[Ubnt_users] Ubiquiti commitment to WISPs

2018-08-13 Thread Steve Barnes
This is again another time that UBNT eyes have moved off the WISP target and
moved to the Retail space. The reason for 2 in a box is simple if you’re
selling to retail small businesses. You would sell these as a link for 2
buildings. Therefor you need a 2 pack. If you were selling them on Amazon or
B a 2 pack is perfect.

I know that the 5 packs are coming back eventually.

Ben Moore and James Craig. This is my request to Ubiquity to make a BOLD
statement in some way that shows your commitment to the WISP community and your
appreciation to those of us that have stuck by your side through years of "soon
GPS", Elevate, 2-pack CPEs, poor supply chain planning and many other goofy
decisions you have made over the years that have made us defend out position to
stay with UBNT as our Primary Vendor. It is time for a little appreciation.

Troy,

Regarding personnel change at the top highly unlikely. Robert Pera still owns
about 70% of the stock and if you look at the 600 Million in stock repurchases
the company recently did so he could sell back some of his shares to Treasury
stock without diluting his ownership control to get the cash he needs to buy up
the minority shares of Grizzlies BB team, Robert is still clearly in control.

Previous quarter: We'll see at least $20 million in this sector by next quarter!

This quarter: Uh, actually we didn't see any of that money, but it was our
competitor's fault so we sued them.

[Ubnt_users] CDP

2018-03-19 Thread Steve Barnes
I just realized today that CDP is tuned off by default on all UBNT AC devices.
That means that MikroTik Neighbor List does not show up a single AC device.
Other than the loss of this functionality what other purpose does the CDP do in
the network. I know it can be rather chatty as well. Pside and Down side to
turning it on?

[Ubnt_users] MTU

2018-02-19 Thread Steve Barnes
I am trying to get every last drop out of our internet. Most towers have a
MikroTik Routing, Netonix doing POE and Switching, Fed by AF5x, and Rockets or
Prism for AP's. Sometimes seeing some slow downs I cant account for.
Wondering if MTU or Flow control needs adjusted.

The MTU settings are as follows:
MikroTik MTU: 1500 L2 MTU: 1598 Flow Disabled
Netonix MTU: 1528 Both
AF5x Up to 9600 Auto Flow Disabled
Rocket MTU: 1500 Flow Disabled
Prism MTU: 1500 Flow Disabled

In your experience should any of these be adjusted?

Re: [Ubnt_users] 8.5.0 problem

2018-01-26 Thread Steve Barnes
We also found that upgrading clients to 6.14 on 2GHz band killed channel 2464
in 10 MHz width. We have had sectors on that channel for years and the other
day we upgraded a bunch of sector clients to 6.14 and on 2 different sectors
the clients did not come back online. After messing with it. We finally
changed channel and they come back. Finally had to set those sector to 2462
MHz since 2464 would not work.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Rocket M2 ethernet link problem.

Was the new radio setup in the office or was it an on-site setup? Could be bad
radio. Water in the line, cable not plugged in well at top. No matter what I
would expect a climb. Setup a new one in office and make sure it is good.
Climb swap it first see what you get. Re-terminate. And rerun if nothing else.

Jay, It sounds like you've done everything except test the cable end to end

the switch and nothing. For trouble shooting they tried the following

- swapping the switch with another 10/100/1000 unit.
- swapping patch cords
- replacing the power supply.
- forcing the radio to 10 megabit full.
- resetting and reprogramming the radio.
- re-terminating the lower end of the cable run.
Is this a cable issue? It's a 2 month old Shireen Cat 6 run so I hate to
think it's bad already. The weather isn't going to make another tower

Re: [Ubnt_users] Any updates on Speed test fix in AC2

2017-09-14 Thread Steve Barnes
I gave up. I installed a Titanium at my edge with the wireless turned off, a
ping watchdog set to reboot it every 6 hours and set a very generic IP. All my
staff do speed tests to it from stations instead of using AC. Gives them a
better feeling of what the customer can see speed wise to our edge.

If you run a scan on the entire /8 subnet that you are using it should find
them all. Assuming that you are only using one /8, of not then scan all of
them. It isn't speedy.

downgrading and upgrading firmware. Really hope they get the discovery working

I'm on AC2.1 beta 7 and it won't find any 6.0.4 radios, XW or XM. I had some
being monitored on beta 6, so those are still monitored, but show in devices
not found column of discovery. TCP scan only showed prism radios too.

I downgraded to 5.6.15 and it was discovered. I had to downgrade AP and CPE
for it to discover the devices on AC. Now to search for the missing radios!!

Subject: [Ubnt_users] aircontrol won't find 6.0.4 devices

Been reading all about it in the ubnt forums - but anyone have any suggestions
around this?

Thought I'd post it here too -

Haven't run aircontrol since about 18 months ago. About nine months ago I
attempted to upgrade to the then current beta but it basically corrupted my
database and would not even start the server service. Last night late I
started over again from scratch. Ran into the 6.0.4 problem as one of my
network segments (from a recent purchase) we have manually changed the ip
addresses and put them all on 6.0.4

A different segment is still running 5.6.3. I was planning to move them all to
6.0.4 and also make a mass change of the username / password.

Left discovering overnight, found all the devices on 5.6.3 on that particular
network segment but did not find any 6.0.4

Today once googling and discovering this issue I downgraded an AP from 6.0.4 to
5.6.3 and discovery found it immediately.

I don't want to do this to 300 devices.

Aircontrol v.2.0.2.2874.170719.18353 is running on a public IP within our
network.

I tried to new feature tcp scan but no luck (probably because the server is in
public ip space).

I thought about temporarily changing the IP but then radios would be reporting
to the wrong IP.

I can manually add the device but have not found a way to do that in bulk.

I don't know if it is easier for me to upgrade to something higher than 6.0.4
on all of my devices and use discovery or to manually add 300+ devices. I am
hoping for another option.

Time to ask the experts as I cannot figure out this issue!! This CPE worked
perfect until a recent storm, but I have replaced the AP and CPE radios at this
point too.

I have one customer that reports erratic download and uploads. Actually
sometimes going above the set rate in my Tik router, CCR1009-7G-1C+PC, Firmware
Bugfix 6.38.7. This CPE is connected to an AP that is feed from routers that
are directly connected to my fiber line in my Data Center in this area, so
everything is at the base of the tower that feeds this AP directly, no jumps to
other towers first.

I spent a lot of time connected to this CPE at the customers house testing with
and without airmax, changing radio firmware, decreasing and increasing power,
but get the same erratic behavior. I changed the POE,
M5 cone tested the cable (tested good), but still the same. I finally tested
multiple channels at the AP and found a stable solution/temp fix, not perfect,
but stable. I had to leave the CPE unlimited as it was still not behaving
correctly so for the trouble I left it unlimited to buy time to figure this
out. I even stopped at some other customers on that same road and AP and those
tested like it should at the rate it was set to in the Tik router.

Customer has been great during this time and sending me samples of speedtests
at different times in the day. Still getting big swings in speeds that vary
and when I check AirControl it does not even match the speeds they are
reporting. I'm using AC 2.1 beta 7. I realize the unlimited setup could
impact their tests, but why is AC2 not showing anything even close to their
speedtests?

Below are the radio stats for this CPE. I attached a word file of the M5 radio
stats as the copied image would not paste correctly on this email.

Signal: -56dBm
H/V: -59/-58 dBm

Transmit CCQ: 93%
TX/RX: 72.222mbps/72.222mbps
Firmware 5.6.15 XW

Airmax is enabled and shows 96% for both.

Channel Width: 10mhz
Channel Freq: 5805
Distance is 1.7 miles
TX power 26

Access Point is on 5.6.15 XW firmware

I love the USG for what it offers as far as visibility on user traffic.

However, we have bought 2 and both could not keep their config for more than a
few days after we put it up.

We constantly were driving almost an hour out to reset it and it was driving us
and our customers crazy.

Anyone found a comparable product that is more stable/reliable?

I suppose it wouldn't have to be ubiquiti.

I would if this was a technical question, but it's not. The beta forum is also
an open forum for those that have access to the beta, which can be anyone. This
is more of a one one question for their management team. Does anyone have a
contact for them? I know a lot of the guys over there, but I'm not sure who is
in charge of edgeMax.

Perhaps Ben or Matt can direct me to the right person?

I have to reverse what I said. We have been having this issue and my climber
found that and have been using zip ties on every AF5x, Rocket and Prism since
last October. Guess that’s what happens when the boss stays on the ground. He
doesn’t know the little things our guys do to make the job be a 1 time climb.

I went up the tower myself and simply wiggled the cable with the slightest of
effort. That's a factual problem. Ubnt admitted there's an issue. You're
just very lucky, hopefully it stays that way or you zip tie like hell.

We do not have this happening on hundreds of wireless static IP customers. This

We will be putting up a new tower to split the current customer base.
My thinking right now is two 90 degree sectors. The other 180 degrees is
hillside so no need to radiate in that direction

The clients are all Nanobridge/Powerbeams non-AC radios but we want to add AC
into the mix. The environment is 5Ghz with lots of other radios out there.

Looking at the bewildering array of Rocket radios, I am looking for some
recommendations on what equipment to use.

Hi Steve,

As you probably know the only way to avoid the certificate warnings is to
install a valid SSL certificate, but there's no easy way to do so on all
devices. If you were referring to the controllers themselves (UniFi, AC2,
etc); that's relatively simple.

Chrome used to offer the option to ignore/bypass warnings, but that option has
since been removed due to the obvious security implications involved.

They may monitor the list but Multiple SSID is not something they even hear the
need for when you talk to them in person. I personally have asked the staff
for this feature on and off for 6 years. Even watch Matt Hardy write it down
with an explanation as to how it could be helpful. He either lost the paper or
he threw it away when he left UBNT.

Not in my book. We use frequency scan list to prevent any undesired connection
to the wrong AP.
Now dual SSID would be of great advantage.
The one thing I miss that the ole Alvarion equipment had.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Random users keep dropping off with 6.0

2017-01-16 Thread Steve Barnes
We had this exact same issue on 1 tower. But we have upgraded 5 identical
towers. Only difference we could find was that the one tower that failed did
not have WPA turned on. (It’s a shared tower with another company and did not
want to show them our Pass key for the rest of our network). As soon as we took
our APs back to 5.6.9 the problems vanished.

I am thinking it is a difference between the security. All the rest of our
towers are secured. And we had a mix of XM and XW APs and stations. We did
see that it was primarily the XM stations that went away. XW stations seemed
to stay working when other went off-line.

We are seeing the same thing but includes 2.4 nano and some AG2's (not all and
not xm or xw specific)

also the 2.4 clients will work for awhile then stop passing traffic until truck
roll reboot

Also RM9 upgraded to 6.0 one client works fine second client will not pass
traffic no

matter the firmware. This did NOT change when RM9 down graded back to 5.5.10
not 5.6.9

Also use care in upgrading 5Ghz and AC see strange issues as well down grading
everything

back to 5.6.9 and some to 5.5.10 to get things working again

6.0 got bloody

Wierd!

light, and unit takes minutes to be able to get a login and then is 10 Mbps on
the LAN connection and is not stable. Tried other computers and POE same
issue. Have upgraded lots of M5 devices with this same system and no issues.

I did. -87 or so at the worst.

I get 1 ms pings from the radios to Ethernet devices on their respective sides.
The low throughput and high latency only seems to affect traffic going over the
wireless link.

The near side of the link is fairly new. The other side is probably five years
old.

Unknown on the voltage. No other reported issues in that area. PCs, VoIP
phones, etc. working as expected. Well, other than network issues.

I think they start work at 7:30, so I would guess that it was fine for at least
some time until then. Didn't get What's Up notifications of issues until nearly
10, so it wasn't dog shit terrible until then.

I know you said noise was unlikely. Can you run an AirView anyway to
make sure? I suspect your air rates would be in the toilet if there was
anything making enough noise to slow your throughput this much. Unless
maybe, WAG, it's really narrow band FHSS?

You didn't mention it, but I assume you've checked that the ethernet
negotiation is correct at both ends?

Any possibility voltage is down into brownout range?

It was like someone flipped a switch and throughput went to heck at
8:00? Or customer came in at 8 and throughput was bad, problem may have
come about between 5pm yesterday and this morning?

How old is the gear?

How are you running the bandwidth tests? Have you tried iperf between radios
to single out the rf? Is there any variation in speed when changing the
channels? i've seen this with a ub when there is an mtu crunch, otherwise i
would jjst blame the units.

Going to use Unifi to provide Wi-Fi.
Question: How much bandwidth do you lose per AP if you use the Wireless link
ability of the AUP-Outdoor+ Aps (2.4 Only).

I will have 1GB fiber to the location. 3 Buildings and a large outside area to
cover so I have 4 outdoor Aps. Should I setup a 5.8 Omni 40Mhz wide with a
Nanobeam 19 at each AP and building to feed each APs or will the wireless link
of the Unifi suffice? Going to give 5MB per connection and don’t want to kill

 on these early next year.

The NanoBeams do not have DFS yet...but they will.

Yeah, performance with AC is priority # 1. You can see current
performance with PTMP from Chuck's post. Another should be posted
 shortly.

There are some really cool enhancements/features with 7.1/AC.

Part of it for me is the perception of UBNT as a company. We aren't like Apple
consumers. For the most part, most of us are not buying these products to jack
with them at Starbucks and drink Coffee. We are out on towers, in all kinds of
weather, deploying these. No matter the driving factor, the majority of these
networks are here to make money. I, for one, have bet my house and my future
on UBNT products in the past. It was no different than betting on another
vendor, but I chose UBNT for several reasons. Price was a factor but not the
only one.

Robert and Staff, please don't misunderstand the passion for these folks being
fanboys. Sure, the inner geek in everyone wants the shiny new gadget. But at
the end of the day we all want to go home and be able to set our thermostat at
71 instead of 50. :-) This is about providing a service and being in business.
Tools like AirControl means we can do that extra install instead of having the
programmer spend their time figuring out how to pull data from the radio or
dump into some 3rd party app. We all know monitoring and proactive solutions
are essential in this business. I want to know if my business customers are
getting what they pay for. If I have SLA customers I want to prove to them we
are living up to expectations. Having that data might mean keeping them or
not. A complete product family means we have a lower TCO.

Now, back to perception. If I am putting my house on the line would I continue
to do so for a company that hasn't finished a key product like AC in how many
years? Version 1 never was completed. V2 is now dead. What about the Mfi
cloud? I want to be able to trust a company with my livelihood. Sure, a
software product isn't the same as a working AP, but it should be a key
component. In today's ISP world information is King. If I have information I
know when to upgrade, what customers to proactively fix, and how the overall
health of the network is. This is what makes me different than Comcast. I
should be able to know everything about what I have.

If you want to make it cloud based, how about an appliance we can install
locally? Just an idea, in a sea of thousands. But more importantly, help us
focus on automating our businesses and being kick butt at it. Give us the tools
we actually need. That way we can buy more units from you. Simple.

Justin

Kees,

I do not think Robert Pera follows this list, but he did respond to AirCRM
concerns on the Ubiquiti forum:

Hi Guys --

Thanks for all the feedback. Here are some quick thoughts from our side:

1. The goal behind our CRM solution is to level the playing field between Tier
1 operators and you guys. We have invested significant RD resources over the
past couple years towards providing powerful business software technology which
would allow your businesses and networks to scale faster and more efficiently.
Our goal has always been to accelerate the growth of our entire Industry and
make you guys more successful.

2. We have some powerful features planned that take advantage of the
centralized hosting and that is why we decided on a cloud framework

3. A significant piece of Ubiquiti's DNA is about listening to our community.
We hear the message about the local hosting requirement loud and clear. We
have started on it now and will have solution for local hosting

Consider what we have available now as an option to try out. For those of you
that will hold off until the local hosting option is available, please feel
free to try out the UI and direction and let us know what you think.

Thanks,

Robert

 Matt @ UBNT

I do believe it is time for you to go to the upper management and have
them make a comment. The issues that have been so elequently stated
in this and other posts in this last week need to be addressed. The
silence from UBNT is deafening and shakes my confidence in UBNT.

 Please keep us informed.

Guys, you have good points. I believe though, the problem here isn't
just the product, it's the message. The reality is that it wouldn't
take that many more resources to finish and update AC2. I thought
it had a bunch of bells and whistles I could have lived without and
that functionality was more important but that wasn't my call. We
fudged through its inadequacies with the hope that upgrades were coming.
Unfortunately, the Cone of Silence from Ubiquiti on this issue after
more than a year caused me anghst. I can see where this product
works for newcomers to the industry as a billing and CRM product.
But I do agree that those operators that have more than a few
hundred users are going to have serious qualms about opening up
their network to an outside attack or even the possibility that
there is some aspect of security that is out of their control. We
pay a lot of money every year for security products to protect our
customers and although we are going to test and probably startup
WISPs to this product, I don't see it as a large operational
management tool specifically because of the unknown control issue.
If Russia can hack our SCADA system, probably the North Koreans can
hack Sony, the Chinese pretty much anything they want to including
our most secured military and technical secrets, I'm a little nervous
letting some outside entity control my network.

Here is my question, if the cloud gets hacked and someone takes down
my network causing me great financial harm (kind of like Green
toughcable), who am I suing? I know the same argument can be made
for AirControl now but that device should be behind a firewall with
security at the operating system level managed by the WISP. The exposure
  is far lower.

Re: [Ubnt_users] New airControl

2014-12-02 Thread Steve Barnes
I want to first go on record as saying I to dislike the idea of a cloud based
management tool.

However, I also remember all of us bitching about AC being a Java app and not
having a web UI for our phones and other devices. When Ben Moore said that we
would not have to worry about that in the next version I kind of thought about
a hosted solution, but thought “Oh surly not”.

Another point that I want to make is that US WISPs are not their largest
market. I am sure that it is a large market for them but not the largest. I
expect they are trying to be uniform across all their platforms worldwide. I
assume we will see Unifi and Mfi eventually go ALL Cloud based. Everything from
AP, CPE, Router, WiFi, Lights, Phones, Cameras, and even thermostat controlled
from the cloud.

The hacking possibility of all this is huge. But everything I see is moving
this way. The local school Corp in our area just released 2 techs and
converted ever thing they could to virtual off-site with remote monitoring and
control of all equipment from WiFi Aps and Net Switches to Servers and
workstations. The IT Manager says he loves the reduced work load but sees now
he has handed the keys to someone else and has a lot less control. All he does
now is move wires and swap equipment.

All the NEST products, personal IP Security Cameras all are already in the
cloud. The general techy populous are starting to except it. I think lots of
WISPs will be less likely since they feel less in control of their networks and
we are all about control. But I don’t think we are going to stop this trend.

Subject: [Ubnt_users] Scrap the Unifi Phones - I want a signal readout on my
watch

Has anyone tried to get into this project? I'd love to have an Android watch
connected to my phone which would go to the backhaul or CPE for a signal
readout to display on the watch. Hopefully someone can make this as easy as
buying a watch! =)
