I believe our licences (as a VAR) with Rocket specify that when we sell UniData

Because that line of code wouldn't be part of your application and

In that case I would never buy any application software from you.

No wonder MV is struggling!

2011-07-08 Thread Colin Alfke
Probably not. I haven't looked at our contracts and I've only had a quick
scan of ours with Rocket so I'm not sure of the definition of application.
If you wrote a report or new interface maybe OK. If you wrote something to
keep track of your CD collection - likely not.

I'm not sure if it's just us or not (it sounded like Epicor has the same
terms with Rocket), but we don't get full licences from Rocket for UD/SB+
- they are for the embedded application. They are significantly cheaper than
the full licence - we've got some abnormally good terms from Rocket (at
least that's what they keep telling us). Of course, we may be able to
upgrade to full licenses - but we've never had a client that required
anything like that, and since we've sunsetted our MV application the point
is pretty much moot.

If you ever go work for a law firm - give me a shout. That's what we do
(just not with an MV based application).

My original point was simply that Epicor's claim may have been valid. It
sounds like you've got lots of valid grievances with them but this may not
be one.

Under the strict terms of U2 licensing, as defined by IBM
lawyers, most companies here would be violation of the EULA.
Such terms intentionally favor the vendors to allow them to act
if licensing is being abused, though I haven't heard of a single
instance where the more draconian terms were ever invoked.

MV is struggling for many reasons, per-seat licensing a primary
culprit, but I don't think anyone has ever not purchased a MV
license because they felt the licensing didn't support multiple
MV applications on a single system.

My employer doesn't mind to pay a rather moderate license fee for 160

But being charged tens of Thousands of Pounds for annual application

It isn't per-seat licensing but greedy software vendors that come up
with rip-off schemes like that which give MV a bad name.

Yes, this is a standard VAR tactic, since they are paying your license

Just deal directly with the software vendor.

Check your software contract - it may say licensed in perpetuity

than doing the multi-whammy : changing DBMS, application, vendors, and

employees. There are many fine ERP packages based on MV. The company

should check with Rocket Software, and since they're considering a
full migration anyway I believe they should also talk with Northgate,
InterSystems, and TigerLogic, who all have vendors with large-scale
packages. If they don't find what they need, sure, consider going
 elsewhere.

Yes, to answer the questions, FOSS ERP platforms have been getting
more robust and are worthy of investigation. I don't have stats right

now but not long ago something like 12 out of the top 20 SourceForge
projects were ERP - not the typical stuff we see there like torrent
 client/server, Linux tools, or games.
I've said for years that MV-based ERP vendors were going to lose their

shirts to those other offerings if they didn't learn to adapt and
 compete. Well, here we are.

Hint to MV application vendors: Open Source your software, sell
support and development services, and market that model to the
mainstream. That's what your modern competitors are doing. And
really, isn't that sort of what you've been doing for decades anyway,
just not advertising it? Then you just need to get the DBMS vendors
to open their eyes and recognize that the per-seat licensing model has

been dead for at least a decade...

Band-aids work well also, the cotton pad won't gum/scratch the camera

Epicor's Avante used to run on both UniData and UniVerse. I presume that
Avante is still the same. Avante-UniData was intended for Windows Servers.
Avante-UniVerse on Unix Servers.

I am not aware of any Epicor's product running on Progress.

I believe that Epicor had (or still has) other ERP software running on U2.

A few years ago, with Epicor's new president, George X... Epicor's newer
flagship product was released and runs on Microsoft SQL Server.

To purchase a Epicor U2 product you must first know it exists, then beg to
buy it. (Unless you're an existing customer, then they will gladly sell you
more copies)

Development continues - but not nearly at the pace for when the U2 products
were in active marketing driven development. Today all development is
driven by customer requested features. (Which is actually better than
marketing driven)

Yeah, I had the feeling some folks took the bait in that direction,
particularly once they gave that oh-so-enticing option of SQL Server. I'm
particularly amused by this line in the wikipedia page for Progress Progress
Software maintains in house consultants to develop and launch its products.
That sounds almost like the PeopleSoft model -- hire sales, outsource RD,
although they seem to insource them instead.

Sorry you have had to go this route due to what would seem to be a
reasonable company decision to continue with the ERP vendor and migrate to
their latest offering. I recall a time not too long ago when Epicor was from
the top UniData VAR and Datatel was the 2nd. They now both have SQL Server
offerings, although to date Datatel's still has UDT in the middle tier

Re: [U2] Epicor and Eclipse Was Re: PICK Systems Administratorposition

2011-04-06 Thread John Carter
I don't usually contribute much to this forum - but I appreciate the chance to
stay connected via the great posts here. In this case however, I do have some
specific experience relative to this thread that might be beneficial to some.

I've worked as a user, Epicor project manager/consultant, and independent ERP
consultant since 1985 on several Dataworks/Interactive/Platinum/Epicor products
including: DataFlo, Infoflo, and Avante (I've worked with Avante from the
original release to the current version), and now Epicor 9.

Relative to the Progress/SQL conversations: Epicor 9 can run on SQL or
Progress, but our benchmark testing indicated much slower performance on a very
beefy SQL machine. Processes, forms and reports were timed at 1/2 to 1/4 the
speed that they run on an average Progress server. Additionally, Epicor wasted
much of my customer's time claiming that the transition would be simple (it
wasn't), and that SQL would be faster, or equal to Progress (it definitely
wasn't). We gave up and stayed on Progress - but use SQL for our Replication
Server.

Regarding functionality - in my opinion Avante and DataFlo can still run
circles around Epicor 9 in many applications - the E9 design and functionality
is not as deep or well developed yet. However, it is getting most of Epicor's
development resources and attention these days and is getting better quickly. I
wouldn't advise most of my customers to make the leap yet (but maybe in a
couple of years) from Avante/DataFlo to E9, but it was a natural evolution for
my customer that was previously using Vista 8.

In my opinion, the central benefit to E9 over Avante though is the ability to
modify the functionality of the software without modifying the source code.
They do this via Business Process Methods (BPM's) and Personalizations. Screen
layout and fields are also very easy to modify. Extracting and presenting data
is very straightforward and interfaces to MS products pretty seamlessly, in
most cases users can perform extracts to Excel out of the box - no IT interface
required. Sophisticated reports can be quickly and easily developed using E9's
Business Activity Queries (BAQ's) and Dashboards. Both of which can be learned
and used by anyone that could in the past use MS Access or some of Excel's
advanced functions. This limits IT involvement to only very complex report
solutions (which can also be done using BAQ's and Dashboards, but may take a
little more time to develop).

The most obvious advantage comparing Epicor 9 to Avante for the customers that
I have worked with is that making changes to process functionality using
Business Process Methods (BPM's) does not inhibit the company from taking EVERY
patch or upgrade that is offered. NO KNITTING. The BPM's, BAQ's and Dashboards
(custom reports) are easily moved from the previously installed version to the
next. So, every time a new release comes out, IT does a quick 1-2 set-up and
test, training is developed and implemented for new product functionality
associated with the new release (usually less than one week), critical users
exercise and test the new version in the Pilot account, then the upgrade/patch
is rolled out. We can take advantage of new functionality and bug fixes almost
immediately (usually within 2-5 business days of roll-out) without worrying
about which modifications might be stepped on or deleted.

Sometimes the Epicor 9 experience can be very frustrating, but we believe that
Epicor is going in the right direction and within a couple of years E9 will
probably match Avante and DataFlo in functionality.

In spite of some of the pain associated with being part of the rollout of a
new(ish) product, the IT departments at my customers are GLAD that they are on
Epicor 9.

Overly sensitive much? It was a joke.

Mecki, This is exactly the reason this :) was invented for use in

bunched panties syndrome lately. Chill people.

Oh and Eclipse (Avanti, Intuit, this weeks owner) definitely runs on

Relative to the Progress/SQL conversations: Epicor 9 can run on SQL or
Progress, but our benchmark testing indicated much slower performance on a very
beefy SQL machine. Processes, forms and reports were timed at 1/2 to 1/4 the
speed that they run on an average Progress server. Additionally, Epicor wasted
much of my customer's time claiming that the transition would be simple (it
wasn't), and that SQL would be faster, or equal to Progress (it definitely
wasn't). We gave up and stayed on Progress - but use SQL for our Replication
Server.

Regarding functionality - in my opinion Avante and DataFlo can still run circles around Epicor 9 in many applications - the E9 design and functionality is not as deep or well developed yet. However, it is getting most of Epicor's development resources and attention these days and is getting better quickly. I wouldn't advise most of my customers to make the leap yet (but maybe in a couple of years) from Avante/DataFlo to E9, but it was a natural evolution for my customer that was previously using Vista 8.

The most obvious advantage comparing Epicor 9 to Avante for the customers that I have worked with is that making changes to process functionality using Business Process Methods (BPM's) does not inhibit the company from taking EVERY patch or upgrade that is offered. NO KNITTING. The BPM's, BAQ's and Dashboards (custom reports) are easily moved from the previously installed version to the next. Spoiling Epicor's easy profit making scheme that is.
Before I started my current job the company I work for was spending tens
if not hundreds of thousands of Pounds on Epicor consulting and project
management services every year.
Now Epicor don't get a penny and even lost the revenue from UD support!

They were stupid enough to tell management they would stop development
of Avante after release 9.5 trying to sell them on Vantage.
The result being that the company is now switching to an Oracle based
ERP system from another vendor because Vantage didn't cut to the chase
then and as you admitted yourself neither does E9.
The main division is still running on Avante 9.2, though!
Who needs Epicor RD or consultants costing £1000 a day if one decent in
house MV developer can modify a SB+ based package quickly and at low
cost to whatever the company needs?
BTW I use IBM Cognos for dashboards, KPIs and reporting these days. Not
just with data from Avante but also from Oracle and SQL Server.
Exporting data to Excel is child's play with SB+ too and even the guys
on the shop floor are doing it without the help from IT.

And the best thing is it's not relational but U2!
