Re: Foreman Cloudstack provider

Yes it deploys instances, not hypervisors.
And yes, it doesn't work on basic zones, but the basic framework is
there, so it's probably extensible to make Basic zones work; just no
one has scratched that itch yet.

There were some folks talking about doing work in that area, but not
sure if they have made any progress or not.

2014-06-25 Thread David Nalley
This is awesome on Nux's part. I am thrilled to see this come to fruition.

This is not an official CloudStack deployment. There are a number of
reasons why this needs to be external (for instance, much of what he
has up for download is GPL-licensed; it's not our software, etc) In
addition, Infra does well to distribute the software we actually
produce, we'd politely decline the offer to provide a service like Nux
has stood up. :)

Subject: OpenVM.eu - repository of Cloudstack images and appliances

Hi,

I've been intending to do this for a while, but decided it has to happen this
summer so here goes:

http://www.openvm.eu - A repository of Cloudstack images and appliances!

Do not be fooled by it's current façade, it will get better.
It only has one template for now, but I expect this number to increase
significantly in the coming weeks.
It is just what I managed to do in a very short time at $work today and
thought it might be worth a mention at tomorrow's European meeting in London.

I'll add a lot more templates, with a focus on CentOS and Cloudstack, of
course, as this is where my interests lie at the moment.
In time I will add more OSes and platforms (Openstack and OpenNebula).

The templates are built on/for KVM, but should be able to boot on a variety
of hypervisors (I think it will work on Xen/Xenserver, VMware, HyperV),
although the file format is QCOW2.
I'll have to check my resources to see if I can afford the extra disk space
and CPU time to offer VHD/RAW files as well.

All templates are 8 GB in size unless specified otherwise.

I'll keep the list updated.

Comments, questions, suggestions etc welcome!

Lucian

We at Mozilla have a bit of an unusual use-case, and I'm wondering how
practical it will be to add support for it. I'm sure there will be a decent
amount of coding involved, and if those can be distributed as distinct
plugins or upstreamed to the CloudStack distribution, all the better! We are
big supporters of OSS at Mozilla, after all.

The case is this: we have a bunch of typical commodity servers, a bunch of
Mac Minis, and a bunch of development boards (Pandaboards, in particular).
We have tools in place for doing manual provisioning: IPMI for server power
and IP-addressable power supplies for the Minis and Pandaboards, along with
MDT for Windows, Kickstart for Linux (both PXE), Casper for OS X (Netboot),
and a PXE-based custom solution for development boards[2]. Our DNS, DHCP,
and network configuration is built from our internal inventory app[3], so
CloudStack would need to be able to interface with inventory to make such
changes. We'd like to dynamically provision OS's onto all of this hardware,
with the servers getting either Linux and Windows, the Minis getting various
flavors of OS X, and the development boards getting various flavors of
 Android and Firefox OS.

My hope is that we could add plugins that would glue CloudStack to some of
the tools we're already using. Is that practical? Totally impractical? Am
I taking the wrong approach? Will I be able to support all of these various
backends in a single CloudStack instance?

 TIA,
 Dustin

P.S. Apologies for those who saw a similar post on the OpenStack list - I am,
indeed, looking for similar feedback here.

Hi Dustin, I am far from an expert on all of the baremetal stuff but
I'll try and take a first stab; and I've cced some folks who should be
able to help provide better answers.

So CloudStack's baremetal support has become a bit more modular; so
let me start with the history. Essentially in the 3.x days it was Ping
- and we had an interface to interact with PING. If you've used PING
you know that it's full of compromises, and while arguably simpler
than RIS was for Windows deployment, it's absolutely archaic compared
to some of the better tools out there for Unix-based distributions.

So the second generation of baremetal in CloudStack was designed with
the idea that there would be 'something' handling provisioning and
that CloudStack needed to be able to interact with it; but if you are
implementing a IaaS layer you should probably already have a modern
provisioning system in place, and we should just be able to talk to
it. (ideally via an API) So today there are essentially three
baremetal plugins - PING, Kickstart, and UCS (though UCS is much more
than just provisionining.) I don't know directly about UCS, but
Kickstart and PING control server power/boot with IPMI; so not a whole
lot different.

I think the documents that you found are largely from a wiki migration
- I've linked to some of the others below that are a bit more updated.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Baremetal+KickStart
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Enhanced+Baremetal+support+on+Cisco+UCS
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Plug-ins%2C+Modules%2C+and+Extensions

Someone at one point had a document on writing your own plugin for
baremetal - I'll try and scrounge around and find it.

In short, completely doable to write your own plugins to do what you
are looking for; and I'd love to see your patches for adding support
for Casper and MDT :) CloudStack can easily do any number of
'baremetal' plugins in a single plane of management; along with mixing
and matching hypervisors. In example, you could have a single zone[1]
with KVM, VMware, Xenserver hypervisor offerings as well as utilizing
a number of different baremetal plugins (which for all intents and
purposes, CloudStack treats as a 'hypervisor')

Tuna, since you are a committer you can commit your patches to the 4.2

If it's not on 4.3 branch yet, it's probably too late because we are way past

If it's a bug, lets get it identified (and filed) and discuss on dev@,

Re: Cloudstack user-data empty for VMs

Yeah - it's definitely a work in progress - if you look at Dan Bode's
cloudstack_resources, he actually has a ton of additional work in a
different branch that hasn't yet been validated. It's on my list to
get around to that in the next few weeks. What you likely saw (esp if
it was my presentation) was a combination of Jason Hancock's work
around userdata and his fact - and then separately the resources and
types for CloudStack. There are some folks who use CloudStack's
records of hosts as a ENC - and that's where the 'Group=' stuff leaks
into the presentation - essentially they query for the host - and
parse the Group records and make catalog decisions off of that rather
than a fact. (Keep in mind the 'down side' of going the fact route, is
that essentially an attacker could pass any information back to puppet
and get anything in the catalog theoretically)

Please do submit a pull request for the userdata feature (feel free to
submit it against my repo or Dan's)

Re: Compute offerings and Templates

2013-11-17 Thread David Nalley
The question is (at least in my mind) do you want the deployment to
fail (appropriately) or to 'work' from the end user perspective, even
if it doesn't follow your way of getting things done perfectly.

Before we dig into it, you could create template names or descriptions
with hints to help folks along.

So the easiest solution is to tag one of your XS storage offerings
with the same tags. So if someone screws up, and chooses a XS
template, and a VMW-intended service offering, it will still deploy -
they'll be slightly disappointed but at least working.

Neither of these seem elegant - ideally we'd limit what you could see
based on the previous choices before, but CloudStack doesn't currently
do that.

So the folks at TrendMicro have done some work around client-focused
crypto of volumes in CloudStack.

CloudStack itself doesn't have object storage (we consume object

of good projects that do; Ceph, RiakCS, OpenStack Swift, etc.)

You might want to look at HekaFS as well - it's a translator atop

to ensure isolation even if the security in Gluster is compromised.

Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. I still get exactly the same
error. I deleted the old template, reran the command with the new URL. When
that did not work I re-initialized the db and re-installed the template
 again.

I followed the 4.2 install procedures. I just used the old URL.

 @Yugnadhar

I have a single server for ACS and NFS. :/export/secondary is the NFS
share and it is mounted as /mnt/secondary. I followed the instructions in
the ACS docs on how to setup NFS. But nevertheless I tried to install the
template into /export/secondary like you said. It worked fine and replaced
the existing template. It is just the same directory.

 Any other ideas?

Is it still the correct URL for CS 4.2? It was successfully installed

I do not believe this is the correct url. You need to get the new
templates. Take a look at the following url:

It's got the instructions for ACS 4.2

It depends on the scope of changes. For a document like the release
notes, assuming someone already has an updated SVN tree, it shouldn't
take more than 30 minutes to update, and it could happen pretty
regularly. If it's every document in a single release, that's
historically taken the better part of a day. I don't think we'll get
away with getting it to happen in an automated fashion, simply because
it requires commit access to SVN, which is tied to an individual,
which means someone would need to expose their creds, which would be a
 bad thing.

Re: Doc Updates

2013-10-10 Thread David Nalley
That is how it has been done previously - but we recently moved docs
to their own repo to separate the software lifecycle from the docs
lifecycle, and we have already had at least one update pushed to the
docs post-release. The goal is to try and keep this up, and I hope to
publish another set of updates tomorrow or over the weekend.

Bad docs make even the best software unusable IMO. That said, we could
use more eyeballs - at least identify the problems for us. Bonus
points for fixes.

Waiting for the next patch release of the software so that the docs get
updated is causing problems with folks not being able to get CloudStack
installed properly and therefore gives them a bad impression of the
 maturity of CloudStack.

It makes no sense to me why there are multiple versions of documents for
each of the point releases (currently there is 4.0.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1.0,
4.1.1 and 4.0.2 docs) when the feature set has not changed within each of
these. I understand that the docs are built as part of the build and
release process but why does that have to impact the rate at which the
primary doc site is updated. Can't the patch releases simply update the
release notes? Personally I think there should be a single 4.x version of
the docs (I would be ok with a 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 versions too if major
features are going to be added to them). Maybe the doc site should have
wiki like capabilities so that it can be more easily maintained.

 ok, I am done ranting...

In a few words; not easily.
CloudStack talks to the XenAPI - which CentOS doesn't have by default.
There was some work to build XAPI on EL6 with the CentOS + Xen work

Not really - essentially it's taking the running QCOW2 or VHD and

The feature could be added to the repository at essentially anytime. I

I've cced Ilya - he's backported freshly developed features for

Please read the tcpdump manpage for a better explanation, but
essentially, what comes into the nic is written to tcpdump's buffers,
and if tcpdump can't keep up, the kernel will overwrite or 'drop'
packets from the tcpdump buffer. What the nic drops (not iptables)

Re: How to migrate instances of OpenStack to Cloudstack.

2013-07-15 Thread David Nalley
I agree with this statement. Configuration of EL6 or Ubuntu or even
Windows image should be trivial given configuration management.

That said, I understand there are some situations where it isn't
practical, or config management isn't in use. The technical answer is:

For converting to/from KVM to to/from raw formats or VMDK qemu-img is
your friend.
For converting to/from VHD for xen, vhd-util is your friend, though
there are several other apps out there.
I have been in places where I had to use qemu-img to do conversions
rather than 'doing it the right way' and it's worked well. If I had
the option though, I think I'd have preferred to put config management
in place and do it in that manner.

I am guessing you are using NFS for your Primary Storage.

This is actually 'by design'. The logic is that if the storage goes offline,
then all VMs must have also failed, and a 'forced' reboot of the Host 'might'
 automatically fix things.

This is great if you only have one Primary Storage, but typically you have
more than one, so whilst the reboot might fix the failed storage, it will
also kill off all the perfectly good VMs which were still happily running.

The fix for XenServer Hosts is to:

 1. Modify /opt/xensource/bin/xenheartbeat.sh on all your Hosts, commenting
out the two entries which have reboot -f

 2. Identify the PID of the script - pidof -x xenheartbeat.sh

 3. Restart the Script - kill pid

 4. Force reconnect Host from the UI, the script will then re-launch on
 reconnect

If you running KVM, I'm guessing there is a similar script, but I have not
tried this yet for anything other than XenSever (it does not apply to ESXi)

 Subject: Primary storage failure

 Hello everyone

I'm testing failure scenarios, and I have noticed that as soon as the primary
 storage gets offline.

cloudstack management server seems to think that the hypervisor is not
responding and it will reboot the node, if you have number of of nodes it
will eventually reboot all of them. (losing everything .. fun! )

What if I have multiple primary storage and one of them failed? it will
reboot all of my hypervisors? it doesn't seems right to me.

Is there is a way to control this behavior?

it seems that cloud stack management server needs to be a little smarter.

Hi William:

So there are two parts to this:

1. If you set the instance name on deploy - it should be picked up and
set the hostname (eg. vmname above) by the DHCP client.

2. If you set the 'network domain' for the account, it should populate
the 'domain.com' portion of the name, again by the DHCP client.

Hope this helps.

You need to just take care to ensure that you extract the vim* jar files (for
vmware's vi sdk) after you download the websdk 510 file, and copy them over
 to your deps directory.

Typically, for non-oss, this is what you will need to do:

find / | grep -I systemvm.iso; rm all the files found (you needn't do this
everytime - I do this whenever I deploy a fresh cloudstack testbed).
 cd deps;
wget and rename all jar files as directed; download the vi sdk jar files, and
 extract the jars from them; rename as directed;
 ./install-non-oss.sh

 cd ../
mvn clean; mvn install -P systemvm -Dnonoss -DskipTests; mvn install -Dnonoss
 -DskipTests
If you have a mysql root password set, cp utils/conf/db.properties
 utils/conf/db.properties.override; edit db.properties.override to set
 db.root.password=your_mysql_root_password
 mvn -e -P developer -pl developer -Ddeploydb;
 mvn -pl :cloud-client-ui jetty:run -Dnonoss

The -DskipTests should not be used if you have edited any part of the code,
for it skips running mockito tests.

Re: native networking or sdn

 Hi,

or built-in virtual network used by cloudstack? i know that it can be plugged
in with 3rd party (like nicira) but what is the built-in networking stack
used? For openstack they use quantum right...how about cloudstack?

 Thanks.

Hi John:

So there isn't really a default.

In the old days we used to define it as 'basic' or 'advanced'
networking. I think those were misnomers. Now we talk about Isolation
types:

Some of these simply don't work on certain hypervisors.

As of 4.0

* Basic Networking - AKA Security Groups - uses a flat-layer-2 network
and has the hypervisor's bridge perform layer-3 isolation. CloudStack
takes the responsibility of orchestrating these bridges to ensure
their state is correct. This gives you a lot more scalability than
VLANs, and is less demanding on networking hardware itself, but it
also means that constructs like VLANs aren't really applicable, and
you lose broadcast traffic, etc.

* Advanced Networking - AKA VLANs Isolation - uses a pool of VLANs and
dynamically assigns them to guest networks as they are provisioned.
CloudStack uses a virtual networking appliance based on Linux to
provide an account-dedicated virtual routing device that provides
services like NAT/Port forwarding LoadBalancing, routing, etc. (the
appliance isn't directly configurable by the user, they have to do all
of it via CloudStack)

* There's also completely flat Layer-2 networking with no isolation.
(Essentially basic networking sans the security groups)

* Direct Netwoking (again horrendous naming IMO) - This is where you
had existing network elements that CloudStack wasn't going to control,
but merely consume from. There's also another extension of this where
CloudStack controls physical networking elements rather than
virtualized devices in an 'advanced network' using devices like
Juniper SRX and F5 BigIP Load Balancers.

* GRE Tunnels via OVS - This was really the first foray into SDN - and
like Security groups, CloudStack is orchestrating the tunnel
creation/definition on each hypervisor host.

* STT Isolation with Nicira NVP - Hugo wrote the Layer 2 Nicira NVP
capabilities and it first appeared in CloudStack 4.0.0. CloudStack 4.1
has Layer 3 support for NVP.

In upcoming versions (4.1 and 4.2) there's already support for:

Using Security Groups within VLANS.

BigSwitch (which IIRC will allow you to use Floodlight as your
controller (I think they said the compatible version of Floodlight
would be released by 4.1), or the proprietary BigSwitch controller.

Midokura Midonet (though I sadly haven't kept up with implementation
details at all here.)

Broadcom Load Balancers (in addition to F5 and NetScaler which are
already supported)

I wrote all of that, but most folks typically go with either Basic or
Advanced depending on the gear on hand and how scalable they need to
make it. Most enterprise shops that I have interacted with use VLANs
for isolation. I tend to think of basic as being simpler to setup and
configure - but that assumes you can wrap your head around Layer3
isolation easily. Of course you can 'mix and match' - Networks types
are set at the zone level - so I've seen folks with multiple zones in
a single datacenter to use different types of networking. I'm glossing
over and simplifying a lot of the choices here, because really it's
about what you need to do, rather than what some arbitrary default is
set as.

look at his patch to utilities.py, it should be easy to fix even in
4.0.1 on your installed system.

Just send an email that contains your question to users@cloudstack.apache.org

Even better, subscribe by send an email to users-subscr...@cloudstack.apache.org

Re: CloudStack with Xen and vShere

 Hi;

I'm evaluating CloudStack, I have a couple of questions I hope someone
 can clarify for me:
Q 1: Is CloudStack compatible with Xen Hypervisor (xen.org)? the
installation manual refers to Citrix XenServer but not Xen as far as I
 could see.

CloudStack uses XAPI to interact with Xen - so technically Xen.org
will work provided you have XAPI in place. In practice this means
XenServer, XCP, or Xen + XAPI on Debian/Ubuntu.

Q 2: to continue using my vSphere hosts do I need to keep vCenter?

Yes - CloudStack interacts with the vCenter API, not directly with
vSphere hosts.

and am unable to add a small (3 machine) test cluster to my zone. I've
tried following the instructions on various sites on the bottom of this email.

 I've copied the vmware-vim.jar, vmware-vim25.jar and vmware-apputils.jar into
 the deps directory.
I run `mvn -Dnonoss -P deps` and get this back in the output [INFO] Apache
CloudStack Plugin - Hypervisor VMware ...… SKIPPED
Running `mvn -P vmware install` and the output has [INFO] Apache CloudStack
Plugin - Hypervisor VMware ...… SUCCESS
I then run `mvn clean install –Dnonoss` and Vmware gets skipped again

I imagine I'm missing something really simple and if someone could point me
the correct direction I'd be very grateful.

 Thanks,
 Josh

Hi Josh:

Did you run this step?
install-non-oss.sh from within the deps directory?
Are you installing all of the nonoss deps?
