Tray 3 selection not working Bob, 1.Is this the only PCL command that is not being recognized or are all others also not being recognized? If all PCL commands (eg. CPI, CPL, LPI, LPP, Orientation, etc.) are being ignored, check the Windows printer driver installed with this printer. If you are using the HP driver, none of your PCL commands will be passed thru to the printer - they will all fail. If so, you need to create an additional Windows logical printer attached to the same port as your current HP4250 and install the Generic Text-only driver from the Generic manufacturer's list of drivers in Windows and assign a different name to the printer (eg. HP4250TEXT). 2.If this is the only PCL command that is being ignored while others are being recognized, check the sequence of PCL commands in the string of PCL commands that are being sent to the printer. If you send a PCL command to specify a tray and then follow it with a PCL command to specify a particular paper type and that paper type is not in the same tray as the tray previously specified, the last command received by the printer will be the command that it uses - eg tray 3, paper type Plain will leave your printer at tray 2 according to your settings. Please contact me directly if this doesn't work. Rgds, Dave Dave

Seems like someone posted in the recent past that the latest versions of UV stopped using absolute pathnames for the indices, though, and now use relative path names. I assume that means you can now do an OS level copy without having to worry about your copied index pointing to the wrong file. As far as the dynamic file issue, we have quite a few dynamic files, and I've never had an issue with copying them while the database was idle. Could be we've just been lucky, but the development area is actively used for development and training on a daily basis, so that seems statistically improbable. Is it possible the load counters are periodically flushed to disk? -John --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

It has the advantage of performing internal data (structure) file integrity checking, as part of the backup and internally tagging the files as backed-up. You can use a third-party utility and invoke the TCL command "SUSPEND.FILES ON" to pause updates whilst you do an online backup. Or break your disk mirror, back that up instead. Other options to look at are UV Data Replication to backup system with UV installed/licensed to mirror your production environment. Not a cheap option in most cases. Whatever you use, you need to ensure that absolutely no updates are happening to any of the UniVerse files. RE: [U2] HP 4250dtn printer using PCL commands from Universe Basic program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working
Dave: I don't think I had to do this in UD when setting up a network printer. I simply installed the printer (HP2420tn) onto the UD machine; the HP driver was installed for this printer. I use the SETPTR command (creating a _HOLD_ entry first) to send PCL5 codes, the print job, and finally the PCL end-job codes and everything gets through just fine. Peter: In UD you'd use UniAdmin and configure the "DEFAULT" user to log into the path (account) desired; U2Server > Network Services > UDTelnet Server > Users tab. Then any authorized Windows user trying to access UniData, not already updated in this "Users" tab, would be logged into the defined account. Re: [U2] HP 4250dtn printer using PCL commands from Universe Basic program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working
Bob, 1.Is this the only PCL command that is not being recognized or are all others also not being recognized? Rgds, Dave Dave Taylor Sysmark Information Systems, Inc. RE: [U2] Backup Question
If we did a SUSPEND.FILES.ON, does it just suspend the updates and not mess with any jobs / users logged into the system? If so, that might work, since we have a third party script to backup to disk right now. Currently brings down the database though, doing that causes problems with other batch processes setup. Hardly anybody uses it though, it's too slow and not very flexible for some. And of course you're using a backup utility which can backup open files on the operating system you're hosting on. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chandrika Padaki Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 5:25 AM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: [U2] Backup Question Our company has a Universe System. Re: [U2] HP 4250dtn printer using PCL commands from Universe Basic program with hex conversion codes ... Tray 3 selection not working
Besides the tray selection codes that numerous people have sent you, PCL supports a "media type" code, which is harder to find in the manuals. I can locate it for you if you need it. >From the viewpoint of the printer, it may be receiving (or defaulting): a) a bin code b) a paper size code and c) a media type When the printer has been configured to know what paper size and media type are in each bin (as you show below), it has to decide which bin to pull from. Try telling your printer that bin 3 contains plain paper (just like bin 2). Does that make a difference? If so, then either leave it that way or include a media type code in your output. Finally, it may be possible to put in PJL instructions before your PCL. RE: [U2] Ruby on Rails
Tom de Grunt was doing some work in this area. His website is at http://www.degrunt.net . I think he ended up writing C libraries for the ActiveRecord support. I also seem to remember a thread a couple or five months back about enhancement requests for ROR and U2. Haven't seen anything about it since, though. -- daw -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Roosa, Mike Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 5:52 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: [U2] Ruby on Rails Is anyone out there using Ruby on Rails for accessing Universe or Unidata databases over the web? I know that you can call Windows DLL's or consume .NET web services using SOAP from Ruby and we could get it working either way, but I'd like to use the Rails ActiveRecord functionality to communicate with our database. RE: [U2] XML Help
You don't say what version of UniVerse you are on, but you may want to look at upgrading to the latest version. The number of associations available has been increased by quite a bit. I believe it is now 256 or something. You can find the information in the readme file, go to IBM's website for product availability. RE: [U2] Backup Question
John et al > I've also used the unix/linux OS-level cp command > to make a duplicate copy of our entire production database for > development use evey night for the past 12 years, and have yet to run > into a single issue with file integrity. That's only possibly valid if you don't use dynamic files or secondary indices. Both of those will cause huge problems if you try to backup and copy at the OS level. - dynamic files may break as the load counters are held in shared memory. - secondary indices hold absolute pathnames in the file header. A classic error is to take a copy of a file to play around with not noticing that it has a secondary index attached. Then any changes to that file will affect the LIVE index. RE: [U2] Backup Question
uvbackup is the official database backup/restore utility. Hardly anybody uses it though, it's too slow and not very flexible for some.
