That is not necessarily a good thing. I would rather say it may be risky (not
tested well enough).

I don't and I am not planning one for the moment. I just don't see why I
should buy yet another buggy (and low performance) CPU.

> Just my two cents for ya...

Thanks. My 2 cents on less popular distros would be the community support. I
have been using SUSE (now openSUSE) for many years and I really like it. 10+
years ago I also used Red Hat for a while, tried Debian (and couldn't stick
to it, looked too difficult at that time). What I like about SUSE is not only
the ease of use and stability but also the great community support and the
speed at which bugs are handled. Yesterday for example I found a critical bug
in the latest NVIDIA driver and reported it. A few hours later people have
been finding (and perhaps already found) ways to fix it. Also when more
people are using/testing something that makes it better verified. I am not
sure if exotic distros can offer anything like that - that's my main concern
with them.

[Trisquel-users] Kernel Panic Using Virt-Manager on Trisquel and libreboot

2018-02-14 Thread goodstuff9
I am attempting to install PureOS 8.0 (beta) on a libreboot Taurinus laptop
running Trisquel 8 using virt-manager. Everytime I try to create the PureOS
virtual machine, I get a black screen filled with a whole lot of meaningless
stuff on it. The screen freezes so all I can do is restart the laptop. Each
time I've attempted this, the "stuff" on the frozen black screen is
different, the only thing that appears to be constant is the term "Kernel
Panic".

I tried searching online to figure out what this means and what I should do,
but there doesn't seem to be much related to Trisquel and libreboot, and what
I did find was FAR above what I am able to comprehend. (I am NOT a computer
person, I'm just an ordinary guy who would like to make this work.)

How can I find out - in terms I can understand - what is wrong, and what I
should do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

ETS does too. The current ETS kernel is 4.4, and KPTI appeared in 4.4.110.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Free software foundations problems

2018-02-14 Thread calmstorm

I have distro hopped between devuan, parabola and trisquel a few times.

But I finally found what I was looking for in hyperbola. One of which being,
the quick updates feature. The other being, the packages are updated way
more often then devuan. And the last being, its all free software man!

Not to mention for me I am not fond of systemd... some people aren't. I am
one of them.

Plus the hardened packages are the cherry on top!

:)

If you need help accessing wifi after you boot into a dm such as lxdm, there
is an easy way, nmtui! at least in hyperbola anyways.

But let me tell you something, if you have a libreboot laptop, and are
patient enough to do this all at a reasonable pace, FDE!

if not, and you know how to do encrypted /home and root,

then by all means, do so.

But in my opinion, its easy to install following the instructions as long as
you don't want encryption. Although calamares is in the works...

But yeah, till that is done, I highly recommend being patient with encrypted
install. Their libreboot fde install is working nicely, but anything in
between may be a little bit harder.

Just my two cents for ya...

But that last line about God, yes, if by that you are saying that because of
the old testament I agree wholeheartedly. But there is a reason for a new

One book shows that we should obey and honor him and shows his mercy and

Yes, things you cannot see can be dangerous. But how do you know what you
see and what you don't see. People are sometimes deceptive let's say and make
something that looks nice and shiny but has all this crap lurking within to
spy on you, etc,

But that aside, I completely agree with you on amd and intel. They are both

something far beyond all the others.

We disagree on spiritual stuff, and agree on matters of free software mostly

Why should the communication go through "your own network"? Those are your
words. Isn't your interlocutor entitled to control the network carrying the
communication as much as you are? Should you and your interlocutor build a

Should a network be built for each pair of contacts?

Meltdown and Spectre are two recently discovered vulnerabilities that affect
many computers.

https://meltdownattack.com

You have a Mac if I recall correctly, so you have an Intel chipset and are
affect by both Meltdown and Spectre. Meltdown has been patched in recent
versions of the Linux kernel, although unfortunately it will slow down your
machine a bit. There is no patch for Spectre at this time, but it can be
mitigated.

You can install a more recent kernel from jxself's repo.

I wonder why it is so difficult for you to understand that it is *not*
quantumgravity's point. He even started his reply to your question ("which
online service provider runs on RYF hardware with FOSS firmware and
software?") with "No, that's not at all the question". The central point of
his reply is:

Even if he does run only free software, he could still mistreat you by
copying your mails, reading them, selling your data etc (just examples here).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a perfect method to guard our communication?

1. I don't think that was what he meant.

You can set up a communicative network with more people than yourself and
still be isolated from the Internet. I think that was what he meant.

2. You say: Free software end-to-end encryption, using good-enough cyphers
and protocols, is the solution. It works on the Internet.

How come there are people talking about encryption not being safe? And may I
ask for an elaboration on why that is the "solution"?

3. You say: That is for the data. For the meta-data, the best we have is Tor.

May I ask what you mean by this?

[Trisquel-users] Re : Is there a perfect method to guard our communication?

2018-02-14 Thread lcerf
With your own isolated network you would only communicate with yourself,
i.e., not communicate. Free software end-to-end encryption, using
good-enough cyphers and protocols, is the solution. It works on the
Internet. That is for the data. For the meta-data, the best we have is Tor.
Both solutions imply compromises: user-friendliness and performance are
traded for privacy.

The email provider does NOT run only free software. NO computer in this world
does that as of today. I wonder why it is so difficult for most people here
to understand this. Firmware (Intel ME, microcode, BIOS) IS a program and it
is NOT free. And there is NO online service provider running on CPUs without
Spectre and Meltdown. NONE. It has been demonstrated by top security experts
that all these systems are extremely vulnerable and to this moment there are
only mitigations because fixes require actual new hardware. You won't fix
that with with recommendations, endorsements, theories, philosophies or links
from gnu.org.

The problem is much bigger than your petty little computer. I wonder why you
don't see it. There is no real freedom or respect for it in is such
environment because there are no devices which do this, i.e. it is physically
impossible. If you don't have the freedom to communicate privately - who
cares about anything else? The biggest issue today is surveillance.

Accept it or create something new and give it to humankind.
