Hi all,

I installed ovirt engine 3.4 beta with two VMs - one opensuse 13.1
with ovirt-guest-agent from [1] and another fedora 19 with oga from
fedora. Both of them seem to work well - I can see installed
applications,
logged in user, memory usage. But in both of them, under "Network
Interfaces",
the "Guest Agent Data" tab on the right has just headers, with no
data.

'vdsClient -s 0 getAllVmStats' on the host does show such data
correctly

for both VMs.

Am I missing anything? Is it a bug, or I should do something to
get there

data from the agent (through vdsm)?

I'm guessing that you're missing ethtool and/or python-ethtool? (sorry
can't find the right name right now)

Both have python-ethtool, which is a dependency of the guest agent.
And vdsm does report correctly - I am pretty certain it's a problem
in the

engine and not on the host/VMs.

Thanks anyway,

Found https://bugzilla.redhat.com/907781, and following comment 7 there,
restarted the browser (logout/login was not enough) and now it's ok.

why would that be an ok behavior?
That behaviour is of course not ok, however it helped didi to verify the
ubuntu guest agent.

Sorry this is a bit misleading. SLES SP3 was attempted but I still have

The repository for it is here:

Why is the Windows VMs always lost their activation against Microsoft
after that I have upgrade ovirt?
Is there så big changes in hardware drivers etc that it will hit the
activation mechanism?

I think there should be a way to preserve the activation even after an
upgrade.

I think you should complain about this to the OS vendor :-)
It simply means that the `Hardware` changed and I don't think that this
should happen, for larger setups that's a pretty big problem, if you
suddenly have to re-activate thousands of VM's due to the upgrade.

I can surely test the agent and I can try give it a go to package

Ok my bad, I just asked a colleague and he told me that SPICE is not

Sorry for the confusion.

So it's correct that you can only have VNC or RDP.

& FQDN for our SLES 11 guests (no guest agent yet). I tried to understand
what I must write into the serial device but there is no change in the VM
overview panel. Different combinations did not provide any success.

Maybe someone can send the syntax for the two required echo commands.

For populating those two columns just use an init script inside the VM that
echoes the following data into the serial console. A sample for a host with two
IPs and name host.test.com:

echo '{"__name__": "network-interfaces", "interfaces": [{"name": "en1", "inet": "1.2.3.4"}, {"name":
"en2", "inet": "9.10.11.12"}]}' > /dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm
echo '{"__name__": "fqdn", "fqdn": "host.test.com"}' >
/dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm

Yes, this indeed would work.

Hello,

from my understanding it should be possible to provide an absolute

basic info into the virto serial device within the guest VM. At least from
what I can read in the source at github or the docs:

https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-guest-agent/tree/master/ovirt-guest-agent

what's the gap in SLES from the OpenSUSE one that does work iiuc?

My problem is, that generating a working agent on SLES 11 is more than just a
make command. I drove into several errors (especially path specific)
Yes, this is one of the things which had to be fixed for SLES. If it
would be only running a make command on SLES we would have already
provided the guest agent.

  so I asked
about its state in february and the negative answer was: "... SLES was attempted
...".
More see here:

http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-February/021503.html

So I reduced my requirements and searched a way to populate the columns
IP and hostname in OVirt. This should be not more than doing an "echo ..."
into the serial port.

Hi Rene,Sven, ea,

How did you get it to actually work? I got the deb from
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/zhshzhou/vdsm-ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/o/ovirt-guest-agent/ovirt-guest-agent_1.0.9.20140216.git5168c4-1ppa1_all.deb)
, since I'm not willing to add ubuntu sources to my apt-configuration
since that might make me run into dependency troubles later on.
They used, AFAIK, the previous one which did not depend on the
qemu-guest-agent

After downloading and dpkg -i'ing it, I ran an apt-get -f install in
order to get the dependencies. Then I reran dpkg:

There's a configfile regarding initscripts in /etc/init, but no such
thing on the sste, (I just had a look at the contents of the ubuntu
package too).
How did you resolve this? Creating my own initscript isn't that hard but
it sucks when it comes to having a maintainable setup...

Hi,

I see now that you have reported that you're using RHEL 5.5
unfortunately I have to tell you that the absolute minimum supported
RHEL5 is RHEL 5.6 which comes with the kernel 2.6.18-238 version which
includes the required virtio drivers.

Any prior RHEL5 kernel version won't work.

Ahm, is 5.11 > 5.5? Or am I missing something?
I guess you misunderstand the fact that he wanted to know if he can just

And yes 5.11 > 5.5

The guest tools are installed using the ovirt-guest-tools-3.5_5.iso.

Anyone got the same issue? What is causing this? Seems like a bug to me.
Yes it does indeed seem to be a bug, and from how this sounds like, I
would suspect the windows ballooning driver.

And when I check the rpm I see:

rpm -qa|grep ovirt

Well the latest guest agent is always available on epel for el5/6/7
and for fedora in the fedora repos I am not sure why it's not
available in the public ovirt repositories, however that was somehow
always a problem with ovirt releases, but I recommend anyway to use
epel for the ovirt guest agent due to the fact that I am releasing
the guest agent always to epel and it will get updated from there.

Please also note that the repo location has changed. ovirt-3.5 for
el6 is now here: http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5/rpm/el6/

However what I don't know, is how the 3.3.3 repository got installed
for you, I am not sure that this was done by the bare 'cloud-init',
that might be specific to your cloud init configuration.

Well that can't be specific. I completely wipe the test environment
every couple weeks and just provisioned a completely fresh ovirt
3.5.2rc3 install.

Normally I don't use cloud-init as we have foreman, but I was testing
it. The only thing I did was, create new VM and checked the
cloud-init/sysprep checkbox. The rest oVirt did automatically.

What I think is happening is that the CentOS 6.5 image in the
ovirt-image-repository glance provider is outdated. I used this as
template for quick testing.

Does anyone know who maintains these images?

Sandro, do you by any chance know who does?

You don't add an user this way. You add the domain. You have to pass the
domain admin user and the domain admin password.
Then you can use the domain within the engine. e.g. search users, add
access rights for vms etc.
Even login to the engine and assigning rights within the engine you can
handle from the engine itself.

Can someone help me with the correct parameters?

Alternatively, is there a way, I can import the VMs disks? I still
know how the data center and clusters were set up and the specs
for the VMs are also documented, so I'd like to re-attach the
disks, which would save me some time compared to the re-installs.

is this an iscsi or nfs data storage domain?

while hacky, i wonder if worth wiki-fying.

Well it would not hurt to have it in the wiki marking it as a 'hack'
This is something what could happen because of some bug in the engine
and you'll need to recover.
Another thing I am wondering about is, if we should not provide a
recovery tool for something like this.
It sounds pretty much like something what can be supported for backing
up VMs for example.

Re: [Users] guest agent

2012-12-13 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

hi,

I am currently in the process of preparing the ovirt-guest-agent for F17
package review, so it can be included in the distribution.

In the meantime you can use the repository as mentioned by Jason.

The qemu-guest-agent is not the same thing. The qemu guest agent comes
with just a little of the features the ovirt-guest-agent currently
provides, even though they are duplicating features, such as hibernation
(S3,S4) support and things like shutdown initiated by the OS through the
respective guest agent.

The ovirt-guest-agent is providing also additional information to the
web admin portal, such as current IP, logged in user, memory consumption
etc.
Also it provides the ability to implement a feature called 'Single Sign
On' so that you can enter your user/password combination only once in
the user portal login and once you have opened the guest os spice
session you get automatically logged in to the guest system.

Re: [Users] node loses contact with rhev agent

2013-01-16 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

Hi,

Great to hear that you solved the issue. As a suggestion for next time:

Execute: service vdsmd restart on the node. You'll not loose your
running VMs and it will work afterwards.
I think I managed to pinpoint the issue, however we're still trying to
verify the patch I have implemented as a proposal for it.

I noticed that logs won't help me that much on that issue as this is
some condition where the connection between host and guest times out due
to the server being busy or something. I am not 100%ly certain about the
cause, however the solution will be to reissue connects on time outs.

Because it is not the ovirt-guest-agent, this package is for spice which
also has a guest agent.

We're currently not providing builds for the guest agent on windows.

Probably this should be changed ;-)
I will try to update the documentation of the guest agent over time.
Currently my efforts rather go in the direction of making the guest

Would you be kind to find the time to help us here? Clearly,
the commit
on top of c343e1833f7b6e5428dd90f14f7807dca1baa0b4 introduces
nasty

However I do not see how it can be related to the problem at hand.

Would you at least try out the ovirt-3.2 branch (where the
infamous
"zombie reaper" commit is reverted)?

Do you have the virtio-serial drivers installed?
If not please do so.
Otherwise you might try to restart vdsmd on the host.

WHat do you mean with

I configured OS as Windows 7 from the beginning.
I set spice as protocol in console section, in fact from the beginning
I was able to connect via spice
I don't see any other settings related to wan optiization in
create/edit part of the VM
The WAN option should be then visible in the UI in the user portal. Not
in the configuration of the VM.
The option for the Operating System must be set where I have shown it in
the screenshot attached.

Since the shutdown command is called with time parameter the VM sets the

not cleared and when it comes back up only root can login until the
/etc/nologin file is cleared.

hmmm, Vinzenz - should guest agent clear that on guest startup, if guest agent
set this at shutdown?

It's not guest agent, "shutdown" does it. It behaves the same on real hw

Is their some some reason the shutdown time is set to 30 seconds

setting this to 0?

Vinzenz - if we are rounding up - is this a bug?

possibly yes

Sounds pretty much like a bug to me

Is this the right way to change it to 0?
psql engine postgres -c "update vdc_options set option_value = '0' where
option_name = 'VmGracefulShutdownTimeout';"

notmally the grace period is there for other users to react befor shutdown starts. I
wonder if it's that much relevant here.., if we assume single user most of the time 0

Server 2k8 as a workstation OS as the licensing seems to be more
reasonable for vdi.

Ah, OK. Then it would be reasonable to add server systems as supported
to driver metadata. Alon?

If the current driver works then hopefully it's just an ini file change. Can
anyone open a bug for this please? (maybe there is one already, no idea..)
The Kernel of Win7 x64 and Win2k8 R2 x64 are supposed to be the same,
therefore the drivers should work ;-)

I've force-installed in in 2008 R2 in the past and it worked just fine.
I'll open the bug.

David

That's why I'm concerned about video and mouse drivers - not getting
either of those when I install spice guest tools like I do with Win7
or XP. Please advise.

The tools installer should install virtio-serial driver and
spice-vdagent ("RHEV Spice Agent" service) for you. If the service is in
services.msc but it can not be started, you have a problem with
virtio-serial driver.

You can force-install qxl for win 7 64b if you wish to do so,

 but the
question is - why do you need graphic driver on server
 windows? The
spipce-vdagent should be all you need b/c it will give you

Hi,

It logged you out because of some command still in the VirtIO channel.
You should be ok after you logged back in again.

However without having some more details like if the service was still
running afterwards I can't tell you why you did not get the IP reported
in the engine.
Please check in the event viewer (start eventvwr.msc) if there were any
errors in the event log reported.
It's quite possible that it did not find the ini file when started as

I can't tell for sure without more information. Please check if you have

However, I have no idea why its EL6 counterpart is missing from

 http://resources.ovirt.org/releases/3.2/rpm/EL/6/noarch
We don't have a EL6 version due to the fact that the guest agent needs
in its current 3.2 shape the GDM sources available for building the SSO
(single sign on) modules. In Fedora 17 and 18 this was no problem so far
due to the fact that there were extra devel libraries for GDM plugins.

The master branch of the ovirt-guest-agent has already the possibility
to disable the SSO module for building. This is needed for a few other
linux targets. However this will be available with ovirt 3.3.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Maybe Vinzenz or Mike can help.

Ok, thanks. from where can I start?

On Fedora 17+ you can install the guest agent by 'yum install

On other OS you can start by checking out the git repository on the OS
you'd like to build it on.

`git clone http://gerrit.ovirt.org/p/ovirt-guest-agent.git`

On Windows you should follow these instructions:
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/gitweb?p=ovirt-guest-agent.git;a=blob;f=ovirt-guest-agent/README-windows.txt;h=HEAD

On Linux you go into the repository
$ ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --without-sso
And then as root
# make install

However not all files might yet be put into the right places on all
systems, and for Debian/Ubuntu systems we don't have any daemon or
upstart scripts, so far we only support systemd in the repository so
that would have to be done manually.

[Users] Fwd: oVirt Users Guest Usage Survey

2013-06-12 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

Hi,

I would like to ask everyone to please take the time to answer the
following survey: http://goo.gl/ADYiT

We'd like to see what's the common usage of the oVirt environment in the
community :-)

This is mainly due to the direction we're going to take with the oVirt
guest agent, so we can focus on supported OS and see what features are
required to be functional on those to be most useful to the community.

Thanks a lot :-)

I have posted a change in this regard to the ovirt engine frontend to

branch of ovirt engine. (for ovirt 3.5)
Additionally I made a second change to vdsm that it decides when to
forward the login request when the guest agent is responsive. This
change is currently still pending.

I am sorry that I did not respond to you mail. I was rather immediately
taking an action to having this addressed as this was the second time
somebody mentions this limitation.

Unfortunately there's no real quick fix at the moment where I am certain
that it works. In theory it should be enough to have an uninstall
application entry in the registry for the RHEV Agent, however this is
not a good thing and therefore I went with a different solution to avoid
such kind of problems in future.

Thanks in advance,

Are you refering to the paragraph: "When a required network becomes
non-operational, the virtual machines running on the network are fenced

running mission critical workloads."?

yes

Isn't that section referring to HA VMs?

this is about a single host in a cluster - ovirt can't even fence
single hosts in a single cluster yet, see my other bug report for this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1054778

I could provide logs if they are really necessary, but I doubt they are.
This is documented behaviour, but it is poorly designed, as described
in the BZ.

Apparently, I am not familiar enough with Engine's fencing logic; logs
may help me understand the issue, for me they are necessary is this
case. In particular, I'd like to see with my own eyes whether the VMs
where explicitly destroyed by Engine. Migrating VMs to an operational
destination makes a lot of sense. Destroying a running VM in attempt
to recuperate of a host networking issue is extraordinary (and as such,
requires exraordinary evidence).

I might be able to attach some logs later.

  * Installed the service. It shows up in services.msc.
  * Configure the service to auto start.
  * Try to start the service. This is where the problem exist. When I
try to start the service I get an error. The error code in Event
Viewer within Windows is Event 10.

Under the general tab is states "The description for Event ID 10 from
source OVirtGuestService cannot be found. Either the component that
raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the
installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on
the local computer."

I have tried to remove the service and re-install with no luck. Any
suggestions? Thanks!

Can you please check that the default.ini and default-logger.ini files
are also in that folder? They can be found in the
$(project_root)/configurations folder.

These files are now required if you build it from the master branch.

Once you have those two files in the target location, please try to
start the service again.

I am not sure what the Event ID 10 means, it's maybe just that the
process stopped unexpectedly.
Please also be sure that run OvirtGuestService.exe -install from the
location where you keep the binary, otherwise the path to the service
executable will be the wrong location.

According to this page:

I need the "Spice Agent". The table says Spice drivers should be
pre-installed, if I understand it properly [1]. Is that sufficient, or

Yes you'll need the 'spice-vdagent' to be running for copy and pasting
and all those features.

Thanks,

[1] Row 2 and row 3 use different terminology ("Built in" vs "Yes").
It's not clear if they mean the same thing. If they do, consistent
terminology would clarify. If they don't, some extra description or
links seem necessary to clarify.
Well it's about the availability. Yes means, it is available and Built
in means that it is already built-in and does not need any extra
installation.

[2] Similar to [1] there's the Spice Driver/Agent terminology
confusion. If they mean the same thing we should use consistent terms.
If they are separate, the agent seems to need a 4th row in the table
showing where/how to get it.

[ovirt-users] ovirt 3.5 TestDay Results

2014-07-03 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

Hi,

I had to test *Bug 1080987*
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1080987> -OVIRT35 - [RFE]
Support ethtool_opts functionality within oVirt

Installation of the engine went very smooth without a single issue, even
adding a previously used host through the host deploy went smoothly and
upgraded VDSM without any issues.

The feature worked as expected without any problems.

All in all I have to say that this time I had the best beta experience
since I am working with oVirt.

Good Job guys! :-)

Another question, in centos 6.5 I have spice-vdagent too, available
from standard updates repo, the version is:
Name: spice-vdagent
Arch: x86_64
Version : 0.14.0
Release : 3.el6_5

is this not new enough? because it is also not listed (this should apply
to rhel as well).
Well I wasn't sure. I was searching for SuSE Linux Enterprise first and
couldn't find anything. And as you say in RHEL/CentOS it should be
actually available in the standard repos (both of it) At least that's
what I assume. But I am not sure.

You can update it, and if someone complains we can fix it again :-P

If you set those parameters, you vCPU is not fired to 50% or 100%?

I actually think that
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1131548 should be considered
a blocker, however this seems to be related to live merge currently it
is assigned to virt.
The point is that there's an exception thrown during recovery which will
cause the state of the VM to be in a very unusable state.

Known indications so far:
- It's shown as 'Paused' in the UI while the VM effectively is 'UP'
- The guest agent communication channels are not initialized due to the
earlier bail out caused by the exception

   - Consequence visible in UI:
   - You can't soft shutdown the vm
   - Causes most likely exceptions when trying to access methods from
the guest agent during shutdown of the VM, live migration might fail

   - and other issues

And the following dependencies still open:
Bug 1041569 - [NFR] libvirt: Returning the watermark for all the images opened
for writing
Bug 1102881 - virDomainBlockCommit fails with live snapshots on oVirt block
storage

Some of above blockers may be dropped on today oVirt sync meeting if still open.
Some of the bugs blocking the release prevents automated testing to verify the
release.
Please fix them as soon as possible.

Feature freeze is now effective, and branch has been created.
All new patches must be backported to 3.5 branch too.
Features completed are marked in green on Features Status Table [2]

There are still 425 bugs [3] targeted to 3.5.0.

considered a blocker, however this seems to be related to live merge
currently it is assigned to virt.
The point is that there's an exception thrown during recovery which
will cause the state of the VM to be in a very unusable state.

Known indications so far:
- It's shown as 'Paused' in the UI while the VM effectively is 'UP'
- The guest agent communication channels are not initialized due to
the earlier bail out caused by the exception

   - Consequence visible in UI:
   - You can't soft shutdown the vm
   - Causes most likely exceptions when trying to access methods from
the guest agent during shutdown of the VM, live migration might fail

   - and other issues
So the fix for this issue I described above is already merged to
ovirt-3.5 the bug had two issues and the first one is solved already by
the merged patch. The second portion on the other hand is supposedly
less severe so it might not be a blocker anymore.

And the following dependencies still open:
Bug 1041569 - [NFR] libvirt: Returning the watermark for all the
images opened for writing
Bug 1102881 - virDomainBlockCommit fails with live snapshots on oVirt
block storage

Some of above blockers may be dropped on today oVirt sync meeting if
still open.
Some of the bugs blocking the release prevents automated testing to
verify the release.

Please fix them as soon as possible.

Feature freeze is now effective, and branch has been created.
All new patches must be backported to 3.5 branch too.
Features completed are marked in green on Features Status Table [2]

There are still 425 bugs [3] targeted to 3.5.0.
Excluding node and documentation bugs we still have 381 bugs [4]
targeted to 3.5.0.

You could try POST with content type: application/json

Oh I forgot to add: The body should be sufficient if it is '{}'

Hope that helps. :-)

It is awesome! * But dou you know what command can start the VM if

Re: [ovirt-users] Discovering oVirt/RHEV Engine from a VM guest

2014-09-25 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

On 09/25/2014 06:41 AM, Shawn Starr wrote:

Hello everyone,

I wonder if you can tell me how I can do this. I'm creating a VM image that
needs to discover it's hostname, IP address information so I can configure
/etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-[interface] and
other things.

That sounds to me like a use case for cloud-init.

If I know the oVirt/RHEV engine to connect to, I can get this information
successfully.

However, when creating a dummy 'gold' VM image and having oVirt clone it. I
have no 'key' to tell me what engine to connect to, other than trying them all
and hoping for best.

I've written some code with the oVirt SDK that needs to know the URL:

from ovirtsdk.api import API
import platform
import yaml
import sys

api =  API(url="https://HOW_TO_DISCOVER_THIS/api";,
   username="USER@internal",
   password="PASSWORD",
   insecure=True)

...

Is there a way to know the engine to connect to when VM has booted up?

I tried poking around ovirt/rhev-agent and noticed this:

in /usr/share/rhev-agent/vdsAgentLogic.py:
 self.vio.write('host-name', { 'name' : self.dr.getMachineName() })
This is a pretty ancient version of the guest agent. Nevertheless the
machine name is retrieved from the system, there's no magic happening by
talking to the engine or anything like that. If the system does not have
a configured FQDN or hostname it will just simply get what the system
has set. That might be even 'localhost@localdomain'

It *looks* like I could get the host name from what oVirt has configured w/o
knowing the engine to connect to? But I cannot open /dev/virtio-
ports/com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm (since rhev-agentd) has it opened 'too many files
open' error.

When using OpenNebula in past, they mounted a ISO CD image that contained the
VM's metadata you could read in as configuration and having also used AWS EC2
You can connect to localhost to the VM itself to get metadata to get this sort
of information.

That's what cloudinit is doing. :-)
From my knowledge however there is no metadata available to be received
within the guest without using cloudinit.

I really appreciate any help, if there's an easy way.

Thanks,
Shawn.

[ovirt-users] ovirt-3.5 ovirt-guest-agent linux builds are now available

2014-10-02 Thread Vinzenz Feenstra

Hi,

I have just released the ovirt-guest-agent ovirt-3.5 builds with version
1.0.10.2

The usual guest agent OBS repositories on have been updated for
- Debian 7
- Ubuntu 12.04, 13.10, 14.04
- openSuSE 12.3, 13.1
- SuSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP3

Builds for the guest agent on the fedora environment have been posted as
updates and are currently available in the testing repositories for:

- Fedora 19
- Fedora 20
- Fedora 21
- EPEL6 (el6)
- EPEL5 (el5)
- EPEL7 (el7)

It would be great if the users of the ovirt-guest-agent on Linux guests
could test the guest agent.

Thanks.

In that page we have the timestamp and tested version of
*Name*: oVirt Guest Agent on Ubuntu
*Modules*: ovirt-guest-agent
*Target version*: 3.4.1
*Status*: Done
*Last updated*: 2014-08-05 by Vfeenstr

That is valid also for 3.5rc3 and ubuntu 14.04

I edited the page

pointing to my referred page.
Let me know if ok for all

This looks a little bit like an APT repository (it has Packages and
Release) but I don't see the structure I expect (e.g. a dists directory).
This is just the way how OBS is doing this, so I have no influence on
the 'dists' directory in this case the dist name is just a slash ('/')
What is the appropriate APT line e.g. for sources.list? What is the
uri, suite, and component? I'm able to fetch the .deb and install it
manually (and then fix the missing dependencies) but a properly
configured APT repository would make this more seamless.
How to add it to the sources.list is shown here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/GuestAgentUbuntu#Installation
The URL to use can be found here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/GuestAgentUbuntu#Repository

service --status-all should show the guest agent as well, however on

The ACPI reboot should work though, even without the guest agent but not

For the bug...please provide me more information on itand how to

Run as root: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade ovirt-guest-agent
That should install ovirt-guest-agent in version 1.0.10.2 that should
fix the issue

The complete source code is here:

This is the relevant code for opening the channel. The name of the target it
gets from the configuration file which is for the oVirt Guest Agent
\\.\Global\com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm

Well it will increase the time to 3 minutes and takes effect after restarting
vdsm and supervdsm - If that is enough that might depend on your setup.

Well I might be wrong, but from what I can see that is the right value to
configure this.

Well you can look how we do it in the ovirt-guest-agent. But we’re not
reopening the unix domain socket - We’re basically on read failure just
rescheduling the read - That causes no problems after migrations - it just
continues

Our python code for that is here:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-guest-agent/blob/master/ovirt-guest-agent/VirtIoChannel.py

Well you could use the Python SDK http://www.ovirt.org/Python-sdk

Or have the ovirt guest agent running - Which handles the shutdowns and reboots
too
