[TV orNotTV] Kim's Convenience

2016-10-12 Thread Doug Eastick
CBC has been pumping up the promo's for their latest sitcom - Kim's
Convenience. It's about a Korean family that runs a convenience store in
Toronto. They were supposed to air the pilot on Sunday, but rescheduled
due to the Blue Jay's ball game (not the debate).

I just watched it and LOL'd a few times. I asked my 20-yr old daughter to
watch and after the first 10 mins she said "I don't find this as funny as
you do" and then went to another room.

If you can find the pilot online, I suggest you watch it. There is a
reference to Anderson Cooper. The main thing I was thinking while
watching it was "oh there's so many of the trump-states that would not like
this".

If you can't find it online to watch, then maybe try this link I might keep
up for a week or so..

700 mb .MKV file. Use VLC player to watch it if your default doesn't
do it for you. please be gentle and don't share this link. I have to pay
for data.

All I know is what I read on the internet. Still, it would be amusing to
see NBC, which has its own news division, suing a reporter and demanding to
see their sources under threat of prison.

There was an apprentice contestant on CNN last night that was corroborating
many of the sexist things trump said. She also said that she's speaking
now because the 5 million penalty expired after five years.

Who knows of that's true but it's what she said.

Just to keep this updated, Mark Burnett said that he sold his

In any case the $5 million threat was never made.

I always assumed that an employee would be the one to hand over footage.
And it has to be done anonymously, meaning that the news organization
cannot know the source. This came up when the NYT published the Trump state
tax return with the $916M loss. The reporter went to her snail mail box in
the office and saw the manila envelope. If she knew who sent it, NYT's
legal department would have forced her to sit on it or find another way to
get it out in public. If she knew the source, in a courtroom she could be
compelled to reveal it of face contempt charges.

So in this case the news organization cannot know the source unless
NBC/MGM/Burnett agree to release the footage which they won't.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Will Billy Bush be hurt by Trump's vulgar comments about women?

2016-10-12 Thread PGage
But the reports I have seen suggest one or more staffers have access to key
footage, which they could release on their own. This would be against the
wishes of whoever ultimately controls it, and the idea is that everyone
signed a release form that exacts a $4or $5M penalty. Presumably whoever
released it would be fired, but the idea is to find a wealthy benefactor
who would pay the penalty.

I suspect that it's less whether someone will risk a Mark Burnett
lawsuit (I'm sure there'd be no shortage of people happy to pay the fine),
as whether someone actually has access to the rushes.

I suspect that NBC only ever took delivery of a finished "tape" of the
show, and that after editing was completed, footage was stored away in some
vault somewhere. It would have been sensitive at the time not least because
of the gameshow element - nobody wanting leaks until the episodes had aired
 - but also because if Trump truly did say shocking things that were cut,
Burnett's team would have been aware of the potential damage even without
him embarking on a political campaign. It would have damaged the show for
one thing, potentially affecting employment prospects of those who worked
 on the show.

Indeed I wonder if the footage even *exists* any longer. It's not hard
to imagine that hard drives or tapes have been wiped. As soon as Trump
stood, I'd imagine that Burnett would either have doubled down on security
of the footage, or expunged it altogether if he is, as reported, a Trump
 supporter.

It will probably all come down to whether an employee somewhere along
the line, took a copy or something incendiary and squirreled it away
 somewhere.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Bayless Sends FS1's Viewership Skyrocketing (Surprisingly)

2016-10-12 Thread Joe Hass
That they've had an audience was never in doubt (see: First Take). What is
dramatic is that Bayless actually brought people to America's Favorite
Scratch Sports Cable Network. Given the Coward/Whitlock "All Takes Matter"*

amazing.

If Trump and Ailes and Bannon form a cable TV channel Bush might get a new
job. Otherwise he's finished in TV or at least pushed off to some low rated

If I'm reading the quote, and I notice the error, there are two places it
can come from. Either the publication made a transcription error, or it was
wrong in the original quote. Adding "[sic]" just tells me whose mistake it
was. I don't see it as criticism, or dickishness.

And if the publication doesn't want to run the error, Bill Partsch has done
a nice job of describing several ways they can get around it.

Most tweets tend to be informal, and are treated as such.

Similarly, just about everything we post here is reasonably informal, and
nobody gets grief for typos in their posts.

That said, if you're making a public statement that you expect to be widely
seen, whether it's on a listserv, on a social medium, or in a press
release, it's incumbent on you to clean up your text. You'll have to live
with whatever errors people point out, and some will be gentler about how
they point them out than others.

Now my relationship to the Twitter is still rocky, and as Joe pointed out,
it may be that a post on Twitter is assumed to be more formal than a post
on a listserv, in which case perhaps my original perception was a bit
