Re: [users] Using Read Please with OOo
Hi Andrew, I can't find much helpful information on the web site, so I don't know how / under which circumstances it would get text from any application. But it offers reading the clipboard, so at least that also should work when copying text from OOo into clipboard. Malte. Andrew Douglas Pitonyak wrote, On 10/23/10 06:40: ReadPlease is used by people with vision problems. http://www.readplease.com/ A user mentioned that they installed this and it initially worked fine, but, after a restart, they are uncertain how to trigger it in OOo version 3.1 on Windows XP. I use Linux, not Windows, so I am not able to install and test. Any windows users familiar with this product? My guess is that it does not integrate with OOo and it is simply a question on how to trigger the product from OOo. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

You know, I haven't installed Micro$oft Office on a machine I own or work on since 1994 when I found StarOffice originally created by a 16 year old German kid. I've used it ever since. When I try to open it, the icon springs to life on the dock, the icon for what I presume is X11 appears -- and then OpenOffice closes down, and icon vanishes. Please help me. Thanking you kindly. willem kolver Trauma Society of SA Cape Town RSA First you do not require Windows to use OOo. Second, OOo is not a 100% replacement for Office, XP or other wise. If you really want to get away from Microsoft, you will need to find a replacement Operating system. You will need some basic understanding of how computers work and the functions of operating systems. To learn more try finding a local computer group to help get you started. If that does not work do a search in your favorite search engine for computer operating systems , and be ready to learn a lot in a short time. Second, which version of OOo did you download? If you don't know this, can you give us the website, where you've downloaded the software? Third, as far as I know, if you have both a recent version of OOo and of OS X, then you don't need to install X11, since OOo can run natively on OS X. Thanks in advance for your help. Btw, my parents (both 72 years old) learned in the last two or three years to use a computer. ;) Do I need Windows XP (which I presently use with Offixe XP) to operate OO? You don't need Windows XP to operate OOo. But you do need some kind of operating system for your computer. If you're willing to try something new, I would suggest, that you try Mandriva Linux or Ubuntu Linux, which are both very easy to install and use. If you are unsure, you can install Linux in parallel to your Windows installation. So when you start your computer, you can choose which system to start. Is OO just a alternative to MS Office? Yes, OpenOffice.org is a free alternative to MS Office. Most people use Thunderbird for their email and contacts, coupled with an add-in which handles the diary function of Outlook. I second Sigrid's suggestion that you try a linux installation. I have for many years used Ubuntu, which is at least as easy to install as Windows. It isn't like those systems where until you sign up, you just get a trial version -- what you apparently downloaded before is already the full suite, and there's nothing like a key or login or anything like that required.
