Hey Tony, having trouble even loading/starting the tiddlydesktop app--the
video instruction is for MAc, and I'm in windows. there is no cat icon in
mine, and the only executable file with an icon in the folder is nw.exe and
when i click that, nothing happens. Where is the exe file to open the

[tw5] Re: Image visability and user-friendliness

2019-07-02 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
You can drag and drop images into your TW (at least on Firefox ... don't
know about the others).

On Firefox, you can also use the built-in screen shot tool and copy the
text to the clipboard. Then go to your TW and paste. Import. Rename.

These methods are easy, but in the past they came with the caveat that
images will quickly bulk up your TW file and slow it down. TW 5.1.20 &
prerelease has indexing built in, allowing much larger files, though
performance is still going to depend on things like system RAM. You might
want to experiment with the prerelease and see how it works for you.

Another approach is to use node.js and lazy-loading, so image files only
have to be loaded when needed.

Good luck

I use svg's (for map & diagrams) with links to tiddlers embedded into the

 (Deprecated)

-- normally, full or shortened standard urls are used but "#" allows you ro
target individual tiddlers inside the wiki

that "#tiddler title" may cue you into what will result-- a permalink link
in the browser address bar.

1- the permalink url in the browser address bar will change with each
different svg embedded link
2- if you close the tiddler that gets opened, the embedded svg link will
not open it again while the browser address bar contains its permalink url,
making it look like that embedded link doesn't work any longer

[tw5] Image visability and user-friendliness

2019-07-02 Thread Kelli Jae Baeli
As a recovering OneNote user, i really need to place *images* in tiddlers
regularly, and be able to see them, and it seems that's a feature that
doesn't exist. I hoped it would be as simple as uploading into a tiddler,
but i see that it would be cumbersome to overload one file with the number
of images i will need.

By way of explanation, I am using this for personal and business, but will
probably not be sharing any of it. I wanted something to keep track of a
wide range of complex information, and maintain control over it, without
fear that some software company was going to close down or change things
adversely, or charge me stupid amounts for the privilege of using their
precious software.
{sorry...Ms. Betty Bitterness just took over. I'm back now}
So...I'm an Indie Author and publisher, and as such, i need information
about book files, to include a thumbnail of the covers. I also take
screenshots of rankings and publication data...I suppose I could stop doing
screenshots for some things, but that's always been a go-to method of
saving info from other sites. Maybe there's another way. Still need those
covers though.
I hope this won't be a deal breaker for me, as i think TW is exactly what
I've been needing. Hopefully there's a workaround. i would think it's odd
not to have that ability, since it's all html/css and that's meant for
webpages, which are full of images...but then, this TW application is being
used differently i suppose. I understand too many images would bloat the
file and cause issues, but I hope there's a way to fix it. Currently also
working on the issues with many html files and where they're getting saved,
but having an answer to this one would also be a great help.
Appreciate any insight, here. Thanks.

Using TW Desktop, Windows 10, Firefox.

[tw5] Re: horizontal outline/menu (for RPG & MMORPG)

2019-07-02 Thread A Gloom
Here is a json file containing a good portion of the tiddlers for a working
copy (full 1st & 2nd columns, and 2 of potential 24 3rd column displays
("Fire" tabs) and for page contents display. No plugins needed, it has a
simple custom stylesheet thats explained in an instructions riddler. Just
import the json file into a blank wiki and a sidebar tab (#Empowerment)
containing all files and instructions will be created. The file of interest
will be MASTER INDEX (vMenu)
(#empowerments master menu), the parent/containing tiddler for all the
others.

Don't all tiddlers still have to be searched even if you hit that best
case? Or how do you "cut" a filter search? My impression is that every
filter is run "in full".

plugins can use a caching mechanism. So only the first lookup will be

Could this theoretically be "brought to the front" so users could state
"chache this"... maybe even as part of Jermys new "kill the magic black

2019-07-02 Thread Kelli Jae Baeli
thanks so much for your help and all the great information, Tony. And for
making me feel welcome.
You'll be happy to know that i have been Googling, and i have four tabs
open for different help pages right this minute. :)
SOrry about the no title on posts. i thought it picked up on the previous
title, when replying. So when i reply like this, how do i put a title on
it? i can't find where to do that in a reply. (Sorry, again, i'm used to
forums for this stuff, rather than a Google group format).
Anxious to have a look at your link, too. thanks for that. I downloaded
timimi, but haven't installed it yet. not sure if i know how. will have to
look again. I guess i have too may irons in the fire! but that's what is
called NORMAL for me.

By the way, i tried drag and drop and that didn't work--or maybe it just
didn't work the way i imagined it would. :)
Will start another post about images.

I think that's the point. ... You basically need to be able to do all
things in the same way as you do with titles atm.

Accessing the tiddler store using a title is a *single *lookup function,
which is as fast as the browser memory management can make it.

Accessing an alias name needs to iterate over every tiddler in the store
and have a look at the aliases field, if the alias is there.
Worst case: The last tiddler contains the wanted alias. :/
Best case: The first tiddler contains the alias. ... In average that's
slower as directly accessing a title.

plugins can use a caching mechanism. So only the first lookup will be
slower.

In TW 5.1.20 Jeremy introduces an indexing system, that can speed up filter
operations. ... I'll definitely experiment with this new functionality with
the uni-link plugin and aliases. .. The second test should be done with
60.000 tiddlers as Jeremy mentioned in the pull request
.

[tw5] Re: How to return only the first value in field with multiple values?

2019-07-02 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I'm not sure what you mean by "return", but in a list filter you could have

<$list filter="[enlist{!!dates}nth[1]]"/>

Where "dates" is a field containing your date items. This will only work if
your dates are in a format that does not contain space (e.g. something like
2016-02-02)

Good luck

Si,

Space is a normal delimiter so using the enlist operator should separate
each of the dates, and you can use the [[first
operator|https://tiddlywiki.com/#first%20Operator]] and other order
operators to do this kind of manipulation.

The local path (full for directories other than the one your TW is in, or
shortened if its in a subdirectory of the one your TW is in) or file name
if its in the same directory goes into the src just like a url.

The attached tid is for TWScripts or other TW reference wikis, so they can
import a tiddler of the post. There's really no unique code, the post
covers the generic iframe code and a quirk I noticed with the src value.
The gist is if the iframe originally pointed to a http address, trying to
change it to local, the iframe won't reflect the change and will display a
blank iframe.

[tw5] Re: my backstage gone after downloading/installing plugins

2019-07-02 Thread TonyM
Kelli,

Sounds like you are slowly getting the information you need.

I suggest starting a new thread for your image handling issue. A simple
drag and drop can work in most cases however since it gets stored in the
wiki you need to use other methods if you have a lot of images. Normally
once you put in an image you can open the tiddler and see it or use
transclusion to include it elsewhere {{imagetiddlername}} see how the icon
field works.

Tiddlywiki is in some ways simple for what you can do but it is also so
extensive in possibilities, it can also seem overwhelming especially if you
get excited and try to do a lot quickly. If you have not yet I suggest
downloading a copy and working through the documentation found on
tiddlywiki.com, you can add all your own notes: I have a variation of
tiddlywiki.com for teaching yourself
here http://tiddlywiki.psat.com.au/learn/ Download the full copy which
includes all the tiddlywiki.com documentation, ways to take notes, log your
activity and more. If you install Timimi, once downloaded and saved in your
document folders double clicking the file will open it and automatically
save, you will be unlikely to get all those files in your downloads
directory.

Tiddlywiki.com includes links to community resources and teach yourself
information.

Google, Google Google with TiddlyWiki in your search and you will find more
resources.

When posting here it is best to have a heading that describes the issue, so
unless related try and start a thread for each issue, people that help can
see what you need more easily rather than look through a longer post.

We are on your side, and always learn from new starters so you will not be
"shown the door". You are now part of our community.

Regards
Tony

[tw5] Re: Any good way to see if one version is higher than another?

2019-07-02 Thread Mat
Thank you Mark.

The problem is that it has to be general enough to compare any two plugins
not only the core. But the two plugins *are* the same plugin, just
different versions. And it is not sure that the plugins follow the x.y.z
format.

Waiting until 5.1.20 is not a problem though.

But I'm thinking that the core has a built in version comparison mechanism
used in import. Is it possible to tap into this perhaps?

Mat, your point got me thinking, and I gave a cursory look at Termux, the
one which TonyM mentioned. I ll have a deeper look at this in coming days

shall start using it. And of course the credit would go to you. :-)

[tw5] Re: Any good way to see if one version is higher than another?

2019-07-02 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I can see how you can do it with two filter loops, and a slight cheat.
Maybe two cheats.

The first cheat is that for most revisions, only the last part of the
dotted notation is significant (e.g. 5.1.*20 -- *only the last dotted
number has change for the last 4 (?) years).

The 2nd cheat is that you need TW 5.1.20prerelease, because it has a new
split operator.

So you could have an outer filter with three runs. The first run finds the
revision number or the first plugin and splits it by the period (.) and
then uses the nth operator to find the 3rd rev portion. Repeat for the 2nd
plugin. Then use the numerical sort operator and take the last tiddler,
which will be the largest rev number. Put that number in a variable.

Then for the 2nd, inner filter, use the regexp operator with the variable
to find the plugin with a matching rev number in the 3rd dotted notation
position.

Tweak as necessary. For instance, the variable from list #1 may need to be
modified by a macro in order to make it ready for the regular expression.

No, it can't be trusted. As for me personally, I have far more important
and life affecting data like passwords and stuff outside of my tiddlywiki
in hands of corporation who are strong and powerful in material world.

I don't think we can trust our own operating systems or Google or Apple or
the banks or even the US government, who can order these companies to fall
in line with their policies.

If there is important data, one should read up on everything relevant and
make one's choice. I don't know much.

There is, to kill off your first idea, no "greaterthan" filter operator.

I don't want to do an action to set some value for calculation, i.e it is
ideally only a filter evaluation.

I currently keep my TWs in a google drive folder and I open them using
Tiddlydrive app. It works on my windows laptop as well as my android phone.
I think it must work everywhere. You ll have to install tiddlydrive app to
your google drive account. Open a TW by right clicking and choosing
tiddlydrive as the opening app. Once set it open straight away on double
click. On android I have to go to context menu and choose 'open with' and
then 'tiddlydrive'.

Hope this helps.

[tw5] Re: my backstage gone after downloading/installing plugins

2019-07-02 Thread Birthe C
Hi Kelli,

If you have not installed a saver for tiddlywiki, your browser saves
everything to your download folder. At your first post you told us you used
Firefox. If so you could intall timimi in your browser.

If you do not use a saver, you are using the download saver. If so you can
overwrite the same file to avoid getting so many. It is alright to do that
for now, as you can move your file later, and open it from Tiddlydesktop
(after deleting the one you have now and reinstalling).

I think it will be a good idea to install the plugins you wanted in your
empty tiddlywiki file before opening it in Tiddlydektop.

That is a lot of files for sure. Try to open the file that was written to
your system at the latest time. I am not using Windows myself, but I am
sure you must have an option for that. Open that file in your browser. That
way you find out if every tiddler you wrote is there. If they are you
should be able to export your tiddlers from the sidebar tab called tools.
chose export as json.

Download https://tiddlywiki.com/empty
Reinstall the plugins you wanted.
import you tiddlers from the json file.
Finally delete Tiddlydekstop and reinstall it.

open tiddlydektop and select open from file.

Good luck,
Birthe

LOL! I copied it straight from where I have the problem (here

I used wikify because I tried with some filter attribute in set which
probably failed, i.e gave brackets, so resorted to wikify.

But yes, it should be $set

That’s correct. The variable tid is inherited by the action string, but will
not have been updated before execution. (One of the reasons is to avoid a
potential inconsistency: a result of refreshing the tree to get that variable
updated might plausibly be to cause that entire select widget to be removed
from the tree).

You probably knew I was going to ask this, but what is the wikify widget here
for? Why aren’t you using <$set name=tid text={{$:/temp/addaliasfield}}>?

the action string will not be updated to reflect the new value of the target
tiddler. So you need to make sure you directly compute anything that depends on
that tiddler.

[tw5] SelectWidget does actions before selection is set...?

2019-07-02 Thread Mat
The SelectWidget has a
parameter named "tiddler" where the selected title is stored.

I want to perform an action to the selected item, so I'm using the
SelectWidget *action* attribute.

However, when selecting a title in the list it seems the actions are
performed *before* the title is added to the state tiddler.

How can the actions be made to affect the selected title?

(Currently, the first time the SelectWidget is used, it triggers an action
without anything being set, as if it was a separate action widget button.
And selecting a second title triggers the action to be performed on the
*first* selection title - !?)

You’re quite right, I’d missed the select=“0” in Xaviers post.

I think the request was to remove the brackets which the filter
transclusion between quotation marks seems to do.

Thanks for the explanation. I probably over use wikify but I often don't
see any other way out. This problem with extra brackets is one such
recurrence so the $set technique was valuable.

I don’t think your wikify widget will deal with adding the double square
brackets.

Anyhow, wikify widget is intrinsically slow because it requires the text to be
parsed and rendered on each refresh cycle. It should be avoided unless there is
no alternative.

There’s only a small number of use cases for the wikify widget, and they all
boil down to a need to manipulate the results of wikification other than to
just display them.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

I do not believe a reinstall will touch your files however compress them
all into a zipfile as a backup and move that elsewhere for safety.

I do not think the number of files is caused by tiddlydesktop. But I will
review your post tomorrow. +12 hours.

Hi Kelli

No. Deleting the TiddlyDesktop application data folder just deletes all the
settings. The wiki list is cleared (but not the actual wiki files themselves)
so you’ll need to re-add your wikis to the list. It is the recommended
procedure if you want to undo changes to the backstage wiki.

[tw5] Re: my backstage gone after downloading/installing plugins

2019-07-02 Thread Kelli Jae Baeli
Tony--thanks for you helpI didn't know i wasn't supposed to touch the
backstage on desktop. It's not exactly clear on much of this when you're
just getting started. Once i understand the filing system and the
particulars, i'm sure it will all make sense.
[image: 2019-07-02 07_51_10-Open.png] so..burning
question: *Will deleting and reinstalling tiddly desktop affect any of the
files i've already created*? I am not about to start over entering all that
information again. And here's what those files look like...so I'll wait for
an answer to that, before i do anything. I don't want to lose several days
of work. It does sound like using desktop is still the way to go for me,
all things considered. At the risk of belaboring the point, I just want to
be sure I'm not endangering the work/tiddler-creation I've already done.

I'm still not sure why these main(#).html files are in the download
directory, nor why there are so many, nor if this means all my data is
spread out over all those files, and not consolidated in just one. (or ARE
they? and if so, where is THAT file?)

I've downloaded the empty.html file and created copies of it, and renamed
it to a couple other things, (literati.html and personalbiz.html) but those
are in the Tiddlywiki directory with the original main files; and all my
other files, as I said, are in my downloads folder. Maybe because my
browser is set to save to the downloads folder, i assume?--if that's true,
then if i change the location for downloading in firefox, does that mean
all the other stuff i download will end up with TW files, instead of the
downloads folder?

I also downloaded Timimi as you suggested, but haven't dealt with that yet.

I have more questions but only because i can't seem to find this
information anywhere else.
one of the most pressing is about images...i really need to place images in
tiddlers regularly, and be able to see them, and it seems that's a feature
that doesn't exist. this could be a deal breaker for me, but hopefully
there's a workaround. i would think it's odd not to have that ability,
since it's all html/css and that's meant for webpages, which are full of
images...but then, this TW application is being used differently i suppose.
Okay, forgive my ruminations. I still appreciate any help, even if it's to
point me toward helpful documentation (or toward the door :)

Ed,

The quick answer is to place the filter inside triple braces without
surrounding quotes

Name={{{ filter }}}

I am answering from my mobile and its not so easy to test you code. Have a go
and let me know.

[tw5] Re: Switch a Tag among few tiddlers

2019-07-02 Thread Mohammad
I think this may be a solution

\define applyTag()

<$list filter="[search:title[exmp65/data]tag[exmp65]]">
<$fieldmangler>
<$action-sendmessage $message="tm-remove-tag" $param="exmp65"/>

<$tiddler tiddler={{exmp65/state}}>
<$fieldmangler>
<$action-sendmessage $message="tm-add-tag" $param="exmp65"/>

\end

;How swith a tag among a set of tiddlers? Only one tiddler can have the tag
at a time!
: The solution is to use `select` widget and an action macro

The below example demonstrate how to switch a tag among set of tiddlers.
The code has two parts

# select widget to choose one tiddler among set of tiddlers
# action macro to set tag to the selected tiddler and remove it from
previous tiddler

Here for this example, tag `exmp65` between three tiddlers is switched.
Only one tiddler has the tag at a time. The action macro called `applyTag`.

<$macrocall $name="wikitext-example-without-html"
src="""<$select
  tooltip="select a tiddler"
  tiddler="exmp65/state"
  field="text"
  actions=<>
>
<$list filter="[search:title[exmp65/data]]" variable="tid">
> > <>

"""/>

This may be not optimized code but work!

2019-07-02 Thread Mohammad
The dummy solution is to

   - remove tag from all tiddlers
   - set the tag for select tiddler

The bad part is while only one tiddler has a tag, but I have to process all
of them.

Sorry! You are right I forgot to ask the question in original post!
I send two more posts after that and asked my question!
In real case they are tens of tiddlers and may grow dynamically all have no
Tag except one!
Then user select another one so this new new gets the Tag and from the
previous Tag is removed!

I want to use the full link simply because it is easier to copy and paste

But you can also take the link and [{!!url}removeprefix[

I have tried both

But neither of those work. I don't think I understand how to include a

[tw5] Re: Presenting: AliasTids - one tiddler, many titles

2019-07-02 Thread TonyM
I agree on the need for aliases but the caption field satisfies part of the
issue, like friendlier names, perhaps that's why we still need to use
macros or plugins to address this. Just saying.

Since tiddlywiki handles tiddler titles in many ways people's expectations
can be quite high to get the same features with any alias system.

[tw5] Re: Switch a Tag among few tiddlers

2019-07-02 Thread TonyM
Mohammad,

I was wondering if you post was a question.

I have gone down this path before but now days I would swap it around

Have a tiddler tagged

   - Tid1
   - Tid2
   - Tid3
   - Tid4

Lets call this the set-tiddler

Then use a filter in a select widget to set a field to only one of the
above values tagging[set-tiddler]

Then if you want you could change the select filter to not even list the
currently selected tiddler, just the balance.

Then if you get smart you could make next, previous, first and last
buttons. I will do this one day as an essential code pattern but not right
now.

Regards
Tony

Thanks. I do note that mklaubers solution is js based whereas mine is
wikitext which I see as an advantage for hackability (...because I don't
know js and a user shouldn't have to of course).

Yes, IMO the core does need some aliases solution. It is actually

What "is" an alias in your solution. Is it a non-existing tiddler whose
title title appear in any other tiddlers 'aliases' field?

You say "searchable like regular titles" but IMO if you type in an alias
name the search results should probably only show the real tiddler as a
result. If you type in some content (from the original tiddler), the alias
names should probably not show up .

G'dang! I hadn't looked at mklaubers plugin. It does seem very similar...
and possibly even better, in that clicking an alias navigates to the real
tiddler. My version shows the content of the real tiddler but uses the

I must investigate if I should simply deprecate my variant.

[tw5] Re: Presenting: AliasTids - one tiddler, many titles

2019-07-02 Thread TonyM
Mario,

> There's no need to create a human un-friendly ID.
>

There is if you establish relationships to other tiddlers based on the
title then rename it.

   - The problem with title is it may be always unique, but it can change.
So is something really unique if does not remain the same over time?
   - An example is using the Qualify macro to set states

For this reoccurring issue I built a simple way of creating a unique ID but
it needs to be button driven and thus requires user intervention to stamp a
tiddler.

   1. Take the current tiddlers full serial created date
   2. Check if it is unique,
  1. if not add 1 microsecond re do step 2
  2. If unique set the field unique-id to the fullserial+N
   3. Use the contents of unique-id when ever you want to link something to
   the current tiddler
   4. We could have a qualify macro that uses the unique-ID to do so.

This just needs to be made into a javascript and placed into the core
create tiddler with a toggle to switch it on. No need to retrofit tiddlers
already created, but easy with a button.

If no one else does this I will eventually out of frustration, need to
finish my javascript and tiddlywiki dev learnings.

Regards
Tony

[tw5] Did I find a bug? Or am I using it wrong?

2019-07-02 Thread Stephan Hradek
For my mailto-link I want to supply a tiddlername and a linktext to a macro.

For this I thought it would be a good ideat to do it in the form of

{{the tiddler with the mail template -- the linktext||mailto}}

So the idea is to have a mailtext in the tiddler (the tiddler with the mail
template) and to create a mailto-link of the form

mailto:…;>the linktext

So for this I need to split the text at " -- ", but this only worked, when
my tiddler's title does not contain a blank. Otherwise it fails.

Here is a simple tiddler for you to test:

<$set name="testtext" value="the tiddler with the mail template -- the
linktext">

<$set name="left" filter="[splitbefore[ -- ]removesuffix[ -- ]]">

<$set name="right" filter="[removeprefixremoveprefix[ --
]]">

Original: <$text text=<>/>

Left of ' -- ': <$text text=<>/>

Right of ' -- ': <$text text=<>/>

The output is

Original: the tiddler with the mail template -- the linktext

Left of ' – ': [[the tiddler with the mail template]]

Right of ' – ':

Without spaces the output is

Original: the_tiddler_with_the_mail_template -- the linktext

Left of ' – ': the_tiddler_with_the_mail_template

Right of ' – ': [[the linktext]]

So for some reason there are square brackets added to the variable's value
which will make my nice logic fail.

Is there a way around this?
