[Bug 552057] [NEW] grub2 makes killing windows partition easy

2010-03-30 Thread Jürgen

Beeing noisy J have upgraded from Karmic to Lynx Beta
Everything went well until grub2 asked me where to put grub. I think I should
have checked sda but I also checked sda2 and sda5 and sda.

When I hit ok I could see some messages on the screen saying basically
what you are doing is stupid but the program continued anyway leaving
me with a perfect lynx but also with a nowaytobootevenwithrecoverydisk-
windows.

What I suggest is that the option is greyed out on windows partitions.
For specialists like me :-) there could be an expert menu (marked with
a skull) .

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 485562] Re: Data loss on ext3, maybe related to data=journal

2010-03-22 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
dmesg2.txt is obviously with a different kernel (the bug report was filed 4
months ago).
I can't tell whether the problem still occurs with this kernel, the machine is
in production and I won't experiment on it.

[Bug 442498] Re: openldap install bare bones need default DIT separate package

2010-03-19 Thread Jürgen Erhard
And it also won't be fixed in any meaningful way in Lucid, or do I read
that Declined for Lucid wrong?

Really, I'm appalled. Last time I saw such a broken-as-installed
package was in an ancient SuSE install. When you removed the DIT code
from the package, why TF did you not roll a *simple* slapd-dit package
(or whatever one would have called it)?

It has been a long time really. and I have deleted my .kde directory since.
This directory included a lot of remainings from previos versions going back

After deleting I had to restore my mail settings and after that I had a clean

With that the bug vanished and I think I'm no longer able to reproduce the
error.

Thanks for your help

resolvconf actually should already use /lib/init/rw/resolvconf with
/etc/resolvconf/run being a symlink to it. (At least for new
installations, for upgraded systems I had to fix this manually).

ULOG has been declared obsolete in the kernel and it actually has been
removed from the IPv6 netfilter code already. The replacement is NFLOG.

[Bug 483897] Re: Wrong STACK check with custom colors

2009-11-23 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Here's a simple test plug-in. It just builds a stack from 3 constant
values. With the attached version, you'll get errors in /var/log/munin
/munin-graph.log:

[...] ERROR: First field (f2) of graph [...] b483897 is STACK. STACK can
only be drawn after a LINEx or AREA.
[...] ERROR: First field (f3) of graph [...] b483897 is STACK. STACK can
only be drawn after a LINEx or AREA.

If you remove the 3 colour lines from the script (i.e., if you let munin choose
the colors itself) the errors go away.
As said in the original report, the logic behind the STACK–LINEx/AREA test is
broken if fields have custom colors.

[Bug 486127] [NEW] Not preempt-safe

2009-11-20 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

  User-space parser utility for AppArmor
ii linux-source 2.6.31.15.28

Apparmor in 2.6.31.15.28 (and earlier karmic kernels) apparently is not
safe for use with CONFIG_PREEMPT. Kernels with CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY
seem to be OK.

With CONFIG_PREEMPT I get scheduling while atomic. Sometimes with a
non-fatal oops, sometime with a hard crash.
Happens both on i386 and x86-64, both with unicore and multicore machines.

[Bug 485562] [NEW] Data loss on ext3, maybe related to data=journal

2009-11-19 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

I'm currently testing a backup scheme on a new karmic installation. The
procedure worked flawlessly on jaunty and older Ubuntu/Debian
distributions (albeit using hardware RAID on those, the new machine uses
a software RAID). With karmic however I'm experiencing data loss (at
least on the designated backup partition).

The partition in question gets mounted once per hour. The respective
entry in /etc/fstab is

UUID=7420cd8f-dd47-4fdb-b64e-4fd02f945e43 /srv/backup
ext3
noatime,nodiratime,user_xattr,acl,noauto,nodev,nosuid,data=journal
0 2

The partition is an LVM2 logical volume which runs on a single PV on a
RAID 1 composed of 2 disks (driver is AHCI).

I noticed the data loss because I use sitecopy to push the backups to
another machine after each backup run. On about 1 out of 3 backup runs
sitecopy complains about a corrupted state file. I didn't check the
backups for the integrity yet as I can reproduce the problem with
sitecopy alone easily.

To reproduce it I do:

# cd /srv/backup/backup2l/scripts/
# cp data.1001.all.tar.gpg # change something so sitecopy has something to
push
# sitecopy -r /srv/backup/backup2l/scripts/.sitecopyrc -p
/srv/backup/backup2l/scripts/.sitecopy -q -u backup
# cd /
# umount /srv/backup
# mount /srv/backup
# less /srv/backup/backup2l/scripts/.sitecopy/backup

In about one out of three runs, the last step step shows a corrupted
file: Old contents + rest filled with zeros or a truncated file.

dmesg and syslog show nothing. In particular no journal-replay related
message. Adding a fsck.ext3 -f /dev/vg0/srv_backup before mounting
shows no problem either, still the file gets corrupted every now and
then.

So far I've discovered two ways to work around the problem:
* Don't use data=journal.  Both data=writeback and data=ordered seem to work
fine
* Do less /srv/backup/backup2l/scripts/.sitecopy/backup before the unmount

Especially the latter seems to suggest a strange flush problem with the
data=journal code in karmic's current x86-64 kernel (2.6.31.15.28).

[Bug 444563] Re: rename(/dev//.udev-tmp, /dev//) failed: Invalid cross-device link

2009-11-17 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
(Coming from bug 483890)

I only see this happening when creating/removing snapshots for backup
not while booting. In addition to rename(/dev//.udev-tmp, /dev//)
failed... I also get rmdir(/dev/) failed: Device or resource busy and
some error messages when creating the snapshots:

Path /dev/DM_MAJOR=_253_ no longer valid for device(253,18)

I can get rid of those by pausing a few seconds between creating the individual
snapshots. This just leaves the rename/rmdir entries in syslog then.
The snapshots seems to work fine but I'm not 100% sure if I really should trust
the system.

[Bug 483897] [NEW] Wrong STACK check with custom colors

2009-11-16 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: munin

When building a STACK with fields that specify a custom color munin-
graph erroneously gives this (non-fatal) error:

ERROR: First field (\$field\) of graph \$domain\ :: \$name\ ::
\$service\ is STACK. STACK can only be drawn after a LINEx or AREA.

The problem is that $field_count doesn't get incremented when a field specifies
a custom color.

[Bug 483890] [NEW] Race conditions when creating multiple LVM2 snapshots

2009-11-16 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lvm2

I'm creating several LVM2 snapshots in quick succession for backup. The
attached bash script shows what is done.
If I run the script like it is I *always* get error messages on console and in
syslog, presumably all coming from udev. The snapshots seem to work fine but
I'm a bit uneasy about this.

If I add sync; sleep 2; statements between the snapshot commands it
gets a bit better, the error messages only show up sporadically then.

The system is an update-to-date x86-64 Karmic installation. Here are
the error messages from two runs of the test script + entries in syslog:

[Bug 313642] Re: [needs packaging] miniupnpd

2009-07-18 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
@komputes: No, miniupnpd is a UPnP and NAT-PMP traversal daemon.
Apples' AirPort and TimeCapsule run such a daemon too, not miniupnpd
though.

(Ubuntu users can already make port forwarding changes on Apple's time
capsule. Applications like Pidgin and Transmission speak UPnP and NAT-
PMP, they make appropriate mappings while running. If you want to make
permanent port forwardings you better use Apple's AirPort Utility.)

Booting in save graphic mode does not help. During startup of xorg, the PC
switches to black and afterwards,
you can no longer switch to a virtual console or even reboot the machine by
pressing: Ctrl-Alt-Del.
So I'm not able to append any logfiles. Sorry.

[Bug 246789] Re: networking stalls between domU using vif

2009-01-28 Thread Jürgen Hammelmann
Hi all and Chris,

I don't use Xen, the tg3 driver or something else produces this error, too.
Yesterday I have found out that disabling AND reenabling checksum validation
with
'sudo ethtool -K eth0 tx off rx off; sudo ethtool -K eth0 tx on rx on' fixes
the error, too!

Another notebook (HP 530) with another ethernet driver and same distribution
(ubuntu 8.10)
don't have these problems.

Ciao

[Bug 246789] Re: networking stalls between domU using vif

2009-01-27 Thread Jürgen Hammelmann
I have a similar/same error with a lenovo s10e and ubuntu 8.10: it uses the tg3
driver for the fast ethernet device:
connecting with ssh to the netbook and starting firefox or other big
application in this shell, produces an
error Disconnecting: Corrupted MAC on input. and I'm disconnected from the
s10e. In other direction: starting apps from
the s10e on other machines through ssh shell produces no error.

I have found a bugfix: calling 'sudo ethtool -K eth0 tx off rx off',
after calling this command no errors are produced!!!

[Bug 282348] [NEW] kernel 2.6.27-7 deletes ext3 journal

2008-10-12 Thread Jürgen
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 8.10 I have an unexpected inconsistency mounting my second
drive /dev/sdb3
superblock has an invalid ext3journal (inode 8).

fsck is unable to recover the error.

Using a prior kernel 2.6.24-21 results in a successfull automatic file-check,
after manually doing a tune2fs -j the
fs can be used again without any problem.

Sorry that I couldn't switch to the right package

Re: [Bug 63799] Re: kernel hangs while usb-stick is attached during boot

2008-08-31 Thread Jürgen
Hi

after trying to make a USB-Stick bootable (didn't work) I didn't delete the
files. One day I forgot this stick in my PC. The PC started normal from hd
and then had a complete hangup when initializing the USB-subsystem.

My feeling was that nothing external should have any effect on the
boot-process.

Since I got no response I have overwritten the stick since and recreating the
fault will be difficult.

I will make a bootable USB-stick again and try once again the next week!

regards Jürgen Ott

Thanks for taking users serious !!

Seems as if I have a German keyboard layout under Gnome now. So I think this
could be called solved.

Strange thing was that I could no longer check the Default Radiobutton

[Bug 213307] [NEW] upgrade rendered system unusable

2008-04-07 Thread Jürgen Barlag
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After upgrading to Ubuntu hardy (development branch) Release: 8.04
compiz was active, but in the configuration dialog none of the radio

unusable, causing crashes in different applications.

Workaround for me was selecting Visual Effects - None

Possible solution: The old prefernce should be kept after upgrading.

I have the same problem with an USB-Stick. I'm running a plain Ubuntu with KDE

The critical thing is, that if I answer twice yes I get two konqueror windows

From what I understand TOSHIBA is listed twice in the attached hal.txt

[Bug 138986] Re: [gutsy] HP DJ F380 ejecting blank pages

2008-01-01 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Actually it may be a PowerPC problem. My report from October was
invalid.

I have three printers and I rarely use Windows. Before I made my
comment, I mainly used the two other printers, so I did not realize that
the black printing cartridge on the DeskJet had dried out. Shortly after
I made the comment, I had to go to the hospital (for about two months).
Sorry for being late in correcting my mistake.

As all other reporters seem to use the PowerPC architecture, it may
indeed be specific to that architecture.

I had the same problem. Even the manpage of tsclient does not reflect
that info. Which would make a lot of sense in my eyes.

[Bug 138986] Re: [gutsy] HP DJ F380 ejecting blank pages

2007-10-21 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
I have a similar problem with a HP DeskJet 5652 (which is connected to
the local network with a print server). The printer does not always
eject blank pages, it simply forgets to print the text.

I no not use a powerpc, so I do not think that the bug is specific to
the architecture. For me, the problem occurs both with the i386-version
and with the amd64-version of Kubuntu.

I will attach both a scan of the printed CUPS-test page and the output
of the printingbuginfo script run on my computer.

Re: [Bug 131418] Re: Open Office Write styles do not work OK

2007-08-15 Thread Jürgen Römer
 Hello there,

I experience the same problem using NeoOffice 2.1 Patch 0 on MacOsX 10.4.10.
After reopening a writer file I inserted another Paragraph using the
Numbering (Bullets and Numbering). Instead of the concurrent number I
get an 1.1 (2nd level). The bad part is, that the button Restart
Numbering, which is a toggable one, should actually allow to switch
back and forth between the concurrent and a new Numbering. That doesn't
work - The button shows no effect.

So in my Opinion this must be a Bug in the OpenOffice Package.

Are you going to commit a BugReport at OpenOffice.org?

 Greetings

Thanks for the answer, Oliver.
I actually thought that by writing the original message I had reported a
bug to OpenOffice.org.
If this is not the case, how does one report a bug since I would like to
do that.

Greetings
Jürgen

Re: [Bug 131418] Re: Open Office Write styles do not work OK

2007-08-14 Thread Jürgen Römer
 Hi Jürgen,

first it would be helpful to know, which version of Ubuntu and
OpenOffice.org you are using. The next question is, if you used another
version of OpenOffice.org before, where this bug did not occur.

I've never had a similar problem with OpenOffice.org Writer, neither on
Linux nor Windows. Are you using consequently styles like Heading 1-3
and so on (in German: Überschrift 1-3 etc.)? And how do you enable the
numbering for your headings? Are you using the Option Tools-Outline
Numbering (in German: Extras-Kapitelnummerierung) (the right way for
getting headings numbered properly) or are you using e.g. the context-
menu-entry to enable it for each new heading?

 Regards,

 Gert

Hi, Gert, and thanks for your answer.

I have Ubuntu 7.04 and Openoffice 2.2. (the newest). I have had the
problem both in Windows and in Linux. I use consequntly different
headings, usually 3 or 4 levels (Heading 1-4, Otsikko 1-4 in Finnish).

I have activated the numbering from Tools - Outline Numbering. I have
chosen the levels to match the styles (i.e. level 1 - heading 1, level
2, heading 2 etc.)

From Format(?) - Bullets and Numbers(?) I have chosen the correct form,
i.e. 1 - 1.1 - 1.1.1 - instead of, for instance, 1. -a) - b) etc.

It still happens that when I put a heading level 2 in chapter number 4,
I get 1.1 and 1.2 etc instead of 4.1 and 4.2 etc.

[Bug 131418] Open Office Write styles do not work OK

2007-08-09 Thread Jürgen Römer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I use constantly OpenOffice Write. Its style management gives constant
headache. The automatic numbering of styles (. 1., 1.1., 1.2. etc)
sometimes gives 1.1 (or similarly 1.1.1 etc) instead of giving the right
number (for instance 4.2. after 4.1.). This happens often.

Recently, the heading style should have given an italic font but it gave
a normal font instead, although the previous heading of the same level
was in italic.

These sort of bugs are annoying, since OpenOffice is otherwise superb,
especially considering that its open source and FREE!

Hey

the problem is still there in feisty. It can be reproduced.

Before (I think in Edgy) I could switch sessions with ALTF7 and ALTF8
now F8 is not longer associated with a X-Session the second session
starting with ALTF9. Starting with this Function-Key-Gap the problem
occurred the first time.

Even with this bug I need only one strong PC for the family with other members
attaching with slow terminals.

Imaging doing this with a MS-system.

[Bug 67327] xdm interferes with running X

2006-10-21 Thread Jürgen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-common

When someone (A) is working on a local X-Session I can get another X Session
from a remote computer via xdm. There is no problem until I log out from the
remote session.
Now (A) gets the ubuntu splash screen and has to to type strgaltF7 to get
back to his session.

The problem didn´t exist in Breezy and maybe not in early Dapper but I´m
not sure
