Hi Chris,

No - I'm not experiencing this anymore.

You can close this bug.

f3a97, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any

so, could you please test for this with the latest development release

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal

 apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
 would not be helpful.

 Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1268870] [NEW] Download and install sametime

2014-01-14 Thread Jarkko Korpi
Public bug reported:

This is more like a feature request.

I am just doing distro upgrade from command line.

It downloads around 1 gigabyte of files.

Why it downloads the files 1st and then starts to install?

Depending of connection this can take a lot of time.

It could install files that dont need depencies or some checks and
continue downloading same time.

The time used to download and install would decrease.

This should be just a packaging change and a patch for Mesa 10.0.1 is at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=656719#240

As it continues to be more WIP than stable (correct me if I'm wrong), it
should probably stay in universe and not be installed by default. Still,
offering it would be nice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1243261] Re: apparent GPU hang on haswell laptop when playing movie using XVideo output

Verifying fullscreen video working good on Haswell with updated xserver-
xorg-video-intel-lts-saucy from precise-proposed. Tested various videos
and seeking in mplayer -vo xv and totem (gstreamer-properties set to the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1243261] Re: apparent GPU hang on haswell laptop when playing movie using XVideo output

2014-01-14 Thread Koichi Takahashi
Hi Colin,

I cannot confirm this fix immediately because I now use a different
machine (the bug was a show stopper for my business).

However, if mplayer/totem/gstreamer now works ok I suppose the
libreoffice problem would also be fixed.

I very much appreciate your hard work. Keep going Ubuntu!

Unless there's proof I do not think this bug is in xorg, can you try

The Laptop screen has a hardware resolution of 1366x768, the external monitor a
hardware resolution of 1280x1024.

If I set up the second monitor using

xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 1368x0 --rotate normal --output
LVDS --mode 1366x768 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
(or the gnome gui, the effects are equal)

I expect:
1) the left 1366x768 area to be on the laptop screen, and
2) the right 1280x1024 area to be on the big monitor.

But I observe:
1) happens as expected
2) happens almost. Instead, the 2 rightmost pixels on the laptop monitor are
repeated on the left border of the big monitor and the two rightmost columns of
the right monitor are not visible on any monitor at all.

If I switch the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x720 (or any more
common resolution), this effect does not occur and everything works as
expected.

I assume the first '--pos 1368x0' is a typo and should be '--pos
1366x0'.

I'm afraid this is not easily fixable, as the hardware only supports
horizontal offsets which are a multiple of 4, so the drivers just round
down values that aren't.

As Michel noted, this is a hardware limitation. To fix this properly,
the xserver would need to be changed to allocate separate buffers for

Unfortunately, this is a fairly major task.

Vertical alignments have to a multiple of 2 as well. It applies to most
Radeon asics. Not sure about other vendors, but it's likely they may
have similar requirements.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1268938] [NEW] Banding/dithering problem on Intel HD 4000

2014-01-14 Thread Simone Scalabrino
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell XPS 14 with integrated Intel HD 4000.
The problem is that the coloring si really bad (in gradients, for
example, bands of colors can be distinguished). It's like the color
depth is not really 24bit.

This issue is known, and Intel never fixed it in Windows drivers
(https://communities.intel.com/thread/29420?start=0tstart=0).

I searched and the problem is probably due to HDMI different color range
(16-235); when it's scaled in laptop's display standard 0-255 some
colors are lost.

I experienced the same issue in Ubuntu 13.10.

The package version is 2:2.21.9-0ubuntu0~raring

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode

Brian Burch, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
 /daily-live/current/ .

The only machine I could test with normally runs headless, so it took a
while to schedule some maintenance time - sorry for the delay.

I booted the 14.04 iso from DVD (too big for a CD and the machine's BIOS
would not boot from a USB stick). The Dell screen displayed the splash
screen and normal desktop approx 1 inch shifted to the right, exactly as
originally reported. I was disappointed, and was about to give up.
Something made me think to perform the screen auto-adjust function...
the image wiggled around for a moment, and then displayed PERFECTLY!

That machine normally runs ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and has recently been
updated with the latest fixes. I booted the production 12.04 system
where the desktop was misaligned and deliberately set to a low
resolution so the entire image would be visible. I changed the screen
resolution settings to the optimal value and it was aligned perfectly
because the screen had already adjusted and memorised this SVGA
resolution alignment.

I presume the quirk for my display was incorporated in a 12.04
repository update at some time in the past, but I had overlooked the
notice and so continued using the sub-optimal resolution.

Thank you for suggesting that I run this test. You can close the bug for
12.04, 14.04, and any other releases it might apply to.

Regards,

Brian

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
 would not be helpful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1190341] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Backlight stopped working after update of linux-image with nvidia 313.30

2014-01-14 Thread Bruno Beaufils
I modified the bug description since using nouveau (as it is the case
with live iso images) instead of nvidia-binary does not change anything
withe respect to backlight.

** Description changed:

I am using Ubuntu 13.04, nvidia 313.30, fresh installation from scratch,
on a MacBookPro10,1 (the one with Retina display). Two of my partition
are encrypted (swap and /srv on which /home is bind mounted).Since some
upgrade to linux-image-3.8.0-24 backlight control does not work anymore.
I am stuck with 3.8.0-23 in order to get something kind of working (I
have to go in sleep mode at least once in order to get backlight control
available). The last almost working kernel is 3.8.0-23. I even tried
3.9.0-030900 upstream kernel with no success. Everything was working
fine with the first installation of 13.04.

- WORKAROUND: Use nouveau.
+ Using nouveau instead of nvidia-binary is no workaround unfortunately

 Title:
[ivb + nvidia] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS complete freeze

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
I've read a few similar bugs reported, but none of them were resolved
or were putted in an incomplete status.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and it freezes all of a sudden.
   The keyboard/mouse stop working.
   Can't open any other TTY.
The only solution is a hard reboot from button.

   Configuration:
   Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
   Release: 12.04
   Lenovo ThinkPad Edge Laptop
   Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 2
   OS-type: 32-bit
   4GB RAM
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics
 Controller (rev 09)
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0de9 (rev a1)

I have installed on it a basic LAMP configuration, plus netbeans 7.2,
 FileZilla 3.5.3, Google Chrome.
I also have an external monitor (I mention it because there was another
bug similar that was saying that the monitor is the problem, but mine
freezes regardless if I use or not the monitor)

I don't think there are any logs as the system freezes without any
warning (no CPU overheating, no lag...)

It doesn't matter how many programs I have opened, because it freezes
even if I close all programs, or even if I have Netbeans, Chrome(10+
tabs +youtube), FileZilla, messenger, libre office, remmina and music
on all in the same time.

Sometimes it crashes as soon as I start using a program, other times
crashes 2,3 times one after another on restart, and other times it
doesn't crash for days (the longest period without a crash is for 3-4
   days).

What is even more strange is that I have another laptop with Ubuntu ( a
Dell Inspiron), with same software configuration and external monitor, and
 it never crashed.

The only software difference is that the one that doesn't crash I
downloaded the OS from ubuntu.com, and for the one that crashes I took
the OS from a Romanian proxy. Could these be the issue?

Please tell what log files to upload that may be of any help.

   Thanks,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1253068] Re: Constant GPU Lock-ups with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10

2014-01-14 Thread Luis Mendes
apport information

** Description changed:

Problem happens with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10, didn't happen with Ubuntu 12.04
LTS
The problem occurs as a general rule during the first 30 minutes of use and
keeps happening across several following reboots and shutdown/power on cycles.

I've a Pentium IV 3.06GHz with Hyperthreading enabled and a graphic card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G73 [GeForce 7600 GS]
(rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Region 2: Memory at f900 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]

Capabilities: access denied

And I've been observing GPU lockups like the ones in attachment since Ubuntu
13.04 no matter I use the nouveau or nvidia drivers any version. In fact nvidia
drivers worses the problem appearance rate. These problems didn't happen with
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running on same machine with same hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1253068] Re: Constant GPU Lock-ups with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10

2014-01-14 Thread Luis Mendes
-- The logs above refer to a GPU lock-up on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty that
happened while using X with PDF viewer and Firefox (not through reboot
cycle like was the case in previous log), although distribution seems
more stable from GPU lock-up point of view. Occurrences seem to have
reduced.

-- To log information with apport I used a remote SSH connection to the
affected machine.

-- I will now switch video driver to NVIDIA proprietary and re-check if
issues still verifies with the new driver as was the case with Ubuntu
11.04 and 11.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1254131] Re: Lubuntu 13.10 lid close freeze

2014-01-14 Thread Poisoned Dragon
I found that this issue exists with any release that uses Kernel 3.7 or
newer. I currently use Kubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell Latitude D505,
because I am unable to use any newer, supported, release. Quantal works
fine, but it is verging on EOL. As an alternative, I can install the
linux-generic-lts-quantal package onto my LTS. I have even tested the
alpha release of Kubuntu 14.04 and still have issues with the system
halting, when the lid is closed.

In short, Kernels 3.2 (Precise) and 3.5 (Quantal) have no hardware
issues with the laptop lid switch. Kernel 3.7 (Saucy) and above halt the
system when the lid is closed.

Yes, it's still an issue. I am basically forced to run Xubuntu rather
than Ubuntu.

I don't mind trying the latest development release if you think there
has been work there to fix this problem, which I think was basically due
to a video card that is not supported by Ubuntu. But I don't want to
waste my time if you are not aware of such a fix.

Which is it?

 Title:
[GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] video flicker on any I/O activity with
   nouveau; OK with nv driver

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
   Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

   System:
   Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
   Release: 10.04 (beta 1)
   Package:
   xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.15+git20100219+9b4118d-0ubuntu4
(or one of its kernel module dependencies)
   Maybe related: #425372

   Expectation:

Default Xorg driver should work with no video artifacts.

   Observation:

Bad screen flicker with default Xorg driver.

   Details:

I installed the 10.04 beta from CD on Wednesday (incidentially,
compliments for the smooth install). Already upon installation, the
display did flicker badly whenever the CD was read or even the mouse
moved. Flicker did already start at the initial splash screen. The
   system was fully responsive otherwise.

On reboot post-installation, gdm came up OK but with the same flicker
problems. The 'Monitors' control panel only offered the 2048x1536
resolution at 80 Hz with no other options.

Tried to install and use one of the non-free nvidia drivers, this
failed because the nouveau kernel module was loaded always and could
not be unloaded (drm loads nouveau before framebuffer console init. as
near as I can make out). With nvidia-current unable to load, the X
server could not use the 'nvidia' driver.

Switching xorg.conf to use the 'nv' driver results in a much better
screen display (only occasional flicker) although the driver only
supports 2048x1536 at 60 Hz. 1600x1200@85 Hz is useable.

The main board is a dual Athlon X2 AMD M2N68-AM Plus with onboard
   nVidia graphics chipset.

I append partial dmesg and lspci output. If there is any other
information that could be of help, let me know.

weird, that should have sent the errors to https://errors.ubuntu.com.

Here's how to enable the crash interception component, please give it a try:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1111884] Re: 10de:0611 nouveau fails at suspend/resume - PAGE_NOT_PRESENT

2014-01-14 Thread Brian Norris
I believe 10de:0611 is the associated PCI ID of the NVIDIA GPU on which
this problem was seen. You can check yours with something like lspci -nn

I'm not sure about latest-bios-0709. I assume it helps with tracking.

BTW, I've also see this problem on a PCI ID of 10de:0659:

$ lspci -nn | grep NVIDIA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G96GL [Quadro FX
580] [10de:0659] (rev a1)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1262377] Re: Screen rendering problem

2014-01-14 Thread dbclinton
Hi,
Sorry it took me so long to get to this, but I finally managed to download the
daily build and run it (in VirtualBox) on my machine. I tried with both Unity
and Gnome-Fallback (which is what I'm using on my real install) and the problem
had disappeared for both. Unless VB interfaces differently with my video
driver, I think I can say that you've solved the problem!
Thanks,
David

2014-01-14 Thread dbclinton
Just in case a VirtualBox session in fact bypasses Trinity driver, I ran a live
session with the daily build and the problem was solved for that, too. The only
thing was that I'm not aware of any way to run gnome-fallback in a live
session...

I was running quite a few thing simultaneously, boinc, Netflix as
outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/penalvch#Netflix_in_Xubuntu , a few
Firefox windows, LibreOffice, Gnumeric, and Mousepad. I was switching
between Firefox windows and I noticed a graphical glitch, and then this
crash report. This is not reproducible, doing exactly what I did, nor
has it happened before. As well, I did not have to restart, it appeared
to recover quite gracefully.

2014-01-14 Thread shankao
About the bug itself: can you please add here the output of the command: cat
/proc/cmdline and dmesg | grep HDMI ?
Also, note that, once you have enabled the HDMI audio option in the kernel, you
need to select it for output on the ubuntu sound settings.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 683905] [NEW] Xorg locks up after crash with Radeon HD5670 and dual-monitor setup

2014-01-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xorg

I recently installed a new HD5670 graphics card, with two monitors
connected. After a bunch of work, I finally got it all working, but
then I rebooted, and the system froze hard (couldn't ping from another
machine, etc). I logged in remotely and started experimenting, and
discovered the problem was that X was failing to deal with my xorg.conf
file. In particular, this part:

Section Monitor
Identifier 0-DFP1
Option VendorName ATI Proprietary Driver
Option ModelName Generic Autodetecting Monitor
Option DPMS true
Option PreferredMode 2560x1440
Option TargetRefresh 60
Option Position 0 0
Option Rotate normal
Option Disable false
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier 0-DFP3
Option VendorName ATI Proprietary Driver
Option ModelName Generic Autodetecting Monitor
Option DPMS true
Option PreferredMode 1600x1200
Option TargetRefresh 60
Option Position 2560 0
Option Rotate left
Option Disable false
EndSection

Section Device
Identifier aticonfig-Device[0]-0
Driver fglrx
Option Monitor-DFP1 0-DFP1
# this is the culprit here:
Option Monitor-DFP3 0-DFP3
BusID PCI:1:0:0
EndSection

I booted into recovery mode without X, ssh'd in, and tried starting X by
hand. I discovered that with two monitors in the Device section as
above, the X server fails an assertion. stdout looks like this:

X.Org X Server 1.9.0
Release Date: 2010-08-20
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-27-server i686 Ubuntu
Current Operating System: Linux tempest 2.6.35-23-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Wed
Nov 24 10:18:49 UTC 2010 i686
Kernel command line: root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro single
Build Date: 16 September 2010 05:39:22PM
xorg-server 2:1.9.0-0ubuntu7 (For technical support please see
http://www.ubuntu.com/support)
Current version of pixman: 0.18.4
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log, Time: Wed Dec  1 17:04:42 2010
(++) Using config file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(==) Using system config directory /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@1:0:1) found
X: ../../dix/pixmap.c:118: AllocatePixmap: Assertion `pScreen-totalPixmapSize
 0' failed.
Abort
Exit 134

apparently it leaves things in an unclean state, because if I run the X
server again at this point, the machine freezes hard. It looks like gdm
tries restarting the X server if it fails the first time, so with the
xorg.conf as above, I believe the second try freezes the machine.

If I comment out the second monitor Option in the Device section,
everything starts up fine. If I comment out the first monitor, then I
get the same abort, so it may be an artifact of the specific
configuration of that second monitor, rather than the second monitor
itself.
