You can get your U2 support directly through Rocket.
And then you can get your software support from anyone you choose.
You can then tell the vendor to take a flying leap :) Or more colorful
language.

As a vendor, I have kept out of this, having a vested interest.

Nearly 30 years ago, we did an intellectual property swap with the then
owners of MANFACT, and have continued developing and supplying our product
since. We call it Beacon for Business.

We believe the income we enjoy from our customers comes with responsibility
for supplying:

-warranty (fixing any bugs)

-answering questions

-supply of continued enhancements

Enhancements include about 1,000 changes per year including:

-VB .Net user interface
-parameter-driven data entry, reports, forms and queries

-upgrades driven from user wish-lists, eg barcodes

-latest is integration with online shop floor machine monitoring
and management

If Epicor have taken over MANFACT, without taking on the responsibilities,
there is no advantage to be gained by staying with them. Such a pity!

Whilst another partner could provide a support service they can't provide
Rocket maintenance for licenses sold by someone else.

However there is a process you can go through with Rocket to keep your

Furthermore we have been so long on our current release most of the baseline

Our internal business processes are heavily proceduralized (word?), so there is

I can understand your concern and also the reasoning of your boss.
Since you are dealing with Epicor cancelling the maintenance for ManFact
will most likely mean that they will cancel your U2 support too.

The company I work for went through the same drama.
'You cancel the support contract for Avante and you can't have support
for UniData anymore', is what Epicor said.
Since Avante had been heavily modified (mainly by Epicor themselves)
every call was charged unless we could prove that it was a genuine bug.
By the time I found the bug and could prove that this was in the
original code too I could as easily just fix it myself.
What good is paying for support only to get charged nearly every time
you have a problem?

So management decided to cancel the contract.

But they went to another VAR to have at least Unidata and SB+ under
support and a resource of experienced programmers that can help out if
the IT department can't solve a problem with Avante.
Management is happy because they save a substantial amount of money and
I don't care because I didn't get any help from Epicor anyway and the
guys working for our new VAR are much better.
So if you ask me - go for it - find another Rocket VAR so your database
is still supported and give Epicor the boot.

We had ManFact for over 15 years (I was not here for all that time)
and there came a point in our corporate life where this very question arose. We
sat down and did an analysis of how many times did we call against the cost.
We considered that (essentially) there were only two good support people for
ManFact plus the fact that Epicor was stopping all development, we decided for
us that it would be cheaper over a year to go it alone. We have found that the
times we may have called Epicor in the past, we were able to slug through the
matter and resolve the issue ourselves. We said sayonara to them and for us it
was the best decision.

Well, we now have 'real' U2 and SB+ licenses.
I don't know how it was done, but I guess 'by the book' Rocket can also

None of Epicors beeswax, really!
Better than loosing a paying customer at least in my book. ;-)

That is the difference between Rocket and corporations like Microsoft,
IBM, Oracle, Epicor and so on.

Rocket U2 seem to care for their customers

just note, by the book, your u2 licenses which are sold as embedded product

that's not to say you can't outright go buy new u2 licenses - but again,
(depending on Epicor's VAR agreement with Rocket, IBM, et all) you may not
have transferable u2 licenses.

I can understand your concern and also the reasoning of your boss.
Since you are dealing with Epicor cancelling the maintenance for ManFact
will most likely mean that they will cancel your U2 support too.

The company I work for went through the same drama.
'You cancel the support contract for Avante and you can't have support for
UniData anymore', is what Epicor said.
Since Avante had been heavily modified (mainly by Epicor themselves) every
call was charged unless we could prove that it was a genuine bug. By the
time I found the bug and could prove that this was in the original code too
I could as easily just fix it myself.
What good is paying for support only to get charged nearly every time you
have a problem?
So management decided to cancel the contract.

But they went to another VAR to have at least Unidata and SB+ under
support and a resource of experienced programmers that can help out if the
IT department can't solve a problem with Avante.
Management is happy because they save a substantial amount of money and I
don't care because I didn't get any help from Epicor anyway and the guys
working for our new VAR are much better.
So if you ask me - go for it - find another Rocket VAR so your database is
still supported and give Epicor the boot.

Re: [U2] Reasons to continue with Software vendor support

2012-06-29 Thread Holt, Jake
We dropped support because epicor was forcing us to pay both the DB
support and their own software maintenance support, we couldn't just
maintain the DB support, we would have kept UniVerse support if they
would have let us.

We here have yearly UniVerse support with Rocket. The cost is modest.
We are using HP-Ux. The Rocket support gets us the database upgrades
and once or twice we have had database upgrade issues that Rocket
handled rather well.

If we were to drop support... last time that I checked... it was twice
the price to get back on. For us here, our Rocket support is something
of an insurance policy.

If Epicor is dropping ManFact support... it sounds like Epicor would be
merely marking-up Rocket's U2 services.

They can't force you to *not* have support with anyone.
So you are free to get your Universe support through any other provider.
