Gary: I’m going to check those out, because it’s been yrs since I did
anything like that as a welder, and when I did, the Propane alone wasn’t hot
enough (specially since aluminum conducts heat away from the torch’s flame
sooo fast, that you had to have a brazing rod, which took Oxy Acetyline like I
said before to get them to melt and hold tight. Thanks, Chuck

a propane tourch and an aluminum rod made special for doing this type of
repair is the way to go. you can even weld coke cans together wothout burning
a hole in them. My old canoe has several holes repaired this way from being
run agound on sharp rocks. Very easy to use.

Wes,
I have tubs of flies that are not sorted . These are flies given to me
by the original tyers. I have tyed at a number of shows with Tom and he gave me
an original Pig Boat about 21 years ago. I would not know where to find it now
except going through the plastic tubs that I have the flies in. Due to some
problems I have, I am not able to do that. Looking at the photo, I am pretty
sure it is not the original. I sat next to Tom many times and watched him tie
that fly.
I recently sold my book collection so I can't look it up. I had Tom's
books.

  Hi VFB,

I am researching the origins and possible original recipe (if
this is actually a Tom Nixon creation) for this fly:

  http://chemprof.tripod.com/midnite2.htm

Is this a Tom Nixon original tied in the way he did it, or a
variation created by someone else that is distantly related to Nixon's
creations?

I know that Nixon did the Calcasieu Pig Boat, but am wondering
about the pedigree of the pattern configuration linked above.

  Anybody know?

  Thanks,
  Wes

A couple of years ago, I could have supplied you with some black squirrel
tails. When we first moved into this house the squirrels in our backyard were
evenly split between the black variant and the normal gray. But I haven't seen
a black one for over a year. If one shows up I'll get my air rifle and knock
one off the bird feeder We don't live in the city, but we're too close to get
away with shooting a regular firearm.

VFB Roll Call... Who’s still here?

And let us know how you are doing if you feel like it.

I’ll start. Got my diabetes on the run. Off insulin now (un-officially) and
my BG readings are still all normal. Exercise and diet have been the key for
me. Up to a mile on the treadmill now- walking, jogging, and wind-sprinting up
to 6 mph so far with incline. Two months ago a 5 min. 2 mph level walk pooped
me out. My BP is now normal after the workout and after the cool-down. Have
lost 45 pounds so far (less of me to love). Who-hoo!

Anyone interested in fly swaps now that winter is here? Something with
ice-dubbing? or polar bear?

Good friends are like quilts-they age with you, yet never lose their

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon, before they
understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

W business is it if I choose to read, or play on the computer, until 4 AM, or
sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the
40s. 50s, 60s and if I at the same time wish to weep over a lost love, I
will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body
and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying
glances from the jet set. They too will get old some day - if they're lucky.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as
well forgotten. And, eventually, I usually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break
when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's
beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength,
understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile,
and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray and to
have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair could turn
silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what
other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the
right to be wrong.

I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I
am not going to live forever, but while I am still here I will not waste time
lamenting what could have been or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat
dessert every single day (but only if I feel like it).

I keep a hook hone in my chest pack check the hook if
I have a couple of misses in a row. Plus, I lose enough flies that I generally
have a sharp one availableJ

I read an article that suggested that many fish were lost
due to slightly dull hooks. This author carried a file and after a period of
nymphing would resharpen the hook. I am not as diligent as I should be on
checking that and it sounds like my mentor Tony isn't either.

Tony, I'd say you had a very successful day. The
main thing was for them to catch fish, right?
You accomplished that. Sometimes the guide doesn't
need to catch any. And at least you
got back to the house safely and the problem was a
simple dead battery. :-P

Yes, I fish for carp. Everyone living near waters holding carp should try
it. They can be very skittish, picky, and hard to hook. I've found that carp
living in moving waters can be very strong. Carp in still waters are sometimes
a bit of a disappointment.

The real question is Do you release them, or toss them up on the bank? I
lean toward the latter.

As some of you know, I write a how-to-tie article for my local club's
newsletter. There is a carp fly in the current issue
http://austinflyfishers.com/newsletters/AFFAugNL12.pdf . The carp down here
don't seem to be as willing as some other areas of the country to take a fly,
but in the heat of a summer drought, sometimes they are the only fishing
available. Be sure to check out the pictures in the newsletter of a friend's
and my trip to Baja.

Tying a bunch o Thunder Creek streamers.
Does anyone have the original recipe for them?

Robert,

I'll have to see if I can find which book I took the pattern from. It was
supposed to be the original pattern. The materials were simply different
colors of bucktail. Top color, bottom color, and one black bucktail hair
on each side for a mid-line. Painted eyes if you so desired. Being
lazy, I didn't paint mine.

As memory strikes me (and it's losing it's punch these days), they were
tied on a Mustad 9672.

I caught an approximately 10-lb. catfish on my last one about 6 years ago
and haven't gotten around to tying more. I think it's about time to start
again.

They seem to, but I always assumed a fish saw black and white, same as
cats. But we had a cat that liked rad marabou.

Or do I pick the fly with the hot spot days when the fish are more
available?

I use a hot spot on just about everything, including adding a red
beard on all of my streamers.

I sat next to Aron Jasper at a show 2 years ago when he was just
coming up with competition flies, and he raved about hot spots, so I
took his advise and adapted some patterns.

This year we did less fishing trips, but did well when we got out.

Exactly: It's like child abuse. ONE case of it, is one case TOO MANY.
Question is, what can we as fly tiers do to make sure we do NOT use any animal
parts that have been killed like this??? I'm fortunate on my PPP fly. The body
is chenille. The tail is squirrels tails that I pick up on the side of the road
as road kill (and road kill is MUCH more humane way to die than the ways in
these films. And the hackle I use came from Denny Conrad, and I am positive he
does NOT practice this type of behavior. And I'm HOPE that Whiting farms
doesn't either??? I for one, will be using as much man made materials as
possible in the flies I tie. Chuck

I was sent a link that woke some hope that it's not the common practice
that the video shows. Apparently it's already a well discussed video and some
things hint that it's just one in a row of these arranged propaganda tools.

But still, even if it turns out this was just this one time (and not before

Hi Wes;

I use Cascade Crest tools ceramic midge bobbin for both Pearsalls
spools and sewing machine bobbins.

  Hi VFB!

A question: I am in the market for a fly tying bobbin holder that is
meant to handle those small stainless steel spools made for sewing machines.

In looking over the various manufacturers' catalogs, I see a
confusing array of bobbin holders: some labeled small or midge but none
saying specifically that a sewing machine spool can be held by these without
some wire bending, Rube Goldberg inventiveness.

Budget is also a consideration. Ceramic tips would also be nice.

What do you recommend as a value-priced bobbin holder meant for the
small sewing machine spools?

Any other alternatives or suggestions other than going that route?

  Thanks,

  Wes Wada

  Gary,

Sorry you're going to miss the 'Bug'.

So is that your bride or someone else's? Just kidding. I understand- I've
done it too.

(The father walks the bride up the aisle, and the husband walks her down the
isle. The transfer is made- hubby is stuck with her. You'll know someone's
made a mistake if, after the wedding, the father dances back down the aisle
while clicking his heels in jubilation and yelling 'who-hoo'!)

You must stand to benefit if she is a good cook. So is that 1st-hand or
2nd-hand invite meals?

It's been a while since I hosted a streamer swap, tried one in the summer

streamer of choice. Max 10 tyers.

Deadline April 15, in time for trolling for big fish after ice out.

I want some koala if you get one. Some wombat would be interesting too.

Oh, if you need some Cajun RK recipes, just let me know. The other

I've checked again, and the EPs aren't listed on any cities list still, as
their numbers are at or above
normal (millions in some of many rookeries), and there are no imposing
threats. Hundreds of thousands
die each year of natural causes and predation just to keep the populations in

yield a lot of feathers.

I gotta have them for my 'Ridlin Special Bi-polar Flies'. Tony has one.

A friend moved here from Israel for a 2 year stint at a youth organisation,

collect 'samples' if you were careful ;)
On the bright side, I have noticed many wombats, wallabies and kangaroos on
the side of the road and will be doing a bout of harvesting in the very near
future. Had a large koala once in the middle of nowhere but my wife was in the
car and would have castrated me if I touched it. Lots of Rainbow Lorikeets
around too...google them and you will see why I am so excited (especially
if you are into Salmon Flies).
I also saw half a dozen penguins down on the beach near my house yesterday.
Sorry DonOthey are the little Fairy Penguins..and protected something

Neville, I understand totally. This is not a political debate, but a
reality we all face and have caused by living in a technological age. As long
as we operate vehicles and heat our homes (and AC them), we are going to need
sources of power. This is what it's all about. No one, including me, wants to
see the the sacrifice of our land and liviability surrendered to the
unscruplous and loosely handled operations of the greedy energy conglomerates
and Wall St. We all want it, but 'over there, not here'.

That's what's driving the whole industry to look for alternte fuels and
sources of power. So now in Wyoming we have huge windmill farms that are just
as bad as CBM (or logging was) for desecrating the landscapes and horizons.
They have to have roads, maintenance crews, distribution lines, etc., and all
this messes with the enviornment.

No one wants dams anymore, so tear them down. Coal companies fund those
efforts.
No one wants oil or natural gas operations, especially near them.
Obvious reasons, as Neville stated.
No one wants the pollution of coal-fired power plants, although with
proper scrubbing, they're much better than they used to be. (But electric cars
will be needed to make use of the transportation capabilities.)
Solar power is an option for generating electricity, but decades from
meaningful contributions (like windmills).
Geothermal is being done, but too few places, and most of them parks.
Volcanoes are a good source of power, but are problemmatical and usually
require human sacrifice. (lol)
Here they want to take the windmills down in lieu of scenery and the
environment.
Bio-fuels are expensive to produce, like ethanol, and this has come under
fire for corruption and inefficiency.
Some local waste-gas systems are efficient, but don't affect the big
problems, not yet anyway.
Hydrogen may be a way, but it is very problemmatical.
Offshore methane hydrate deposits may have more btu's locked up than all
the other sources on earth combined, but it is very hard to reach and expensive
to get to the surface. We don't even have the technology yet to get it, but
some proposals are out there. I say slurry- we'll see.
If we can harness lightning, that could be a source, but again, is
decades from reality.
Nuclear Energy is making a comeback (as GB would say- 'nucular'), but
that has it's risks, too. Do you want to live downwind of one?
Wood-burning in fireplaces is banned in cities all over the country
because of smoke pollution.

So, in the big picture, what's working against your favorite fishing and
recreating areas? Demand and control. We demand and they control. 'We' are
the users and 'they' are the providers (along with the 'parasites' of the
providers). Everyone who has their hand in the fuel-till is a parasite of the
provider, and the provider is a parasite of the land. Even if one is an energy
investor, he has a responsibility for the harm done. So a portion of every
dollar you spend on fuel is used to wreck your environment (or their's), and
then line the pockets of rich people politicians, and then get you where you
want to be, heat your home, and cook your burgers. I don't have to explain how
powerful the oil companies are when it comes to detroit and mpg for cars. Wow,
all of a sudden cars are getting 35+ mpg. Why didn't they do that 20/30 years
ago? Shall I name all the players, your governments included? So we decided
to make OPEC rich and then deal with the consequences later (shifting the
burden to our children). But at least they not gathering energy on our
favorite plot of land.

Subject: [VFB] Need a source for pine squirrel strips

Hi FlyGuys and FlyGals,

We've had three brilliant, springlike days in a row, here in central
Oregon. All signs point to an early spring and early bug hatches. Much
preferred over last year, when it warmed very late and turned wintery early. It
felt like our whole fishing season got compressed to July. Hope weather goes
better for you.

I need a source for inexpensive, quality pine squirrel strips, preferably
on hide. There are roughly 15-19 cut pine squirrel strips per hide. The longest
strip might be six inches long, the shortest maybe 4.5. I ordered two half
skins from Feathercraft, but the order came to $21.85 including shipping. I can
order full skins distributed by Wapsi through the local flyshop, but cost
unknown at the moment, and probably a bit pricey. The local Wholesale Sports
has some closeout Wapsi stripped full skins, but they are all a dark brown. But
at $9.99 a full skin, seems reasonable.

That's the price range I have found so far. Does anyone know of a quality
source for DYED pine squirrel strips on hide? At a reasonable cost?
Linesend.com does carry natural pine squirrel hides at $4.95, but they are not
stripped and not dyed.

Thanks for any info!

I will be going on my honeymoon around Jan, exact time is yet to be
determined and am looking into some different destinations. I would
like to go somewhere where I can do some fishing for a few days, the
trip will be about 2 weeks. Anyway right now we are looking at
somewhere in the Carribean but we can go anywhere we want. I have
been looking into Belize as a spot to stop since the fishing there is
supposed to be excellent. We want a place where we can lay on the
beach, enjoy some sun in Jan (I'm from Montana), and can do some
saltwater fishing. I have never done any saltwater fishing, just
interested in catching some good fish, don't really care what they
are. They don't have to be a high profile fish like Bonefish or
something, although that would be fun too. We are also looking into
multiple destinations during our trip. Are there any suggestions of
places to visit? I could use any help!!!

The fly is tied for initial use at Davis Lake in the Oregon Cascades. This
is a fishery that used be prime for big rainbows until illegally planted
largemouths took over. There are bucketmouths there in the 6-7 pound range,
and the fly fishers are intent to remove as many as possible (losing cause).
The frog will see a lot of action starting in April.

re: Mike Bliss's question. The big rainbows at Sugar Creek Ranch can be
enticed by a popper fly, but that is half the size of these bugs. Not sure
what reaction I will get until these are fished this season. It might help to
scale them down in size. The three green frogs are literally the first three

Hi You All,

I mentioned in a previous post that I have been very busy and involved
with fly tying.

For the last year and a half, I've developed a style and technique of
tying using kids' modeling clay -- Crayola brand's Model Magic -- as
a basis for new fly patterns. These have included an October Caddis
pupa, a Field Cricket, and a Dragonfly Nymph.

Attached are the first three Green Frogs, in the order that they were
created.

Materials are: white moldable foam, polypropylene yarn, rubber legs,
and various flash materials. Coloring is acrylic paint and art
marker. The eyes are created with fabric paint. All of this is
mounted on a large stinger hook. The space behind the eye of the hook
is where a new type of weed guard will be tied in. There are a good
number of ideas going into this fly.

The frog's legs are springy and hold their shape, and you can make the
shapes surprisingly fast. The legs are shaped with a simple jig I've
invented.

The body length, not including the legs, is 2 inches. The fly is
lightweight, a tenth of an ounce.

I've developed a technique that solidly anchors the hook in the
hardened foam. That's been battled tested.

I make about five frogs at a time, mass producing all the parts.
Assembly is very quick. The bodies are all quite similar, as they are
all made at the same time, using the same tools. The basic shape is
still in progress. The variety of legs possible is a heap of fun.

Coloring can take as long as you want. These are early prototypes, so
I didn't spend a whole lot of time coloring them, maybe three minutes
each.

Green Frog is the name of a common pond frog.

These are hand-held digital photos. I will be redoing the shots later
with studio equipment. Also, the fly is still evolving, and who knows
what it will be like or look like in a month or two.

Hope you enjoy seeing some new stuff. I've sure enjoyed the puttering
around...

Actually that is not quite true, Pennsylvania requires that fishing be done
with artificial flies and streamers constructed of natural or synthetic
materials, so long as all flies are constructed in a normal fashion on a single
hook with components wound on or about the hook. Anything other than these
items is prohibited.

Steelhead flies are a perfect example, e.g. crystal meth. My steelhead fly

The patterned ones came with flour or sugar in them

Re: [VFB] Head Magnifiers

2010-02-03 Thread The Smiths
Well for me I'm so near sighted that I can barely see past the end of my nose.
My normal glasses have a veritable bifocal in them. The trouble with them was
they gave me neck pain because I had to tip my head back to see the screen
clearly. So my eye doc made me a pair that focus between 18 and 26 inches. I
can work on the PC without neck strain and they also work very well tying flies
as my vice is centered in the focus zone. Can't drive, or walk down the steps
with them, but on the PC reading the paper or tying flies they work great.
They don't make things bigger just very clear. From our conservation he makes a
lot of them for office workers that are looking at screens all day.

use huge fonts. Thanks, Chuck

sporadically ever since except for my tenure in grad school. I started
fly-fishing about a year after I started tying. I primarily fish warmwater
