I can't find much helpful information on the web site, so I don't know
how / under which circumstances it would get text from any application.

But it offers reading the clipboard, so at least that also should work
when copying text from OOo into clipboard.

I use Linux, not Windows, so I am not able to install and test. Any

integrate with OOo and it is simply a question on how to trigger the
 product from OOo.

Saskia, OpenOffice.org is not really designed to open either of those

In general, yes, in that they're both office suites. OpenOffice.org
can work very well with MS Office documents, as well as ODF. However,
there may be some issues, if you're doing more advanced stuff.
You know, I haven't installed Micro$oft Office on a machine I own or
work on since 1994 when I found StarOffice originally created by a 16
year old German kid. I've used it ever since. Under OS/2, Windoze, and
LInux, then migrated to OpenOffice as it evolved.
NO ONE KNOWS. They all think I' have office. I only had a brief issue
when office '07 came out with that abysmal .???x file format until
someone created an extension and a conversion program that allowed me to
handle them.
I'm the go to guy to get things done with word processing and
spreadsheets, and everyone asks why they can't do what I can.
But when I tell them I use OpenOffice and they should also, I get the
deer in the headlights look, as though their head will explode if they
fail to follow father Gates and his devil spawn.
oh well, they'll learn

First you do not require Windows to use OOo. Second, OOo is not a 100%
replacement for Office, XP or other wise. If you really want to get
away from Microsoft, you will need to find a replacement Operating
system. You will need some basic understanding of how computers work
and the functions of operating systems. To learn more try finding a
local computer group to help get you started. If that does not work do
a search in your favorite search engine for computer operating systems
, and be ready to learn a lot in a short time.

What we need to know, is which version of Mac OS X do you have? I'm
sure, there is somewhere an about information, that tells you that
you run Mac OS X 10.6.4 or something similar.

Second, which version of OOo did you download? If you don't know this,
can you give us the website, where you've downloaded the software?

Third, as far as I know, if you have both a recent version of OOo and
of OS X, then you don't need to install X11, since OOo can run
natively on OS X.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please answer the above questions, so that we can help you further.
And please reply to the list only. Thanks.

You don't need Windows XP to operate OOo. But you do need some kind of
operating system for your computer.

If you're willing to try something new, I would suggest, that you try
Mandriva Linux or Ubuntu Linux, which are both very easy to install
and use. If you are unsure, you can install Linux in parallel to your
Windows installation. So when you start your computer, you can choose
which system to start.

Yes, OpenOffice.org is a free alternative to MS Office. It contains a
writing component (writer), spreadsheet (calc), presentation
(impress), drawing (draw) and a database (base, can act as a frontend
to different database systems like MySQL or can use the built in
database engine HSQLDB). OOo can handle the file formats that are used
by MS Office, so you won't loose anything.

One thing Sigrid forgot was that there is no equivalent to Outlook in Open

an add-in which handles the diary function of Outlook. I second Sigrid's
suggestion that you try a linux installation. I have for many years used

Don, there really isn't any connection between being on the user list and downloading the software.
It isn't like those systems where until you sign up, you just get a trial version -- what you
apparently downloaded before is already the full suite, and there's nothing like a key or login or
anything like that required. What subscribing to this list accomplished was to make it easier for
you to get help -- and when you're comfortable with OOo, to give it!

No, it is impossible to use any program as a replacement for MS Office
and there is no program named open office.
You may install OpenOffice.org or any derivate (e.g. LibreOffice,
BrOffice, go-oo.org) in order to use an _alternative_ rather than
replacement. The main advantage would be that all these programs produce
standardized office files (Open Document Format and PDF).

Of course you can keep MS Office as an additional software on your disk.
