TonyM
Admls,

I apologize for asking for new features, of an already powerful solution,
the thing is your solution is very inspiring.

Sorry I should have made it clearer. Imagine you are in a Vector diagram
editor, Photoshop etc... you can move items between layers.

That we could select a tiddler and "Move to Back" would be like placing it
on the background such that other "Floating" tiddlers, even standard
tiddlers, would be in the midground. Selecting a tiddler and move to front
would pull that tiddler forward so that it would overlap other tiddlers. To
maintain control an intermediate position of middleground (perhaps as
currently is operating). Of course when we click on a tiddler it will be
displayed fully, clicking another it will return to the position. Your
pileup does this according to the active tiddler, but when we are focused
on another perhaps they could move to their set position.

This would allow dashboards with a higher screen density where clicking on
part of the tiddler will make it visible. This starts to resemble the way
we can arrange applications on our Desktop.
Which makes me wonder;

 - Perhaps we could "minimise" a tiddler to a row at the bottom of the
screen such that clicking will open it "Restore" in the previous positions,
and full screen the tiddler as well.
 - Provide a larger virtual wiki space, large than the physical screen in
which we can arrange tiddlers, with mouse or arrow keys scrolling
 left/right up/down.
 - This would allow those popular and "sexy" presentations that move
the perspective not the content - if you know what I mean
 - With a zoom out option to see them all.
 - I would be keen to see a filter based and "multiple engines" option,
for example when I change projects be able to display the key tiddlers for
 that project.

There has being a proposed feature for "Stacked" story view that is
continuously held back for later release, see bottom
of https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease/#TiddlyWiki%20Pre-release this may be
able to be implemented in your solution but may require more levels than
background, middleground and foreground.

I am really looking forward to the potential of your solution when using
tiddlers with internal navigation or iframes to other sites and wikis. It
may behave like a Wiki of Wikis.

Regards
Tony

[tw5] Re: Classic view for TW 5

2019-03-12 Thread TonyM
Roland,

I know how you feel changing from TWC to TW5 but I can assure you from my
own experience this feeling passes. TW5 is much more feature rich in the
User Interface customisation as built, that is without installing plugins,
however there are plugins that present whole new ways at looking at
tiddlers, there is much more customisation and perhaps 30% of TWC plugins
have equivalents in the core now.

If you want help in this transition pick a use case from your existing TWC
and ask the community how they would do it in TW5.

Mark,

Installed on my android 7.0. I had to uninstall the previous version first,
and manualy add the storage permission. I am not so sure now how to add
location permissions.

I can only see "Find TW File" Browses storage, and "Unassigned Key" - does
nothing, in the menu
I no longer seem able to select html files even if I can find them in "Find
TW File"

As a Result I can't test any further.

[tw5] Embedding content using

2019-03-12 Thread Kalcifer Kandari
So I'm attempting to configure TiddlyWiki in order to display embedded
content, such as videos, using the HTML tag. At the moment this
primarily concerns videos.

This post is an offshoot of this discussion
about an
error that occurs with the HTML tag. An would be an
adequate solution to that problem if it wasn't for the following.

The main problem I have encountered so far is the inability to dynamically
resize the height of an . In other words, as the width of the
containing element, such as a gets smaller, the height of the
gets proportionally smaller, for example, in order to maintain a
16:9 aspect ratio for a video that is shrinking with the width of the page.
Currently I don't think this is possible with CSS.

What I would like to know is if it is possible to do with JavaScript,
possibly with the iFrame Resizer
library, preferably
without creating a plugin.

Great work! I can imagine using this on a large desktop screen. Often to
make notes I have a pdf open on the side. Now I can copy text onto a
tiddler and keep it open on the side while I work on making notes in my

Re: [tw5] Re: ResizeObserver loop limit exceeded

2019-03-12 Thread Kalcifer Kandari
Any progress on this bug? I'm planning to have a lot of video content on my
site and the lack of controls will obviously be a big problem.

To emphasise my last post, this happens with the *default theme* with *no
adjustments* to the custom CSS. The error is caused by the 'controls'
attribute of the HTML tag, and shows up when the Tiddler is opened.
It happens with any story view as well.

Example code within a normal Tiddler:

Your browser does not support the video tag.

I was tempted to use CSS to hide all error messages entirely, but even
though the message is not visible, HTML gets added over and over. This
could be considered a memory leak because there would not be any ability to
close them, eventually causing a slow browser for extended sessions with a
lot of video content.

Some way to suppress that specific error would be nice.

You know what, this only proves an old adage from my native language. It

happened here.I reached out and found a solution. Ancients were right.

Here are the facts of the case:

1. I am on windows 10, chrome browser which I just checked, is
up-to-date.
2. I was using the default saver, and I was over writing my file on the
disk.
3. The file was physically located in Google drive folder, which is in
sync all the time
4. I had been making notes since morning and periodically I pressed the
save button and overwrote the local file.
5. I remember the dialog box warning for overwriting coming up, and I
saying yes to it. I remember the sound of the warning too. (this makes me
feel sure that I did save my file a couple of times at least)

12. I searched my windows machine to see if I could find any local file

[tw5] Re: Lost data for the first time in maybe a decade

2019-03-12 Thread passingby
Hi Tony,

Thanks for inputting. The thing is, between 12.30 pm and 5 pm, I am sure I
saved a couple of times, and even if I saved a previous version, the time
timestamp shows 12.30 pm, as if the local file wan not touched at all in
this while. This is what I am finding spooky.

And you are right about timimi. I LOVED timimi plugin. In my old laptop I
was using a previous version of it. This, my current laptop is a new one (
Acer Aspire 5) and I chose not to install an old version of timimi (and
last I checked Timimi was not out for chrome yet) and therefore all this
mess.

But now I have installed Tiddlydrive plugin and it seems to be working
well. I have to open my TW through google drive web interface and choose
tiddlydrive as the application to open. It saves automatically, so every
commit is saved. I am liking it so far.

I did. The timestamp found on google drive web interface matched (I checked
at that time) with the one which is on the local file on the hard disk. It
was around 12.30 pm. And I closed my laptop at 5 pm in the evening.

[tw5] Toolmap additions

2019-03-12 Thread David Gifford
Hi all

I will be leaving tomorrow for a week at a work retreat. But I caught up, I
think, on adding the many interesting recent tools to the TiddlyWiki
toolmap (https://dynalist.io/d/zUP-nIWu2FFoXH-oM7L7d9DM)

1. SNR plugin - added to Searching tools
2. Repopup - added to Navigation - Dropdowns, overlays, popups and sliders
3. Volant - added to Navigation - Dropdowns, overlays, popups and sliders
4. Engine - added to Layout/UI - General
5. Mentat - added to Layout/UI - General
6. Mindfulness topic modeling - added to Educational - examples of
organizing and presenting content
7. Anchor links using HTML - added to Links, linking and to Navigation -
Tables of contents and outliners

[I already started playing yesterday with #7! I have been wanting something
like this for some time. See
http://articulos.giffmex.org/sab/templates/anchors.template.html for a
template I created for myself for using anchor IDs in TW.]

If any of the above items need to be added to additional categories, feel
free to reply on this thread and I will get to it as able.

One tool got left behind: I am not sure what to do with TW Components.
Maybe someone can either suggest categories to put it under, or maybe
someone whom I gave access to, can add it to the right category/ies in the
toolmap? Or perhaps it is a matter of adding each component separately?
Anyway, I am sure they are helpful tools, but I don't have time today to
spend tinkering with them to figure out what they are and where they go in
the toolmap.

Blessings,

Dave

Re: [tw5] Re: Paragraph tags in layout

2019-03-12 Thread Arlen Beiler
It turns out that the fix requires only six lines of code!

Well, OK, six lines spread across six files. It's pretty obvious that all
user-generated content is inside a tiddler body in the story river, so we
just turn on auto-generated paragraphs inside the tiddler body in the story
river (and in the edit preview). If someone is advanced enough to use it
anywhere else, they definitely know how to use the set widget to set one
variable. You can also turn it off for one tiddler in the story river using
the same method.

https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyWiki5/pull/3854

Tada!

Well, OK, I will grant you that it might require a tiny bit of tweaking to
adjust the CSS styles, but now that we're liberated, that should be fun! :)

Enjoy!

[tw5] Re: Unilink and my possibly unrealistic wants...

2019-03-12 Thread Diego Mesa
Hey Mario,

In my mind the consistenct of unilink has been:

What-I-Want-To-Display

I frequently title my tiddlers their "full correct title", but rarely do I
want to actually type them out, hence me giving them aliases. In Stephen's
first post, he mentioned giving every tiddler an alias of its title,
allowing you to use unilink unmodified. I like this conceptual approach
better, where unilink could behind the scenes, have an option to treat all
tiddlers as if they already have a "Shadow alias" of their title. This also
maintains the consistency I mentioned above

Hi,

There is 1 more problem. Searching for case insensitive titles will produce
2 or more links if titles "overlap" eg: This Title and this Title
will both match ?l at the moment.

The user will be responsible here!

[tw5] Re: Unilink and my possibly unrealistic wants...

2019-03-12 Thread PMario
Hi Ste, and everyone interested,

I did create an experimental version, (which I won't publish atm), that has
the following functions.

? ... default alias link
?t ... use alias and display title
?c ... use alias and display caption
?s ... use alias and display subtitle
?myField ... use alias and display field: myField

and new:

?l ... lower letter L ... case insensitive title search ... l ..
for lazy

I think you can spot the inconsistency. ... The first 5 possibilities work
with "aliases" definitions and show fields. This one works with the title.
:/

I could use ! ... BUT there is not enough visual difference
between "the pipe" | and the "exclamation mark" ! eg: |!

AND the default meaning in a wikitext link is title
... So the new thing is wrong order. ... So I don't like it.

An other possibility would be to use [lazy[title]], or [?[title]]

The point is: It can be done and I'm willing to implement it, because I
think it makes sense.

The question is: How should the wikitext look like? <--- Feedback needed

have fun!

Oww, It's very interesting how this query reveals TW5's history.

I can intuit sometimes where a will be generated, but if within and/or
around a <$list> it seems pretty unpredictable. Still workable though and
not really that bothersome. In fact it helps sometimes when I'm too lazy to
add top and bottom paddings to divs.

Re: [tw5] Re: Paragraph tags in layout

2019-03-12 Thread PMario
Hi,

The problem with the existing mechanism is, that "whitespace matters" for a
good reason, as Jeremy explained. The backside of the coin bites us with UI
generation. ...

The TW UI has grown over time quite a bit. We have about 300 shadow
tiddlers, that match the search term $:/core/ui. At the early stages, there
was no possibility to trim whitespace, which helps to make UI code more
readable - now. .. But it's only available in the latest versions.

The main problem now is, that the base CSS contains a lot of hardcoded
paddings and margins, that are needed to fix exactly this problem. ... So
if we change the UI code, we would also need to modify the base.css code,
which will create a compatibility problem.

I think it should be done, but it's a process and it won't be fast. It's a
lot of work, to do it right. ... BUT it would be worth it in the long run

have fun!

Re: [tw5] Re: Paragraph tags in layout

2019-03-12 Thread Jeremy Ruston
TiddlyWiki Classic didn’t generate proper paragraph tags; it just rendered a
tag wherever there was a line break. In response to criticisms about that,
from the beginning I tried to make TW5 generate paragraph tags in the same way
that Markdown does. (Hence the requirement for double line break to terminate a
paragraph).

It was then a bit later that I was successful in my experiments to use wikitext
to generate the UI of TW5 as well as just the bodies of tiddlers. By that time
the generation of tags was entrenched and so I just worked around it with a
combination of CSS and carefully crafted wikitext.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

[tw5] Re: Lost data for the first time in maybe a decade

2019-03-12 Thread JD
Hi,

I love that we are now on different realities because of this problem,
which has also happened to me... But maybe your problem might really have
been alien in nature?

I also use the download saver method, overwriting the same file and then
once in a while saving to a backup location. All of this on Google Drive,
too, like you.

And you know what, sometimes Google Drive does this thing where it looks
like it has saved the file... until you look closely at the bottom bar of
the browser where it says "Failed - Insufficient permissions". Trouble with
this is you have to delete the file, wait for the deletion to sync and then
re-save. Mendokusai! Most worrying is, it looks exactly as if the file
actually saved.

Maybe this is what happened? Well anyway, my condolences to your lost data.

[tw5] Re: Paragraph tags in layout

2019-03-12 Thread BurningTreeC

Hi Arlen, JD

those paragraphs apparently are generated by the wiki parser when it
encounters new-lines / whitespace

that's useful when writing text within a tiddler to get actual new lines in
the rendered result when:

```
text
more text
```

but for ui parts it's not always desirable. at some points the core ui
actually uses it without explicitely adding span or div or p elements

just consider that if it's a vnd.tiddlywiki tiddler and there's no
\whitespace trim pragma on top, such new lines will generate paragraphs

you can however put a \whitespace trim on top of the tiddler (and
separately within macro definitions inside that tiddler) .. I don't know if
there's a \rules pragma which can be used to switch paragraphs off

Hi admls,

Wow! This is so cool! The tiddlers stay within the browser when resizing
the window, and it looks so easy to style!

This will change my desktop tw-ing habits. No longer do I need to keep a
separate notepad.exe running as a clipboard when I can use a tiddler served
through Mentat instead! Aah... am already thinking of the efficiency this
will add to my workflow...

Thank you so much for sharing!

Re: [tw5] Re: Plugin tiddlers non-functional until opened and saved

2019-03-12 Thread Adam Sherwood
Hi Mohammad,

That's really interesting. The place I noticed the phenomenon was in a
tiddler being used as a template as well. I'm going to check out the filter
issue that Jeremy suggested when I get the chance later. But I suspect
that's probably it in my case. It would make sense that the filter would
work prior to the plugin being packaged, not work post packaging, and then
work again once I open the tiddler and hit the checkmark (effectively
overwriting it and making it not a plugin tiddler anymore). I don't know if
you used a similar process, but I'm guessing that that probably it in my
case.

Best wishes,

admls

I'm running into a puzzling problem and am curious if someone could explain
it to me. I'm trying to change the layout of the TiddlyWiki UI using CSS
but I keep running into p tags at random places that completely break the
proper flow of the layout. I can't figure out what's causing it but it's
all over the core, not just in my code, so I'm not sure what they're for.
Thanks

Hi Mohammad

That sounds like the same issue: you’ve got tiddlers in the plugin that are not
showing up in some filter somewhere due to the filter being coded to exclude
shadow tiddlers.

Thanks again for sharing this.

I tried to figure out the necessary tiddlers / system tiddlers to get my

like only the boot.js, bootprefix.js and bootprefix1.js are not enough.
Could you suggest which tiddlers are also need to be included?

into plugin and it used a viewtemplate.
It did not work until I opened and saved it. Example is sticky footer in
Shiraz plugin!

I did not fount the reason and hope Jeremy gives his comment on this.

[tw5] Re: Suggestions for stand-alone, mobile TW files?

2019-03-12 Thread JD
Oh wow, thanks Mohammad! Although Ml is really just an interface to
manipulate and present the fields of tiddlers (through the perspective of
an expense tracker)

Ah, to access the Tiddlywiki control panel you'd have to go to Tiddlywiki
mode itself, ( Manage > Looks & TW, click the motovun jack icon... on a
side note, I am in love with the word Motovun, sounds so rpg, doesn't it?)

The thought is, for this particular plugin, to just save this html file in
your android phone and run it on the Android apps. To do Tiddlywiki things
you have to go to Tiddlywiki mode. Perhaps I should add an option for
people who might not work this way. I really have no idea how other people
work with Tiddlywiki hehehe

Hi Archizona

Drag and drop functionality is included in the TW core. All that the shim
plugin does is add support for older browsers that don’t natively support drag
and drop. So you’ll only need the plugin if drag and drop doesn’t work on your
device without it.

You can see whether drag and drop is working by trying to rearrange the entries
in the “open” tab of the sidebar. If that doesn’t work then likely you need the
shim plugin.

Best wishes

The rawmarkup mechanism is a means for plugins to insert snippets of code in
the main TW HTML file. It is used by some plugins to include external scripts
and setup configuration etc.

If you’re not using rawmarkup tiddlers it’s not so obvious what might be going
wrong.

When you say “open them and save them again” are you referring to the tiddlers
within your plugins? If so, it sounds like some of your filter expressions are
only picking up “real” tiddlers, and not shadow tiddlers.

If you want to get all tiddlers tagged “foo” including shadow tiddlers you need
a filter like this:

[all[shadows+tiddlers]tag[foo]]

[tw5] Macro parameters may contain variable substitutions

2019-03-12 Thread Arlen Beiler
I just discovered something that I think is undocumented but could be
extremely useful! When arguments are passed to the macrocall widget, it
first processes the param substitutions of the macro, AND THEN processes
the variable substitutions. This means that you can pass in a variable
substitution as a paramater, like this:

\define gt(a, b) $a$ $b$ +[nsort[]last[]remove[$b$]]
<$list filter=<> variable="temp">

In case you're curious about the filter, it sorts the two arguments and if
the second one is larger the list will not output a DOM element.

Enjoy!

Re: [tw5] Plugin tiddlers non-functional until opened and saved

2019-03-12 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi admls

Plugins that include rawmarkup tiddlers do indeed require saving and reloading
twice before they work properly. The first save/reload loads the plugin, and
the second gives the plugin a chance to write the necessary rawmarkup tiddlers.

Jeremy.

That tiddler describes a plugin called "Mobile Drag and Drop Shim Plugin" to be
found in the official plugin library; you can install it using control panel.

The link to the source code is just provided to show the provenance of the code.

Having said all of that, I think that all modern mobile platforms now support
