RE: [VFB] Peggy's Fly Swaps to improve missive
You keep us going Peggy, you and all our swapmeisters. The heart and soul of the VFB started out with swaps. I hope it continues to be. As you have said so well, there is no better way to encourage ourselves and others to become better learners, teachers, and tiers. I joined this group when the last 100 caddis fly swap was finishing up. I was too late to participate. 100 was a lot of flies to tie. But that was nothing compared to the host (Byard)who had to tie 100 flies and then sort, package, and mail out about 10,000 flies. I think he did that twice, maybe three? times. Whew!My hat is off to anyone who hosts a swap.Someday I'll take the plunge. Maybe soon. Gary L Webb When I organize a swap, I first looked at what had been done; now I look at what I want to tie and have not done yet, and the second fly leads from last years swap that I organized. Example, streamers, I started with Carrie Stevens and the usual Maine streamers, then went on to the other lesser known creators. Now the the real fish able ones. For next year we will maybe do the Nick Lambrough Heron series and something else. RE: [VFB] Selling flies online
I have AK Best's book,Production Fly Tying. I haven't looked at it for years. But I remember he had recommendations for setting up your bench, lighting, chair, vise, materials, hooks, and his methods for each step of tying the different parts of various types of flies. In there he says he had to tie a hundred dozen of a pattern before he had it down. I read the whole book to learn some of his techniques. But I had no more illusions about tying flies for money. RE: [VFB] fish handling
Birdie, Good news about your scan. We'll pray the next one show the tumors shrinking or gone. From what I've read, lipping a Bass and holding it vertically causes minimal harm to the fish. But torqueing them horizontal can cause damage to the jaw. Especially with heavier fish. Makes sense to me. The last bass I saw caught was by my 5 year old grandson Ethan. A whopping 8 inch monster. I don't know who was more excited, him or me. Which reminds me I should be taking him and his three sisters fishing again soon. We are taught to hold fish supporting their bellies etc but a lot of Bass get swung on to decks and held up by their mouths. I am not critising and dont want to start any arguments, just curious if it does harm the fish or not. To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.commailto:vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Date: Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 9:32 AM Last week I tried out a new fly that I (just because it was so ugly) bought earlier this summer in a fly shop up north. As ugly as it was, it turned out to be quite effective. When everything else I tried (including the Chili Pepper) struck out, this one seemed to work. But a couple of days ago, when Teresa and the girls were with me, I lost one in a tree almost immediately after losing the first fish. I didn't want to risk losing the second (last) one before I had copied it, so I chose something else that had a little of the same features - very visible, very slowly sinking... and ugliness: a white bugger with a bunch of round rubber legs for tail. MAN was that a good choice!!! It turned out to be a fish magnet. Before they had even left I had lost another fish... and at the end of the day I had caught three, lost another two, and missed three or four takes (and naturally lost the two white flies). Considering that I was only there for three hours (and that also other club members say that it seems slow there now)... it was something out of the ordinary. If it wasn't the lake that suddenly had a very good day, this will probably be my new goto fly. (Sorry Tony... the Chili Pepper is out. LOL) I'm quite sure I got these rubber tailed buggers from someone at the VFB, two black and two white (unfortunately now lost), either as bonus flies in a swap or along with one of the kick off boxes which were sent to me when I first got stuck in here. They have been sitting untouched in my flybox for quite a while so I can't remember which. Last night I was going to tie up more of the white ones but even though I thought that the thinnest rubber legs I had were very thin... these ones were even thinner. I took a picture for comparison: The left fly is the original black version. The right fly is my (as it turned out: fat tailed) test replica... with Dan Bailey's rubber legs size Small. Anyone who recognizes this fly and can tell me what kind of rubber legs they are? Pictures 'fly.jpg' and 'tails.jpg' attached. This may be what you're looking for. http://jonestones.com/ They appear to be the source for most of the foils I've seen in fly shops or at the local fly fishing shows. These are transfer foils which can be pressed on to the adhesive backed craft foam, or you use foiling glue spread on regular craft foam sheets. You can also apply them to tacky epoxy or silicone. Hope this helps. Jerry Caruso All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia. Anyone have any suggestions on where I can find holographic laminates or vinyls for crease flies? I am looking for 8 x 12 or 12 x 12 sheets in silver and gold with the sparkle pattern and the prismatic pattern. They can be adhesive backed or heat transfer type materials. Most of my searches come up with the bulk trade companies (alibaba, trade-china, trade-india, etc.) or have large quantities required to buy the material. I am looking for small batches of material that I can get over extended periods of time not the one off ebay type purchase. RE: [VFB] World's record fly casting distance... This is unreal!!!!!!!
Many famous fly fishers have participated in casting competitions. Among them, Lee Wulff, Joan Wullf, Mel Krieger, and of course Steve Rajeff. Things they have learned are of benefit to all of us. Whether it is improved equipment (rods, reels, fly lines) or casting techniques. Casting accurately at any distance requires the same process. These competitors have analyzed the casting process to nth degree. Some with computers and videos and some just have gifts that allow them to sense everything about their casting: The rod, the line, and their own stroke. I have no reason to promote the guy and have never heard of him/her till just now, but they do have 100% positive feedback rating. Can somebody tell me what the advantage of using a Mustad hook #37160 (see the link at the bottom to see what I'm talking about) over a standard scud hook??? i have a bunch of the #37160 type, but I just use standard scud hooks cause I think the gap on the 37160's is too small, after you get all the fly's dressing on it. All I have used that hook for is a little inch worm caterpillar type pattern, cause the curvature on that hook looks like the inch worm in motion. to me more than the regular scud hook does, but that's just my opinion, and the dressings on that pattern don't get in the way of the hook gap hardly at all. There are several reasons: I just turned 75 and Jody won't let me make long trips alone. Allan offered to fly down and ride up with me, but I wouldn't hear of that, although it places him at the top of my Best Friend list. :-) Secondly, My feet and ankles have deterioriated to the point that when I go to Walmart or the grocery, I grab one of those instore electric scooters. I can walk, but lots of pain afterwards. Thirdly, my lower left back gives me hell. I go to the Chiropractor once a week. He straightens me out and I'm good for the week, but always do something Dumb to throw it out again. Like unloading hay for Calico or putting Christmas boxes up high on storage shelves. Doesn't hurt to play golf, but if I swing too hard, I fall on my butt. :-[ Lastly, I have a tremor problem with my hands. My doc says it's not Parkinsons, thank the Lord. He called it Essential Tremor. He said an essential tremor, is one that comes on gradually, with no known cause. Told me that some types of essential hand tremors are hereditary. My Mom had them as did her father. Never seemed to really bother them. Good news is that they do not indicate a serious condition, but they sure can be frustrating, especially when tying flies. In general, they don't appear when my hand is at rest and are more obvious if my hand is held in a position that is uncomfortable, or if I get frustrated. Kind of wringing of the hands, but I've always done that. Funny thing about it is that when the tremor comes, I can think stop and it will stop. Doc was amazed at this and said he'd never seen it before. I can also keep the tremor from coming on just by thinking it away, like when I'm tying flies. But still hard to concentrate on two things at once. ;-) Bueno Rises. JIMMY D º * JIMMY D. A lot of you knew that we have been trying to get moved for about three years now. And we FINALLY moved in on 9/11/2011. We LOVE it our here way in the sticks. And within 10 miles in either directions, there is more fishing than you could do in a lifetime. But one of the best things is that I got my own little tying room/man cave. I say little and I mean little, cause the whole room is only 5' by 14', and I have to share enough of that with my boss to set up her sewing machine :):):).. here's a pic of my little piece of the room. All I need now is a roll top desk to tie at. I saw some at Hobby Lobby for about $299 that would make AWESOME tying stations. (That, and to get my padded, comfortable, roll around computer/tying chair back from my son who swiped it for his computer desk after breaking his chair) And, i have tiles to lay on the floor, and a counter top to go on that little drawer base that I just haven't mounted on it yet. It's great to sit in there any tie while listening to my beloved Wa eagle, Auburn Tigers on the radio. maybe I should put the TV from my bedroom in there BTW. This is as clean as you'll EVER see this room. RE: [VFB] A Different Panfish/ Hooligan Fishing
Looks very similar to the smelt run fishing around the Great Lakes usually done at night and not barefoot. The smelt runs here used to be really something at their peak in the 60's when people would dip up a pickup truck full. Every spring there used to be Smelt Fry fund raisers. I haven't seen one for years. Probably because the runs have been decreasing for reasons no one has discovered. Deep fried beer batter smelt hot out of the fryer with a cold one to drink is hard to beat. RE: [VFB] fishing
There are already many legal ramifications when you try to take water out of any of the Great Lakes. Just one local example: The city of Waukesha, WI is located only 15 miles from Lake Michigan. The drinking water from their wells contains high levels of radon. They are not permitted to get water from Lake Michigan because their drainage basin does not return water to the lake. It goes down the Fox River to the Mississippi River. They have been trying to get an exemption for a good while. I don't think they have gotten one so far. Then there is a little item called the Great Lakes Water Compact. Eight States and two or three Canadian Provinces that border the Lakes. I believe the main reason for their existence is to prevent water from the Great Lakes being used anywhere else. I'm not saying myself that I agree with that philosophy. But I'm pretty sure that western states residents would consider any suggestion to take water from their rivers or reservoirs to ship somewhere else to be fighting words. Just an aside. For several years the water levels in the Great Lakes have been below the normal averages. Some Lakes were one to two feet low. It doesn't sound like much compared to 130 feet. But with lakes the size of Superior and Michigan it probably equals or surpasses the loss in Lake Mead. Only in the last two have they returned to normal. Of course any final decision on water usage from the Great Lakes will have to be a Federal one with the usual years of Congressional debates before anything happens. I just wanted to point out that it isn't just an engineering problem that will have to be resolved to get water from an area with an abundance to those areas with shortages. That plus the amount of energy to transport fuel through a pipeline is relatively small in relationship to the amount of energy in the fuel. I can't imagine the same applies for water. you would probably use more energy to transpot the water to hydroelectric dams then you could generate. So the energy to do this would probably make it cost prohibitive let alone the cost to build all the pipelines required. They built the Hoover dam in 1931 I think it was, and created Lake Mead, which gives most of the South West, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas etc, it's water supply for 90% of their water. Yet, since 1999 (partly because of population explosions in the area, and partly cause of draughts) the water level in Lake Mead had DROPPED get this 130 FEET. And it's still dropping. And he had this water dept big wig woman talking about the problem and they were talking about how we have well over 600 MILES of the Alaskan oil pipeline, and THOUSANDS of miles of Natural gas lines running from Texas all over the US. So, they were saying why don't we built water lines, to take water from where there is too much (like where you are, and all through the mid west) and pipe it over and into Lake Mead etc, to where there is a shortage of water?? Makes sense to me. Ppl say well, that cost too much. But look at what the cost to this country will be when probably 20-50 MILLION ppl who rely on water (and electrical power cause of the huge turbines that run there) from Lake Mead and other lakes in that part of the country, are suddenly out of water, and they all move back east. What a mess we'd have on our hands, and we'd better fix the problem while we can, and I think the idea of diverting water from flooded area, to those in draught areas makes perfect sense. Then, later, if Lake mead ever flooded, and the Midwest was in a draught, the water could just be reversed. It was a big bull and almost black in color. Had the gill plates, but only could tell by the flap-shape, since the colors were so dark. What he was doing in that cold lake I'll never know, but he was surviving. Took a lot of fish out of there on flies and never caught another 'gill and never heard of another being caught. BTW, the GF Dept. poisoned that lake to kill the carp and make it a trout lake. It's a pure carp lake now. Way to go, GF. I also used to catch bluegills in a pond north of Belfield, N. Dakota. It was a large farm pond, and the bluegills were all monsters and would take bass bugs readily. So although bluegills are classified as warm-water panfish, I have caught them in cold northern waters. And the best use of his invention was closing wounds of soldiers in Viet Nam. It is still being used for some surgical procedures. Loading...] KINGSPORT, Tennessee (AP) -- Harry Wesley Coover Jr., known as the inventor of Super Glue, has died. He was 94. Coover was working for Tennessee Eastman Company, a division of Eastman Kodak, when an accident helped lead to the popular adhesive being discovered, according to his grandson, Adam Paul of South Carolina. An assistant was distressed that some brand new refractometer prisms were ruined when they were glued together by the substance. In 1951, Coover and another researcher recognized the potential for the strong adhesive, and it was first sold in 1958, according to the Super Glue Corp.'s website. Cyanoacrylate, the chemical name for the glue, was first uncovered in 1942 in a search for materials to make clear plastic gun sights for World War II. But the compound stuck to everything, which is why it was rejected by researchers, the website said. President Barack Obama honored Coover in 2010 with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Coover died Saturday at his home in Kingsport, Tennessee, his grandson said. He was born in Newark, Delaware, and received a degree in chemistry from Hobart College in New York before getting a master's degree and Ph.D., from Cornell. He worked his way up to vice president of the chemical division for development for Eastman Kodak. Coover and the team of chemists he worked with became prolific patent holders, achieving more than 460. The work included polymers, organophosphate chemistry, the gasification of coal and of course, cyanoacrylate. Coover also had a part in early television history, appearing with Garry Moore for I've got a Secret. Moore, the show's host, and Coover were hung in the air on bars that were stuck to metal supports with a single drop of his glue during a live television broadcast. The Industrial Research Institute, for which he served as president in 1982, honored Coover with a gold medal and the U.S. Patent Office inducted him into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio in 2004. RE: [VFB] Alaska Report
Thanks for the report. It's great to hear about the kids. I should get some of my grandchildren tying. Three of them are older than six already. I've spent several day s with members of the Alaska Fly Fishers Association and this is a great club, big, 150 members at a meeting in Anchorage tonight and I doubt they all came over to hear my talk about fly fishing in New England. We gave out the awards for the fly tying contest I judged, 9 junior entries, and the winner was 6 and very good! In the 6-16 group we had a dozen nice entires and lot's of adults. Overall the entries were of high quality, and the choices of flies for each division were really good, not all the usual. I introduced feather wing streamers to 22 members on Saturday and on Wednesday we head north so I can do all this in Fairbanks. Inbetween this got to see the Iditarod take off, and may get to fish the Kenai is open in places. When I get back I'll update everyone on the swaps I'm meistering and get tying my own flies.
