Re: [libreoffice-users] Column/Row highlighting
We have used a release based numbering scheme until 2023, and we have moved to a calendar based numbering scheme starting from 2024. LibreOffice 7.6.7 is the last release of the LibreOffice 7.6 family, the last based on the old numbering scheme. LibreOffice 24.2.3 is the third release of the LibreOffice 24.2 family, the first based on the new numbering scheme. Re: [libreoffice-users] Viewing odg documents
Unfortunately, Windows 10 can cause such problems by simply losing the association between a non-Microsoft application such as LibreOffice and its files (which are stored in the Documents folder). Please try the following solution: (1) right-click on any LibreOffice file, (2) select Open with, (3) left-click on Select other application, (4) click on the LibreOffice (Writer, Calc, Impress) icon, (5) check Always use the selected application to open the file, (6) and press OK. If this doesn't solve the problem, then Windows 10 has messed up the association in the Windows registry, and the solution is not trivial at all, as the Windows registry should be managed by someone who is expert in this area to avoid screwing up the entire Windows 10 installation. In this case, the best option is to uninstall and reinstall LibreOffice from scratch, as this process may reset file associations. Re: [libreoffice-users] LO pptx-file cannot be opened in MS-Office
The scary message from Microsoft 365 is shown independently from the quality of the PPTX, as soon as the software realizes that the file has not been produced by Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office. Please do mind that Microsoft 365 is not as flexible as Microsoft Office (desktop) when handling documents not produced by Microsoft 365 (this of course is done on purpose to lock in users). The quality of the PPTX is way worse than the average quality of PPTX, which is already poor, and this may be a reason for the issue. To change server, you should click on the INFO link just below the yellow DOWNLOAD button, and select one from the list that you find in the page which opens after you click on the INFO link. You should also check that the download link starts with HTTPS, as otherwise the browser will not download the file. If this is not the case, please change the server based on the instructions from the previous paragraph. Please note that you can retry the download as many times as you want provided that you do not close the browser window before the download has completed. You can ignore the donation request, as donations are optional and help us to keep the project alive. If everything works properly, when the download has finished a window will open asking you to choose between executing the installer or saving the file on your hard disk. Please choose the second option, and save the file inside your DOWNLOADS folder. Then open the DOWNLOADS folder, and double click on the file (the name starts with LibreOffice, and ends with .MSI on Windows and with .DMG on macOS). Carefully follow the instructions on the screen until the end of the installation process. If everything works properly, LibreOffice will be installed properly and will show up in your menu (for Windows) or in your Applications folder (for macOS). Sorry for the long message. Drag and drop works, but is not as accurate as insert. I have never used drag and drop with Impress once I have realized the advantages of using insert. If I do an insert, and ask for the video to be linked, I again get the poor fade-in behaviour - the dummy placeholder shows (behind the text) as the slide fades in and is replaced by the playing video (on top of the text) when fade-in is complete. Doesn't seem affected by switching between nv and nouveau graphics drivers. I've no idea yet where the z ordering is saved. In all cases the video plays in front of everything else. Might this be a video hardware limitation of some sort? I will check. I can sed the video back, and have the text on top of it, maybe is just the configuration of the text animation (as the text to be on top of the video has to be managed with an animation). -- Italo Vignoli - it...@vignoli.org mobile/signal +39.348.5653829 GPG Key ID - 0xAAB8D5C0 DB75 1534 3FD0 EA5F 56B5 FDA6 DE82 934C AAB8 D5C0 -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

Using the process I have described, the video can be sent to back as any other object, and you can superimpose the text. Also, no icon shows at the start of the video. Done in over 200 presentations during the last 10 years. On 5/13/21 9:48 AM, Mike Scott wrote: (resent) Thank you for your reply. However, the issue is not that I cannot insert a video into a slide. The problems are (a) that the inserted video is always "on top" of other objects, whereas I want text superimposed over the video, and (b) the annoying icon that always seems to show at the start of the video (and sometimes at the end). My possible workaround is to use OBS Studio instead, which has other issues but at least gives an easy option to have changing text superimposed onto a video without artifacts. Hi Stephen, On 4/14/21 3:20 PM, STEPHEN COLEMAN wrote: Fault Module Name: ucrtbase.DLL The issue is related to ucrtbase.dll, which is a Windows module. The gift_aid_schedule_libre_.ods file, which is easy to download from the UK Gov website, opens without any issue if that module is not faulty (I have just checked with Linux, macOS and Windows). First, you should check if you LibreOffice installation conflicts with the faulty module by launching LibreOffice (double click on the program icon), without opening any file. If the software crashes, then there is a conflict, if the software opens, then there is a file specific conflict. While you have to investigate with a Windows expert why your module is faulty, you can try one of the following workarounds: 1. Download the Excel version of the same file, which is available from the same page, and try to open it with LibreOffice (which is fully compatible with MS Office files). 2. Install the portable version of LibreOffice from the following page: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/portable-versions/. That version is not accessing system resources, so it should opeen the file without issues. 3. Uninstall LibreOffice 7.1.2 and reinstall LibreOffice 7.0.5 (the fourth digit is the release candidate version, so is not significant). I hope one of these workaround works. Re: [libreoffice-users] Changes in LO 7.0.3 affecting embedded images and objects?
If the file has been saved as ODS, this is strange (although there are minimal chances that the file is broken, but in any case it will be easy to recover the images as they are stored inside the zipped file). If the file has been saved as XLSX, then anything might have happened, as the format is not reliable at all. Of course, there might be a regression in the package provided by Mageia but you can easily check if this is the case by downloading the AppImage LibreOffice package - which runs on any Linux distro - to open the file. LibreOffice AppImages are here: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/appimage/. Best regards. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: question
If you are using the LibreOffice version from the Ubuntu repository, please remember that it is not the official vanilla version from TDF but is repackaged by Canonical (and as such may include bugs not present in the official version from The Document Foundation). LibreOffice included with Ubuntu 16.04 is very old (four years, for a product updated every six months, are a geological era), and features of Calc have been improved on a regular basis. We are now at 6.4.5, and in a week we will announce 7.0. Re: [libreoffice-users] OO replace file names when salve as or export a file
So, you are a power user on Debian, and you have the RC1 of the next LibreOffice version installed (LibreOffice 6.4.4 will be released tomorrow). Your Help system, though, is still LibreOffice 6.4.2, but I don't think this might be the source of the problem. LibreOffice 6.4.4 RC2 behaves OK on Linux Mint, and provides the name of the open file which the user wants to rename, and not the name of the first file in the folder. Actually, the behaviour should not change between system and LibreOffice dialogs, so if this happens the culprit might be the user profile. Try to rename it adding -old to the name, to force the creation of a new user profile. The software name is LibreOffice. Please avoid using any kind of reference to OpenOffice. To provide a sensible answer, we should know which operating system (including the version) and which version of LibreOffice you are using. With the last version of LibreOffice on Linux Mint, the behaviour is correct, so it is impossible to reproduce the problem. Best regards. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Draw changes font when opening pdf text file.
If the original PDF has been generated by a software which does not provide the option of embedding fonts (as requested from the standard format), or the user has not activated font embedding, there is not a solution, and the issue is not LibreOffice but the PDF which has not been generated properly. You have probably added a page background. You should check the menu Format > Page > Area, and verify that it is set to None. Also, if you are using one of Microsoft file formats to save the document, please switch to the LibreOffice ODT native file format and use the Microsoft DOC/DOCX file format only when you have to share the file with other users (the Microsoft file format is less robust and more malware prone than the LibreOffice ISO standard file format). Re: [libreoffice-users] [Copying slides from one presentation to another]
With the latest versions of LibreOffice you have two different options for inserting slides from one presentation into another one, both tested and working on every platform. A. You can open two different LibreOffice presentations at the same time, and switch between them using the Window menu. When you have two presentations open you can copy and paste slides between them from the Slide Sorter view: 1. Select multiple slides with the mouse while keeping the Ctrl key pressed 2. Copying them by selecting Edit > Copy or by hitting Crtr+C 3. Switch to the other presentation from Window > Presentation Name 4. Past the slides after the selected slide from Edit > Paste or by hitting Ctrl+V B. You can insert multiple slides from another presentation into the open presentation from Slide > Insert Slide from File... 1. Search and open the source presentation 2. Select any number of slides or the entire presentation 3. Click OK and wait for the process to complete I have just copied/pasted according to option A and inserted according to option B 60 slides of an 82 slide presentation into another 142 slide presentation without any issue. Although I don't see the need of reverting to an old LibreOffice version to do the same thing in a different way, you can find old LibreOffice releases here: https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ On 12/04/2018 21:29, anne-ology wrote: >yes, & thank you for expressing what obviously I was unable to so do. > >There's also a problem with their copy & paste suggestion, since > that surely requires having more than one copy of LO open at one time, > which seems impossible since when I click on LO again, the opened one > appears rather than a new version. > >And when I've gone to the LO archives to attempt to download the > previous versions, it merely sends me back to the download page to download > the newest version. > > PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW to download a previous version, if the latest > versions will no longer have this option available. -- Italo Vignoli - Marketing & PR email italo.vign...@documentfoundation.org mobile/signal +39.348.5653829 - skype italovignoli hangout/jabber italo.vign...@gmail.com The Document Foundation, Kurfürstendamm 188, 10707 Berlin, DE Gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts Legal details: http://www.documentfoundation.org/imprint GPG Key ID - 0xAAB8D5C0 DB75 1534 3FD0 EA5F 56B5 FDA6 DE82 934C AAB8 D5C0 -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

So, any "radical" deprecation of features should be evaluated not only in technical terms, but also in marketing/communication terms. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LO for Android - is there more than a Viewer available? Beta maybe?
LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice - plus NeoOffice and probably some other office suite - have been forked out of OpenOffice.org at different times. The LGPL source code has ended it's life in June 2011, when the move to Apache Foundation inspired by IBM has deliberately changed the license from copyleft to permissive and replaced all copyleft code with permissive code, with a more substancial amount of changes than the LibreOffice fork. On this tiny mailing list there are too many reports about faulty OOXML export. LibreOffice exports OOXML for interoperability purposes, to serve users (who are not knowledgeable about file formats). It does not export OOXML to store data, and warns users about the risks of using the format for storage purposes. Unfortunately, although OOXML is a broken file format it is also an ISO standard, and for enterprise level adoptions you must offer it to be compliant with migration requisites. This is one thing where Apache OpenOffice does it right. That program does not export OOXML. It tries to read OOXML while always exporting the old but very well supported Microsoft documents which is just fine for all users of Microsoft Office. Legacy Microsoft formats have the same problems of OOXML, and they are supported exactly in the same way. LibreOffice supports them as well as OOXML, and users have the option of choosing the one they prefer. Bringing Apache OpenOffice - a software without developers affected by a serious security bug (which has not been solved, even if the software is still distributed, for lack of developers) - as an example of proper behaviour is just hilarious (because, if the developers were there, the feature would have been enabled as well, and you should know, because of some old discussions on the AOO mailing list). Re: [libreoffice-users] security warning AOO
LibreOffice 4.3.7, released yesterday, and LibreOffice 4.4.2, available since early April, include a patch for the issue, and therefore offer a real solution to the problem (and not a workaround). Severity: Important Vendor: The Apache Software Foundation Versions Affected: All Apache OpenOffice versions 4.1.1 and older are affected. Mitigation: Apache OpenOffice users are advised to remove the problematic library in the program folder of their OpenOffice installation. On Windows it is named hwp.dll, on Mac it is named libhwp.dylib and on Linux it is named libhwp.so. Alternatively the library can be renamed to anything else e.g. hwp_renamed.dll. This mitigation will drop AOO's support for documents created in Hangul Word Processor versions from 1997 or older. Users of such documents are advised to convert their documents to other document formats such as OpenDocument before doing so. Microsoft introduced OOXML (DOCX, XLSX and PPTX) in 2007, in a hurry, because the State of Massachusetts opted for ODF (the file format of LibreOffice). The State IT Manager, responsible of the decision, was fired based on false allegations published by the Boston Globe, and provided by... I think that either opinion is right, because it is based on each one needs and experiences. I have never lost any information, and although I am a heavy Impress user I have never lost any image in any file (even while switching from MacOS X to Linux and vice versa). I mention this, because it is a real problem for many users. This represents my experience, and is worth as much as my experience can be considered a good one or a bad one. I think that free software should teach users to be more self conscious about their skills, and decide which is the best version for their needs. I second Charles' opinion about a larger number of users choosing the latest release (fresh) over the older one (still). Of course, these are not scientific statistics, but individual perceptions. In some cases I have suggested the older release, and I am definitely suggesting the older release to enterprises. Ultimately it is a choice between Fresh, which has newer features but also a higher chance of bugs, and Still, which has fewer features but likely also fewer bugs. In some cases you need a feature and do not stumble into a bug because of your workflow, and Fresh is the ideal choice. In some cases, you do stumble into a bug because of your workflow and Still is the right choice. There is only one version of the ODF standard, so we do not need to use strict. How can font-embed occur if affected by licence restrictions on a font (e.g. font x is licenced to be used only on gpl systems)? LibreOffice is only using fonts with a free license (mostly SIL) which can be distributed freely to any kind of operating system. There is not a single font that can be used only with GPL licensed operating systems or applications. So how are non-standard elements treated when ignored? It seems safer to select either odf 10/11 or 12strict. Is there a definitive list of these LO 12extended features so that users can decide if it beneficial to use them, or revert to standard odf? Nothing happens when XML tags are ignored, to systems which are not supporting the ODF 1.2 Extended document format. This is the reason why we can suggest to use ODF 1.2 Extended as the preferred format, because backward compatibility is maintained. Somewhere in the wiki there is a list of the extended features, but please remember that we are speaking of a document format and not of software features. When you talk about standards document formats you never consider software features, because the two are not related. You should really have a look at some of the OASIS ODF TC meeting minutes to understand what the standard is about. Agree, it means that if a user is concerned about compatibility, they must understand to disable the default settings in LO. No, if a user is concerned about interoperability - as I am - he should use the ODF 1.2 Extended document format, because this is the format with the best standard compatibility. How does OO compare; are documents created to the odf standard by default? Same as LibreOffice. Actually, the extended format strategy was started by OOo when OOo 2.0 was launched back in 2005, and has been maintained so far. [libreoffice-users] Clarification about ODF Extended
ODF as implemented by OpenOffice and then LibreOffice has always been the extended version, and not the strict standard version, although it has always been possible to choose the latter. ODF become a standard in 2006, based on OOo 2.0 (2005) file format, but OOo was already shipping some additional features which have been integrated in ODF 1.2 (consolidated in 2008, and standardized in 2011). Today, LibreOffice integrates some additional features in ODF 1.2, which will hopefully become part of ODF 1.3 (like font embedding). In general, saving as ODF 1.2 Extended does not create problem to users of other ODF compatible software, as the format is backward compatible (so font embedding will not create problems, but will not be recognized by other software). This is the reason why LibreOffice suggests ODF 1.2 Extended, and not the ODF 1.2 strict version. Being the format XML based, the tags will not be recognized if they belong to ODF 1.2, but this will not create problems to the document. -- Italo Vignoli - italo.vign...@gmail.com mob IT +39.348.5653829 - mob EU +39.392.7481795 sip it...@libreoffice.org - skype italovignoli GPG Key ID - 0xAAB8D5C0 DB75 1534 3FD0 EA5F 56B5 FDA6 DE82 934C AAB8 D5C0 -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

ODF has a clear path forward, and is actively maintained by OASIS. There is an ODF 1.0 which is an ISO standard, and an ODF 1.2 which is in the process of becoming an ISO standard (backward compatible with ODF 1.0). Standard definitions, by their own nature, are moving slowly. This is the reason why LibreOffice is compatible with both ODF 1.0 and ODF 1.2. Microsoft OOXML, on the other hand, has never been implemented according to the standard ISO definition, and is not even actively maintained by ECMA (because ECMA is not focused on document standards as much as OASIS is). Unfortunately, in the market there are more OOXML documents than ODF documents, but this does not make OOXML format a standard. LibreOffice makes every possible effort to be interoperable with all Microsoft Office proprietary document formats, because this is what users are asking (so, the answer to the original question is YES). On the other hand, Microsoft makes every possible effort to make OOXML not interoperable, which means that maintaining compatibility is like trying to shoot a pheasant while driving a motorbike on a rough path with the eyes shut. -- Italo Vignoli - italo.vign...@gmail.com mob IT +39.348.5653829 - mob EU +39.392.7481795 sip it...@libreoffice.org - skype italovignoli GPG Key ID - 0xAAB8D5C0 DB75 1534 3FD0 EA5F 56B5 FDA6 DE82 934C AAB8 D5C0 -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
