Yes I do use a different separator page for my 4250 than my 4200 for
some reason it didn't matter if I used pcl5 or 6 it wanted slightly
different code. This is the 3rd time in my time using hp's I have had
have a different separator page. Thanks for the feedback. And just FYI
not a lick of issues with this printer

A participant on the QM list serv recently had this to say regarding a
problem someone else was having printing to an HP 2100 series PCL 6
printer:

---QM list msg
I don't know if PCL6 is supported or not but I do know that HP make a
HUGE
change going to PCL6 and it is NOT backwards compatible and does not
support
the old Escape sequences that drove prior versions of PCL. We have had
lots
of problems with old programs that pushed PCL Escape sequences out to
printers.

Is it possible that the HP 4250 printer that Bob Utech

that's why they're not working?

Bill,

Was that on Windows or on .nix?

I have just installed SpoolerPlus on UV 10.2 on RHEL 5.1 and

discovered

that the "text-only" driver in RHEL passes *only* text, nothing else,
which
is just the opposite of the "text-only" driver in Windows - go

figure!

I also tried the raw driver in RHEL and lost all control of data
formatting.

The only driver that has worked so far in RHEL is the HP driver for

an

HP

LaserJet 6P printer, but I haven't yet tried to pass PCL commands to

the

printer thru the HP driver - stay tuned!

Thanks for the information.

Bob,

1.Is this the only PCL command that is not being recognized or

are

all
others also not being recognized?

If all PCL commands (eg. CPI, CPL, LPI, LPP, Orientation, etc.) are
being
ignored, check the Windows printer driver installed with this

printer.

If you are using the HP driver, none of your PCL commands will be

passed

thru to the printer - they will all fail.

If so, you need to create an additional Windows logical printer

I got the error "Cannot bind to the new value member" thrown on the line

  .ValueMember = "CUSTOMER"

I deleted that line, and now things work as expected.

Universe
Basic
program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working

If so, you need to create an additional Windows logical printer
attached
to
the same port as your current HP4250 and install the Generic
Text-only
driver from the Generic manufacturer's list of drivers in Windows
and
assign
a different name to the printer (eg. HP4250TEXT).

2.If this is the only PCL command that is being ignored while
others
are
being recognized, check the sequence of PCL commands in the string
of
PCL
commands that are being sent to the printer.

If you send a PCL command to specify a tray and then follow it with
a
PCL
command to specify a particular paper type and that paper type is
not in
the
same tray as the tray previously specified, the last command
received by
the
printer will be the command that it uses - eg tray 3, paper type
Plain
will
leave your printer at tray 2 according to your settings.

Please contact me directly if this doesn't work.

Rgds,

Dave

Well, that's good news.

I've never installed an HP 2420tn or an HP4250dtn so I can't speak about
that particular driver, but my experience with other HP printers has been
different.

I guess Bob's problem lies somewhere else than with the HP driver.

Thanks for clarifying this issue,

We don't use any indices, so I've never run into that issue, although
I've heard cautionary tales about it many times. Seems like someone
posted in the recent past that the latest versions of UV stopped using
absolute pathnames for the indices, though, and now use relative path
names. I assume that means you can now do an OS level copy without
having to worry about your copied index pointing to the wrong file.

As far as the dynamic file issue, we have quite a few dynamic files, and
I've never had an issue with copying them while the database was idle.
Could be we've just been lucky, but the development area is actively
used for development and training on a daily basis, so that seems
statistically improbable. Is it possible the load counters are
periodically flushed to disk?

Basic

program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working

Bob,

1.Is this the only PCL command that is not being recognized or are all
others also not being recognized?

If all PCL commands (eg. CPI, CPL, LPI, LPP, Orientation, etc.) are being
ignored, check the Windows printer driver installed with this printer.

If you are using the HP driver, none of your PCL commands will be passed
thru to the printer - they will all fail.

If so, you need to create an additional Windows logical printer attached
to

the same port as your current HP4250 and install the Generic Text-only
driver from the Generic manufacturer's list of drivers in Windows and
assign

a different name to the printer (eg. HP4250TEXT).

2.If this is the only PCL command that is being ignored while others
are

being recognized, check the sequence of PCL commands in the string of PCL
commands that are being sent to the printer.

If you send a PCL command to specify a tray and then follow it with a PCL
command to specify a particular paper type and that paper type is not in
the
same tray as the tray previously specified, the last command received by
the
printer will be the command that it uses - eg tray 3, paper type Plain
will

leave your printer at tray 2 according to your settings.

Please contact me directly if this doesn't work.

Dave

I am trying to send a report to the HP4250 printer to tray 3 using PCL

It always defaults to tray 2 when jobs are sent from host Universe no
matter what PCL tray code I use. Any Microsoft Office print jobs work
fine and select the correct trays.
All 3 trays are setup : Default paper size = Letter Tray behavior =
Use requested tray always

 tray3: paper size

I am on Universe 10.1.23 with Windows Server 2003
I have several cases with HP Support concerning this - but they haven't

I am hoping someone in the U2UG has experience doing this ... Any help

If we did a SUSPEND.FILES.ON, does it just suspend the updates and not
mess with any jobs / users logged into the system? If so, that might
work, since we have a third party script to backup to disk right now.
Currently brings down the database though, doing that causes problems
with other batch processes setup.

uvbackup is the official database backup/restore utility. Hardly anybody
uses it though, it's too slow and not very flexible for some. It has the
advantage of performing internal data (structure) file integrity
checking, as part of the backup and internally tagging the files as
backed-up.

You can use a third-party utility and invoke the TCL command
"SUSPEND.FILES ON" to pause updates whilst you do an online backup. Or
break your disk mirror, back that up instead.

Other options to look at are UV Data Replication to backup system with
UV installed/licensed to mirror your production environment. Not a cheap
option in most cases.

Whatever you use, you need to ensure that absolutely no updates are
happening to any of the UniVerse files. And of course you're using a
backup utility which can backup open files on the operating system
you're hosting on.

Re: [U2] HP 4250dtn printer using PCL commands from Universe Basic program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working

2008-05-14 Thread Bob Rasmussen
Besides the tray selection codes that numerous people have sent you, PCL
supports a "media type" code, which is harder to find in the manuals. I
can locate it for you if you need it.

>From the viewpoint of the printer, it may be receiving (or defaulting):
   a) a bin code
   b) a paper size code
and
   c) a media type

When the printer has been configured to know what paper size and media
type are in each bin (as you show below), it has to decide which bin to
pull from.

Try telling your printer that bin 3 contains plain paper (just like bin
2). Does that make a difference? If so, then either leave it that way or
include a media type code in your output.

Finally, it may be possible to put in PJL instructions before your PCL.

The tray coding is not always straightforward 1, 2, 3. The manual might have
a clue if there is a difference.

Hi Bob

You are addressing the printer as a generic/text only printer?
If not the PCL escape codes will just get filtered out.

RE: [U2] XML Help

2008-05-14 Thread Eric Rosenzweig
Thanks for getting back to me.

We're on 10.2.4. The bigger challenge is that it requires that we set
up the dictionary for the items as being multivalued when some of the
data elements are not.

It just seems that it's going to be easier to just write a program than
use Universe's native utilities.

Thanks again.

Here are examples of generic PCL commands that I embed in my print jobs to
select paper source by bin:

003 PRINT CHAR(27):"&l4H":

laser.bottom.bin

That's only possibly valid if you don't use dynamic files or secondary indices.
Both of those will cause huge problems if you try to backup and copy at the OS
level.

- dynamic files may break as the load counters are held in shared memory.
- secondary indices hold absolute pathnames in the file header.

A classic error is to take a copy of a file to play around with not noticing
that it has a secondary index attached. Then any changes to that file will
affect the LIVE index.

RE: [U2] Backup Question

2008-05-14 Thread Hona, David S
uvbackup is the official database backup/restore utility.

Subject: [U2] Backup Question

Our company has a Universe System. We are trying to automate the backup
process without bringing the system down every night. Is there an Online
Backup Utility available? If so what is it and do any of you have a
sample script I could look at?
