Hi :)
I think you do the same thing.  It should also work the same way for Impress
and Draw too.  A lot of things that people try to use Calc for are easier to do
in Base but only if you have some experience with it.  At some point people
that use Calc would be doing themselves a favour by struggling with Base for a
non-urgent task

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Merging with Calc only

I would like to handout worksheets to students with their names already
printed on it.

I have a workbook in Calc with two spreadsheets.  The first spreadsheet is
simply a list of names (NAMES).  The second spreadsheet is a form with, among
other things, a name field (FORM).  I would like to print FORM as many times
as the NAMES field contains, and of course have each form with each individual
name on it.

I have googled this and seen many results but they all refer to using Writer.
Can this be done using just Calc?

Cheers.

Michael

[libreoffice-users] Re: tab behind end margin

2012-12-06 Thread metaphalon
Hi

I don't want to write a note.
It's more like writing a table of content (not really a toc but something
like this), with longer text and a page number left.
A short example what i try to do:

text text text
text text text page

As far as I know, this is possible in MS Word and the Feature List of LO 3.5
(detailed information under [1]) states that this is also possible.

I've tried everything, but now i start to think, that this behaviour is not
working (I use LO 3.5.4).
I wonder if I had misunderstood this feature.

Cheers Sven

When a tab stop is set behind the end margin, the tab uses this value and
does not go to a new line. A compatibility option has been added, thus only
new documents will behave this way.

I am missing this feature for my TOCs since I moved from MSO to OO
several years ago. It allows a clean layout of long line like here:

TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT page
TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT
TEXT TEXT TEXT page

In LO it looks like this:

TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT page
TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT
TEXT TEXTpage

From the new feature list I also would expect this should work in LO
3.5, but I cannot get it to work, too.

Actually, in the tab pane of the paragraph it is possible to set a
tab in the margin area and when entering text, the paragraph mark
jumps to that position, but the line break still occurs before that
tab at the end of the paragraph.

I also tried to use a paragraph with right indent and so set the tab
stop in that area before the page margin (As I remember this is the
way it worked in MSO). Also here, the tab can be set but without
having the desired effect.

Greetings
Karl

Re: [libreoffice-users] Ubuntu Libreoffice

2012-12-06 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think there is some confusion here.

Compile means something specific in OpenSource and is not the same as get
together or acquire.  Compile means taking the raw source code and
installing that onto your system.  It's nice to watch the newly made youTube
video to help with that but this whole process is wy more than most people
will ever need to do.

It's much easier to get the Debian-family installer from

http://www.libreoffice.org/download/
and then these instructions to unzip/unpack it and then install it.

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_LibreOffice_on_Linux
If you want to create your own installer from the source code then i think
that's called something like, doing your own build and hopefully this link
might help
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Native_Build
Again this is wy more than most people will ever need.  Mostly these days
LO is installed by default on most fresh new GnuLinux systems or grab it from
the repos using the package manager.

GnuLinux distro fall neatly into about 6-8 different families.  Many of the
newer ones are in the Debian family including ones such as Mint, Ubuntu.
There's also a Redhat family, Slackware family.  Even different families often
use the same installers so there are only about 4 different installers needed
to cover all the different distros.

You really don't need to create a differrent installer for each different
release of each different distro.  That's the kind of craziness that hardware
manufacturers seem to think in their ignorance = or at least the excuse that
often gets used by people who should know better.

As i understand it the main advantage of compiling the code from scratch is
that it streamlines your version of LO and tailors it to your specific set of
hardware.  So it should run faster and is just more cool when you mention it to
your mates.  Unless you compiled your own version of Ubuntu then you really
don't need to go this route.  Ubuntu is not really designed to be compiled from
scratch.  It's meant to be an easy install where everything magically works
without havign to do much.  There are other distros that are much better for
this sort of thing, such as Arch, Tiny Core, Slackware and they have loads of
help geared towards helping people compile pretty much anything they want.

Tom :)

Are you simply trying to install the latest release of LibreOffice or
are you just interested in compiling it?

dpkg is the debian package manager so no that command doesn't extract

There really is no need to compile it if you are planning on using it

Average walking speed for most people is generally considered to be around
4miles/hour so you are either very fit, or walking downhill a lot.  It is

I cycle to work but then my work-place moved a lot nearer.  On push-bike i can

  Google says:

Hi :)
Errr, Amiko is well worth watching btw.  It's rare to see an interviewer that
manages to get people talking rather than kinda taking over and doing most of
the talking themselves.  She makes it much easier to understand what is going
on by avoiding technical terms and encourages interviewees to keep-it-simple
too by giving them a clue as to what level of understanding to pitch the
interview at.  If you listen to her voice on the What is happening on the
space station today she clearly does know the technical words so it's even
more interesting to see her dodge them when interviewing.  When i first started
watching i assumed she was hopeless until i realised what she was achieving,
getting people to relax and opening up with interesting answers.  Brandi is
pretty good too but has a completely different approach.

try to make things difficult so that you are forced into using Adobe's Pdf

Tom,
Actually, no.  I found it was fairly easy to do in Draw.

One company sent me a Pdf form to fill in and then complained that i
returned it as a Pdf!  It had been a bit ilke a multiple choice in that it
had one question per line but instead of the choices it just left the rest
of the line empty.  I pulled the form into Writer, set it as the background,
added a 2 column table on top and adjusted the row's widths to fit the form
and then wrote on my layer and saved as Pdf.  I was really chuffed because
it's the first time i had managed anything like it with Pdfs but then got a

That was their problem, not yours.  Sounds like they are in the last century.

here is my simple way to help with the typing errors I sometime get.
My fingers seem to love to press the wrong letters.

copy the compressed download file to you home folder, using you file

browser is.

This is the file I use for 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.
LibO_3.6.4_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

Next you right-click on it in you file manager to uncompress it. Use the
default Archive Manager, or Ark, or whatever is your default archiver
manager/un-compressor.

That will create the folder with the long name, At this point I do
something a little different to ease my typing skills. I right-click on
the folder and rename it to LibO to ease my typing its long name in
the Terminal. That way you do not have such a long set of characters to
type in for the folder's name in the Terminal.

In Terminal or Konsole, etc., I type:

cd LibO
cd DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Then do the same steps for the help and language packs, as needed,
except for the cd desktop-integration part.

You do not need to rename the folders, but I do that to stop errors in
my typing of the long name of the folder. I know there are some other
ways of doing this, but for me it is the simplest way for installing LO
on Ubuntu.

The only hard part is removing LO 3.5.7 before I install LO 3.6.4. I
keep forgetting the Terminal commands and need to use the Synaptic
Package Manager to find and remove the LO packages.

Of course, I then make sure I reinstall all of the extensions I want,
just to make sure they are there for me.

Hi :)
Ahhh, tabbed auto-complete is really helpful.

On a unix-based command-line, so that's any GnuLinux just start typing a
command or pathname or file-name and after about 2 or 3 characters press the
tab key.  It then lists all the relevant things that start with those 2 or 3
characters and copies everything you have typed so far onto a new line so that
you can ignore all the suggestions and carry on typing if you want.  If there
is only 1 suggestion then it just fills in all the rest for you.  Errr, i dunno
how to select say the 5th option except by using the mouse to copypaste.  The
keyboard short-cut for paste doesn't work but mouse paste is always good :)

short break of a few empty cells.  If it does i get to the top of the new
start.

If you also press the shift key while doing that it selects all the cells
between the start and where-ever you have ended-up so far.  Just shift and
down-arrow adds one more cell to your selection.  Shift and up-arrow takes the
last cell off.  So, as long as you avoid taking your finger off the shift key
you can rapidly select quite a messy column even if it has tons of breaks in
it.

Tom :)

Hi Graham,

Finally got it after about 3 de/install cycles.

During the installation I have to select English and French, just English
isn't good enough:(.

After that I can select English in the language settings and then the built-in
help is working.

Thanks for getting me going

[libreoffice-users] 3.6.4.3 and Wheezy.

2012-12-06 Thread Sharon Kimble
I've just installed LibreOffice 3.6.4.3 onto Debian Wheezy [aka

This means that there are no menu items for it and so have to be
created using 'alacarte' with the shortcuts going

However, i have not needed to update the Debian LibreOffice yet so I’m
unsure what will happen then. This is more of an update with regard to
the next version of Debian which is currently in testing, and may well
be released as 'stable' in quarter 1 of 2013, but that’s just my
guesstimate.

Thanks

copy the compressed download file to you home folder, using you file

This is the file I use for 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.
   LibO_3.6.4_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

Next you right-click on it in you file manager to uncompress it. Use
the default Archive Manager, or Ark, or whatever is your default
   archiver manager/un-compressor.

That will create the folder with the long name, At this point I do
something a little different to ease my typing skills. I
right-click on the folder and rename it to LibO to ease my typing
its long name in the Terminal. That way you do not have such a long
set of characters to type in for the folder's name in the Terminal.

In Terminal or Konsole, etc., I type:

   cd LibO
   cd DEBS
   sudo dpkg -i *.deb
   cd desktop-integration
   sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Then do the same steps for the help and language packs, as needed,
except for the cd desktop-integration part.

You do not need to rename the folders, but I do that to stop errors
in my typing of the long name of the folder. I know there are
some other ways of doing this, but for me it is the simplest way for
   installing LO on Ubuntu.

The only hard part is removing LO 3.5.7 before I install LO 3.6.4.
I keep forgetting the Terminal commands and need to use the
Synaptic Package Manager to find and remove the LO packages.

Of course, I then make sure I reinstall all of the extensions I
want, just to make sure they are there for me.

Download LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the

The above is the normal situation when LibreOffice is part of a
Debian distribution. There is another thing to consider. The Debian
version of LibreOffice has its own set of bugs that are different from
the bugs that LibreOffice from the LO website may have. Besides, the
Debian versions are always several versions behind those in the LO
website. For example, the Debian stable version due out this spring will
likely be 3.6.x. The website should have 3.6.4 shortly with 3.6.6 due
out in the week of April 8-14, 2013. (They would like to have 4.02 out
about that same time.
I think I had the same problem with Ubuntu (a Debian derivative).
Since with my writing and QA testing I need to use LO from the website,
I have to remove the Ubuntu version completely using Synaptic.
Unfortunately this has to be done every time I go to the newest version
of Ubuntu. Fortunately, that is only once every 2 years. Daily upgrades
from Ubuntu do not bother my versions of LibreOffice.

[libreoffice-users] Re: [MariaDB Announce] New MariaDB releases 5.1.66, 5.2.13, 5.3.11, 5.5.28a are now available

2012-12-06 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Just thought people here might be interested to know of last week's
announcement from MariaDb.  It is a drop-in replacement for MySql so hopefully
any databases you have created in MySql should be easily opened by MariaDb.  I
would still do a back-up though in order to ensure Murphy's Law plays in your
favour.  (ie if you have taken the trouble to do a back-up you wont need it and
will probably feel like it was a waste of time.)

MariaDb and MySql are fairly hefty good back-ends that are even more useful
when using Base as the front-end.  Other good back-ends include Postgresql
which might actually be slightly better at integrating with Base as they helped
us a bit with some sort of connector or something apparently.  These are all
great if you have tons of data but possibly a bit more than you need for a
small and simple address list of just a few hundred (or so) people.

Tom :)

out there for it when compared to other distros. I'm only having some
compatibility issues with it at the moment (My android phone is not
being detected even though I have done so much config for it lol)

This is how I update to each new version of the Document Foundation
version of Libre Office. This is for the 64 bit version, but simply
substitute the 32 bit version for the 64 bit. This is for the latest
3.6.4.3 release:

   Download LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the
desktop. Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will
give you the folder LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US Run
the following terminal commands to install it: 1. sudo apt-get remove
   libreoffice*.* 2. sudo dpkg -i
   ~/Desktop/LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb 3.
   sudo dpkg -i
   ~/Desktop/LibO_3.6.4.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.6-debian-menus_3.6.4-3_all.deb

A shorter option is as follows:
  1 Download the appropriate file(s)
  2 tar zxvf ./wherever you downloaded to/downloaded '.tar./gz'
  file
  3 sudo dpkg -iR ./as above/extracted installation
  directory/DEBS

The 'R' option, as suggested by it's character, invokes a recursive
operation on all .deb files in all sub-directories, thus avoiding the
redundant operation on the desktop integration stuff.

[libreoffice-users] New Zealand English Dictionary Submission

2012-12-06 Thread Anthony Easthope
Hi guys

Forgive me if this is on the wrong list but I have come up with a idea
which I think I'm capable of.

What I want to do was make a New Zealand English
dictionary extension but I was unsure how to go about this.

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start apart from using a
existing British English word-list as a starting point.

Some assistance would be greatly received as well!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Merging with Calc only

2012-12-06 Thread Dr. R. O Stapf

Michael,
Even if it can be done with Calc、the question, which came to my mind was, why to make a worksheet
for students in Calc? Why not in Writer, Draw, or Impress?

I would like to handout worksheets to students with their names already printed
on it.

I have a workbook in Calc with two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet is
simply a list of names (NAMES). The second spreadsheet is a form with, among
other things, a name field (FORM). I would like to print FORM as many times as
the NAMES field contains, and of course have each form with each individual
name on it.

I have googled this and seen many results but they all refer to using Writer.
Can this be done using just Calc?

Cheers.

Michael

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [3.5.3.2/Writer] Split screen in half horizontally?

2012-12-06 Thread Dr. R. O Stapf
This would realy be a good feature. I also miss the possibility to compare to documents side by side
and synchronized scrolling. I hate to say it but this is a good feature of MSO. Just hope that our
devs can add ti to LibO.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [3.5.3.2/Writer] Split screen in half horizontally?

2012-12-06 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Side-by-side is fairly easy on Win7 and Ubuntu 12.04.  Not sure about others
but it's got to have originated somewhere and is probably on the cards
elsewhere.  Not sure about synchronised scrolling though, that part sounds like
a good item for a feature-request / bug-report.

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Bug_Report

So, in Ubuntu 12.04 and Win7 just grab the first document's window and drag it
to the far left as though you are dragging it off-screen.  When a weird shadow
fills half the screen let go.  Whatever size and shape the windo had been it
now fills half the screen.  Do the same to the 2nd document's window but drag
it to the right.  Errr i choose left first just because it feels more
comfortable to me.  If you try to drag it off the top of the screen then the
window tries to maximise.

Of course you could use Alt Tab to flick between any windows on the workspace
you are on and that can be a good way to compare quickly.

Most GnuLinux distros also let you flick between different work-spaces quickly
so changes jump out at you that way too.  Windows users probably aren't
familiar with the spinning cube (which i can never get to work).  Of course
Ubuntu kinda lost that quick flick between workspaces in 11.04 using Unity
(unless i'm missing a key-combo (which is highly likely))

Tom :)

Hi :)
Existing resources are probably better than reinventing the wheel, even if it
costs a little it might be a better way to a faster answer.  I quite liked
these though and didn't instantly spot the price and copyright

http://www.chemistry.co.nz/kiwi.htm
http://www.taiuru.maori.nz/predictive-txt-maori-word-list-for-nz-mobile-phones/

Not sure at all about this one, is there even a list there?

Tim might be interested and might be able to give pointers.
Good luck and regards from

yes there is. but not to quell the author of it is actually lacking alot
of words and place names. I was hoping to make a more up to date version
of the former.
