[Bug 67226] Re: [karmic] Firefox 3.5 and openoffice do not stick to antialiasing render settings

2009-11-12 Thread Richard Gabriel
Hi,

I was also affected by this bug.
I've tried the workaround from comment #109. After restarting FF, nothing has
changed.
So I tried to restart the system. After restart, the fonts in FF are OK, and
the fonts in Skype (2.1.0 beta) are also OK.

Thanks for the workaround and good luck in resolving this bug!

[Bug 311479] Re: DVDs will not Mount: No medium found

2008-12-29 Thread Richard Gabriel
This is possibly related to the initial burning of the DVDs. Even
though burning the data DVDs completes successfully, a burned DVD could
not be read by the BIOS to see if it was a startup disc. I learned this
after leaving a disc in the drive by accident when restarting. The
drive made strange noises and the computer would not boot. After a
while, I had to manually eject the disc to allow the boot-up process to
continue. This happened before grub loaded. I think it was when the
BIOS was trying to check for a boot disc in the drive.

I hope this information helps to narrow down the problem. The DVDs
still work normally in my PS3 and I can sometimes get them to work on
the desktop computer where they were originally burned.

[Bug 311479] Re: DVDs will not Mount: No medium found

2008-12-29 Thread Richard Gabriel
After much research and trial/error, I discovered that this was actually
a problem with one my my DVD drives. I thought it was affecting several
computers because, in some cases, I received a dbus error after
inserting a burned DVD-R. However, I now suspect that this dbus message
is related to a longer-than-normal load time for the DVD-R . It seems
benign and would be best investigated within a separate bug report.

To summarize, one computer is never able to read DVD-Rs. Either the
drive doesn't support that format or it is broken. My other system is
able to load burned DVD-Rs, but I sometimes receive a dbus warning. The
PS3 is always able to read them without issues.

I am marking this bug as invalid.

[Bug 121246] Re: Can´t mount written dvd ´s. Empty media (SATA DVD+- Writer)

2008-12-25 Thread Richard Gabriel
I believe I am affected by this bug as well. It may be a different
problem, but it seems related. Burned DATA DVDs can't seem to be
mounted. I have tested kernel 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-11 on Intrepid.
Blank DVDs are seen normally and I have no trouble burning. However,
once they are burned, they can't be mounted. I have tested several
brands of blank DVDs, different computers/drives running Ubuntu, and
burning with different applications. I have not found a fix yet.

Testing the burned DVDs in other devices (ie. PS3) show that they can be
mounted and used normally. No messages are recorded in logs, but attempting to
mount the disc manually produces this error:
mount: No medium found

Let me know if you need more information to track this down.

[Bug 144242] Re: DVD+R disc does not mount

2008-12-25 Thread Richard Gabriel
I am having a similar issue with DVDs that I burned with Ubuntu. I am
adding this note because it might be related.

DVDs that I burned with Ubuntu cannot be mounted. I have tested this
with several blank DVD brands, multiple applications, and several
computers (running Intrepid). The same DVDs are read normally in other
devices (ie. PS3). Others in the Ubuntu forums have suggested that this
may be a kernel config issue. However, I haven't been able to find any
definitive fix.

[Bug 311479] [NEW] DVDs will not Mount: No medium found

2008-12-25 Thread Richard Gabriel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.27

DVDs that I have burned with Ubuntu cannot be mounted in most cases. I
have tried several brands of blank DVDs, different applications to burn
(Brasero and nautilus-cd-burner), and I have tried to load the discs in
multiple computers (all running Intrepid). I have not found a solution
to this. The burned DVDs do work normally in other devices (ie. PS3).

No errors or messages are written to the logs. However, gnome does not
automatically mount the inserted DVD data discs. Attempting to mount
them manually returns the following: No medium found. The discs are
burned correctly and the work normally outside of Ubuntu.

I assigned this to the linux-source package because I suspect that this
may be a kernel config issue, but I'm not sure. I tested with kernel
2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-11 and got the same result. Please re-assign if the
package is wrong.

[Bug 271932] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in DRIGetContextStore()

2008-12-05 Thread Richard Gabriel
I believe the last comment referred to a different video card. I have
the video card mentioned in this bug description and I still cannot log

DRI is enabled. Disabling DRI makes the login possible, but the
computer is very slow. I ended up reverting to Hardy because this
problem caused such a reduction in productivity.

This may be a duplicate of bug #285250.

[Bug 285250] Re: [i845G] Hard crash entering X

2008-11-12 Thread Richard Gabriel
I think they are waiting on an upstream fix from xorg. I have no idea

partial workaround. However, it slows down rendering on my machine so
much that I had to revert back to Hardy. I am hoping for a real fix

2008-11-04 Thread Richard Gabriel
I can confirm that removing all compiz packages does work around this
problem now. I don't even need to explicitly specify the intel

but now it works.

Still, I would prefer compiz and the video rendering is not as fast as
it used to be.

[Bug 221119] Re: [gutsy, hardy, intrepid] Blank screen and (EE) intel(0): overrun on pipe B! on i945GM using intel driver

2008-11-03 Thread Richard Gabriel
Removing compiz did not solve the problem for me. As a workaround,
disabling DRI in xorg.conf seems to allow a user to log in normally.
Compiz will not work in this case and rendering is noticeably slower.
My graphics card is:

Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 03)

I believe this has been traced to a bug in the xorg intel driver and
needs to be fixed upstream.

Yah, it's too bad they couldn't get a fix in sooner, but it was probably
more risky to introduce a new upstream version before release. I'm not
even sure this has been fixed upstream yet. However, I'm sure it will

I am running with DRI turned off for now. It's slow and annoying, but

2008-10-26 Thread Richard Gabriel
I tried your xorg.conf (adjusting for my actual screen) and still no
luck. In addition, after the latest updates, the problem seems worse.
Now, I can't even log in when disabling hardware acceleration. Starting
gdm just gives me a blank screen. It doesn't seem to crash any more
though so I can switch to the console and stop it manually. The log
shows many errors like this:

(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe A!

Perhaps Mandriva is using a different version of xorg or they have
patched it to work around this issue.

[Bug 285250] Re: Hard crash entering X with Intel 82845G chipset

2008-10-23 Thread Richard Gabriel
I have attached my xorg.conf. It allows normal login and usage of the

produces very slow screen redraws, unnecessary CPU utilization, and
compiz won't run (among other things). It's a bad workaround, but it
functions until this can be fixed.

This seems to be still happening with the latest Intrepid beta. I
believe that a program that starts during login crashes. I have yet to

Nothing helpful is inserted into the .xsession_errors file. In fact,

2008-08-03 Thread Richard Gabriel
Well, I had been working with a bunch of D600 laptops. The one in
question had a screen with a maximum resolution of 1024x768. The others
supported 1400x1050 natively. I neglected to check the actual native
resolution for the system in question. Therefore, I didn't really
discover a fix. I just found that I was not actually seeing this bug.

Make sure that your laptop actually supports a higher resolution
natively. Keep in mind that the D600s are normally advertised with
support for 1400x1050, but that just applies to external screens. The
built-in LCD doesn't always support this high resolution. I hope that
helps.

[Bug 214763] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 : after installing april 8/2008 updates, hard drive led never stops flashing and CPU consuption is VERY high

2008-04-21 Thread Richard Gabriel
I may be having a similar problem. Periodically throughout the day, the
hard drive is vigorously accessed. My CPU usage does not increase to
100%, but some processing is going on. Running top from the command
line doesn't reveal any obvious suspects and I have scanned through the
complete process list to no avail. I wonder if Firefox might be working
with its cache or something, but that's a long shot. I do not have
tracker installed and there is no indexing going on. Any ideas?

[Bug 210346] [NEW] Network Manager does not automatically connect on login

2008-04-01 Thread Richard Gabriel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

With the latest version of Network Manager in Hardy, it no longer
connects to my wireless network automatically upon login. I have to
manually select the network each time. Furthermore, sometimes it will
connect to the network, show signal strength, and then immediately
disconnect. Selecting the network a second time always creates a more
permanent connection.

This issue did happen in the past and then it looked to be fixed.
However, it is resurfacing in the latest Hardy packages. I am happy to
provide any other information that might be helpful.

[Bug 208008] [NEW] Pidgin Notification Icon blinking incorrectly

2008-03-27 Thread Richard Gabriel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

When pidgin is set to launch automatically upon login and the Blink on
new Message setting is enabled, the space taken up in the notification
area is much larger than it should be when blinking. It actually grows
and shrinks as the icon blinks. This only happens with pidgin, but very
few applications have icons that blink in the notification area.

This only appears to happen when pidgin is configured to start
automatically. Perhaps it has to do with the order in which things are
launched while logging in.

Manually exiting and then re-launching pidgin fixes the problem until
the next login.

I am running the latest Hardy beta, but I believe this happens in gutsy
as well.

that narrowing this problem down to the correct process affected is

[Bug 58895] Re: Signing with nautilus fails, Encryption with nautilus crashes seahorse-tool

2006-09-07 Thread Richard Gabriel
I am also having this issue. It may be that seahorse-tool (the command

is the command line output:

seahorse-tool -s FILE

running

** (seahorse-tool:6101): CRITICAL **: cryptui_keyset_key_get_string:

However, the daemon is indeed running:

Also, signing and encrypting when the deamon is running works well in

However, I cannot get it to print without a margin. gnome-photo-printer
works the best, but there is still a slight margin on all sides. I
believe I have all settings correct within the application and I have
set all margins to 0.00. I'm guessing there is some margin setting in a
cups configuration file somewhere that I need to change? Any help would

[Bug 46209] Re: Nautilus Passes Relative Path to vim for Remote Files

2006-06-30 Thread Richard Gabriel
I tested this and I think that in your syntax above, path refers to
the absolute path with leading slashes. When I substitute an absolute
path including the leading slash for the word path in your above
command line example, it works correctly and opens the remote file.

Working command line example:
gvim -f sftp://SERVER//home/USER/FILE.txt

In this case, path is /home/USER/FILE.txt. That being said, does
this still indicate a vim bug?

The latest dapper kernel, 2.6.15-25-686, causes slowness and choppy
animation on my laptop. linux-image-2.6.15-23-686 works normally and is
speedy. I believe this has to do with the following change in the
changelog from 2.6.15-23 to 2.6.15-25.

* i386/amd64: Change HZ=1000 to HZ=250. The high frequency was causing
high power consumption on some laptops, and also some latency under
certain I/O loads.

I never noticed high power consumption on the -23 kernel. Also, the new

my laptop that is noticeably slow and choppy.
