Hook: 2XL nymph hook ring or down eye, usually #8 or #6 Thread: Red Weight: .020 five wraps or leave unweighted and use a sinking line with shorter leader Body: Wapsi Spectrumized Brown (Canadian Brown) yarn Hackle collar: Yellow dyed or natural pheasant rump feather, tied in at tip. Over and underwing: Peacock sword feather Head: Peacock herl pattern is tied back to front in this order: 1. Wrap and affix lead to middle third of hook shank. 2. Wrap a solid thread base over rear third of hook shank 3. Remove Canadian Brown yarn from the yarn thread cores 4. Blend yarn with flash dubbing, if desired. I use Arizona Simi Seal Canadian Brown. 5. Trap Canadian Brown yarn, used like dubbing, in a dubbing loop. Twist loop tightly. 6. Wrap yarn in dubbing loop in tight wraps over the lead and middle third of hook shank, tie off. Sweep back the yarn each wind to keep it from being trapped under the next wind. 7. Spread pheasant rump feather so barbs are 90 degrees to quill. 8. Tie in tip of rump feather and wind 3-4 wraps until desired density of barbs is reached. 9. Use 5-6 pieces of peacock sword directly above and directly below the hook shank, and tie in. You can pick the pieces so that the curves are like matched streamer feathers, for better appearance. The fish don't care. 10. Tie in 5-6 strands of peacock herl directly in front of rump/sword feather. Wind the herls around the thread, then wrap the head densely, about the front fourth of the hook to behind the hook eye. 11. Wrap a red thread head and finish. 12. Pick out yarn fibers with a bodkin. Ideally you want to be able to use the pheasant rump feather without having to trim it to length, so pick your rump feather for barb length. Rear ends of pheasant rump, peacock sword, and picked-out yarn should end within 1-1/2 times the hook length. Typically, I fish this with 4x tippet on an intermediate line. [VFB] Up or Straight eye for streamers
I've been looking at streamers in several different places in books and on the web. I'm wondering what the general consensus is as to using down eyes or straight eyes for the hooks. It seems it is a bit difficult to find/afford some of the straight-eyed streamer hooks. Well maybe not totally out of line, but it seems strange to pay a couple dollars more for 25 TMC/Tiemco 8089's as opposed to a similar(R74-9672) mustad hook with a down eye. (Seems to be the general pricing trend) Is it a case of paying for something better or just pricing to take advantage of what the market will bear? Anybody here have any thoughts/reasons for choosing down eye or straight eye hooks for streamers? I just thought I'd tie a box full of Woolly Buggers while listening to the Rangers on the radio, and noticed I had very few hooks with straight eyes and 4X long. I usually go one step farther and shape them with a dremel tool and sandpaper (Google 'Sleazy Steve'). That's what I do and save myself the trouble of painting. flip-flops come in quite a variety of colors. I even found a set of hole punching dies at Harbor Freight Tools a that have chucks for my drill. You can stick or paint eyes on them and decorate them with a waterproof marker. Rubber legs can be added by tying them behind the bodies or threading a needle with your rubber legs and running it through the body. When you coat them with clear epoxy they are almost bullet proof. I picked this up from Jim Hatch on FAOL. Only problem I've had is figuring out what size bodies to make for the particular aberdeen hook sizes I have on hand. Forces me to go somewhere and buy/look at fly tying stuff. ;-) I really enjoy making the bodies...my tying is a bit more of a chore(not so pretty sometimes either) LOL(the fish and my wife like'em though) rodgerole -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Sinking or Sink tip Line?
I fish in a large pond/small lake near my home from my kayak. It seems I can't find any wall hanger brim there, but occasionally I catch a few big enough to eat. It is very difficult to fly fish because of the mats of weeds interspersed with the lily pads. Sometimes it appears you are fishing in open water but the weeds are there just a couple of inches or so below the surface. If you get a hit they dive in the weeds immediately or wrap around a lily pad, and poof, no fish. It does give me practice tying flies though. I have found that with great patience and flies like the chili pepper and some off-shoots in dragon fly and damsel fly colors I can dredge the bottom in some of the deeper places and manage an occasional keeper. I have 5.5 foot 4 wt, a 7 foot 5 weight pack rod and an 8 1/2 foot 6-7 weight. My favorite is the shorty, but I don't cast it well with a leader long enough to fish in 12-15 feet of water effectively with a floating line. Would a sinking line or sink tip allow me to use a shorter leader so I can cast a bit farther? I can get enough line out with the 6-7 weight, but it is a bit of an overkill for 6-8 fish. I currently have only floating lines and have never tried a sinking or sink tip line. So y'all clue me in please. rodgerole, farmersville,tx -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Holding marabou tight, wrap thread in open spirals 2/3-3/4 length of the marabou. Tie 3-4 wraps and spiral back to hook. The closer the spiral wraps, the more durable, but less flexible, the tail becomes. 4. Remove hook from vise and re-orient facing forward. Dub thread and wrap to bead chain. Use a bead for the head and hiliters for color. DonO, Not only are they hard to the feel, they are a pain in the butt to make look like his grub in the article. I gave up on using them in a swap because it takes me several tries and a couple of days to make one that I like. I may succeed yet, but for the time being I'm stymied. Seems there are too many things to get just right for this klutzy old phart. LOL Rodger P.s. Re: [VFB] Problem with tying this critter
Thanks, DonO and Joyce, Maybe I need to explain further. I too can and do make mono eyes from several sizes of monofilament line. That is not the problem. The problem is getting the mono to fuse together. I'm gonna try and acquire some different brands of mono to try, but of the four I've tried so far, they want to melt away from each other when the ends are heated while holding them in a pair of needlenose pliers, hemostats, or tweezers. I will go dig out some of my weedeater cutting line to see if that works, and will report back. I have several sizes of weedeater line, but may not have any small enough. We'll see. BTW, can you melt the mono with a cautery without messing up the tool? Rodger -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. [VFB] Problem with tying this critter
**/*Help!! */ I've made several tries at melting the mono to get it to look suitable for the heads of these grubs. Mine seem to want to melt and bend away from each other instead of fusing. I've tried wrapping them with mono thread before applying heat, tying them to the hooks shank before heating,a butane cigarette lighter, an alcohol burner and have about run out of things to try. I'd appreciate any ideas that might help me make suitable heads for my grub experiment with this fusing/melting the mono method. Fwd: [VFB] Tying Light Maybe?????
Can't afford all the bells and whistles some of you folks have. I don't see very well, but manage to get by with a regular desktop gooseneck lamp with one of those twisted fluorescent daylight bulbs. The one I'm using now is a 15 watt'er, and does a decent job for me. I wouldn't want to get too spoiled. My wife already thinks I spend too much money on this oh so addictive habit. rodgerole -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group.
