[U2] [BlueFinity] Free Webinar: Empower MultiValue and Integrate with the World

2013-01-23 Thread David Peters Bluefinity
Free Webinar: Empower MultiValue and Integrate with the World

For .NET developers wishing to access MultiValue databases, mv.NET has built a
reputation for being the product of choice. Any MultiValue application can be
enhanced and new applications can be built using mv.NET without needing to move
away from tried, tested and trusted MultiValue database technology or existing
business logic.

mv.NET Solution Objects takes MultiValue application development to dazzling
new heights and, with one simple implementation, provides developers with
limitless ways to create amazing application interfaces using the very latest
industry standard RIA technology -- HTML5, Silverlight, ASP.NET, WPF and any
other .NET enabled Microsoft environments, servers and applications.

Native applications can be produced for iPhone/iPad/iPod or Android using a
common C# based development environment. Browser based applications can be
created using ASP.NET and HTML5 that adapt themselves to the appearance of
native platforms. mv.NET provides the route to fulfil both of these
requirements without learning multiple mobile platform skill sets. In fact,
.NET developers don't even need MultiValue knowledge to produce applications!
Organizations can utilize the massive resource pool of .NET developers to boost
application development bandwidth and reduce development timescales.

Let our experts show you how easy it can be to unleash your creativity and
create state-of-the-art, industry standard applications which can be deployed
across any of the wide range of today's interface devices - workstations,
browsers, handhelds, phones and other mobile devices. With mv.NET Solution
Objects, your MultiValue application can now rival the 'mainstream' competition
in terms of features, functions, performance, stability and efficiency!

[U2] U2 Web Designer - New Module Redback Object

2013-01-23 Thread Israel, John R.
I have never built a new module with web DE and I am having troubles.

I went to VOC APP.IDS and added TA (Time and Attendance). When I fire up U2
Web DE, TA now appears as a module. Cool.

Shooting in the dark, I build the following 3 DIR files:
  TACLASSES
  TADRIVERS
  TAOBJECTS
and set the permissions on those DIRs as needed. This was done because the
other two modules each have 3 similar DIR files.

How do I build a new object in Web DE? If I right-click on the TA module, then
New, then Redback Object, it gives me the following error:
  Server Error
  Status= -1, Error=Error in ReplyParser: null argument.

Am I missing something simple, or not even close?

[U2] Database time question

2013-01-23 Thread Robert Frailey

Running unidata on hpux11.11i
I have two databases in unidata that I would like to operate at different
time zones.
Lets say my Midvale database is set to mountain standard, USA which is also
the base unix kernal time.
I have an account called Austrailia, I would like it to run on australian
time.

Any ideas on making a unidata database independant of the unix kernal time.

[U2] Universal COMO

2013-01-23 Thread Wjhonson
By default, Universe will create several files in each account you create.
Like SAVEDLISTS, and ED... one of these default files is COMO which is
where you can stick session logs.

We use this constantly to monitor the output of phantoms, for review and
debugging the next day. The logs are emailed to myself and some other
programmers here.

By altering the VOC entries in the accounts, we could have a central, universal
COMO for all accounts, instead of one for each account.

I see a *pro* in this, for the ease of cleaning up old logs from years ago,
obviously no longer needed, which can be done from the O/S level. What might
be a *con* ?

Re: [U2] Universal COMO

2013-01-23 Thread Israel, John R.
Depending on the naming convention used, you might step on another COMO that
you wish to preserve. Add the account name to the COMO name to avoid this (or
something like that). Permissions could be an issue depending on your set up.

However, with a bit of thought, this could be very useful. One-stop shopping.

Re: [U2] Universal COMO

2013-01-23 Thread Dan Ell

Ahh. In that case, my guess is directories as temporaries with time-outs
means you have certain log directories in *nix that are cleaned up based on
date. This is typically done with a cronjob that uses find and simply removes
old logs at a preset time (usually in the wee hours of the morning).

Here is a find command to purge vsifax outbound faxes over 7 days old.

find /usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} \;

I believe that command added to the cron to run everyday at 1am would define
/usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax as temporary with time-outs.

1 0 * * * /usr/bin/find /usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} \;
#Clears vsifax report files and faxes older than 7 days

Re: [U2] Universe and ADO connections

2013-01-23 Thread Tony Gravagno
[AD]
Mike, in response to your question:

mv.NET has an ADO.NET-compliant provider called Adapter Objects. It
exposes the MV environment as tables, rows, columns, and stored
procedures for all CRUD, rather than files, items, attributes, and
BASIC programs, respectively. So the ADO.NET developer gets what
she/he needs without being a Pick expert. The queries to U2 are
pseudo-SQL, rather than being something like SQL-92 compliant. The
idea here is that the MV developer(s) collaborate with the .NET
developer(s) to craft queries with Where, and OrderBy clauses, where
we would normally use WITH and BY. For anything more complex the best
approach is to expose a BASIC subroutine as a stored proc, and accept
parameters.

mv.NET includes Adapter Objects to help keep non-Pick people happy,
but also included is Core Objects, which is more of a Pick-like
interface. This is a super-set of UO.NET. mv.NET uses UO.NET as a
basic lower-level transport and wraps round it a more powerful set of
functionality.

If you already abstract your UI from the middle-tier and the data
(Business Access Layer=BAL, Data Access Layer=DAL...) then replacing
existing code should not be a challenge.

mv.NET also includes Solution Objects, which generates strongly typed
classes - completely abstracting you away from database queries. This
will be familiar to those who know NHibernate, CSLA, the .NET Entity
Framework, and other ORM tools. You generate collection classes like
Customers which encapsulate instances of Customer, and those might
have methods like .Save or .UpdateSalesRep. So the mechanics of data
access are eliminated and the classes are usable by anyone independent
of their experience with RDBMS or Pick.

There are also built-in facilities for session pooling, Web Services,
Silverlight, and other common requirements.

Please feel free to contact me for more information, including
mentoring and other services to help with the conversion.

2013-01-23 Thread Mike Randall
Tony,

As we already have working models, the concern would be things like use of
connection (session) pooling licenses, the ability to return datasets
directly from Universe (we use SQLDirect) and overall performance.

We haven't totally split the tiers but are headed down that path so we'd be
close. I would be interested in discussing this further.

[AD]
Mike, in response to your question:

mv.NET has an ADO.NET-compliant provider called Adapter Objects. It exposes
the MV environment as tables, rows, columns, and stored procedures for all
CRUD, rather than files, items, attributes, and BASIC programs,
respectively. So the ADO.NET developer gets what she/he needs without being
a Pick expert. The queries to U2 are pseudo-SQL, rather than being something
like SQL-92 compliant. The idea here is that the MV developer(s) collaborate
with the .NET
developer(s) to craft queries with Where, and OrderBy clauses, where we
would normally use WITH and BY. For anything more complex the best approach
is to expose a BASIC subroutine as a stored proc, and accept parameters.

mv.NET includes Adapter Objects to help keep non-Pick people happy, but also
included is Core Objects, which is more of a Pick-like interface. This is a
super-set of UO.NET. mv.NET uses UO.NET as a basic lower-level transport and
wraps round it a more powerful set of functionality.

If you already abstract your UI from the middle-tier and the data (Business
Access Layer=BAL, Data Access Layer=DAL...) then replacing existing code
should not be a challenge.

mv.NET also includes Solution Objects, which generates strongly typed
classes - completely abstracting you away from database queries. This will
be familiar to those who know NHibernate, CSLA, the .NET Entity Framework,
and other ORM tools. You generate collection classes like Customers which
encapsulate instances of Customer, and those might have methods like .Save
or .UpdateSalesRep. So the mechanics of data access are eliminated and the
classes are usable by anyone independent of their experience with RDBMS or
Pick.

There are also built-in facilities for session pooling, Web Services,
Silverlight, and other common requirements.

Please feel free to contact me for more information, including mentoring and
other services to help with the conversion.

That's not however to what he is referring. Not a cron job, but rather a way
to specify directories to BE temporary.
Sort of a flag or something. I've never heard of that before.

Ahh. In that case, my guess is directories as temporaries with time-outs
means you have certain log directories in *nix that are cleaned up based on
date. This is typically done with a cronjob that uses find and simply removes
old logs at a preset time (usually in the wee hours of the morning).

Here is a find command to purge vsifax outbound faxes over 7 days old.

find /usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} \;

I believe that command added to the cron to run everyday at 1am would define
/usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax as temporary with time-outs.

1 0 * * * /usr/bin/find /usr/vsifax3/faxq/vsifax -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} \;
#Clears vsifax report files and faxes older than 7 days

this has several meanings:

Pronoun
Used to identify a specific person or thing close at hand or being indicated or

Adjective
Used to identify a specific person or thing close at hand or being indicated or

Adverb
To the degree or extent indicated: they can't handle a job this big.

This isn't a pro, in that that is perfectly possible, certainly in *nix.

I'm not sure how it's done, but it's pretty standard to declare certain
directories as temporaries with time-outs. Just add the COMO directories to
that list ... you could probably automate that.

What about symbolic links at OS level?

2013/1/23 Wjhonson wjhon...@aol.com

By default, Universe will create several files in each account you create.
Like SAVEDLISTS, and ED... one of these default files is COMO which
is where you can stick session logs.

We use this constantly to monitor the output of phantoms, for review and
debugging the next day. The logs are emailed to myself and some other
 programmers here.

By altering the VOC entries in the accounts, we could have a central,
universal COMO for all accounts, instead of one for each account.

I see a *pro* in this, for the ease of cleaning up old logs from years

Hi Will,

I think the biggest *con* you might come up against will be concurrency issues
with multiple processes writing to the one central location.
If you had a solution where each session log is unique amongst all processes
then that would work very well.

You will still need to clean it out though whether it be one big centralised
dir or one for each account. As others have indicated, and if you run a unix
box, then an overnight cron job to find and clean out any COMO dirs older
than a set number of days would an option for you. I would suggest that you
identify any logs that were important historically to you and roll them first.
Probably zipping them up and moving them to an archive area would be viable.
Google may even cough up a log rotate script that you could adapt.

Peter

Re: [U2] Universal COMO

2013-01-23 Thread Bill Haskett
In UniData (on Windows) this is pretty simple. First you create an
environment variable for the como file (e.g. MY_COMO) that points to the
directory under which you've created a _PH_ directory and a D__PH_
dictionary file. Then you create a VOC item as follows:

_PH_
001 DIR
002 @MY_COMO\_PH_
003 @MY_COMP\D__PH_

...to include in every account's VOC file. This will now act as a
centralized como repository. I do this with the _HOLD_ directory, as
everyone on our machines share the same spooler file, and each spooler
file name is a unique .txt file. I'm sure it would be even easier on
a nix machine. :-)

[U2] Help with REVISE (AKA ENTRO/ENTROC)

2013-01-23 Thread Clifton Oliver
Apparently somewhere through the years, my brain has dropped a few bits about
using REVISE.

In a multivalue association on screen 2 (or 3, 4, etc.), you can delete a row
by selecting the row, choosing the first field, and entering ##. No problem.

I *thought* to insert a row, you selected a row, chose the first field, and
entered a . But when I do that, I get Line 0 has not been defined.

Can someone please tell me what I've mis-remembered? How do you insert a
value (not add to the end, it has to be inserted between two exiting values) in
REVISE/ENTRO?

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Clif
